It is not an imitation of Bon Odori
in Japan. If it were, Jodoshinshu
temples in America would not
have Bon Odori since Jodoshinshu
temples in Japan did not
traditionally have Bon Odori. The
idea of the souls of our ancestors
returning at Obon time is not an
acceptable idea in Jodoshinshu,
much less the idea of tamashii or
soul. It is ironic_that the JapaneseAmerican tradition of Bon Odori
was created by Buddhists wl;10
traditionally did not practice it.
The other schools of Japanese
Buddhism observed Bon Odori
in Japan, but did not observe
it here in America until recent
times. Jodoshinshu Buddhists in
America, including the clergy, had
to seek a meaning for Bon Odori
more in keeping with Jodoshinshu
religious experience. Although
this meaning is an ongoing work
in progress, it is the first instance
of a uniquely Japanese-American
cultural tradition. Much of this
new
interpretation
centers
around the meaning of the story
of the monk Mogallana in the
Ulambana Sutra
of hungry ghosts, while in deep
meditation. Shocked to see his
mother in this state, he asks the
Buddha how he can help her.

an offering to the Sangha at the

IMPERMANENCE AND TRANSITION
We have heard Reverend Mas
speak to us many times about
impermanence. To paraphrase
the Threefold Refuge, "Now we
are living it." Reverend Kodani is
retiring. Soon. The temple's New
Minister Selection Committee has
succeeded in securing a new minister for Sen shin. His name is Reverend Ryuta Furumoto, currently
of San Mateo Buddhist Temple.
We've been fortunate to have the
benefit of Rev. Mas' Dharma talks
and point of view for more than
four decades. But his long tenure
here at Senshin brings with it its
own burden. Our ability to anticipate and accept whatever happens at Senshin has been fostered
by the consistency of our leadership. Our familiarity and comfort
at Senshin is about to be disrupted big time. No\'\-j it will be up to
us to adapt as Rev. Furumoto's
vision for Senshin and its sangha
begins to take shape. We will have
the opportunity to get the feel for
his view of life, of the Dharma and
to experience how he delivers it.
And, I'm guessing that it's with
mixed emotions that we wish Rev.
Mas a great retirement. It is difficult to look at it without thinking
about how his retirement will affect each of us. Selfishly, it's hard
to let go. Yet, after 43 years, how
much more can we ask of him? I
think, nothing more. He has given
us everything he has, with more
patience than any parent and with
more caring than we have a right
to expect. Rev. Mas has given his
'blessing' to the selection of Rev.
Furumoto, saying that we have
gotten the best fit for Senshin.
Rev. Furumoto is 38 years old,
with his wife, Yoriyo, and three
children, daughter Matz (8) and
two sons, Gen (5) and Goh (3).
He and his young family are full
of energy and well suited to lead
Senshin into the future. Rev. Furumoto spent eight years at the
Arizona Buddhist Temple and has
served at San Mateo since 2009
plus acting as Supervising Minister at Enmanji Buddhist Temple
in Sebastopol since 2012. He also
spent one year at the Hilo Betsuin.

expressed great respect for Rev.
Mas and his legacy, so we expect
the changes will come gradually
as Rev. Furumoto tweaks things
to his liking. Rev. Mas has also
expressed that he would like the
transition period to be short, so
that we all can get on with the
business of adapting and learning to work with Rev. Furumoto.
Rev. Mas feels that the more he is
around, the more difficult will be
the transition.
It's important that we welcome
Rev. Furumoto and his family into
the Senshin sangha. As part of the
process of acquiring a new minister, the committee pledged to
both the Bishop and to Rev. Furumoto that we would take care of
him and his family and make them
part of ours. To kick start the process, we are planning a "Welcome
to Senshin" event for Rev. Furumoto and his family, most likely in
late August. Stay tuned for information on this party along with
a "Rev. Mas Appreciation" event
later in the year.
The transition from Rev. Mas to
Rev. Furumoto will take place in
September. Rev. Furumoto is moving his family to Southern California in August so that his children
can get registered for school. Rev.
Mas and Rev. Furumoto will work
on the transition for a short time,
making sure that Rev. Furumoto
knows where things are and how
they've been done. But make no
mistake, Rev. Furumoto is free to
change things as he sees fit, so
the transition brings no assurance of business as usual. On the
Senshin is very fortunate to have
secured such an outstanding minister. Many temples in the BCA are
without ministers. Bishop Kodo
Umezu has been instrumental in
helping us to secure our new minister and we owe him a debt of
gratitude.
Impermanence is one of the most
difficult concepts to come to grips
with. We nod our heads and say
we understand it. But don't we all
have routines where we attempt
to create predictability? Don't we
all have attachments to things and

then mourn their loss when we
leave them somewhere or break
them? Intellectually, we can understand the idea of impermanence. But when faced with the
more significant examples like
Rev. Mas retiring after 40+ years
or the loss of a loved one, we are
challenged to accept its truth.

delays in securing the services
of a fence contractor., and we still
are trying t0 determine which
company is best suited to replace
the Hondo A/C and heating units.
Although we had hoped to be
able to complete the fence work
and the A/C and heating units
work before the end of summer,
we may wait until after our new
minister, Rev. Ryuta Furumoto
ts settled in and Rev. Mas is fully
retired un October 31st of this
year.

In Jodoshinshu, Obon is called Kangi-e, or The Gathering ofjoy. It is the major festival of our Buddhist
calendar year. It is a memorial service and celebration in memory of our ancestors and all who have
died. It is an occasion to remember our indebtedness to all who have gone before us, to appreciate and
thank those lives and to reaffirm the sanctity of all living beings. In order to have this appreciation,
we are called to the Obon gathering to dance, however embarrassed or however boastfully- so that in
the meditation of dancing, we can momentarily forget the self. It is at this moment, that we suddenly
remember our indebtedness to others and truly dance joyfully- happiness is the ego getting it's way; joy
is being free of ego. Senshin has always begun the Obon dances with the Awa Odori, the Dance of Fools.
Within the song is the famous line: Odoru aho ni miru aho. Onaji aho nara odoranya son son - A dancing
fool and a watching foo~ since they are both fools, what a waste not to dance. To truly dance Bon Odori is to
be truly connected. It must be done without a calculating mind, without a mind needing to always be in
control. It is "just dancing" in its purest form -without guile, without pretense, without embarrassment,
without ego asserting itself in any direction. We invite you to connect with each other and all things
living and dead in this Gathering of Joy. After the dancing, you are invited to Oshoko in the Hondo and
light one or several of the 1000 oil lamps in the courtyard made by Senshin member Mr. Leo Sugano. You
are invited to light an oil lamp in memory of a loved one, one you are indebted to, friend and enemy alike.
Following the lighting of the memorial lamps will be an otoki of cold noodles and a Horaku presentation
by the Kinnara Taiko, and others.

Dear Members,
Greetings! This is our annual request to our members to remit their membership dues for the
year 2013. The dues, together with fundraising events and donations, generate the income-to operate
Senshin so that our members can. enjoy the many temple activities and services. The dues allow us to
provide the privilege of having a full time minister.
Seniors (80 years this year or over) are exempt from paying Senshin membership dues. However,
seniors wishfngto receive the Wheel a/Dharma newsletter must pay the $99 RCA membership. For couples
with one senior member, the spouse is asked to pay the "Individual Adult Membership!'.
If you have already remitted your membership dues for 2013, please accept our thanks.
