MS LAW Changes
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed a bill that allows
residents to carry a concealed gun in a purse, briefcase or
other fully enclosed satchel without a state-issued license.
-The bill took effect July 1.
Get yours for FREE!!!
-The bill reduces fees for people to receive and renew a
concealed-carry license.
-The fee for a new license would drop to $80 from $100, and
the renewal fee for people younger than 65 would drop to $40 from $50.
-For people older than 65, the renewal fee drops to $20.
-Disabled veterans, people on active-duty military service and current or honorably retired
law enforcement officers no longer need a license to carry a concealed weapon.
-Mississippians are allowed to legally own commonly used rifle ammunition for hunting,
target shooting and self-defense regardless of any potential ban implemented by the ATF.

Up Coming Events:
Bowen Pocket Holster review
In last month’s newsletter, GTDT reviewed the Glock G43. Turns out
that this fine little pistol makes a good back up pistol for pocket or
ankle. In this month’s edition, we will be sharing with you an option for
pocket carry. For many years I’ve carried a back-up pistol in my front
pocket. In all those years, I’ve used a few different holsters. All fell short
in either design or availability. Leather was good, but the maker went
out of business. Fist brand holsters are great, but pricey. Cook’s simply
could not make more than the prototype we jointly developed. All of the
holsters mentioned I just to carry a Kahr PM9. With the Glock G43, I
decided to try a new maker, Jeff Bowen. The holster is made of 0.060”
premium kydex. This is a good thickness as it offers sturdy construction
without being too thick. There are several colors available including a
carbon fiber. My sample is black. It is also available in both right and
left handed versions. The fit to the G43 is very good: The pistol locks
into place, is held securely, but is readily removable. The holster
features a thumb ledge to assist in removing the gun from the holster,
even one handed. By pushing on the ledge, the pistol becomes free of
the holster even if the holster doesn’t free itself when drawn from the
pocket. The ledge is wide enough to work yet as little bulk. This pocket
holster covers both side of this slide. Normally this is an unwanted
feature, but in a pocket holster, this helps keep pocket lint and debris
off the gun. After a month off daily carrying, I can say that the G43 in
this holster has remained very clean. Also, the magazine latch/release
is fully protected. Again, on a belt holster, this feature is not wanted.
However on a pocket holster, a guarded magazine latch is a very much
a necessity. Without such protection, the magazine release can be
activated and the magazine can dislodge from the locking in its place.
Once dislodged, the magazine will not feed additional rounds into the
chamber. The Bowen pocket holster also feature a pronounced “hook”
that both keeps the pistol upright while in the pocket and aids in
presenting the pistol from the pocket. By hooking the holster on the
pocket as the weapon is presented, the holster stays in the pocket
while the pistol is drawn from it. The Bowen pocket holster is made not
only for a G43, but the Kahr PM9, SW Shield & Bodyguard, SCCY, Sig
P938, XD Mod 2, G42, G26/27, Kahr CW380. Mr Bowen sells through
EBay and his seller name is jbowe12. I have found him quite easy to
deal with.

Ammo for the 380
Too often in class, a student tells me that he/she just HAS to use a .380. They almost always say something
like, “A 9mm is just too big,” or “I need something I can conceal.” Sometimes I argue, but mostly I just say,
“It’s your life.” While I still do not currently recommend the .380, there are some loads that are better than
others. After much research and ballistic testing, I offer these, “recommendations,” to those that dare use a .
380 to defend their lives.
No way, no how
Corbon: Inconsistent/poor expansion
Buffalo Bore: No expansion and over penetration
Winchester PDX 1: Nice expansion, significant under penetration
Winchester Silver Tips: Little to no expansion
Speer Gold Dot: Lack of penetration
Barnes: Lack of expansion
Lehigh- Poor/no expansion
If you HAVE to carry a 380
Remington Golden Saber: Good expansion, OK penetration
Federal HST- Excellent expansion, slight under penetration
Hornady Critical Defense- OK expansion, good penetration
Hornady American Gunner- OK expansion, good penetration
Fiocchi Extrema- OK expansion, good penetration
Interestingly enough, three loads that penetrate to 12” and expand well use the 90 grain Hornady XTP bullet
at about 1000 feet per second. It seems in order to get that penetration, some expansion has be sacrificed.
The Federal HST expands quite well, but falls JUST short (11”)of the FBI standard of 12” in bare gelatin.
THAT SEEMS TO BE THE RUB. In order to get a bullet to penetrate a full 12”+, it needs to either not expand
or to barely expand. If a bullet expands well, it will fall shy of reaching 12”. Therefore, I am NOT
recommending that you run out to sell your 9mm, buy a 380 and few boxes of XTPs or HSTs, but if you HAVE
to carry such a gun, at least carry the best ammo available for it: XTP, Golden Saber or HST.
