Pre-Activity Interest:
• Students should interact with the book app Smarty
Britches: Nouns.
Smarty Activity:
• Select small groups of 3-4.
• Allow each group to select one scene/page from the
app.
• Allow each group to assign the roles: characters and
narrator.
• Remind students that they can change the story and
add details.
• Have students write the script of this one scene/page:
1. Dialogue for background
information/commentary by narrator
2. Dialogue of each character
3. Dialogue for one to three choral parts where
they all speak the same words at the same
time.

• Have students revise their script. How can it be
better?
• Have students practice their script; it is not
memorized. They each have a copy of the script to
read. The emphasis is on reading fluency and
dramatization with their voices.
• Have students practice with an audio recorder, so they
can listen to their parts and practice to perform
better.
• Have students perform their plays.

Assessment:
• This unit consists of a Smarty Theater Presentation
Rubric. Review it with students before they begin
working on their scripts so that they will understand
how they are going to be scored.
