An internationally renowned Harvard
professor and the President of the
national milk marketing entity, DMI,
delivered stirring speeches to the 15
students graduating from Hinsdale
Adventist Academy (pictured above).
Dr. David Williams presented his
sermon to an overflowing church on
Sabbath June 1 at the Hinsdale SDA
church. His words in support of a
Seventh-day Adventist education were
certainly challenging. Using his
successful career as a Professor at
Harvard and Yale, he emphatically
stated that a Christian background is
not a barrier to success, despite the
common perception. Dr. William’s own
educational experience included a
foundation in Adventist education with
degrees earned from both Andrew’s
University in Michigan and Loma Linda
in California. Dr. Williams is currently
the Florence Sprague Norman and
Laura Smart Norman Professor of
Public Health at the Harvard School of
Public Health and Professor of African
and African American Studies and of
Sociology at Harvard University.
On Adventist Education he said to
parents,
“Remember that God is interested
in the motives that guide your
actions. If you are choosing public
schools, why are you doing it?
When Jesus asks you for his flock,
won’t you want to say that you
have given your best? The challenge in the life of a Christian is
never money. The challenge in the
life of a Christian is to discover
what God wants you to do!”

Thomas Gallagher, president of DMI
and the GenYouth foundation,
reminded the graduates that weakness
of attitude becomes weakness of character. Tom, also the father of
graduating senior John, told the
congregation to
“Be all that you can possibly
be with what God gave you,
not so you can be more
successful than others or more
recognized than others or
have more things than
others…do it because it is your
responsibility to God who gave
you these talents”.
As someone who has achieved
significant success at the highest levels
of corporate America he also advised
listeners to “pay attention to the words
that you use. Use positive words and
surround yourselves with positive
people. Be encouraging and be the best
you can be.”
Tom Gallagher will continue to give his
time to HAA next year, even though his
son has already graduated. He believes
HAA to be a hidden gem in this community. Profiles on all of the new board
members are also included in this
newsletter. With God’s blessing and
guidance, HAA is poised for its strongest year yet.
WELCOME NEW HAA TEACHERS!
We are very excited to introduce the following talented individuals joining our team this year!
Giovanna Wells, 6th Grade
I believe each and every child has the potential to bring something unique and special to the world. As an
energetic and optimistic person, I am enthusiastic and passionate as I work with children. I strive to do
my best to ensure that every student in my care will receive the most out of their education. I want my
students to grow academically, socially, and most of all spiritually. I want to focus on teaching my students
to be involved and responsible citizens of society and have a loving respect for God as their Friend, Father
and Savior.
Hannah DeLuca, 5th Grade
I believe that every student has potential, and expect progress from each individual. I love getting to know
students, and developing positive relationships with each one. No matter what their learning style, I've
found that everybody learns best from doing so I incorporate many hands-on activities that engage
students in a lesson. Most of all I believe the best teaching comes from being connected with Christ, following His example, and showing his love to others.
RuthAnne Altsman, 8th Grade
I am ready to be begin my 21st year of teaching and am very excited to join the Hinsdale Adventist
Academy team! My daughter and I spent the last four years in North Dakota, so we were amazed to see
such luscious greenery when we arrived. My daughter will be entering kindergarten and I will be teaching
8th grade. My teaching philosophy is to ‘ask not what God can do for you, but what you can do for God.’ I
believe I have a calling to teach; to shape young people into fine effective citizens, who will go on to serve
God and society. Throughout the scripture is the emphasis on servanthood to both God and others. As a
teacher, I can be a servant to the students and their families, by not only providing quality education,
focused on accommodating student needs, but also through the aid of the Holy Spirit, I can bring students
into a relationship with God and nurture that faith.
Joshua Alabata, Athletics Director
Being a former student, volunteer, and substitute teacher at Hinsdale Adventist Academy, it is a blessing
to be able to serve full-time as the new Athletic Director and P.E. Teacher. Having a career that focuses on
the nurturing, education, and mentoring of youth is truly fulfilling and rewarding. I sincerely believe that
sports and fitness play a key role in enhancing the education process of all aspects of life including the
physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual. Through participation in athletics, students are able to
develop good habits and practices which would prepare them for future success both in this world and in
the Kingdom. As a former student athlete, I learned the values of hard work, integrity, teamwork,
responsibility, and accountability. Throughout my educational and professional career, I have also
learned the importance of focusing on Jesus. As an educator at Hinsdale, I will do my best to help my
students learn these same values to become shining lights for Christ in the world we live in.
Sandra Mendez, Art teacher for Grades 5-12
After thoroughly enjoying teaching photography at HAA for 5 years, I am looking forward to expanding
the art program to include drawing, painting and mixed media. The opportunity for creativity can be very
spiritual. The first thing God did in the Bible was to create! He had to have such a broad imagination to
create so many different varieties of animals, people, plants and more! Having an opportunity to be
creative helps us start to think through His eyes and as we go through the process we are appreciating the
Creator. In a digital world, everyone is too fast and we get too lazy to appreciate what He has created. By
taking our children through an art class, we are slowing them down and showing them God.
PRINCIPALS’ CORNER
After three years of serving as Associate Principal, Robert Jackson is excited to take on the role of Principal at HAA
With God’s blessing and grace, 2013/14 promises to be our
strongest so far. The new partnership with the Alumni
Awards Foundation will give us the ability to achieve some
extraordinary goals for our students and our school
community. Dr. Babcock’s leadership has provided us with a
strong foundation to build on and I am very excited about
working with you to achieve the best we possibly can for our
students. Excellence is the standard we are aiming for in all
things.
“Speed of Trust” is the theme we are being guided by this
year, based on the book by Steven M.R. Covey. In order for us
to reach our goals more quickly, it is imperative that we learn
to trust one another. Covey says that ‘nothing is as fast as the
speed of trust’ and that ‘speed happens when people truly
trust each other.’ My commitment to you is that I am going to
make every effort to earn your trust by being transparent,
direct and by being accountable to you for the decisions that
are made.
There are 13 behaviors that the book discusses. We will be
using each of these as a focus within our Professional
Learning Communities (PLCs—defined in more detail later)
and will develop them as a monthly theme for the entire
school. The behaviors are as follows: Talk Straight,
Demonstrate respect, Create transparency, Right wrongs,
Show loyalty, Deliver results, Get better, Confront reality,
Clarify expectations, Practice accountability, Listen first, Keep
commitments and Extend trust.
It is very exciting to think about the culture transformation
that could take place as a result of us all taking on board these
behaviors.
I am more excited now than when I first arrived at HAA three
years ago. Trials and tribulations make us firm in our resolve.
As a result God has put a really strong team together here at
HAA with new windows of opportunities for our children.
I believe I am leading an amazing team of dedicated people
whose goal is to bring out the best in your child . I am very
pleased to have the support of two experienced and talented
men – J Michael Carlos and Thomas Dunham, your new Vice
Principals, along with a great support staff and teaching team.
May God bless each one of you as you prepare for the new
year.

HAA’S NEW BOARD
As part of the criteria for becoming a Renaissance Network School, HAA was required to change the constitution
dictating how the board is made up. Our school is now being lead by highly qualified professionals who are passionate
about HAA’s future!
On June 25, 2013, the new board of Hinsdale Adventist
on spiritual strength, academic strength, teacher and adAcademy (HAA) was born. While the new board met and ministrative professional growth and accountability, and
envisioned what HAA would look like in 5 years,
an excellent physical plant. The New Board now focuses

board members prayed that the Lord continue to bless
HAA. I ask you to do the same. We all believe that
every child needs to be taught in a loving, nurturing,
Christ-centered environment, where they can discover
God's great purpose for them.

WHO’S WHO ON THE HAA BOARD
HAA’s Board consists of highly professional people, dedicated to the success of our
students and the long-term future of our school. Hinsdale Adventist Academy now has in
place a strategic board focused on financial sustainability over the long term.
Doctor Tessalee received his Bachelors degree from Northwestern University. His Medical
degree is from Rush Medical College. He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Rush University Medical Center. Following a Cardiology Fellowship, he
subspecialized in interventional cardiology, and trained to perform cardiac and peripheral
interventions at the Rush Heart and Vascular Institute. Doctor Tessalee and his wife
Daphne have three children attending HAA. He successfully lead the previous HAA board as
chair, with his most noteworthy accomplishment being the commencement of a new relationship with the Alumni Awards Foundation. He will continue as Board Chair this year.
Ivy Posada, is a human resource professional with over 15 years of experience in non
profit organizations, professional services, engineering and technology companies,
manufacturing, and real estate sectors. She has worked for companies including the
Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, Ernst & Young, Cap Gemni, Telezology,
Inc., and OneSource HR. Ms. Posada’s dream for every HAA student is that they
have the opportunity to reach their full potential while at our school. Her aim is to
help provide an energetic learning environment, motivated teachers, cutting edge
curriculum, and an environment where church, home, and school are partnering
together to nurture student’s hearts to serve the Lord in whatever path their lives
lead them. Ivy’s two daughters both attend HAA.
Heather Hoffman, newly elected president of the HAA Home & School Association, is the
mother of two students and a Hinsdale Jr. Academy alumni. She brings 15 years of marketing and development experience to the board, with specific areas of interest in strategic planning, project and relationship management. With a passion for Christian education and a strong belief in Christian service Heather prays that her experience and God
given talents will be an asset in further positioning HAA as a institution of excellence and
purpose.
David Crane is the CEO of Adventist Midwest Health, a network of not-for-profit hospitals
and outpatient-based health care facilities in Chicago’s western suburbs . A strong
proponent of Adventist education, David has spearheaded some excellent partnership
initiatives with HAA over the past three years including the Certified Nursing Assistant’s
program. Twenty HAA students and twenty community members have now graduated
from this state-certified program. We look forward to moving forward together to reach
our community for Christ.
Thomas Gallagher is the chief executive officer for Dairy Management Inc. ™ (DMI). In
this role, Tom directs DMI’s strategic programming and operations, including strategic
partnerships; nutrition, product and consumer research, export and ingredient marketing; health and wellness, industry image; strategic communications and finance and
administration. Tom is passionate about health leading to him spearheading national
initiatives such as “Fuel up to play 60” and “GenYouth”. GenYouth is a collaboration
of students, schools, communities, business partners and thought leaders to identify
solutions that improve nutrition and physical activity and aim to make a lasting difference in children’s lives. His aspiration for HAA is that it becomes the go-to source for
Christian children seeking a well-rounded education and experience. Tom’s son graduated from HAA last year.
Nathan Hoffman is a trial lawyer for Winston and Strawn, and a member of the Trial Bar for
the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He handles complex
cases, including product liability, antitrust, and white collar criminal defense. Nathan
previously served on HAA’s board for three years. His hope is that, “ We will provide a unique
combination of spiritual, social, and academic excellence for K-12 students that is unparalleled. Our
goal will be to equip students with a skill set that unlocks their potential and guarantees their success.”
Kurt Martz is the Facilities Manager at Adventist Hinsdale
Hospital with responsibilities overseeing Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations of the Hospital. He also serves as the
Advocacy Liaison for a local Chapter of the American Society of Healthcare Engineers in
which he assists in this distribution of new Health Care code changes and interpretations. Kurt’s interests are in his family, work, and church and has dedicated his life to
these areas.
Kurt first became involved with Hinsdale Adventist Academy in 2009 serving as a board
member and has served as the Facilities Chair the past three years. His two children
attend HAA.
Alex Bokich is a Managing Director -Senior Mortgage Banker at The Private Bank. Two
of his three children currently attend HAA, and his third child is about to start college.
Alex and his wife Nicole have been involved in various capacities at the school for many
years. Alex’s hope for HAA is that our school will be the first choice for education for
every SDA Family in Illinois. His goal for HAA is that it strives to exceed every barometer
for K-12 schools in North America.
Mike Murrill, is VP/Chief Financial Officer at Adventist
Bolingbrook Hospital since August 2011. Mike has worked
within the Adventist Health System for ten years, most recently as finance manager at
Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, a position he held since August 2008. Mike says, “ I
have a Christian education, and I believe in the incredible value of combining a spiritual
environment with rigorous academic standards. Done right, a Christian education can prepare students to bring great value to their future spheres of influence. If we miss this mark,
and do not balance spiritual growth with high academic standards we miss a great opportunity. I want to be a part of developing a system that creates Christian ambassadors for
the Kingdom of Heaven. Mike’s sons both attend HAA in Little Lambs and Kindergarten.
EX-OFFICIO BOARD MEMBERS
Robert Jackson has been teaching for almost twenty years in several different states, and
has been working as Associate Principal at HAA for the past three years. Robert’s educational insights, passion for each one of his students and his day to day operational experience will be invaluable to the board. He has recently completed a Masters in Educational
Leadership through Concordia University.
Garry Sudds, is the Lake Union Superintendent of Education. He has forty two years of experience in Seventh-day Adventist education. Garry’s work history includes service in elementary education, secondary Bible instruction, boys dean, academy principal, superintendent of education, associate director of education and Lake Union director of education. “My prayer for Hinsdale Adventist Academy is that it will continue to assist students
in knowing Christ experientially and equip each student to serve God with their full poten- Robert Jackson
tial. Service to God and the abandonment of one’s life to Him provides the Christian basis
for academic excellence.”
Ruth Horton is a career educator and the Educational Superintendent of the Illinois Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. She focuses on transforming the practices of teachers and educational leaders with a firm belief that,
“knowledge of God is the foundation of all right education” CT, 422. As an educator, Ruth has served in both public and
private schools, at the elementary through university levels. She frequently speaks at churches, conducts education
workshops and forums; personal and women’s ministries workshops; and presents at conferences and conventions, including the North American Division Teachers’ Convention; and the international American Education Research Association (AERA) convention. She holds a masters degree in educational administration from Andrews University and doctor
of education degree in Educational Leadership from the National College of Education at National Louis University. She
is married to Pastor Michael Horton, and they have three adult sons, all graduates of Hinsdale Adventist Academy.
Pastor Ron Schultz has been the Hinsdale Seventh-day Adventist Church senior pastor since the fall of 2006. Prior to
moving to the Midwest, Pastor Ron served as a pastor for 27 years in the Northwest. During that time he also taught
Bible at a junior academy as well as several other classes. His passion for Adventist Education stems from two things: 1)
his deep appreciation for the 19 years of Adventist Education he’s experienced, and 2) the training to be a Christian educator he received at Walla Walla University, a Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher education. Pastor Ron has
served on HAA’s board for several years and has been selected to represent the constituent churches.
Wendel Tucker, although not officially a board member, will attend all board meetings as a representative of the Alumni Awards Foundation. Wendel is the officially appointed school manager and will spend a considerable amount of time
on the ground at HAA, working to accomplish the goals set forth in the Education Business Plan. Before joining the AAF
team, Wendel was the superintendent of the Alvord School District in Riverside, California, which serves more than
20,000 students. As superintendent Wendel managed more than $300 million in building projects for new schools.
Wendel has nearly 20 years of experience in the public school system and 26 years in the Seventh-day Adventist education system. He has been the principal of two public schools and three Seventh-day Adventist academies.

HAA: HIGHER AIMS ALWAYS
This new school year presents
a new undertaking for Hinsdale Academy (HAA). HAA has historically been
blessed by committed faculty, dedicated administration, devoted alumni, strong constituents in its affiliation
with Hinsdale and other area churches, supportive Hospital leadership,
and committed parents and pastors.
The Illinois Conference has
forged a working relationship with
the Alumni Awards Foundation (AAF)
for the continued growth and development of HAA. Like all of its schools,
the Department of Education of the
conference is heartened by the additional support and emphasis that
AAF’s Renaissance Network will provide to our senior academy to make it
a flagship school in its community and
in our conference.
With nearly a hundred-year
history as an institution, and having
been a senior academy for 17 years
(since 1996), HAA is now moving to a
new phase in its ongoing development. Under the management of the
Alumni Awards Foundation and its
commitment to forge new directions
in Adventist Education, Hinsdale will
embark upon its inaugural year as
part of AAF’s Renaissance Network
innovative programming that was
specifically conceived to respond to
the issues facing Adventist Education
in the new millennium.
While most of the academy’s
administrative cues and vision will
now come from the new governance
structure of the Renaissance Network
team and by a new management approach, the Illinois Conference Department of Education and the employing Illinois Conference will remain
supportive, and hopeful that this undertaking will prove to be a dynamic
new era, which like previous ones,
embody needed adjustments to meet
the challenges of the hour.
Our desire for HAA is unwavering:
that HAA attains its goal of becoming
a school of spiritual and academic excellence recognizing that “Knowledge
of God is the foundation of all right
education” (E White, Counsels to
Teachers, 422). We look forward to
the wholesome and productive partnership with AAF and the Hinsdale
Board of directors that will go a long
way towards making HAA as hub of
Christ-centered education, academic
excellence and college and career
preparedness.
Our prayer is that HAA will continue
to grow and strengthen as its student
body diversifies to meet the unique
context of a great urban metropolis
such as Chicago.

FAREWELL TO THE BABCOCKS

HAPPY 4TH JULY!!
A wonderful group of volunteers came out to represent HAA
at Hinsdale’s annual 4th of July parade. 5000 bottles of water
were individually labeled by volunteers (see picture left) in
the days before the parade and were then chilled. They were
very well received by the residents of Hinsdale on the hot
summer day.
Hinsdale Adventist Academy aims to be a light in our community, providing service for our neighbors at every opportunity.
One of the key aspects of the new school enhancement plan
is to look for additional opportunities for community service.
HAA has made very valuable connections with community
groups at the local events, “Uniquely Thursday” where a
stand is set up to promote our school. We are excited about
working more closely with our community this year.
NEW SCHOOL HOURS AIMED AT
INCREASING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Increasing academic achievement and adding more service
learning opportunities are high priorities for HAA this year. In
order to accomplish these objectives, a number of new initiatives are being introduced.
To start with, the school day will commence at 8:00 am for
the entire school. Students will finish school at 3:15 pm Monday to Thursday, and at 2:00 pm on Fridays. This new schedule will add an additional 1 hr 15 minutes of instructional time
per week. One hour of art will be taught to Grades 5-8 by new
Art teacher, Sandra Mendez, an extra 30 minutes from last
year’s program. The music program, led by new director Cathe
Morse, will also be expanded.
In the elementary and middle schools, the goal is for teachers
to be able to delve deeper with their core curriculum time,
add more hands-on learning and introduce health initiatives.
At the high school level, the increased instructional time will be
dedicated to service learning opportunities from 12-2 each
Friday. Students will actively participate in community service
and outreach projects. Additionally, longer lesson times each
day will mean teachers have the ability to better prepare our
students for the new Advanced Placement classes being
offered in Junior and Senior years.
Another new initiative is the introduction of Professional
Learning Communities (PLC). In a PLC the following happens:
 Members work together to clarify exactly what each student must learn,
 They monitor each student's learning on a timely basis.

They provide systematic interventions that ensure
students receive additional time and support for learning
when they struggle,
 and extend and enrich learning when students have already mastered the intended outcomes.
On the third Wednesday of each month, school will finish at
12:00pm. On these days, teachers will gather in their PLCs to
analyze and assess student’s results, collaborate on lesson
plans to improve student achievement and determine
methods for implementing effective, differentiated instruction.
We are very excited about this new initiative and believe this
added focus will greatly improve student outcomes.

NEW VICE PRINCIPALS
These two outstanding teachers will be assuming additional responsibility this year.
After a successful 17 year teaching career, Mr. Carlos is excited about the future of HAA
and about being a vice-principal. Mr. Carlos has a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction . He loves to spend his free time with his wife Evelyn and two sons. In an address to the teachers he said “I am excited about the plans we have and the potential
that is in our reach. Joining the Renaissance Network has allowed us to be able to push
toward the goal of excellence in all things. I think you will see an immediate change to
the culture of the school that will allow us to be able to reach academic excellence. It is
our goal that every student will graduate from high school ready to take on college, leadership and life. But if they graduate with the highest honors, but weren’t challenged daily
to develop a relationship with God, we will have failed “
Mr. Dunham has been inspiring his students for more than 20 years. He earned his B.A.
in history from Atlantic Union College, and has just completed his Masters degree. He is
married to Patty and has two children attending HAA. According to Mr. Dunham, his
goal is for the HAA team to “First, see each and every student as someone who is able
to be successful. We need to instill in them the desire to learn, and then do everything
in our power to assist them on that ladder of success. We need to come along beside
them, helping, coaching, and mentoring them every step of the way. It is our responsibility to make learning come alive for them, to make each day a day where they will return home both intellectually challenged and intellectually primed for the next opportunity to learn.” Spiritually his charge is that, “we must be spiritual mentors to each of
our students. We know the way, so we must be ever showing them the way. That entails a spiritual life that is ever growing, ever radiating, and ever evident. The things that
we say and do should be aligned with what God wants for these students.”
Delicious vegetables were harvested from our garden
this summer. Our students planted the seeds back in
early Spring. Staff have been tending the garden
throughout the summer with help from Mr.
Velasquez and Mrs. Snyder.

The partnership between Hinsdale Adventist Academy
and Adventist Midwest Health was further strengthened at the recent CEO meetings where a check for
$10,000 was presented to Principal Robert Jackson.
Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s CEO, Mike Goebel,
presented the check to Jackson saying, “The four
hospitals of Adventist Midwest Health are happy to
support the education offered at Hinsdale Adventist
Academy. We hope this donation will help ensure
students seeking to attend the school have the
opportunity to do so.”
CEO of AMH, David Crane, has accepted a position on
the new school board along with Michael Murrill from
Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and Kurt Martz, Plant
Operations Manager at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.
Adventist Hinsdale Hospital has also partnered with
HAA in the Certified Nursing Assistant’s program that
has been running for two years. Our second class of
students have just completed their state exams. The
HR department offered consultancy on resume
preparation and interview techniques for each of the
20 students.
During the months of May and June our art students
held an exhibition of their work in the foyer of
Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. Healing Arts coordinator,
Sue Ketts, said, “I am really looking forward to working
more closely with the Academy next year. We plan on
having another exhibition of the student’s work and
hosting a reception for the artists and their families .”
Hinsdale Adventist Academy is delighted to be working

Our partnership with the Alumni Awards Foundation commences making
HAA a Renaissance network school
Six new Advanced Placement classes are being added in High School
Full time Art teacher is being employed for Grades 5-12
Instructional coaches will be contracted to professionally develop our teachers
New Music Director, Cathe Morse, is adding energy, excitement and new opportunities with the music program.
After school tutoring sessions will be available for all High School students for
free.
Implementation of FACTS financial system to make billing and collections
seamless
Two new vice-principals—Mr. Dunham and Mr. Carlos
The instructional time is being increased right throughout the school which
means you get more value for your educational investment. School will now
commence at 8:00 am.
Increased emphasis on academic achievement and professional development
right throughout the school.
Major capital planning underway to expand the Academy and enable new
learning opportunities.
Expansion of the school garden program.
Increased emphasis on community service and spiritual development of our
students and staff.
