Welcome Aboard,

The Little Compton Community Center
extends a warm welcome to Gina
Malloy as its new Executive Director!

Board’s Transition Team – following an
extensive review of 35 very qualified
applicants – and she is already working

Gina is an attorney, a graduate of Boston University School of Law and
was formerly the executive director of the Washington D.C. Council of
Lawyers – a voluntary bar association that promotes the practice of pro
bono and public interest law.
“That beautiful season the Summer!
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light;
and the landscape lay as if new created in all the freshness of
childhood.”
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
No strangers to Sakonnet, Gina and her husband, Liam Malloy, were
married in Little Compton and have spent their summers and holidays
here for the past 15 years. Liam is joining the economics faculty at U.R.I
this fall and the Malloy family, including two young daughters, is preparing to become year-round Little Compton residents.
The long, harsh winter relented only to become the floods of
spring. At long last, summer is upon us and all of Sakonnet is
rejoicing at the welcome sight of its orchards in full bloom,
wildflowers blossoming in the meadows, the music of the
spring peepers in the marshes and the delightful sounds of
the robins and songbirds returning to our trees and fields.
As we welcome Gina to our Little Compton community, we also bid a
fond farewell to our Interim Executive Director, Stewart Lanier. Stewart
has spent the past eight months helping the Community Center with
organizational development, policies and procedures and improving
day to day operations. The Community Center has benefited immensely
from his guidance and we thank Stewart for his valuable contributions.
This Late Spring/Summer 2010 edition of Community
Connections highlights the many special events, parades,
children’s theatre, community fundraisers, church fairs, art
shows, golf tournaments and fascinating exhibitions … everything that makes summer a special time in Sakonnet. Enjoy!

When John Carter was apprised of this situation, he and Letitia responded by suggesting a
special appeal and generously offered to match the first $25,000 in contributions dollar-fordollar from the Carter Family Fund. And so, The Carter Family Challenge was initiated! Every
dollar contributed to the Community Center – up to $25,000 – will be matched by the Carter
Family Fund during this special appeal … a great way to make your gift go twice as far as
usual! We have already received some responses and have high hopes that the ultimate success of this campaign will be measured in terms of continued excellence.
We thank John and Letitia Carter for their continued generosity and faith in the mission of
the Little Compton Community Center. The Carters and the late Peter Farago were also the
bulwarks of the Farago Endowment Fund and we owe them a large debt of gratitude.

school year for students ages 5-12.

school calendar).

Program is sponsored in part by
Randal S Poirier, ChFC, Financial

2010 Little Compton Golf Outing
Spring in Little Compton is also the time for dusting off your
clubs after a long, snowy winter and hitting the links. A great
way to regain your expert golfing form (and help your community as a bonus) is to join us on June 5th for the 2010 Little
Compton Golf Outing at the Sakonnet Golf Club – to benefit
the Little Compton Community Center.
Gather a foursome of friends and join the fun on Saturday,
June 5th (rain date, June 6th). A leisurely 11:30 AM registration
allows ample time to relax over lunch, ponder the day’s elements and strategize your round from the playhouse overlooking the third green and fourth tee. The outing concludes
with a 6 PM reception, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and raffle.
A limited number of foursomes and sponsorships remain. The registration form is on the web
at: www.lccenter.com – or call 401-635-2400 for more information. See you on the links!

It’s a little known fact that many of the Little Compton Community Center’s important
programs are not self-sustaining and must be partially supported by fund-raising drives, our
annual appeal and memberships. Many residents are also unaware that the Town does not
have a recreation budget nor does it fund any of the Community Center’s programs or
operations. The interest from the Center’s wonderful Farago Endowment Fund helps pay our
operating expenses but these costs continue to rise faster than the rate of return from the
Fund’s conservative investments.

Community Sponsored Programming
The Little Compton Community Center provides a wide array of
programs, services and special events that brings together people
of every age from all areas of the community, fostering a strong and
vibrant Little Compton. The Community Center has made a commitment to support these events even though many do not generate enough income to be self–sustaining. In an effort to expand
and help these programs thrive, the Center is embarking on a plan
aptly titled “Community Sponsored Programming”.
Local businesses and/or individuals can now designate a donation to
subsidize specific programs or special events. Every dedicated donation will be acknowledged here at the Center, in this quarterly newsletter and on the LCCC website. The goal is to enlist donors who will
help underwrite each and every Community Center program.
Little Compton Community Center Newsletter, May through July 2010
Pizza Party 6:30 - 7 PM
Please support the Center by donating to one of the programs listed
below:
Circle of Friends sponsors monthly social opportunities to members of this community with special needs. Events include concerts,
dances, talent shows, holiday parties, and other seasonal field trips.
Churches and several families have helped with the food and logistics for these wonderful programs yet with a $7500 annual budget
we need your directed donation to help this program thrive.
Youth Activities Community This program sponsors dozens of
dances, field trips and events each year that cater to 7th thru 9th graders. This much-needed program offers teenagers an opportunity to
become involved and caring members of the community through
their actions. The annual budget for this group is just over $16,000 and
your donation will serve as a foundation which they can build upon.
Senior Meal Site offers healthy meals and a thrice-weekly opportunity for our seniors to gather, socialize, take advantage of elderly
services and share a hot meal in the company of friends through-
out the year. The three-dollar optional donation doesn’t come close
to covering expenses. Although partially funded by the R.I. Dept of
Elderly Affairs, we need your financial encouragement to fully fund
this essential gathering.
Family Movie Night Every month, we transform our second floor
into a Movie Theatre and roll out a big screen family-friendly movie,
complete with a pizza party and child care services. This community event is very popular with our younger families and summer visitors as an affordable family night out. Each movie night costs
approximately $250 but the admission fees often fall short of that
mark. Be our champion to this cause.
LCCC Theatre and Children’s Theatre Live Theater thrives here in
Little Compton as residents of all ages take center stage, including
an energetic group of our youngest shining stars. Actors, stagehands,
set and costume designers, technical crew and a talented director all
combine efforts to bring Performing Arts to our stage. Past performances have included Bye Bye Birdie, The Sound of Music, The Music
Man … and coming this May, Tom Sawyer, the Musical. Endorse and
enrich us with your sponsorship. The show must go on!
This Community Sponsored Programming initiative will help preserve our current programs and provide a sound base to improve
and expand these initiatives. Your directed donations and each sustaining contribution will be highlighted on our fundraising symbol,
the Little Compton Gift Map. Segments of the map will represent
each individual program and each contribution will be recorded to
colorfully recognize that support. Keep in mind that the first
$25,000 in donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Carter
Family Fund Challenge (see page 2).
If you are interested in making a dedicated donation to underwrite
one or more of these programs, please contact the Center at 401635-2400. Thank you for your support!
‘A picture is a poem without words’ – the 12th Annual Little Compton
Summer Art Show
All art must be framed, priced and available for sale. All interested
artists should contact the Community Center for more information
and a registration form.
There will be a special Patron’s Preview Party ($100 donation) on
Friday, July 16th with early viewing at 5 PM; followed by an Artist’s
Reception and preferred admission ($10) from 6 to 8 PM. Awards
will be presented at 7 PM.
Awards include:“Best in Show” ($200), four “Awards of Excellence”
($100 each) and three Honorable Mentions. These awards are
named in honor of Little Compton artists David Aldrich, Molly Luce
Burroughs, Mary Elizabeth Post and Betty Burroughs Woodhouse.
New this year will be a “People’s Choice Award” - all attendees will
cast their vote for what they consider to be the best piece of art
work in the show.
The show is juried, open to any artist who wishes to enter. Judges this
year will be Harley Bartlett, Sally Whitin and Marian Brunn Smith.
The entry fee is $15 per entry, with a limit of two entries per artist.
Oil, watercolor, drawing, sculpture, acrylic, pastel, mixed media
and hand-pulled prints are eligible for entry. Off-set, computer generated prints are not eligible.
