PREFACE3
DEAR READERS,
Rhineland-Palatinate offers historical sites and monumental
buildings in abundance, many of them managed by General
direktion Kulturelles Erbe (GDKE). Under GDKE’s management
are fortresses, castles, antiques and the three outstanding
national museums in Koblenz, Mainz and Trier, as well as the
national monument protection and archaeology departments.
Nestled in a scenic and partly legendary landscape that forms
a unique part of European history, Rhineland-Palatinate is a
destination for the whole family. No less than four UNESCO
world heritage sites can be found here, among them the
Upper Middle Rhine Valley, Roman Monuments, Cathedral and
Liebfrauenkirche in Trier, the Upper German-Raetian Limes and
the Cathedral of Speyer.
GDKE’s many exhibitions, events and educational offers bring
history to life. The main focus of these efforts is always on
making all interested people including the many visitors from
all over the world experience the state’s great cultural
heritage, directly and first hand. With this objective in mind
we constantly advance our visitor concepts – for example by
using digital presentation techniques or audio-visual guides.
We also place special attention on barrier-free access.
On the following pages we gathered lots of useful information
and many tips. Enjoy the discovery tour through RhinelandPalatinate’s cultural treasures!

KAISERTHERMEN
ROMAN BATH CULTURE AT ITS BEST
The Kaiserthermen were designed
as one of the largest public baths of
the Roman empire. With bathing and
wandering halls, sauna and massage
rooms the thermal baths were to
provide relaxation to distinguished
Romans – however, they were never
completed. Declared UNESCO world
heritage site, the mighty ruins –

A bathing facility was set up in this

presumably for ordinary residents
mainly.

KOBLENZ STATE MUSEUM
FASCINATING CULTURAL HISTORY
With its four exhibition buildings
the Koblenz State Museum at Ehren
breit

of mankind across a period of one
million years. The oldest exhibit can
be found at Haus der Archäologie,
the youngest in the main building
as part of the “Zündende Ideen –
Marken aus Rheinland-Pfalz” exhibition where inventors, innovations
and brands that have changed the
world for about 200 years await you.
At Haus des Genusses you can get
to know the “WeinReich RheinlandPfalz”. Here you can taste selected
wines in the Vinothek, supported
by the expert advice of Wine Ambassadors on a monthly basis.
At Haus des Genusses the State
Museum furthermore invites you to
visit the “Tafelkunst und Einheitsbrei – Tischkultur im Barock” exhibition on Baroque dining culture until
May 2015, followed by the tender
temptation of “Schokolade”.
A special highlight awaits you bet
ween 29 March and 25 October
2015. The grand family exhibition
“40 Jahre Playmobil. Eine Abenteuer
reise durch die Zeit” will then open
its gates at Koblenz State Museum.
Many hands-on stations, interactive
media and numerous showcases invite
you to discover and play with the
exhibits. A small, but fine presentation
expects you at Haus der Fotografie,
where changing exhibitions of contemporary photo artists are on display in
addition to an overview of the history
of this medium in the Rhine country.

ONE OF EUROPE’S LARGEST FORTRESSES
This place is unique: For 3,000 years
people had used the high rocky outcrop as refuge. From here the view
extends from the Rhine, Deutsches

built by Prussians and once among
Europe’s largest fortresses: metre
thick walls, ditches, tunnels, bridges

PALATINATE – THE CASTLE REGION
39
PALATINATE –
THE CASTLE REGION
One romantic castle next to the other, mighty
rocks, extended forests – not for nothing is the
Palatinate Germany’s castle region. In the Middle
Ages the region was one of the most important
areas of the Empire. Today you can experience
how kings, counts and knights used to live and
fought for power and wealth on Trifels Castle,
the Dahner Castles or the Hardenburg Castle and
Fortress ruins.
40 PALATINATE – THE CASTLE REGION
ALTENBAUMBURG CASTLE RUINS
FROM STRATEGIC SPOT TO QUARRY
Strategically, the situation at the
exit of the Alsenztal was extremely
favourable. However, from the time
the Raugrafen line had died out
in the 14th century, Altenbaumburg
served merely as quarry. The impressive remains of the wall still allow to
identify the castle’s former structure.
Only the Palas was rebuilt.

NANSTEIN CASTLE RUINS
MIGHTY THRONE ON A SANDSTONE CLIFF
Besieged, destroyed, rebuilt, plundered, destroyed … The history of
Nanstein castle is a tale of the
struggle for power, of successes and
failures, but also of the courage to
start again. Built in the 12th Century
by Frederick I (Barbarossa), one of
Germany’s most famous Emperors,
it grew into one of the Staufer
dynasty’s largest fortified castles.
The “last knight” Franz von Sickingen,
once Lord of Nanstein, died in his

VILLA LUDWIGSHÖHE
LARGE GARDENS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE
Villa Ludwigshöhe is the eye-catcher
high above the Weinstrasse. Ludwig I.
of Bavaria had the ‘Italian-style Villa’
built as a summer residence. The
view from the loggia extends far
over the Palatinate and the Rhine
valley. The interior inspires with fine
and precious hardwood floors and
rich frescos and murals. Today the
Villa is home of the Max-SlevogtGalerie, the State Museum Mainz

ARCHÄOLOGISCHES SCHAUFENSTER SPEYER
TRAVEL BACK IN TIME
The tour through the exhibition leads past the model of a
Franconian grave mound directly into the time tunnel framed by
Roman sarcophagi and architectural elements from the Middle
Ages. At the latest in the main showroom of the “archaeological
window” you are right at the heart of history. Here you discover
finds from Roman graves and prehistoric garbage, e. g. from
settlements of the stone, bronze and iron ages.
In the “Gläsernen Werkstatt” you
can watch restorers at work. With
great enthusiasm experts outline
different approaches, show you the
equipment of modern restoration
and tell you exciting stories on how
the objects were found or what they
were used for.
STATE ARCHAEOLOGY SPEYER
Current archaeological results or
special items, such as burial finds
from the Roman era in Speyer and
exciting topics like “aerial archaeology” are presented in the context

WE STAND ON HISTORY
Rheinhessen and its greater area are full of archaeological
sources. In the course of our investigations we therefore
always encounter important cultural-historical finds, from
prehistoric times, all the way to the recent past. We, the
state archaeologists, document and secure these historic
treasures. Particularly interesting insight into our work –
usually scheduled at short notice –
can be gained on occasion of our
current excavation tours.
Red container boxes on the
area of the future archaeological centre in Mainz and in
front of the State Parliament
building will inform visitors
about the planned excavations in 2015. Together with
the Römisches Mainz initiative we will present the latest
results in the showroom of the

What is a cellarium of a layman refectory? What does a Laubenganghaus look like? Why do citizens try to rescue an old water
