Just recently we emailed out notice about free tickets for a movie premiere that we were offered and many of you emailed back that you wanted to be added for tickets. If you would like to be included in our email distribution, please contact us with your email. September is National Senior Center Month - the theme this year is “Find Balance at Your Center”. Dancing, taking a class, listening to a lecture, planting a community garden bed, laughing with friends are all moments that allow for a daily practice of living a balanced life. We are offering a wide range of special events to celebrate, so be sure to read all of our upcoming events so you do not miss a thing Thursday, Sept 1st – Labor Day BBQ Lunch – Boneless Chicken Breast or Sausage, Salads, Dessert and Beverage. $4.00 per person. Please pay when you sign up in the office. Cut-off date is Monday, Aug 29th Friday, Sept 2nd – Bullying Seminar plus the Top 5 Scams against Seniors. 10:30 am. Monday, Sept 5th – Labor Day – Center closed for the holiday. Tuesday, Sept 6th – Stroke Awareness and Nursing Clinical – with Roxborough Memorial Hospital, The nursing clinical is all day. Tuesday, Sept 6th, Thursday, Sept 8th and Friday, Sept 9th – Stand Down Baking - 12:30pm to 3:30pm on Tuesday and Friday and 1pm to 4pm on Thursday. Thursday, Sept. 8th – Senior Expo with State Representative Tina Davis. 10am to 1pm at Lower Bucks Hospital. Thursday, Sept 8th – Nursing Clinical at the Center – All day with Roxborough Memorial Hospital. Friday, Sept 9th – Independence Blue Cross Technology Event. 9am to Noon. There will be a limited supply of IPads for training use. You are encouraged to bring your own IPad or Tablet. Please RSVP for this event by calling the center. When you call, please let us know if you will be bringing your own IPad or Tablet to the event. Additional date of Tuesday, Sept 13th for IBX additional technology event. The live auction will be from 11am to 4pm on Saturday, with auction preview and silent bidding happening on Friday. Our kitchen and bake sale will be open during both days of the auction. We also have at least 125 scarecrow kits that are ready to go for kids and families to make for only $5 each. Also on Saturday, there will be costumed characters including the Texas Roadhouse Armadillo (who will be giving our kids meal coins). Entertainment will include a DJ, Baton Twirlers and other entertainment groups. The following kids activities will include 2 moon bounces (one for smaller kids & one for older kids like a slide) Hayrides, Apple Pie eating contest, Pumpkin Painting, Face Painting, Balloon Sculpting, Pony Rides, Petting Zoo, Popcorn sales and Vendors.(Note we are looking for vendors).. New events may include a tug of war contests, Cake Walks, Candy Corn Bowling, Zombie Bowling, Pick a pop, ring toss. Rain date will be Sunday, Sept 25th. Janine Slabicki, from Bucks County Area Agency on Aging is bringing several APPRISE counselors to help answer your questions about 2017 Medicare Enrollment. Tuesday, Nov 29th – Giving Tuesday – Fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse. 4pm to 10pm Note from the Program Committee: American Sign Language – we are looking to have an information/demonstration with the possibility of having classes here at the center. If you are interested in learning sign language and want to see a information/demonstration, please call the office to sign up. Chair Yoga is a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting in a chair or standing using a chair for support. This practice physically supports increased strength, stamina, and flexibility as well as increases energy, range of motion, balance, and coordination and can be adapted to individual needs. We will also practice breathing and meditation techniques to reduce stress, tension, and anxiety and cultivate more peace in our lives. All levels and ages welcome! This class is currently being offered on Thursday mornings at 10:15am for $3.00/class. We are looking to add an evening class on Wednesday nights for the same price, time to be determined. If you are interested in this class, please contact the center. Tai Chi is practiced for its health benefits and achieving greater longevity. It is held on Thursday, afternoons at 12:30pm and last about an hour. Our current instructor, Fred Pileggi, will be leaving around the new year. The new instructor will be Clyde Beury. Please come see a demonstration of Tai Chi during the AKS Sorority Health Fair on Monday, Sept 19th. Produce Pick Up - Fresh produce come in around 1:30 PM at the center on Tuesdays. Various produce items come in and we want to make sure that it gets to you as fresh as possible. This will make our volunteers who are picking up the produce happy to know it is being distributed as fresh as possible. This also happens occasionally on Thursdays but please call the center first. When you do come to pick up produce, please bring your own CLEAN reusable bags. Volunteers needed: We are looking for a few volunteers to help us pick up produce and meat in Bensalem on Tuesday’s and occasionally in New Britain on Thursday’s. Also looking for a volunteer to pick up at Panera Bread in the Langhorne Square Shopping Center each Sunday evening at 7:45pm Volunteer Class leaders- Do you have a special talent or expertise you can share with the center? Would you be interested in leading a group or class? Many of our class leaders are volunteers who assist the center by sharing of their time. If you have an idea for a group or class you would be interesting in helping lead, please stop by the center and talk to us. Membership/Dues – Just a reminder that membership dues are now due. Please stop by the office to renew your membership and to make sure that your information is up to date. ShopRite Receipts – We are still collecting ShopRite receipts here at the center. Please place your receipts in the container by the bookkeepers office. C.A.R.E.S. Program – The Community League of St. Marry Medical Center offers durable medical equipment and supplies 100% Free to area residents. They are located in the Pine Watson Shopping Center in Langhorne. Please call them at 215-710-2027 to donate or receive gently used medical equipment. CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them. Trained volunteers complete a checklist with each driver. Among the items checked: Correct position of driver's seat Proper adjustment of mirrors Ability to see over the steering wheel correctly And more… The Goals of the program: Help older drivers improve the "fit" of their vehicles for safety & comfort Promote conversations among older adults & families about driving safety & continued need for mobility options to keep people involved in their communities Link adults with relevant, local resources that can help ensure they drive safely longer. Car Fit is NOT designed to determine someone's ability to drive or influence their ability to have a driving license. It is solely an educational program.
