2014 annual report - Wyoming Youth Services
2014 ANNUAL REPORT
CELEBRATING OVER 30 YEARS OF CARING FOR CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY
OUR MISSION:
Wyoming Youth Services is organized as a non-profit social service agency, and represents a unique
partnership between the City of Wyoming, Wyoming Board of Education, Hamilton County Mental
Health and Recovery Services Board, Junior Woman’s Club of Wyoming, Wyoming PSA, and dedicated
members of our community. Wyoming Youth Services organizes, collaborates, facilitates, and leads
this partnership to strengthen the community, its youth and their families.
Our mission is to strengthen our community through prevention, support, and volunteerism.
A MESSAGE TO OUR SUPPORTERS
2014 was very successful AND very challenging for Wyoming Youth Services. On the success side,
we worked with and improved the lives of a record number of Wyoming children. Our High School
service club is now the largest club at the high school, and the number of students volunteering in
the Greater Cincinnati Area, through partnerships forged by WYS, hit record levels—as did the
number of hours they contributed (40,590 hours!!). Our organization’s counseling, After School
Program, and other unique programs and services had real and positive effect. We were gratified
at the community support for our fundraising events—the Pancake Breakfast, Pooch Parade, Run
for the Kids, the Haunted Trail, and Golf Outing—as well as for our Annual Appeal. We successfully
altered our staffing to increase efficiencies, focusing our Executive Director exclusively on
programming and Services, and reducing ongoing expenses by 5%.
Although 2014 was a resounding success for Wyoming Youth Services in so many ways, we
continue to face growing economic challenges, including the State government’s decision to reduce
funding and grants available to local organizations. As a result, our Board has been challenged with
how to maintain our quality services that stakeholders and citizens value so highly based on
feedback from recent surveys.
We appreciate the support of the Schools and City, as well as businesses and individuals
throughout Wyoming for our efforts to continue to offer quality programs and services. Together,
we will continue our mission of making our community stronger by helping families and children
through prevention, support and volunteerism.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (ASP)
Wyoming Youth Services was founded in 1981, after community members
expressed concerns about local youth “hanging around” during
unsupervised after school hours and, oftentimes, engaging in high-risk
behaviors. Our program offers structure to best meet the educational and
social needs of the students. We provide students with skills tutoring to
foster math and reading skills, bridge gaps between parents and teachers
to address specific academic needs of students, and set benchmarks to
evaluate our own success. Feedback from students, parents, and
teachers has testified to the strength of this program. In today’s society,
where many children are left unsupervised after school and many parents
are working second jobs just to make ends meet, the opportunity to have
a home away from home where students can receive support and
encouragement, professional instruction, and benefit from positive adult
and peer role models has a positive impact on all students in our
community. For the 2013-2014AY, students who participated in the ASP
had an average of 7.0 days of missed school, had average Reading grades
of 2.79 (B-) and average Math grades of 2.93 (B-).

COUNSELING
Our counseling program began informally in 1981, providing a place for local
youth to drop by for support and guidance. Our program has evolved into a comprehensive system
of support, providing counseling services to all community residents at no charge. Our counseling
services are designed to promote family support and encourage positive family communication, to
build self-esteem, to teach children conflict resolution and resistance skills, and to help nurture a
sense of purpose for every child in our community. Counseling services are provided by a Licensed
Social Worker (LSW) who works under the supervision of an independently licensed Social Worker
(LISW-S). Counseling is provided both in our offices and at school, and addresses a variety of issues
including: divorce and separation, social or school anxiety, poor school performance, and
depression - all of which can adversely impact a child’s ability to function at home, in the classroom,
or in the community. Our counseling program assists the schools by providing more intensive
services than can be managed by school counseling staff alone.

We are very proud of the additional services that we have been able to
offer to the community over the past three decades, including a
significantly expanded counseling program and additions to our After
School Program. Wyoming Youth Services has a long-standing tradition
of being watchful stewards of all funding received.
We cannot continue to offer these essential and expanded services without support from
you, our funders.
At this time, we are calling on the Wyoming Community to help support Wyoming Youth
Services with all of our fundraising efforts. Through your support, we can continue to
provide services to strengthen our children, our families, and our community.
