See page 10 for details Focus on Downtown Development Development Updates: Ring Out the Old, Ring in the New W ho knows what 2008 will bring? We can tell you a few things: the Trinity Triangle project will move forward, an old West Ponce office building will get a new life, a well-known art school will begin classes in Decatur, and we’ll say a sad goodbye to Mick’s restaurant. Trinity Triangle It appears that we are making progress with the Trinity Triangle project after months of delay. A demolition contractor has been hired and will begin interior demolition of the Relax Inn and the temporary city hall building during December. Removal of the buildings should occur the first week in January. Plans are to demolish these two buildings and what remains of My Sisters Room and fence the site. The developer is working with us to leave much of the existing parking area open for use by the Depeaux until construction begins next year. The Dairy Queen will be allowed to remain open for as long as possible. While we secured an agreement that allows the Dairy Queen to reopen in the new project, we continue to look for a temporary location for them to operate during construction. 315 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. This 1960s-era office building was sold this fall. The new owner plans to keep the existing office building and develop a residential project on the large surface parking lot to the rear of the building. A parking structure to serve both buildings would be placed at the center of the site. The Decatur Focus is a joint publication of the City of Decatur, the Decatur Downtown Development Authority and the Decatur Business Association. It is a newsletter intended to provide announcements and information related to events, activities, and businesses in the City of Decatur. The purpose of the newsletter is to promote the city and encourage the exchange of information among residents, business owners and the school system. Letters to the editor, editorials or other opinion pieces are not published. All press releases, announcements and other information received for publication are subject to editing. Information found in the Focus is also posted on Decatur’s official website at www.decaturga.com. The deadline for submitting articles, announcements or advertising is the first day of the month preceding publication. Contact: Editor, Decatur Focus, P.O. Box 220, Decatur, GA 30031, 404-371-8386; fax 404-371-1593; email: linda.harris@decaturga.com. We are coordinating meetings between the developer and residents who live near the site and hope to have approved plans early next year. The Art Institute of Atlanta The Art Institute of Atlanta recently opened a campus in downtown Decatur in the One West Court Square building. Plans are to start small and add classes over the next year. A student art gallery will be in the commercial space fronting W. Ponce de Leon Avenue behind Quiznos, bringing much-needed life to this block of W. Ponce de Leon. We welcome this new organization into downtown Decatur and look forward to meeting the students. Mick’s Closing Mick’s was the restaurant that paved the way for Decatur’s rebirth as a destination dining center. Financial problems apparently caused the restaurant to close abruptly in November along with several other restaurants in metro Atlanta that carried the Mick’s name. Interest in the Decatur site is very high. We are working with the property owner to make certain we get the perfect restaurant for that space. To help ensure the success of the plan, the City is seeking public participation. Public Meeting Schedule Tuesday, Dec. 11, 7 p.m. Review of Concept Plan Options Tuesday, Jan. 8, 7 p.m. Preliminary Plan and Cost Review Both meetings at the Decatur First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, behind the sanctuary at 308 Clairemont Ave. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 7 p.m. Draft Master Plan/Phasing/Costs This meeting will be held at Decatur City Hall, City Commission Room, 509 N. McDonough St. Visit www.decaturga.com for information about the Glenlake master planning process and to fill out a Community Interest Form so your comments may be heard. City to Conduct Meetings for Transportation Plan The Decatur City Commission is conducting information and comment sessions on the final draft of the Community Transportation Plan. The meetings will be held on Dec. 5 and 12, 4-6 p.m. in the City Commission Meeting Room, City Hall, 509 North McDonough Street. A copy of the plan is posted on the City’s web site at: http://www.decaturga. com/cgs_citysvcs_dev_transportationplan. aspx Comments may also be submitted to: Community Transportation Plan c/o Amanda Thompson Decatur City Hall 509 N. McDonough St. Decatur, GA 30030 fax 404-370-0691 amanda.thompson@decaturga.com Neighborhood Sidewalk Improvement Program The City of Decatur is accepting petitions from neighborhoods for sidewalk improvements. As part of the Decatur Bond Referendum that was approved in September 2006, $1.5 million was earmarked for sidewalk improvements, including construction of new sidewalks where none currently exist as well as repair of existing sidewalks. About $250,000 of this budget was spent in 2007 for sidewalk improvements on Coventry Road, East Lake Drive, Forkner Drive, Madison Avenue, S. Columbia Drive, Underwood Street, W. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Wilton Drive and Winnona Drive. Major goals of the city’s 2000 Strategic Plan and 2007 Community Transportation Plan are to provide safe, well-maintained sidewalks on at least one side of every street in Decatur. A discussion of the city’s pedestrian goals and a map of the sidewalk system are available online in the Community Transportation Plan at www.decaturga.com/transportationplan. The city-wide sidewalk improvement program began in 2004 with funding from annual appropriations by the City Commission. About three-and-a-half miles of new and replacement sidewalks have been built to date. Generally, priorities have been to: • Provide safe walking routes to the city’s schools. • Close gaps in the existing sidewalk system. • Provide sidewalks where there is a substantial amount of existing pedestrian traffic and in areas with high volumes of vehicular traffic. • Respond to citizen requests. • Repair existing sidewalks in poor condition. To supplement these traditional priorities, the City Commission has approved a petition process for the next round of sidewalk improvements. A sample petition is available on the News Flash page at www.decaturga.com/newsflash.aspx. Residents and neighborhood associations are encouraged to survey their communities to determine support for sidewalk improvements. There is no required minimum level of support. However, wide support from residents for installation of new sidewalks along a street where no sidewalk exists is desirable. As part of the criteria listed above, petitions will be considered in the overall development of a proposed scope of work but should not be regarded as the controlling factor. Ultimately, the City Commission will approve sidewalk improvements, considering what is in the best interests of Decatur’s public safety, health and welfare. No petition is required to request repairs to existing sidewalks. Repairs may be requested by emailing sidewalks@decaturga.com or by faxing a request to the Engineering Department at 404-378-5054. The next phase of sidewalk improvements is planned for 2008. In order to be considered for this phase, please return your petition to the City Manager’s Office by March 31, 2008. Court Square in Decatur. Applications are now being accepted for classes that will begin Jan. 8. “We’re very proud to be opening at this location and to be a part of a community like Decatur, which so obviously cares about and promotes the arts,” said President Janet S. Day. “We chose Decatur for a number of reasons, including the inquiries we receive from people who find the Sandy Springs location too far away for them. “It also gives us the chance to reach out to potential students in Janet Day of the Art Institute of Atlanta with Decatur Mayor Newton and Rockdale counties, as Bill Floyd and City Manager Peggy Merriss well as part of Gwinnett. And with the wonderful support of the arts by the Decatur community and the warm welcome, we knew we would be very much at home!” Degree Programs Initially, AIA-Decatur will offer bachelor’s degree programs in advertising, fashion and retail management, graphic design, interior design, media arts and animation, and Web design and interactive media. Associate degree programs will be offered in graphic design, and Web design and interactive media. Diplomas will be awarded in advertising design, digital design, residential interiors, and Web design. All required classes for these programs, including general education, will be available at the Decatur campus. Students whose programs are offered only at the Atlanta campus, 6600 Peachtree Dunwoody Rd., Sandy Springs, can attend general education and other required or elective classes offered at the Decatur campus if it is more convenient. Students enrolled at the Decatur location may take elective classes at the Atlanta campus if they wish. And students at both locations can enroll in online classes. Volunteers will work on 19 senior citizens’ homes in Decatur, making repairs and doing yard work that the elderly homeowners have been unable to afford. They will work all day Saturday and Monday, with a half-day of work on Sunday afternoon. The traditional celebration dinner will take place on Monday evening. Jobs are available at every skill level. Skilled trades people, especially roofers, plumbers, electricians and carpenters, are essential to helping these Decatur seniors live safely, comfortably, and affordably in their homes. Gardeners can lead simple gardening projects. Other volunteers can assist the logistics team with transporting tools and materials. The food committee is soliciting donations of sandwiches and homemade desserts to feed the hungry volunteers. Whether you are a skilled tradesperson, own a food service business, or just care about the seniors in our community, please consider volunteering or donating to this worthy project. December 2007 • Decatur Focus | 11 DBA NEWS State-Of-The-Art Animal Care Facility Coming to Downtown Decatur New Building Includes After-Hours Emergency Animal Care The Village Vets, a veterinary practice in downtown Decatur recently named one of metro Atlanta’s “Best Vets” by Atlanta Magazine, has broken ground on a new state-of-the-art animal care facility. The practice will relocate to the new facility next summer The 11,500-square-foot facility at 217 N. McDonough Street (across from Decatur High School), will feature the latest in medical and digital technology, expanded boarding facilities, and will be nearly three times the size of the current practice. Dr. Will Draper, founder and medical director of The Village Vets, notes that “this building will not only establish itself as home to one of the most innovative, state-of-the-art veterinary medical practices around, but will also complement the beautiful, historic downtown Decatur landscape. We are excited to offer such a unique facility to our present and future clients and their pets.” In addition, the Animal Emergency Clinic of Decatur (AECD), will also be opening in the new facility. AECD will provide emergency animal care on nights, weekends, and during all major holidays. Due to the immediate need for this type of service in the local area, AECD has recently begun operating on an interim basis in The Village Vets of Decatur’s existing location at 308 E. Howard Avenue in the downtown area. The new facility was designed by national award-winning local Decatur architectural firm Lightroom and is being developed by Oakhurst Capital Partners, also of Decatur. Ordner Construction, of Duluth, is serving as general contractor for the project. Visit www.thevillagevets.com or www.decaturanimalER.com for more information. Instead of presents, Spencer had a toy drive for children with brain tumors and asked that kids bring a new unwrapped gift (book or toy) to his birthday party to be donated to the cause. Thanks to his mom, Iko Spencer, who helped Spencer with all the details and to Clairemont Principal Jan Goodloe, who suggested he expand the birthday party to a toy drive at school. Spencer collected more than 100 gifts from his school and birthday party and they were donated to the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. Spencer is pictured surrounded by the donated gifts. SCHOOL NEWS RMS Raises Funds for Honduras Outreach Renfroe Middle School’s service club, S.O.S. (Serving Our Society), recently challenged the school’s homeroom classes to raise money for Honduras Outreach and successfully raised more than $600. They donated the proceeds from the school-wide fundraiser to Honduras Outreach to buy books in Spanish for the school library at Aldersgate Elementary in Honduras. The organization was so impressed with the students’ efforts that they came to Renfroe to meet them. Honduras Outreach is a nonprofit organization cofounded by Carl G. Renfroe.
