NORTH DEANERY NEWS
Dear North Deanery School Families,
I hope this inaugural edition of the North Deanery News
adequately represents the wonderful work being done at all ten
(10) of our North Deanery schools. As the high school of the
North Deanery, it is tempting to flood our partner schools with
all of the academic and extra-curricular success of our students,
as well as the invaluable faith formation experiences they are
having here at Bishop Chatard.
Presented by Bishop Chatard:
The High School of the
North Deanery
I can promise you that we will do a little horn tooting along the way, but the North Deanery
News will also focus on the exciting and meaningful experiences that all of our students
are having. Our goal is to share with you on a regular basis the stories that make our
schools so special and, in the process, help us all learn from each other’s successes.
We plan to publish the newsletter on an every other month basis, starting in September
and running through the end of each school year, and are counting on the schools and
families to supply us with up to date articles and photos. We have great stories to share,
the stories of our Catholic schools busy about the work of forming our children to be the
persons God has called them to be. I hope you enjoy our effort to make known the gift
Catholic schools are to our community.

FUTURE PROBLEM SOLVERS
AC T I V I T I E S
CONTINUE WINNING TRADITION
For the fourth year in a row, St. Thomas Aquinas
students are competing at Future Problem Solvers
International Conference. FPSPI develops critical and
creative thinking skills as students focus on global
issues that will likely challenge mankind in the future.
The International Conference features four days of
stimulating competitive problem solving, cooperative
educational seminars, and social activities. Each year
over 2,000 students and coaches from across the globe
attend the FPS International Conference.
Saint Simon is Battling it Out!...
Students in 4th through 8th grade participated
in America’s Battle of the Books, a reading
incentive program for students. 246 students
participated, with almost 100% participation in 4th and
5th grade!
over Books!!
The program is coordinated by Paula Pletcher,
Media Specialist at Saint Simon the Apostle School.
America’s Battle of the Books is a nationwide, low cost
reading program for students in grades 3rd-12th.
After the books were announced in the fall, students
formed teams of five. Each team chose a name,
received a t-shirt and assigned the books. All teams
participated in Battle of the Books during Catholic
School’s Week. Sixth grade won the middle school
competition, enjoying the victory with “lunch out”
during the school day at a nearby restaurant!
The Bishop Chatard Trobotics Club works on designing
and constructing a series of robots for competition.
The BCHS Robotics Team stole the show at the City
of Indianapolis VEX Robotics Championship! Trobotics
Blue and Trobotics White each finished with an
impressive record, 3rd and 5th place out of 40 teams!
Trobotics Blue was also honored with the Amaze
Award for their ingenious robot design and qualified for
nationals!
The 8th graders at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic
School held their annual Engineering Challenge in
May. Teams of students constructed Rube Goldberg
type machines and displayed and demonstrated
them for family and younger students. Viewers voted
for the People’s Choice Award and all teams were
judged by Mrs. Hoy (science teacher) on how they
met the criteria for the assignment.
Trivia Night a Huge Success!
Question: What inaugural IHM event raised
$6,000 to support 50 students traveling to our
nation’s capital to soak in American history by having
over 35 teams compete for cash prizes and most
importantly, bragging rights?
Answer: The IHM Trivia Bowl

Celebrates the Arts!
Thursday, May 16th, was a celebration of the arts at
Christ the King. The evening included an art show,
choral concert and band performance. Audience
favorites filled the show, “CKS Pops!” In addition,
there was an encore performance of the CKS Middle
School band’s contest piece.
“ We always enjoy having North Deanery students
join us for the matinee because it gives us a chance
to inspire future Trojans. Our hope is that students
will feel welcomed. We also hope that it encourages
students to get involved in Theatre and the arts in
their schools.

This year IHM students and their families have
donated nearly $5000 to the many outreach
ministries that our parish supports. Each
Friday, the collection at the all school liturgy is
designated to benefit a specific ministry.
Over the course of the year, IHM has supported more
than a dozen different causes. In addition to our
Honduras outreach, they have also helped to support
Books on Wheels, Anna’s House (Lucious Newsom’s
original ministry), and the Guardian Angel Guild, a
group that provides funding to students with special
needs. In December, we made a contribution to the
Catholic charities Christmas Store.
IHM has raised money for The Children’s Wish
Foundation, the Little Sisters of the Poor’s Saint
Augustine’s Home for the Aged, and Indy Reads. In
addition to canned goods and service hours, IHM has
also made financial contributions to The Boulevard
Place Food Pantry.
IHM is truly making God
Known, Loved and Served. . . ALLWAYS.

The Royal Rally is an annual tradition at St.
Simon. The theme for this year, Memories,
Miracles, Ministry and Music carried throughout the
day. Portions of the money raised this year will benefit
Miracle Place and outfitting their new tutoring room.
Miracle Place is a neighborhood ministry on the neareast side of Indianapolis, providing numerous services
for low-income neighbors. The eighth grade class
visits Miracle Place weekly to assist with homework
and activities.
Students kicked off the day watching the debut of
the St. Simon school celebration music video! The
students, paired with their “school buddies”, made a
decade Rosary, created miracle banners, watched a
video about Miracle Place produced by the eighth grade
and walked laps praying for others. The school came
together to pray the rosary for Mr. Kerry O’Brien, St.
Simon’s Physical Education teacher who is currently
in treatment for leukemia. The day ended with an all
school celebration in the gym with live music!
St. Luke Goes

Stewardship Activities
For the Middle School Religion Program each grade
takes a theme and tries to incorporate their service
within the theme for the year.
The students have to do two service projects per quarter.

Food Link
OR Chickens!
St. Luke Catholic
School became the
latest Urban Chicken
school. Third and
fourth graders care for three chickens, and collect
and sell the eggs. The students keep track of egg
production, and food consumption to learn to manage
data. The true “cage free” chickens produce about a
dozen eggs a week, that are then sold to provide funds
for food and supplies.

The Bishop Chatard High School President’s
Award is the highest honor given to an incoming
freshman. The principals from each of our
North Deanery grade schools select two eighth grade
students who most exemplify the mission of Bishop
Chatard: a commitment to faith, learning, leadership
and service. As part of Bishop Chatard’s recognition of
these recipients, a commemorative plaque and onetime $500 tuition award is given.
