$13,000 for Post Education & Mentoring Fund

Held 5 October at the luxurious Sandy Burr CC in Wayland, Ma, under perfect weather,
the 34 groups of 129 golfers enjoyed one heck of a day of fun, frivolity, networking, beveraging,
fooling around, and, of course, prize winning. As is the custom of the Bugle, we do not announce
winners other than, the not to be ashamed, SEA Consultants bagging the coveted last place
“Participation” prize consisting of the sure-fire happiness-producing “Coach” gift certificates.
It goes without saying, but we will, the XMAS morning-like prize table was littered with booze and
balls, tools and toys, gifts and gags, shirts and shovels, pictures and practice aids … however,
our collective memory is diminished by the day’s dizzying events. I’m sure you get the idea.
The event netted just under $13000 including some proceeds yet to be proceeded, so to speak.
Those firms who are a bit tardy with what they owe will be chased to the ends of this small world of
ours. And they know who they are. So with all of that said, the Post gratefully acknowledges the

The Order of the Engineer
The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the
United States to foster a spirit of pride and
responsibility in the engineering profession,
to bridge the gap between training &
experience, and to present to the public a
visible symbol identifying the engineer. The
first ceremony was held in 1970 at Cleveland
State University. Others like it have since
spread across the U.S. at which graduate &
registered engineers are invited to accept the
Obligation of the Engineer (see Aug 09
Bugle) and wear a stainless steel ring.
The Obligation is a creed similar to the oath
attributed to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) that
is taken by medical graduates and sets forth
an ethical code. The Obligation is similar to
the Canadian "Ritual of the Calling of an
Engineer" initiated in 1926, an oath authored
by Rudyard Kipling. The Order is not a
membership organization; there are not any
meetings or dues. Instead, the Order fosters a
unity of purpose and the honoring of an
engineer’s pledge.
The Post Spring Committee voted to
transfer $17,000 to the Post Education &
Mentoring Fund from our May 2009 event.
Essayons and a huge congrats to the
Committee. The Committee meets the first
Tuesday of every month from September to
April at the Corps in Concord. Please contact
Sheila Warren (see masthead) to join and help.
A Doctor was addressing a large
audience: "The material we put into our
stomachs is enough to have killed most of us
sitting here, years ago. Red meat is awful.
Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining.
Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat
diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes
the long- term harm caused by the germs in
our drinking water. But there is one thing that
is the most dangerous of all and we all have,
or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what
food causes the most grief and suffering
for years after eating it?"
After several
seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old in the front row
softly said, "Wedding Cake." (Ed. note: The

Health Myths
1. Most of your body heat is lost through
your head. That’s because the head (and face)
are usually the most exposed areas. You lose heat
from whatever is uncovered. There is nothing
special about the head.
2. You should drink at least 8 cups of water
per day. There is no medical reason to follow this
advice. Studies suggest most people already get
enough water from they usually eat and drink.
3.
You’re only using 10% of your brain.
Not true. Each region of the brain has a function.
As Casey Stengal used to say: “you can look it up.”
4. Too much coffee is bad for you. Studies
show that drinking three 8-ounce cups of coffee
before working out can significantly lessen post
workout pain.

GZA GeoEnvironmental is currently seeking
a Water Resources Engineer located in
Norwood, MA.
The engineer will work on
rainfall/runoff analyses, drainage & flood control
designs, computer modeling, hydraulic structure
design, onsite wastewater design, dam safety
engineering, water quality investigations including
lake diagnostic studies, and related environmental
permitting support. The position will involve
fieldwork activities including: drilling observations,
soil & water sampling, pump tests, and stream
flow measurements. The candidate will have a BS
or MS in civil or environmental engineering, with a
strong background in surface & groundwater
hydrology, open channel hydraulics, watershed
management
and
associated
physical/earth
sciences. Academic training or work experience
using various hydrologic & hydraulic modeling
(i.e. HECHMS, HECRAS, HydroCAD, StormCAD,
CulvertMaster, etc.) as well as AutoCAD and
ArcView is considered essential. Experience with
SWMM, HSPF, QUAL2E, MODFLOW, MIKE URBAN
is considered a plus. GZA is also seeking Staff
Level Civil/Geotechnical Engineers to support
our dam safety engineering practice. Knowledge
of engineering principles relating to design &
construction of dams is essential.
Successful
candidates must have strong qualifications in the
geo-civil profession related to the inspection,
planning, design and construction phases of earth
embankment, concrete gravity, and stone
masonry dams. Duties will include conducting
dam safety inspections including geotechnical
investigations; drilling observations; feasibility
studies and producing engineering evaluation
reports. Candidates must be able to conduct
stability & seepage foundation analyses as well as
prepare design drawings, technical specifications
and related bid documents. BS degree in Civil
Engineering w/ 4-6 years geotechnical experience
or MS in Geotechnical engineering with 2-3 yrs
experience, w/ strong communication, problem
solving and organizational skills are a must.
Working knowledge of: failure mode analysis;
numerical modeling and finite-element analysis;
seismic hazard assessments analyses & designs;
computer
aided
design/drafting;
contract
documents; cost estimating and scheduling.

Supports the winning Brady G2 Team for Navy
EMAC services - announcing its participation as
a teaming partner on a joint venture between
Richard Brady & Associates & Gutierrez Canales
Engineering,
both
small
disadvantaged
businesses. The U.S. Navy awarded the team,
led by the Brady G2 of San Diego, one of five
contracts under the Environmental Multiple
Award Contracts (EMAC) program. With a
contracting period of up to five years and a
contracting
pool
ceiling
of
$75
million,
the program scope offers Naval Facilities
Engineering Service Center (NAVFAC ESC) clients
a broad range of services focused on innovative
environmental solutions supporting remediation,
natural and cultural resources management,
and NEPA compliance. The program is designed
to
support
U.S.
Navy
&
Marine
Corps
organizations & facilities in the CONUS, Alaska,
Hawaii, and the U.S. territories. The contract is
available to support other federal agencies
requesting the assistance of the NAVFAC ESC.
Geosyntec has a long tradition of providing
innovative environmental engineering & science to
DOD agencies targeting sites w/ emerging and/or

President’s Message

As we enter the harvest and holiday season,
I wanted to thank the Post members who have
supported our monthly meetings and recent events.
The recent fall classic golf event was well attended
raising a significant amount of dollars for our
scholarship program. The young members sponsored
a great, a Mt. Manadnock hike and the October
monthly meeting, as were all meetings for this
current year was well attended. There were over 80
attendees for the Readiness Committee sponsored
meeting on energy and security presented by the
Coast Guard and an address from the Post
sponsored Schools to Careers program. The Post has
a lot to be thankful for and is blessed with an active
membership and sustaining members that are very
supportive in these trying times. In fact, at another
professional group meeting I was told by an
attendee that Boston Post is one of the most active
and benevolent groups in the area.
The Board of Directors continues their effort to work
on programs and events for the year. The Spring
Meeting Committee has conducted the first meeting
in October and will now be entering the most
demanding time of the year for planning and conduct
of the meeting members that want to get involved in
Post activities may want to help out on this
committee. The Small Business Committee continues
to plan the February meeting that has been the
cornerstone of the Post’s partnering program with
large businesses and to learn from various
government bodies about upcoming opportunities.
In addition, the Scholarship Committee has formed a
subcommittee to set policy regarding the awarding
of college scholarships.
The Post is faced with
several challenges due to the financial crisis that has
eroded
the
existing
endowments
and
this
subcommittee is working on recommendations to the
Board of Directors for the awarding of future
scholarships.
The next monthly meeting scheduled for November
10, 2009. During this meeting we will be seeing a
video message from General Van Antwerp regarding
National SAME vision for the future. I look forward
to seeing you at the upcoming meetings and exciting
fall and winter monthly program meetings.
Young Members Corner

Welcome to fall in New England fellow YMs!
The SAME National Board of Direction has approved a
substantial reduction in the cost of a Life Membership
for an Individual Member under the age of 36 or an
NCO (Non-Commissioned officer).
For Individual
Members under the age of 36, the cost will decrease
from $550 to $350.
For an NCO, the cost will
decrease from $550 to $300. The Board believes that
the commitment to a lifetime of membership in SAME
is worth the potential loss of revenue from annual
dues and is consistent with the SAME mission.
The Post Young Member Committee is thrilled to
announce the successful completion of our October
event -- a hike of Mt. Monadnock in southern New
Hampshire.
Climbing to 3,165 feet, the fourteen
participants were treated to good weather and
gorgeous views of the fall foliage. The summit
provided blue skies, a slight breeze, and incredible
scenery. On the bottom left is a picture of our group
as we stopped for lunch on our way to the summit.
Congratulations to all of you that made the hike with
us, and I encourage all of you to consider joining us
next fall for what proved to be an exceptional event!!
As we continue to truck towards the holidays,
it seems about time for another a YM Social; one of
our traditional events that hasn't been on the radar in
recent months.
This dinner and drinks social
(a.k.a., networking opportunity) will be held on
Wednesday, November 18, 2009. We will meet
upstairs in the 'Captain's Room' at Scupper Jack's on
Route 2A in Acton, MA. The event stars at 5:00 pm,
and continues until everyone heads home. As with all
of our social events, dinner and drinks will be
available at your discretion, and each participant will
be responsible for their own tab. If you are interested
in joining the YM Committee for a night of networking
and socializing, please contact me at 978-318-8072

The YM Committee is starting to plan for the New
Year's events, and would love your input. If you have
ideas or suggestions for events in 2010, please let us
know! We plan to have a full slate of activities again
next year, and you may see some recurring events
from 2009, including the College Hockey Night,
Charles River Cleanup, YM Ski Day, and the Lowell
Spinners game. We hope to see you out at our
upcoming events soon.
I hope that all of my fellow YMs are doing well and
enjoying the vibrant fall colors. Enjoy the weather
while we can, winter may be on the way!
