THE WORKS
Wales & West Utilities
Reliability, ease of use and machine availability are big priorities
for a utility company. When you have responsibility for the
distribution of gas through a network of 35,000km of pipelines,
serving homes and businesses from the North of Wales to the
Cornish coast, you have to be able to trust your equipment
and your dealers.
Wales & West Utilities (WWU) owns, operates and maintains
the infrastructure for gas distribution across Wales and the
South West of England.
The company runs a fleet of 62 mini excavators of which
39 machines are the latest JCB 8018, with a further four
8025ZTS excavators working primarily in the North of Wales.
“JCB was successful in winning our mini excavator tender two
years ago,” says WWU’s Transport Manager Andy Pettiford.
“The machines have proven popular with our operators and
are a cost effective part of our operation.”
The mini excavators are used by maintenance teams, for the
installation of new services and for the reinforcement and
replacement of the existing network. With WWU’s investment
programme of £2 million every week, the machines have to be
ready to work. Supplied by local dealer Holt JCB, the mini
excavators have been living up to expectations.
The performance of the 8025 has been really good.”
WWU also uses the JCB machines at its innovative training
centre in Treforest, South Wales. The company has built
a complete street, including bungalows, semis, detached
houses and a block of flats, within a huge warehouse, allowing
training in all weathers.
Each building has full gas and electricity supplies installed,
allowing trainers to simulate supply faults both in the road and
in the buildings. The machines are used to dig up the street
and to reinstate once the fault has been rectified.
“Every operative has to go through this training every five
years,” says Training Manager Paul Saurin.
“So that’s over 1,000 operatives every five years.”
Operators are also trained and assessed within the centre,
ensuring that Wales & West Utilities not only has the most
productive minis on the market, but well trained operators
to work them.
“We have the machines on a six year life,” says Mr Pettiford.
“Repair and maintenance work is carried out through a fleet
management company, mainly using Holt JCB’s service
engineers. They are certainly providing what we need and the
level of back-up is good.”
The latest additions to the fleet are the four 8025ZTS models,
which were purchased for their greater digging abilities and
improved performance.
“The ZTS machines are working in North Wales where
there is a large amount of replacement work underway,” says
Mr Pettiford.
“We needed the performance of the bigger machines, but the
zero tailswing design means that we can keep the machines
working within a confined area, operating within barriers.

THE WORKS
WHC Hire Services
There can’t be too many plant hire companies in the UK that are
investing heavily in new machinery. Worcester-based hire firm
WHC Hire Services is bucking the trend, ploughing 1.5 million
into a depot expansion programme and at least that amount
into its plant fleet.
“We’re just in the process of investing £1.5m in a new site” says
company owner James Clutterbuck.
“Then we’ll be investing several million in new kit to stock
the depot.”
WHC is unusual in its approach to the plant hire market. As well
as offering a wide range of equipment for hire, the company
has developed its own equipment and facilities for testing Hand
Arm Vibration and Whole Body Vibration.
Since 2005 Whole Body Vibration Testing has been an integral
part of WHC Hire Services’ health and safety policy, relating
both to its own equipment, and to customer sites.
This focus on low noise and vibration
is just one of the
6
reasons that WHC includes more than 90 JCB mini and midi
excavators on its fleet, from the Micro to the 8 tonne 8085.
“Low vibration, good stability, excellent serviceability and the
fantastic back-up that we get are the main reasons for buying
JCB,” says Mr Clutterbuck.
“We can’t get anything near as good as what we get from Gunn
JCB, and we have tried. Problems do arise, of course they do,
but I want that machine up and running on the same day.”
Not content with ensuring that customers can hire the best
equipment on the market, with the best levels of service, WHC
has even developed what it considers to be the safest means of
machine transportation.
The patented Track Lock System is fitted
to a regular plant trailer and literally locks the mini excavator’s
tracks in place during transport. An optional breaker carrier
removes the need for manual handling issues and works as an
anti-theft device as the breaker can be locked to the trailer.
Though not for sale, customers can hire trailers equipped
with the Track Lock System along with their
mini excavator. It is this service that is
winning return business, and which
is keeping WHC’s utilisation
remarkably high.
“We have had very good utilisation,” says Mr Clutterbuck.
“I haven’t had a mini available in the last three weeks. We’re
not the cheapest, I don’t do cheap, but we offer a package of
machine, vibration and noise testing and the Track Lock System
to suit the needs of the client.”
Though based in Worcester the firm has machines working as
far afield as Yorkshire and Cornwall. With that in mind it is vital
that WHC can rely on local back-up from JCB dealers across
the country, and Gunn JCB in particular.
“The relationship that we have with Gunn JCB is a real
partnership,” he says.
“They provide a first class service that we simply
cannot find anywhere else.”

THE WORKS
Abba Plant Hire
Walker Groundworks
In the soft, boggy ground around Kelso in the borders, Walker
Groundworks need machines that are versatile enough to
handle all kinds of terrain.
The popularity of compact excavators may have started with
1.5 and 2 tonne machines, but it is the larger midis such as JCB’s
8080 that are increasingly in demand today. For Scottish firm
Walker Groundworks, the 8080 is the ideal size, sitting in the
middle of the firm’s fleet between much smaller minis and the
firm’s larger JS145.
“It’s a really nice size of machine,” says owner Gregor Walker.
“They are a good size for drainage and general site work, and
the fact that you can now have proportional control means I
can make the machine versatile enough to operate an Engcon
Tiltrotator which is invaluable around here.”
With 17 machines on the fleet, the company has everything from
crawler excavators to two of JCB’s 714 articulated dump trucks.
“I believe that by buying British we are keeping somebody in
a job at the factory, we’re supporting British industry.”
The performance and productivity of the JCB 8 tonner has
certainly lived up to expectations, with little more than regular
servicing required.
Walker has a good relationship with local dealer Scot JCB.
“We have had no problems, you just can’t fault Scot JCB for
back-up. That’s one of the reasons why a lot of people in this
area stay with JCB,” says Mr Walker.
Confidence in the whole life performance and productivity
of JCB machinery, backed by a well established dealer that
has a strong relationship with the customer, is what keeps
many companies coming back to JCB. However it is continual
development of market-leading machines like the 8080 that
keep customers ahead of the competition on site.
“Around 99% of our fleet is JCB,” says Mr Walker.
Exhaust emissions are becoming an increasingly important factor
to the construction industry, particularly when working inside
a bakers shop in Lincoln. When Abba Plant tendered for work
inside “Laurens Patisserie” they took an innovative approach
of connecting the hydraulic hoses of the JCB 8030 to a power
source placed outside the building. This eleviated any emissions
so that their machine could work safely inside the bakery.
Abba Plant has a very strong association with the JCB machines.
From a massive fleet of more than 550 items of operated plant,
more than 200 bear the JCB logo, all supplied by local dealer
TC Harrison JCB. Those machines include virtually every mini
model, from the micro to the 8080 8 tonne midi, a machine that
is proving increasingly popular with Abba’s customers.
“If someone calls us for a Loadall telehandler, a backhoe
loader or a mini excavator, customers will ask for a JCB,” says
Nick Howe, Manager at Lincolnshire hire firm Abba Plant Hire.
“We only operate JCB when it comes to minis.”
8
Despite in some cases running machines for longer than in the
past, this has not had a negative impact on residual values, while
the strength of build and robust design of the JCB machines
is providing long term reliability.
“Our service and maintenance work is done in house as we
have large workshop facilities. However we do monitor parts
purchases, as we only buy genuine JCB parts from TC Harrison
JCB. We haven’t seen any increase in parts demand as the
machines work for longer.”
Abba Plant Hire has built up a strong relationship with TC
Harrison over the years, and with JCB itself. “TC Harrison JCB
is our preferred supplier, they are much easier to deal with than
some manufacturers” he says.
“The machines continue to get better and, providing nothing
changes, we will continue to buy from JCB.”

THE WORKS
JCB Compact Products
JCB Compact Products has really seized the opportunity
presented by the recent downturn, and the subsequent
reduction in the order book, to make significant changes to its
production plant in Cheadle, Staffordshire.
“We’ve taken this opportunity to listen once again to the
changing needs of our customers,” says Chris Spring, Managing
Director of the compact excavator factory.
“As a result of the recession, some of our customers are running
their machines longer than they would have done in the past.
They need enhanced durability, total reliability and strong
resale values.
“While we have always had a focus on using the best quality
components, recent improvements in our paint and assembly
processes means that JCB machines benefit from an improved
appearance, robust construction and most importantly they
reduce the overall cost of ownership for the customer.”
With a clear focus on the needs and expectations of
10
our customers, Compact Products has concentrated on raising
the bar even higher, keeping the JCB mini and midi excavator
range a step ahead of the competition. The production facility
has been redesigned, with a re-organisation of assembly lines
and an improved quality programme that includes two ‘no-fault
forward’ stations on each line. This ensures that every machine
is ready to go to work for our customers when it leaves the
factory, providing a guaranteed return on investment from the
first day on site.
“That return on investment is key for our customers,” says
Mr Spring.
“Another area we have looked at is machine security. We are in
the process of introducing immobilisers and unique keys or key
pads on all of our mini excavators. We also launched LiveLink
Lite last year - a telematic system that can be used
to track machine
location and improve fleet management.”
The popular 8014, 8016, 8018 and 8020 are already fitted with
an immobiliser and unique key as standard. The system has
been approved by Thatcham and was the first in the industry to
receive the organisation’s 3 star accreditation last year.
Thatcham accreditation is recognized by many insurance
companies and means that customers can expect reduced
premiums and offer nil theft access due to improved
machine security.
JCB recognizes that the decision to purchase a JCB mini
excavator is no less important to a customer than the buying
process involved in JCB’s heaviest crawler excavators.
A mini excavator has to deliver the performance and productivity
that customers expect, from day one, right through its operating
life. That is why JCB Compact Products is ensuring that every
mini and midi excavator meets the highest possible build
quality standards, with reliability and durability guaranteed
by a market-leading two-year JCB warranty. “Meeting our
customers’ expectations is not enough for JCB Compact
Products,” says Mr. Spring.
“Our aim is to exceed those expectations, delivering
a market-leading range of compact excavators that will boost
the productivity and profitability of our customers, in all
industry sectors.”

THE WORKS
Roadform Civil Engineering
Roadform Civil Engineering has been a loyal JCB customer
since the company was started in 1988. Build quality, machine
performance, value for money and communication with the
company and the dealer are the main reasons for this strong
relationship.
“When we started we bought two machines, a JCB and
a competitor machine,” says Managing Director Edgar Potter.
“The JCB was the preferred machine, so we have stuck with
JCB as we find it difficult to fault them.”
Based in Newton Abbott, Devon, the company runs 24 machines
in total, all of which are JCBs. This fleet includes six midi
12
excavators, including 8065, 8080 and the latest 8085 models.
Roadform is mainly involved in civil engineering, groundworks
and bitmac surfacing projects, including local authorities.
The company works within Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and
Dorset, to maintain operating efficiency and be able to respond
rapidly to customers.
Though JCB machines are first choice when it comes to machine
replacement, the company does keep an eye on the rest of the
market. “We occasionally try something different, but we always
come back to JCB, for the quality and the performance that the
machines offer,” he says.
“From our point of view there are few issues with any of the
JCB products.”
Over the last 23 years Roadform has built a strong relationship
with its supplying dealer Holt JCB. But the firm also feels that it
has good lines of communication with JCB itself when required.
“We always deal with Holt, but JCB is very approachable too,”
he comments.
“I can pick up the phone and deal with the manufacturer if we
ever have issues. We are on first name terms with a number of
people at the factory.”
Roadform tends to change its machines after 3-4 years and it
relies on Holt JCB for spare parts and service when required.
“We have large workshops here so we look after the machines
ourselves, but Holt JCB is always there if we need back-up.
“When it comes to changing the machines, JCB is as good
as anything else in terms of residual values. But it’s the cost
to change that matters to me, and JCB provides good value
for money.
“The fleet speaks for itself really. We’ve just started our 23rd
year and everything that we run is in JCB yellow.”

JCB Finance
JCB Finance is JCB’s own, in-house finance company. For
more than 40 years JCB Finance has been specialising in
financing JCB plant and equipment, along with other noncompetitive machinery, for the construction, agricultural and
industrial sectors. Our rates are competitive and they remain
true to the company’s aim of providing fast flexible finance, no
matter what the economic climate. A 20-strong field force of
industry specialists provide a local service, in tune with local
operating conditions.
JCB Finance has developed a number of award-winning finance
products, tailored to the construction industry.
VIP Flexibuy – a fixed rate Hire Purchase agreement that,
unusually, allows early settlement or payment of lump sums
without additional cost, because the interest is calculated daily.
Any lump sums paid during the agreement will consequently
shorten the repayment period.
Take a Break – a finance solution that is unusual because it allows
for unplanned payment holidays, one for each year of a three

year agreement. Each holiday can either be for one month or
two consecutive months so a 36 month agreement could be
extended to a maximum of 42 months. Used in conjunction
with VIP Flexibuy you can still shorten the period by paying lump
sums or extend it if you decide to take a payment holiday. Hence
fix the payment but float the period. This option has proven very
popular, allowing customers to cope with unexpected pressure
on cash flow due to events beyond their control.
Innovative finance solutions like these, coupled to master

speed up the whole process and allow plant to be delivered
to the customer that much quicker. For a competitive quote

While the backhoe loader remains popular, there is little doubt
that the mini and midi excavator have stolen much of the lighter
construction equipment sector in the UK. That is certainly
what civil engineering and building contractor North Midland
Construction has found. With a broad range of machines, the
Nottinghamshire firm has found that its growing line-up of mini
and midi excavators are proving increasingly popular.
“The backhoes and some of the 1 tonne minis have gone by
the by now, everyone wants an 8 tonner,” says Plant Manager
Alan Swain.
“We just can’t get enough of them.”
In the last few years the company has added 10 of JCB’s 8 tonne
midis to its fleet, along with four 5 tonne machines. The firm has
also invested heavily in 2.5 tonne machines, to satisfy the needs
of its utility division.
“We are flat out on utility work, but they have stepped up from
the traditional 1.5 tonne to a 2.5 tonne mini excavator to get the
best performance,” says Mr Swain.
North Midland is a well established construction and civil
engineering firm, with depots around the UK. The firm is heavily
involved in utilities, major civils, highway construction and
general building work.
The company has a large fleet of plant. Increasingly that fleet is
being supplied in JCB yellow.
“All of our machines are supplied through our local dealer TC
Harrison, who provide excellent back-up. But the good thing
about JCB is that there are dealers everywhere,” says Mr Swain.
“We work nationally and we find that you can always get the
parts that you need, and you can get them instantly. More than
50% of our fleet is JCB now.”
Unlike many plant hirers, the contractor looks for longevity in its
equipment. North Midland tends to run its machinery on a seven
year replacement cycle.
“A JCB will stay the distance,” says Mr Swain.
“What’s more, we get good money for them at seven years.
People know what JCB is and they will pay the money for them.”
The final reason for going with JCB is that the company likes to
support British industry. By buying JCB, it feels that it is playing a
part in keeping the UK workforce working.
“We like to keep the money in the country,” says Mr Swain.
However no contractor can afford to have red, white and blue
tinted glasses. Every machine has to earn its keep and keep on
earning for seven years in the case of North Midland’s fleet. That
is something that the JCB machines certainly do.

THE WORKS
Gordon Bow Plant Hire
Lindum Plant
Based in Lincoln, Lindum Plant is a division of the Lindum Group,
a construction company offering new build, refurbishment and
maintenance services. As well as serving the in-house business
on a national basis, Lindum Plant has been a hire firm in its own
right for more than 15 years.
“We travel all over the country with our own internal work” says
Managing Director Tom Robertson.
“We are also a preferred supplier of plant to a number of
national companies.”
Lindum has a large fleet of plant, including more than 50 mini
excavators. Of that number at least 40 are JCBs, from the
compact micro to the largest 8085ZTS 8 tonner.
“The JCB is a proven machine and TC Harrison is a first class
dealer,” says Mr Robertson.
“I know, with confidence, that if I rang late in the day the
response is always the same, the parts will be on their way,”
says Mr Robertson.
By offering a wide range of JCB minis the company is able to
keep on top of changing trends within the industry, one of which
has been the growing popularity of the larger midi models.
“It’s definitely changing. A couple of years ago I would have
Preparations for high profile events such as The Royal
Edinburgh Military Tattoo call for the best contractors with
the best quality machinery. Events such as this, in the shadow
of Edinburgh Castle, require the job to be completed to plan
and to schedule. To support this, Gordon Bow Plant Hire,
based in Broxburn, West Lothian like to know that they
are being offered the best in terms of service and
productive machinery.
The plant hire division runs more than 90 machines up to
36 tonnes, including 60 JCBs. There are 22 JCB 8014 mini
excavators, along with 8025s, 8045s and the 8080 midi model.
Mr Bow reports that this 8 tonne machine in particular is proving
popular, as it combines the power and performance of a much
larger excavator with compact dimensions for smaller sites.
“We have been buying JCB machinery for 25 years from
Scot JCB,” says proprietor Gordon Bow.
“Our operators find the JCB excavators very smooth and
comfortable to operate.”
“They are easy to deal with and we get excellent service and
back-up. Scot JCB has really good staff in Edinburgh.”
The company certainly gets plenty of work out of its machines.
The plant hire business is part of the Gordon Bow Group,
which includes structural engineering and fabrication
business Gordon Bow Engineering. Established in 1982,
the company works throughout central Scotland in the public
and private sectors.
16
said that the 804 was the most popular, but now the 8 tonne
machine is very popular,” says Mr Robertson.
“The extra digging power that the machine has is exceptional.
On some sites it is replacing older 11 and 12 tonne excavators.
We are really seeing more emphasis on the midi market now.”
While most of JCBs mini and midi excavators are now coming
as reduced or zero tailswing designs he says that this is more of a
benefit to the hire firm than to many of his customers. Reduced
damage and scratching of bodywork allows hire fleets to keep
mini excavators looking new without having to constantly
respray or change panels.
“There is no specific demand for zero tailswing from our
customers but for me they are better as I don’t have to worry
about the application. We get a lot of use inside buildings for
refurbishment, but now I don’t have to worry about damage to
the counterweight,” says Mr Robertson.
“We change our machinery when required, as we like to keep it
looking fresh, but there is no fixed term.”
Certainly when the time does come for new mini and midi
excavators to join the Lindum Plant fleet, TC Harrison JCB will
be the first dealer to get the call.
“We mostly put our machines out on an operated basis, though
we will put them out self-drive if required,” says Mr Bow.
“We tend to replace the machine after five years or 8,000 hours,
whichever is sooner,” says Mr Bow.
He has no intention of looking elsewhere for the plant division’s
needs. The combination of excellent service, high performance
machinery and the continuous development of increasingly
productive models means that JCB remains at the top of the list.

THE WORKS
Jackson Building Centres
Willow Hire
Over the last decade an increasing number of builders’
merchants have entered into the plant and tool hire business,
mainly offering 1.5 tonne mini excavators as part of a small plant
fleet. Jackson Building Centres has taken the concept much
further, providing its customers with a real one-stop-shop to
meet their building machinery needs.
Under the Jakhire banner, Jackson offers a wide range of
power tools, access equipment, telescopic handlers and mini
excavators, from the 8008 micro to the 8 tonne 8080.
“Most of our customers are small to medium sized builders,”
says group Jakhire Manager Mark Shepherd.
“By exposing them to a large range of products we can cater for
all of their needs. We get a lot of work for the heavier machines,
as we are one of the few builders’ merchants who offer that
one-stop-shop approach.”
The company has more than 100 mini excavators on the fleet,
supplied by local dealer TC Harrison JCB.
“I was looking for a one-stop-shop supplier for hydraulic power
packs, mini excavators and telescopic handlers. But I was
also looking for a dealer network that could service all of our
locations throughout the East Midlands,” says Mr Shepherd.
There are plenty of family-run businesses in the plant sector,
as younger generations work their way through the company,
learning the business and eventually taking on management
roles. Indeed JCB is perhaps the best known family firm in the
equipment market.
Dan O’Brien has taken a slightly different route however,
a year ago starting a separate plant and tool hire company with
the backing of his father Michael O’Brien, who runs successful
national firm M O’Brien Plant Hire. Willow Hire is based just
off the M1 near Luton, supplying a range of small tools to
8 tonne excavators.
Though a separate business, Mr O’Brien is following in the
footsteps of his father by running a mixed fleet, including JCB
mini excavators. Willow Hire has 10 minis in total at present,
including six 8014 1.5 tonners and two micros, supplied by local
dealer Watling JCB.
“We’ve been very happy with the JCBs,” says Mr O’Brien.
“The 1.5 tonne mini is very versatile and a strong performer, while
the micros can get into places that the 8014 is too big to access.”
Though the equipment works relatively closely to Willow’s
18
“TC Harrison fits that requirement and gives us one point of
contact for sales and service.”
With branches throughout Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire,
Derbyshire and Northamptonshire, Jackson is geographically
well placed to serve a wide range of customers. Having JCB
dealer premises within easy reach of all of those depots provides
the company with peace of mind and the knowledge that any
issues can be quickly dealt with.
“We have a very good relationship with TCH and any issues
that we’ve had have been quickly dealt with. Normally we run a
replacement programme of 3-5 years, but in some cases that is
longer at the moment given the economic situation.”
With that in mind, knowing that parts and service are available
within a few miles of each depot, provides reassurance for the
fleet and for Jackson’s customers. The machines are certainly
being kept busy though.
“We have a lot of work for the JCB machines at present, and we
are even having to rehire machines to satisfy customer demand,”
says Mr Shepherd.
base, larger machines can travel much further, particularly if they
are on hire to M O’Brien.
“We work all over. Mostly though the minis will work in a 50
mile radius of Luton,” says Mr O’Brien.
The company is a strong believer in preventative maintenance,
ensuring that every machine goes out ready to work.
“We have five fitters and we go through everything when it
comes in off hire, it gets a full service,” says Mr O’Brien.
“We also have mobile fitters to ensure that machines keep
working on site. We have a good relationship with Watling JCB,
the customer support is good and it is always easy to get parts
when we need them.”
Mr O’Brien is keen to keep the machines fresh, to ensure that
there are few issues on site for customers and he reports that
hire customers are very happy with the JCBs.
There seems little doubt that this is a plant and tool hire business
that is destined for growth. JCB mini excavators, with their
reputation for strong performance and dependable reliability,
have certainly been a good choice for this dynamic hire firm.

THE WORKS
E.ON
JCB has for many years had a process within its design and
development operation called the Voice of the Customer.
Listening to what the customer needs, how the machine
is used and how it can be improved are critical elements of the
engineering process.
One of the most noticeable results of this process, is the 8018
Utility. JCB consulted with a number of major utility suppliers
and contractors to find the ideal specification for the job,
improving safety, reducing damage to asphalt roadways and
pavements and cutting potential damage to the machine itself.
One of those leading suppliers was E.ON, an integrated power
and gas company responsible for both generating and distributing
electricity, and retailing power and gas across the UK.
“The 8018 Utility has a number of good options. It was discussed
with us as part of the development and that went a long way to
making the machine utility friendly,” says Gary Baker, E.ON’s
Fleet Technical Specifications Engineer.
“For us, the machine must be fit for purpose, safe and reliable.
The machine has to work when required, as the businesses are
20
under tremendous pressure to keep supplies on line.”
E.ON runs 58 mini excavators across the country, mostly
JCB 8014 models but with around 10 of the new 8018 Utility
machines now on the fleet.
“I specify the machines based on internal customer
requirements,” says Mr Baker.
“The machines are operated by the various regions within E.ON
businesses. They take responsibility for the day to day running
of the machines.”
Purchased through Gunn JCB, the machines work to a seven
year replacement cycle. It was not simply the specification that
sealed the deal with JCB however.
“The machines are value for money, they are reliable and we
also listen to our internal customer’s choice,” says Mr Baker.
“The extending track width is also a positive move, adding
stability when digging.”
Indeed the 8018 is a very well specified mini excavator. The 1.6
tonne machine comes with the option of a high visibility paint
scheme with reflective decals and logos to make it more visible
when working in busy urban streets. The lower door window
is replaced by a steel panel, to prevent damage, while the rear
counterweight gets additional rubbing strips.
Working lights on the cab roof and the boom are also equipped
with protective guards, and there are fold-out protective blocks
on the dozer blade to prevent the blade edge cutting into road
and pavement asphalt.
Inside the machine the 8018 is supplied with a weight-sensitive
switch in the seat, to ensure that the operator is seated before
the hydraulics can function. The cab also comes with a document
holder to store relevant site safety and operating documentation.
While many of these changes are quite easy to apply, it is only by
listening to, and working with customers, that JCB can provide
the ideal machine for the task.
“The JCB is fit for purpose and is a cost effective, safe machine,”
says Mr Baker.

THE WORKS
Dawnus
You would expect a company based in Swansea to expand
throughout South Wales, and then perhaps into South West
England. Opening a depot in Sierra Leone on the West African
coast is perhaps further afield than even the most optimistic
planner would think.
Yet that is what civil engineering and building firm Dawnus has
done, taking on a major construction project for African Minerals
within the country.
Dawnus has grown steadily since it was formed in 2001,
incorporating design and construct projects, partnering with
clients and tackling major civil engineering and building projects.
The firm’s plant division has plenty of JCB machines, and it
regularly calls on local dealer Holt JCB for supply and service.
“It’s the service and the value of the machines that keeps us
buying JCB,” says Plant and Transport Manager Mal Phipps.
“We rely on Holt JCB and we have a really good relationship
with them.”
Dawnus has always run JCB’s JS machines, and has a number of
JCB minis in its fleet. The firm has added two of the larger midi
machines to the line-up, an 8065 and an 8085, to replace older
models. The improved productivity and performance offered
by JCB’s two largest midi excavators has made them popular
machines and Dawnus has been quick to spot their potential.
“We’ve got quite a few larger JCB excavators and these two
machines looked like they could really perform,” says Mr Phipps.
22
Phillip Summers Groundworks
“We only use the equipment on our own sites, but these
machines will have a variety of operators, so it is important that
they can get to grips with them straight away. Our operators
definitely like the JCBs.”
Since the two midis arrived they have been kept working on a
range of sites, throughout Wales and the South West. Dawnus
has recently been awarded a four year, £6 million framework
contract with Gwynedd County Council in North Wales, to
upgrade and improve hard landscaping within Caernarfon and
Bangor.
“We’re fairly busy at the moment, though the job in Sierra Leone
has certainly come along at the right time,” says Mr Phipps.
Dawnus has 30 employees from the UK working in Africa and
is training local operators. All of the plant is sent from the UK,
so the firm has to have suppliers that it can trust. For the most
part it has stuck with those dealers that it knows and trusts in
the UK.
“That’s what we like about Holt JCB, they provide a very good
service,” says Mr Phipps.
Traditionally the company has changed its fleet on a 3-4 year
replacement cycle. However in the current climate, he says that
may be stretched slightly on some machines. Even more reason
to be certain that it can get spare parts and service back-up.
“With JCB the service that we get from Holt is excellent,” says
Mr Phipps.
There is a saying that in business if you stand still, you are
actually going backwards. Nowhere is that more so than in the
construction equipment market.
“The progress that JCB has made in the 11 years that we
have been running the machines has been outstanding,” says
Phillip Summers, Managing Director of Bradford contractor
Phillip Summers Groundworks.
“Not only is JCB consistently at the forefront of manufacturing,
design and development, but they listen to their customers too.”
Summers has been in business for 17 years. The family firm
offers a complete groundworks service, from sewer connection
and muckshifting, to foundations and asphalt paving. Summers
runs a fleet of plant for hire and a number of road tippers.
As NRAWSA-accredited Street Works contractors, around 95%
of the firm’s work is for local authorities within West Yorkshire,
mainly on highways contracts. The firm is also regularly called
in to work on overnight possession contracts on the local
motorway network, a task that demands absolute reliability and
total availability from the machines.
“Performance for us is crucial,” says Mr Summers.
“We might use the JCB’s on a local authority job all day, and
then move them onto the motorway contract over night.
Breakdowns are just not an option and reliability is everything
to us.
“The good news is that we haven’t had a breakdown on a JCB
in the evening at all.”
Summers runs 8018 and 8052 minis, along with a number of
2CX and 3CX backhoe loaders.
“We moved over completely to JCB 11 years ago for their
reliability, serviceability and the machines’ outstanding quality.
TC Harrison JCB has service down to a tee. Nothing is too
much trouble for them,” says Mr Summers.
To ensure that the machines provide maximum utilisation,
Summers changes its mini excavators every two to three years.
In that way the company can provide customers with reliable
excavators and keep up with improvements and machine
developments from JCB.
“By buying new machines regularly we benefit from the latest
technology, in terms of performance and productivity,” says Mr
Summers.
It also ensures that as a leading groundworks contractor,
Summers is never standing still.

MAP Plant and Vehicle Hire
Reliable dealer back-up is vitally important in today’s fast
moving business environment. For many companies the location
and relationship with the dealer can be a deciding factor in
machine choice.
“Scot JCB’s back-up and service is without doubt the best
there is in Scotland,” says director Marc Allan, of MAP Plant and
Vehicle Hire.
“Although we have our own trained fitters, the dealer offers
service and maintenance when required. Scot JCB is one of
the most helpful and resourceful dealers and I believe through
everybody’s hard work that we enjoy a fruitful relationship.”
Based in Bathgate, MAP covers the whole of Scotland and the
North of England with self-drive hire machinery. MAP has more
than 100 machines in the fleet, including models from a 1.5
tonne mini to a 22 tonne crawler excavator.
“Around 96% of the fleet is JCB,” says Mr Allan.
“We are currently placing an order for more 5 and 8 tonne midi
excavators, as well as another six 1.5 tonne machines.”
The company was established in 2009 and offers the equipment
with a wide range of attachments. Mr Allan is particularly
pleased with the performance of the JCB machines, noting
changes to the latest models to bring further reliability and
productivity gains.
The 8018 pictured has been rented by MAP to Dem-Master
Demolition Ltd. Richard McCulloch of Dem-Master said “The JCB
8018 has been working on several demolition reduction contracts
and has proved to be a very reliable and well balanced machine.
“But it’s not just performance. We buy JCB for the overall
package, finance, warranty, quality and the spare parts
availability. Plus we get from Scot JCB the service and the backup and importantly, the local knowledge.”
This whole life experience continues into the disposal of the
machine too. JCB and dealer Scot JCB, have a strong reputation
in the Scottish market, and this is reflected in resale demand.
“The residual value of any JCB is, and always has been,
exceptional,” says Mr Allan.
“I believe that from Managing Director Steve Bryant, through
the sales staff, parts department, service engineers and the
credit control department, that Scot JCB works with you as a
company, and they understand and empathise with our needs.”

Billingham
& Kite
The combination of JCB’s robust midi excavators and the firm’s
market-leading Loadall telescopic handlers is fast becoming
the machinery team of choice for Britain’s house builders.
Stourbridge developer Billingham and Kite has transferred
across from the backhoe to an 8085 ZTS as its main earthmover
on site.
“Its all about manoeuvrability really and the ability to dig 360
degrees,” says Director Roy Billingham.
The performance and productivity of the latest 8.5 tonne
machine has been more than up to the task. “We’ve been very
pleased with the 8085,” says Mr Billingham.
“The zero tailswing feature in particular has been excellent,
reducing the possibility of damage on site and improving health
and safety.”
JCB Attachments
A JCB mini or midi excavator is far more than simply a compact
digging machine. Even the smallest model in the range becomes
a highly versatile tool carrier, when equipped with a range of
JCB buckets and powered attachments.
From hydraulic breakers to augers, pipe-handlers to selector
grabs, JCB Attachments produces a wide array of work tools,
each one specifically designed for optimum compatibility with
JCB’s mini and midi excavator line-up. With single and twin
directional low and high-flow auxiliary hydraulics available,
powered attachments can greatly increase productivity, reduce
fatigue for operatives on site and boost the performance of your
JCB compact excavator.
The most recent example of this is a pipe-handling attachment
that is currently under development to meet the needs of utility
contractors. The attachment is specifically designed to work
with the 8018 Utility machine that was unveiled last year.
The pipe handler can be used to hydraulically clamp onto pipe
with a diameter of 90-180mm. This allows operatives a safe and
efficient means to unload pipe from a transport trailer and install
into prepared trenches. By using the pipe handling attachment
companies greatly reduce the risk to operatives during unloading
and in the trench, while boosting productivity.
Attachments need not be so site specific however. Hydraulic
breakers for instance are a useful addition to any fleet, for
demolition work, rock breaking and general civils projects. Even
a wide range of buckets, each specifically designed to match the
performance of your JCB machine, can greatly increase the
utilisation and productivity of the excavator.
All of JCB Attachments’ buckets and work tools are available
to order through your local dealer and have been designed and
approved for operation with your JCB mini excavator. Peace
of mind is included as standard too, as all JCB Attachments’
products are covered by a reliable JCB warranty and fully
backed by your local dealer.
The company has been in business for 53 years, working solely
in residential development for the last 40 years. Billingham and
Kite has regularly opted for JCB machines, supplied by local
dealer Gunn JCB.
“We’ve been running JCB’s for 35 years now,” says
Mr Billingham.
“We have Gunn JCB to do all the servicing and look after the
machines, and they have always looked after us very well.
We can easily pop in to Gunn to pick up oils or spares as they are
only half an hour away.”
Three of the company’s staff operate the 8085 and they
have all found it easy to get to grips with the midi excavator.
The company has no fixed replacement policy, changing
machines on condition rather than hours.
The transition from backhoe to midi excavator has been
successful, with the peace of mind that the company has not
had to change supplier or dealer to find the most productive
solution. The company has also been able to maintain its ‘Buy
British’ approach.
“The JCB has always been a good product, and it’s made not
far from us here in the Midlands, so we like to support local
industry,” says Mr Billingham.

NEM Plant
Apex Plant Hire
All mini excavators can handle a wide range of buckets, and most
will be powerful enough to drive attachments such as breakers
and augers. For some however, specialist attachments require
the ultimate in hydraulic performance. Northamptonshire firm
NEM Plant is a civils and concrete flooring contractor working
mainly in the agricultural building market. With eight JCBs
NEM depends heavily on the performance and productivity of
each model.
“The mini excavators are used pretty much on every site,
particularly the 8025 as we can tow it behind the Land Rover,”
says Director James Oliver.
High auxiliary hydraulic flow is also a reason for opting for the 8025.
“We have a flail head for clearing scrubland that we run on the
JCB,” says Mr Oliver.
“When we looked at the 8025 originally, I did look at everything
else on the market, in particular at hydraulic performance. The
JCB came out top with the highest hydraulic flow for the weight
of the machine. It really is the best 2.5 tonne machine to handle
the flail.”
NEM is no stranger to the JCB range and has run the machines
for many years. The company has a strong relationship with
local dealer Watling JCB, both for supply of equipment and for
parts and service back-up.
“We originally went with JCB because they are an established
firm with an established dealer network,” says Mr Oliver.
“Some other manufacturers chop and change their dealers and
there is no continuity. We know where we are with Watling
and JCB.
“Also, the machines are very high quality and the price is right,
which is always important. What’s more, JCB Finance makes
putting a deal together very easy. Usually when we start talking
about a machine with Watling, we’ll be up and running with
it just weeks later.”
With market leading performance and productivity, the wide
range of JCB mini excavators provide companies with plenty
of choice to meet their individual operating requirements. For
NEM Plant, the powerful high flow auxiliary hydraulics of the
8025, combined with its compact dimensions and low weight,
make it a total equipment solution that is hard to beat.
Reliability and utilisation are important considerations for any
plant hire or contracting company. For a new business just
building relationships with customers, they can be critical.
“Every time a machine is down we can’t hire it out, so it is
essential to get the right machinery with the best back-up
possible,” says David Marriott, Director of Apex Plant Hire.
“I started off with one mini excavator less than three years ago,
and now we run more than 40 excavators,” says Mr Marriott.
The company was formed in 2008, based in Leicester in the
heart of the Midlands.
It runs larger machinery too and a range of compact equipment
including compaction, mowers, lighting towers, site dumpers
and telehandlers. The majority of the fleet is based on the JCB
line-up, though in some areas he has had to look elsewhere for
machinery.
However dealing with other brands and their dealers has
reinforced the relationship that Apex has with JCB and
particularly local dealer Watling JCB.
“The quality of the machinery is very good and the service and
back-up that we get from Watling is exemplary,” says Mr Marriott.
28
The company has its own fitting staff, but as the machinery is
so young, most of the service and maintenance work has been
carried out by the dealer. However it is Watling’s rapid response
to unplanned breakdowns that ensures that Apex keeps its fleet
running and its customers happy. The firm aims to keep updating
its fleet with the latest models to ensure maximum uptime.
“We have a plan in place to change our high-end equipment no
later than every three years, to maintain the quality and reliability
that we offer,” says Mr Marriott.
“We have a range of hydraulic breakers, earth drills and other
attachments for the mini diggers that have proven very popular,”
says Mr Marriott.
“To enable us to meet the ever increasing demands of both
our customers and the industry we’re constantly updating and
expanding our product portfolio to ensure we stay at the front,
ahead of the competition.
“Our policy is to supply our customers with the most up to date,
productive and reliable plant and equipment available. With JCB
we’re confident that we are offering the best package.”

Johnson Plant Hire
Clonakilty Hire & Sales
Plant hire companies have to ensure that the equipment they
supply is reliable and ready to do the job. For Johnson Plant, a
division of Surrey construction firm Landmark Civil Engineering
and Groundwork Contractors, that meant choosing a dealer
that it could trust.
“When Johnson Plant started, Greenshields JCB guaranteed us
a full service back-up and a fast response time if there were any
issues,” says Kevin Lynch, Construction Director at Landmark.
“They have proven that to us over the last 12 years, rapidly
dealing with the few minor issues that we have had. With regards
to the JCB machines, they are a good, hard working machine
that has been getting better with each new model. Now they
offer a leading warranty as well as being competitive on price.”
Johnson Plant was set up to serve the internal equipment needs
of Landmark, working throughout the south east of England.
Landmark prides itself on customer satisfaction, a commitment
that has led to repeat business and recommendation.
As such the company expects the same degree of customer
service from Greenshields. “In the eyes of Landmark and
Johnson Plant, our relationship with Greenshields JCB is like a
partnership. They deal with any issues and offer a good back-up
and customer service,” says Mr Lynch.
With a range of 14 models from the 8008 micro to the 8.5
tonne 8085, JCB’s Compact Equipment division has a machine
to meet the needs of any customer. For Clonakilty Hire & Sales,
this ability to mix and match between machines has been vital for
continued growth in the current construction climate in Ireland.
“We have eight JCB mini excavators in total, 8018s, 3 tonne and
6 tonne models,” says Managing Director Sean Cowhig.
“However this year we have been scaling back our 6 tonne
machines in favour of 3 tonners, as the 3 tonne market is still
active.”
Based in County Cork, Clonakilty has been serving customers
throughout the west of Cork for more than 22 years. The
company provides everything from a cordless drill to a 6 tonne
midi, with most of the work for the larger machines being in the
drainage and landscaping sectors.
“We’ve been running JCB machines for 10 years now,” says
Mr Cowhig.
“For us it’s the quality of the machines, the reliability and the
back-up that we get from ECI JCB here in Cork.”
In the last decade he has seen some changes in machine design,
30
“Even if we haven’t called the dealer, we regularly get calls from
James Pengilley at Greenshields to check that everything is okay
and to ensure that there aren’t any issues.”
Johnson runs a completely JCB fleet of equipment, that includes
16 mini excavators from the 8016 to the 8080. The firm also
uses larger JS models and its compaction equipment bears the
JCB Vibromax logo.
“We have really noticed that with each model the JCB machine
gets better, in fuel usage and the performance of the machine,”
says Mr Lynch.
By supplying machines internally Johnson can keep a tight
control on service and maintenance work, which results in very
few problems on the fleet. This fact has become increasingly
important during the downturn, as the company has chosen to
run machines longer to get the best return on its investment.
“We have an internal fitter who looks after the machines, but
also use Greenshields JCB for machine diagnostic systems.
“Resale value is based on the customer looking after the
machine. If the machine is well looked after then the residual
value will be okay.”
with reduced and zero tailswing becoming increasingly popular
in the mini and midi excavator markets. JCB’s continual
development of its mini range has also not gone unnoticed.
“The machines have been getting more productive over the years.
The zero tailswing models are much better for us too, better for
work on site and there is less damage,” says Mr Cowhig.
Ease of operation is a major factor in his decision to stick with
JCB, though he believes that the yellow machines are by far the
most popular in the west of Ireland.
“There is never a problem with customers with a JCB. It is the
name around here, other manufacturers haven’t really taken off
in this area at all,” he says.
The machines are also easy to look after, as serviceability,
especially within a zero tailswing upper structure, was one
of the main design criteria.
“We look after all of our machines ourselves. We can always get
spare parts from ECI, and if they haven’t got something in stock
then we’ll have it the next morning,” says Mr Cowhig.
“We tend to keep our machines for three years and we always
get good residual values.”

Mervyn Lambert Plant
Plant hire is driven by customer demand. When the call comes
for equipment, a hire company has to be ready to supply.
“Availability is a big concern for us,” says James Lambert,
Director of leading East Anglian hire firm Mervyn Lambert Plant.
With the recent upgrades to JCB’s Compact Equipment
manufacturing facility in Cheadle, offering greater production
flexibility, improved machine quality and the ability to react to
rapidly increasing demand, Watling JCB is well placed to meet
changing hire fleet requirements.
“The price is always competitive with JCB and the level of
back-up from Watling JCB is very good, but it has been machine
supply that’s been very important,” says Mr Lambert.
The company has a large fleet, available on an operated or selfdrive basis. It includes more than 80 mini and midi excavators,
from micros to JCB’s 8 tonne 8080 models.
“There has certainly been growth in both 5 and 8 tonne demand
over the last few years, and this has been a very good year for
us,” says Mr Lambert.
32
That growth has been driven by the machine’s high performance
though, rather than by the latest zero tailswing designs.
“Zero tailsing is a requirement, but not a necessity for us,”
says Mr Lambert. “Only around 20% of our customers would
specifically ask for a zero tailswing machine in this area. What
they need is a machine that can perform.”
Based near Diss, with an outlet in Essex, Lambert is well
placed to serve customers from London to the Midlands.
The company has also supplied equipment to the Olympic
projects in East London.
Working across such a geographical area Lambert has to have
confidence in its machinery, and in the back-up available from
its dealers.
“We have always had good levels of service and parts supply
from Watling JCB,” says Mr Lambert.
“Reliability hasn’t been a problem with the JCBs and we
have had no problems in terms of customer acceptance
with the new models.”
Artisan Hire Centre
Compact plant and tool hire is a demand-driven business, with
fast turnaround times, machine availability and rapid response
all essential to a company’s success. Artisan Hire operates four
hire centres in Swindon, Bristol, Melksham and Chippenham.
Formed in September 2000, the company offers a wide range
of power tools and building equipment, to suit the needs of
contractors within the area. A range that now includes the
latest JCB minis.
“We ran mini excavators from another manufacturer when
we first started up, but we had some problems with them and
there was the issue of transportation, so we sold them a few
years later,” says partner Chris Comer.
“We then started to re-hire mini excavators to meet the needs
of our customers when necessary.”
The company recently found that it was re-hiring 16-20
machines on a regular basis, prompting a move back into the
mini market. Artisan called on local dealer Holt JCB to supply
five machines, a mix of 8014 1.5 tonners and the compact micro
1 tonne machine. Those initial JCBs have proven so popular
that Mr Comer already has his eye on a further three minis.
“It was a really good deal, the whole package from Holt along
with JCB Finance,” says Mr Comber.
“We wanted a recognised product and I like Holt’s attitude to
business. JCB Finance is a really good outfit too.”
He has no intention of going above 1.5 tonnes in weight, as
the compact JCBs provide everything that customers are
asking for and they have been well received. Artisan has found
a lightweight plant delivery vehicle from Andover conversion
specialist KFS that allows a car licence-holder to carry the 1.5
tonne mini excavator with a selection of buckets, yet stay within
the permitted 3.5 tonne gross weight limit.
Mr Comer has a four year plan to build and renew the fleet
going forwards, as the JCB minis will retain strong residual
values over that period.
“Our plan is to run the machines for four years and then rotate
them for new” he says.
“We might end up with 20-25 mini diggers eventually, so by
running them over 4-5 years we will be able to rotate 4-5
machines each year. We may even look at a breaker as part of
our next order.”
Artisan Hire has grown rapidly and four branches will almost
certainly lead to more, as opportunities become available. The
fleet will continue to expand to meet rising demand throughout
the South West.

M&M Contractors
JCB Insurance
There is little doubt that piping a machine to run auxiliary
hydraulics, to power a range of boom mounted attachments,
can increase utilisation and boost productivity. With JCB there
is a second option when it comes to driving breakers and other
work tools.
The hand-held tool circuit (HHTC) can be supplied as an
option with a number of JCB machines, from mini excavators
to backhoe loaders. It allows operatives to run hydraulicallypowered hand tools while the machine is working, greatly
increasing productivity and reducing the need for a second
machine on site.
M&M Contractors is one of Ireland’s utility infrastructure
providers, working for British Telecom, Phoenix Gas, Northern
Ireland Electricity and others. With contracts in telecoms,
gas, water and power supply, M&M has more than 30 years
experience of the utility market.
The Belfast-based firm runs 15 machines, of which half are
JCBs supplied by dealer BC Plant. The latest addition is an 8025
mini, one of the first in Ireland to be equipped with the HHTC
auxiliary supply.
“It’s an excellent machine, really good value for money,” says
Operations Director Gareth Loye.
“We can run the breaker off the machine now, rather than

bringing a separate breaker power pack, it’s much more
productive.”
Working throughout Ireland this offers the company big savings,
as there is no need to tow a compressor or carry a hydraulic
power pack on the truck to each site. It also means that the mini
excavator doesn’t have to stop, change from bucket to breaker
and back as the digging progresses.
M&M provides its clients with a complete support service,
night and day, so the firm’s equipment has to be reliable. The
company needs to be able to rely on the supplying dealer for
back-up on the newer machines, and for spare parts supply on
older models.
“We change our machines after around five years,” says Mr
Loye.
“We look after the older machines ourselves, but call on BC
Plant to take care of the newer mini excavators. They have
always been there for us, no problems at all.
“The JCBs always stand up to the work well.”
Though still new to the job, the 8025 is proving a popular
addition on site, where its digging performance is matched by
the versatility of the HHTC system.
“We would certainly look at it again for other machines in the
future,” says Mr Loye.
company to cover the risk. On larger tender-based plant
supply contracts, it is increasingly common for plant insurance
to remain with the owner of the equipment, not the customer.
A small number of hire companies have taken this risk on
themselves and are actively using ‘hire without the need to
insure’ as a differentiator to win contracts over their competitors.
Recognising the need for a different approach, JCB Insurance
has developed JCB HireMax.
JCB HireMax offers a facility where plant can be hired out, with
a waiver of the requirement to insure, but still be insured by you
at a fixed cost, without risking your entire business’s insurance.
The premium is a fixed percentage of the hire rate with
discounts of up to 50% for plant fitted with security devices
JCB HireMax is a stand alone facility, for plant as opposed
to tools, and is available to hire companies involved with longer
term hire contracts. To take advantage of this facility, you do
not need to appoint JCB Insurance as your broker for all your
other insurances. However JCB HireMax will save you money
because, even if you could get ‘Indemnity to Hirer cover’,
it would cost a substantial additional premium as it materially
alters the profile of your risk.
JCB HireMax will also protect you from the risk placed on
your business of hiring out with ‘Indemnity to Hirer’. It is
available immediately and a regionally based JCB Insurance
territory manager will be happy to visit to discuss further.

Leane’s Tool Hire
Dawkins Group
They say that when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
But perhaps that should read that the tough keep going. There
can be little denying the fact that trading conditions in Ireland
have been difficult, as the economy has struggled and cuts in
public spending have bitten deep.
For a demolition contractor an excavator is not just a machine to
work with a bucket. The development of powered attachments
means that the excavator has rapidly become a highly versatile
multiple tool carrier.
“There is a lot more to a machine these days than just carrying
a bucket on them,” says John Dawkins, owner and Managing
Director of the Luton-based Dawkins Group.
“We’ve got almost every attachment on our JCB machines.”
Dawkins is far more than a demolition contractor. The company
is a construction firm, a groundworks contractor, a drainage
specialist and has a landscaping business. With full order books
Dawkins has recently upgraded much of its fleet, replacing many
of its JCB mini and midi excavators with new models from local
dealer Watling JCB.
Machines include the micro, 8018, 8020, 8030, 8045, 8060 and
the 8080. All of the machines have a very varied working life,
just recently an 8060 was soft-stripping a building with a grapple,
prior to demolition, while another machine on the site was being
used with a patch planer in the building’s car park.
For a plant and tool hire company serving the construction
industry, it has certainly not been a time for heavy spending. It
is more a time for making the most of the equipment that you
have, and increasing the return on your existing investment.
Leane’s Tool Hire, in Killarney, County Kerry runs 15 mini
excavators from 1-5 tonnes in operating weight. The majority
of those machines are JCBs, purchased through local dealer
ECI JCB.
“The machines are very good and the back-up from ECI is really
good,” says company owner Richard Leane.
36
The company supplies compact plant and tools for hire or sale
in a 50 mile radius of Killarney. Traditionally Mr Leane would
look to change machines on a four year cycle, but in some cases
that might now be extended to get the most from the machines.
That being the case he will be relying on ECI to continue
to provide a class-leading back-up and spare parts service.
“When needed the back-up from ECI is very good,” says
Mr Leane.
“They have always been very good to us.”
As the construction sector starts to recover, and demand picks
up once again, Leane will be well placed to make the most of any
opportunity. The company has continued to serve customers
throughout the area with reliable, productive machinery such
as the JCB mini excavators.
“The first machine I had was a JCB and I had that for 10 years,
so I have stayed with them,” he says.
“We’ve never had any major problems. Any minor faults have
been rectified by Watling JCB. I’m over the moon with Watling
as they always put things right.”
Though much of the firm’s work is within Bedfordshire and
Hertfordshire it has been working further afield to satisfy
demand. The company has also bucked the general trend
through the downturn and finds itself with bulging order books.
“We are flat out busy at the moment,” says Mr Dawkins.
“There is work out there, you just have to find it.”
He also believes that having a modern, up to date fleet helps
when it comes to gaining new work, while the latest machines
offer improved performance and increased productivity.
“We’ve seen a 100% improvement over the years with JCB,
the new machines are very good,” he says.

THE WORKS
Burke Groundworks
Durability, availability and reliability are key features of all JCB
machines. However any equipment manufacturer will admit
that occasionally machines break down. The important thing for
the customer, is how the dealer and the manufacturer react to
that breakdown.
David Burke, of Northern Ireland contractor Burke
Groundworks, has been a JCB customer for many years, and
over that time has built a strong relationship with local dealer
BC Plant. When he recently had a concern with a JCB mini
excavator the dealer was quick to come to his aide.
“I have had JCB machines for 28 years now,” he says.
Burke Groundworks is involved in housing and road preparation
works and runs a number of larger JCB excavators on its fleet.
The 8035 has been purchased for its combination of compact
dimensions and large excavator performance, which make it the
perfect machine for some of Burke’s contracts.
“It’s specifically for road crossing work, when you have to cut off
half of the road to work,” says Mr Burke.
Cutler Brothers
“But you still need the reach and performance of a large machine
and it has to be capable of filling an eight-wheeled tipper.
The 8035 is the ideal machine for the job.”
As well as its zero tailswing (ZTS) design, the 8035 has a
2,330mm boom with a 1,525mm dipper arm. This combination
provides a maximum digging depth of 3,512mm with a dump
height of 3,482mm.
“It really is a very good machine,” says Mr Burke.
Burke relies on BC Plant for the majority of its machine
maintenance. “They have a very good mechanic who looks
after my machines and there has never been a problem with the
availability of spares,” says Mr Burke.
“They always look after me when we need service or
maintenance of the JCB machines.”
The level of service and back-up provided should be exactly the
same for a mini excavator as it is for a much larger prime mover.
By keeping close to the customer, reacting quickly to rectify any
concerns and by ensuring that the machine is up and running as
soon as possible, BC Plant has ensured that Burke Groundworks
remains a dedicated JCB customer.
Machine performance can be a major buying criteria for large
earthmoving equipment. It is also an important consideration
for many buyers of compact machinery. Cutler Brothers,
of Woodlands in Dorset, is well aware of the productivity
required of its larger kit. The company’s machines are used in
general contracting, demolition, groundwork and landscaping.
All 10 machines on the fleet are from JCB, with recent
additions including an 8016 mini, an 8030 and an 8065 which
has recently replaced an 8060. This latest midi is on a long term
pipeline project with a local council. The 8065 is a reduced
tailswing design that offers increased performance, improved
bucket and dipper arm tearout forces when compared to the
8060, something that has been noticed on site.
“They are a really good machine,” says Managing Director
Roger Cutler.
With machines going out to work with the firm’s own
operators and on self-drive hire, it is important that drivers
are familiar with the controls and that they can get the best
from the machine. By opting for JCB he is confident of a high
38
degree of operator acceptance and has few complaints from
the cab. “We’ve used them on sites where other companies
are working with other makes of machines,” he says.
“They can’t believe the power of the JCB excavators and how
well they perform in comparison to their own kit. There’s just
no competition.”
Cutler likes to keep its machines up to date, to ensure that it
offers the best performance possible to customers. With that
in mind the firm replaces all of its equipment after three years,
to keep downtime to a minimum and boost utilisation.
“We get a very good residual for the JCBs,” says Mr Cutler.
“They hold really good money and there is never
a problem with disposal.”
The company has an excellent working relationship with
Holt JCB and working throughout Hampshire, Dorset and
Wiltshire will call on the dealer when required for rapid backup on site.
“Holt JCB are very good for us,” he says. “When we have had
any problems they have always sorted it out straight away.”

D&K Plant Hire
Any company that has seen its plant fleet increase in size over
the last four years must be doing something right, but to grow
by 300% is a major achievement. Newcastle upon Tyne firm
D&K Plant Hire has one of the most modern JCB fleets in the
North East, with 38 machines supplied by local dealer Scot JCB.
“We decided to buy JCB machines because of the service and
the attitude of JCB and Scot JCB, the positive feedback from
customers and because the machines are made in England,” says
Plant Manager Paul Moyes.
The fleet includes nine compact excavators, including the 8018, 8025,
8030ZTS and 8040 minis and the 8055ZTS, 8065RTS and 8085ZTS
midi machines. Customers can specify the machines with trained
operators or on a self-drive hire basis to meet their requirements.
With a wide customer base, including major blue chip contractors
and local authorities, the company works within a 100 mile
radius of its Newcastle base. All of the machines can be supplied
with breakers and come with twin lock quick couplers to comply
with Health and Safety best practise.
“It’s a case of what you need, when you need it,” says Mr Moyes.
“We are 100% focussed on client satisfaction and ensuring
that our loyal customer base gets the best levels of service our
industry can offer.”
With that in mind D&K expects the same level of service from
its own suppliers, which is one of the reasons for its strong
relationship with Scot JCB.
“We find the service from Scot is very good,” says Mr Moyes.
“We service and maintain our own machinery and call on Scot
to handle some of the maintenance work when required. Spare
parts supply is also excellent. ”
To maintain high levels of customer service D&K has a policy
of changing its machines after a maximum of three years. This
ensures that customers get the benefit of the latest models with
features such as zero and reduced tailswing.
“Performance is an important consideration for our customers,
even with smaller machines like the minis and midis,” says
Mr Moyes.
“That is one of the reasons that we like the JCB models,
the response from our customers to the machines has been
very positive.”

Blakedown Landscapes
JCB’s policy of continuous development ensures that machines
offer more power, lifting and digging ability, while using less
fuel, with reduced emissions and lower operating costs. JCB
has many loyal customers, who have built their business using
JCB equipment. It is these companies that have worked with
different generations of machine who notice the constant
upgrading that takes place.
“There has definitely been improvement. We’ve been buying
JCB machines for 26 years and the development in fuel
economy, reduced noise and increased
performance has been very
noticeable,”
says
Steve
Buckingham,
Managing
Director of Surrey firm
42
Blakedown Landscapes (SE).
“We have been very pleased with the improvements.”
Blakedown Landscapes is part of the Worcestershire-based
Blakedown Group, which also incorporates specialist sports
field business Blakedown Sport and Play. The landscaping
division is involved in soft and hard landscaping works,
environmental improvements, grounds maintenance and
related civil engineering projects.
The focus at Blakedown is on a ‘concept to completion’ service,
allowing clients to deal with one contractor for all aspects of
the project, from groundworks to specialist surfacing and
ongoing maintenance.
The company runs 28 excavators in total,
including 17 mini and midi excavator models.
Around 80% are JCB, including 801, 802, 8025 and 8030ZTS
models. Most of the mini focus is at the smaller end, with six
1.5-1.8 tonne machines, plus a number of 2.5 and 3 tonne
excavators.
“Flexibility is a priority for us,” says Mr Buckingham.
“We buy JCB for the reliability, and the price is well pitched
within the market. The dealer network is responsive for spares,
back-up and service if we need it.
“Greenshields JCB are very good to deal with, which makes life
easy if we get an issue with a machine. Their depot is also very
close which makes it easy to get parts.”
Given that the machines are not constantly used in the heaviest
of digging conditions, Blakedown has no fixed replacement
policy. However with the latest models the firm has been taking
an increasing number of ZTS zero tailswing models.
“It is quite an important development for us as we work in some
tight areas,” says Mr Buckingham.
“The machines have retained their versatility though. We use
augers for fence holes and planting pits on the 1.5 and 3 tonne
machines. We also have breakers for every machine.”

Hire2K
Boyle Construction
Irish rental specialist Hire2K has opted to provide more machine
for your money, by running no less than 51 of JCB’s 8030ZTS
minis on its fleet. Where some hire firms are content to send
a 2.8 tonne machine when customers ask for a 3 tonner, the
8030ZTS offers far greater performance and productivity.
“You are always better off going up in size rather than coming
down,” says company founder Rory O’Connor.
“People like the performance that the 8030 provides. They
look good, they’re very powerful and the zero tailswing design
means that there is less chance of damage.”
Hire2K was established in 2001 by Mr O’Connor, who has more
than 20 years of plant hire experience. With premises both to
the north and south of Dublin, the company’s machinery works
throughout Ireland.
As well as being specialists in generator hire and power
provision, Hire2K runs a large fleet with more than 80 mini and
midi excavators. The 8030s are not the only minis, as Hire2K has
a growing number of 1.5 tonne 8018 machines and models from
800kg to 8 tonnes.
Where possible all of the company’s excavators are specified
with full cabs, providing a high degree of comfort for customers.
All are piped for powered attachments, increasing their
versatility and boosting utilisation across the fleet.
“A lot of our customers ask for the JCB machines by name, for
the power that they provide and the comfort in the cab,” says
Mr O’Connor.
“If you are working in a machine for eight hours then you need
to be comfortable to get the most out of it.”
Another reason for opting to go with JCB is the strong resale value
of the yellow excavators. Hire2K trades or sells its excavators
after three years, and Mr O’Connor reports strong interest in the
JCB equipment with consistently high residual values.
“We service and look after all of our equipment ourselves, and
we get good resale values,” says Mr O’Connor.
“The service from ECI is excellent, always very good,” says
Mr O’Connor.
By offering that bit more than the competition, Hire2K provides
market-leading levels of customer service. With JCB’s 8030ZTS,
the company’s customers can be sure that they are getting the
most productive machine in its class.
Health and safety, and quality assurance, are at the heart of
every project for Boyle Construction. Established in 1984,
by Eugene and Donal Boyle, the firm has grown to become one
of the leading building contractors in the North West of Ireland.
Based in Letterkenny, County Donegal, Boyle is involved in
commercial, industrial and residential work.
With such a focus on quality and safety, it comes as no surprise
to find that the firm’s plant fleet is mainly made up of JCB
equipment. Loadall telehandlers and JS130 crawler excavators
will be found on most of the firm’s sites, along with two 3 tonne
JCB minis.
The firm has run an 803 for some time, recently adding the latest
8030ZTS model to the fleet. This zero tailswing machine offers
increased safety, thanks to smaller rear overhangs and improved
visibility to the working area.
“We’ve had JCB machines for the last 25 years, we started out
with JCB,” says Eugene Boyle.
44
“We have always been very satisfied with the performance of the
machines. The zero tailswing design certainly has its advantages
on site, and it’s a nicer machine to drive.”
The 8030 has proven a popular size of machine, its compact
dimensions allowing it to operate in confined spaces, yet still
having the power to perform.
“We have the 3 tonne models as they are very versatile,” says
Mr Boyle.
“When we operate with a hydraulic hammer they still have a lot
of power for a smaller machine.”
All of the JCB equipment is supplied through Northern Ireland
dealer BC Plant, and the company carries out all of the service
work while the machines are under warranty. “Spare parts have
always been easy to get from BC Plant and they look after the
machines at first, but given the distance we find it easier to carry
on with maintenance ourselves once the machines are out of
warranty,’ says Mr Boyle.

Leicester City Council
Most excavators lead a varied life and on many different
jobsites. A mini excavator employed by the Bereavement
Services Department of Leicester City Council however, has to
master just the one task, creating uniform holes in the council’s
four cemeteries.
The department runs a fleet of JCB equipment, purchased
through local dealer Watling JCB. Assistant Bereavement
Services Manager Steve Smith and his team assessed a wide
range of machines, and opted for the JCB after in-depth trials.
“My background in the 70s was as a hand digger of graves,” says
Mr Smith.
“So we went on a fact-finding mission and visited a few
manufacturers and dealers, but JCB came out on top.”
Despite the fact that JCB builds a dedicated 8018 Gravemaster
model, with a longer than normal dipper, Leicester opted for
the larger 8025 machines, for their additional digging power and
still longer reach.
“In wet weather you need something with a bit more power and
we need to have seven and a half foot of reach,” says Mr Smith.
“I looked at the Gravemaster, but we ended up going for the
8025 to be on top of the job.”
Watling JCB has provided back-up for the machines in their first
year, but the council’s own workshops will take over for the rest
of their seven year operating life. However the dealer doesn’t
just provide parts and service.
“Watling JCB came and gave us all a competency course on the
machines,” says Mr Smith.
Watling JCB also answered a very specific request.
“The one thing that we really liked is a bit odd. For some reason
the majority of our grave diggers are left-handed, which can
make it difficult to drive a right-handed machine,” he says.
“But Watling JCB had a look and the levers have been swapped
around to suit our left-handed grave diggers. Now we are really
happy with their performance.”

David Wall & Co
For a groundworks contractor, digging ability is the number one
criteria when buying equipment. Reliability, durability, value for
money and ease of maintenance may all be part of the equation,
but the need to move muck has to be at the top of the list.
Dublin groundworks firm David Wall & Co has been in the business
since 1991, and knows exactly what it requires from its equipment
fleet. The firm runs a JS200 and a number of JZ140 and JS130
crawler excavators on sites throughout the greater Dublin area.
“I really like the bigger JCB machines, they perform well for us,”
says Managing Director David Wall.
The smallest JCB on the fleet is an 8 tonne 8080ZTS. This
compact midi excavator boasts the comfort and space of the
larger JS cab, with performance to match, in a reduced tailswing
design that is both compact and stable.
“It is performing fine, no problems at all,” says Mr Wall.
Working mainly in commercial developments, the company has
KLT Construction
more than 30 staff at present and an order book that is providing
a steady flow of work.
The 8080 offers a winning combination of large machine digging
ability with compact dimensions and reduced running costs,
which fits in well with current work trends. With the ability
to dig and load road tippers, yet small enough to operate in
confined site conditions, the 8080 is a versatile machine.
As with the heavier JCBs on the fleet, the midi excavator has
been supplied by Irish dealer ECI JCB.
“We call on ECI for all of our service work and we never have
any problems with them,” says Mr Wall.
Indeed he has built a strong relationship with the dealer over the
last 20 years. The first class level of service back-up provided
by ECI JCB ensures that customer machines like David Wall’s
8080 keep working, and that repairs are carried out quickly and
efficiently when required.
Barnet-based KLT Construction specialises in a core business
of gas main replacement contracting. JCB mini excavators,
supplied by local dealer Greenshields JCB, play an important
role, with the 1.5 tonne 8018 the excavator of choice for most
gas main activities.
Greenshields JCB has supported the company since it started
more than 20 years ago, providing reliable back-up. With more
than 50 machines on the fleet, that service is highly valued.
The firm has been buying larger models of late too, including
the 8030 and 8045, along with the 6 tonne 8060. These
heavier excavators have been called upon as KLT has increased
its workload in larger diameter and medium pressure gas
main replacement.
“JCB diggers are more reliable and more robust with each
generation,” says Plant Manager Chris Cain.
“The JCB excavators are so hardy we can keep them running
efficiently. We have one 8017 that is almost 10 years old.
48
We change machines as and when required. But we’ve been
continually buying new plant as the company has grown.”
Traditionally the company has worked across North and West
London, renewing more than 500,000m of gas main and 45,000
gas services in the last five years. Though looking after its own
machinery, KLT has built a strong relationship with Greenshields
JCB, which is one of the main reasons for its loyalty to the brand.
“It’s the reliability and the fact that we have a real rapport with
Greenshields JCB,” says Mr Cain.
“We get a parts delivery twice a week, or more if required, and
we have a very good relationship with Greenshields. We do have
our own workshops with four mechanics and we do all our own
servicing unless it’s a really big job or warranty work, then we
will call on Greenshields.”
“KLT Construction is confident despite the current economic
uncertainty, and we look forward to our continued partnership
with Greenshields and JCB,” says Managing Director Robert
Taylor.

Active Plant Hire
Sustainability, continuous development and a reduced carbon
footprint are essential considerations for many contractors.
Environmental concerns are at the top of the list on an increasing
number of projects.
This focus on corporate environmental responsibility extends
to the contractor’s own suppliers, including hire companies.
A business that can prove its own focus on efficiency and
sustainability will win an increasing amount of work. That has
been the experience at Active Plant Hire. Based in Upminster,
the company has been in business since 2005.
“We specialise in operated excavator hire, though we do have
a range of support machinery available. We also provide a lot of
tipper hire,” says Business Development Manager Mark Scutt.
The company is moving rapidly across to the latest JCB models.
The firm has recently added two 3 tonne 8025 ZTS mini
excavators and two 8 tonne 8085 ZTS midi machines to its fleet.
“It was the specification of the machines that led us to JCB,”
says Mr Scutt.
“We’ve always had Hitachis in the past, but I was talking with
major contractors who are very much into sustainability and we
realised that we needed to focus on efficiency too. We spoke
Northern Ireland Electricity
to a number of manufacturers, looking at CO2 outputs and
fuel consumption and JCB came out on top. JCB continues
to run a programme of development that aims to reduce fuel
consumption on its machines.
“Having the latest JCB excavators has allowed us to sell
ourselves as well,” says Mr Scutt.
The machines have to perform and the JCB excavators
have excelled, proving popular with customers and with
Active’s own operators. This is important for the company
as even the mini and midi machines are hired with skilled
CPCS-accredited drivers.
“We have some really good operators and they have welcomed
the move to JCB. We supply good guys, but they are only as
good as the machine that we supply with them,” says Mr Scutt.
Though supported by local dealer Greenshields JCB, Active
looks after its own fleet of equipment. “We are just starting to
establish a programme of fleet renewal, though none of our
machines are old yet,” says Mr Scutt.
“But we don’t want the fleet to fall behind. Some of our
customers are looking for an annual reduction in CO2 output.
JCB’s continual development will help us to achieve that.”
Providing service on a national level can stretch the largest
organisation. It can be better to use local contractors to provide
a rapid response, rather than directing your own resources far
from base. That is the approach at Northern Ireland Electricity,
for most of the country.
NIE is a provider of the overhead lines and underground cable
infrastructure that delivers electricity. If there is a problem,
NIE’s fault and emergency division has a network of contractors
across the country that it can call upon to put things right.
However, in the firm’s home city of Belfast, the division handles
all cabling problems itself.
Fault and Emergency Manager Kevin McDowell has two teams
of jointing engineers available 24/7 to handle underground cable
faults. Each team of engineers has a fully equipped truck, with
a JCB 8014 on board.
“The 8014s have been customised for our use with the addition
of a hand-held tool circuit (HHTC) so there is no need for
a second machine to run breakers and asphalt saws,” says
Mr McDowell.
50
“They are very compact machines with virtually no overhang at
the back. That is very good from our point of view as we can get
into very confined spaces in the city,” says Mr McDowell.
If the mini is too large, the team can use hand-held tools to get
the job done with power from the machine. The tool circuit
is used to run low vibration asphalt saws to cut through the
wearing course of the road, making reinstatement easier and
speeding up the repair.
“From a safety point of view our teams are specially trained and
we can dig down on top of a potential fault. Using hand held
tools makes the job that much easier,” says Mr McDowell
“The machines do exactly what I want them to do,” says
Mr McDowell.
“We are very pleased with BC Plant. They look after the
machines for us totally, and we need to rely on good back-up.
The teams are on the road all day, every day and I aim to get five
years of use out of the machines.”

The most recent change in JCB’s compact excavator boom
design has proven very popular with one of the Midlands’ leading
builders’ merchants. For Carvers (Wolverhampton) it was the
feature that attracted the company to the JCB 8014 in the first
place, a decision that has already been rewarded by an increase
in demand for the firm’s excavators.
“We were running a small fleet of competitive machines, but
we used to have regular pipework damage on the boom, which
resulted in charges to the customer,” says Operations Director
Brian Purslow.
“The big advantage of the JCB is the round boom, with the
hoses encased inside. Secondly we find that the JCB is better
known and accepted in the building industry, which has resulted
in more hire.”
Carvers was established more than 110 years ago as a builders’
merchant. The company has grown in the intervening years,
now employing more than 200 staff across the West Midlands. It
is heavily involved in timber frame manufacture and a leader in
specialist timber construction.
“We started a hire centre in 1998, offering power tools and
small plant,” says Mr Purslow.

“We tend to get about eight years of life out of the mini
excavators, so the dealer has to be able to offer a good level of
service. We’ve used JCB before with the telehandler and always
found Gunn JCB to be very speedy with their response times,”
he says.
“Also their representative Mark Robinson is really switched
on and he always gets things done when he says he will.
I’m really pleased with Gunn JCB, and Mark is a real asset to
the company.”
While performance is an important consideration for Carvers,
reliability and durability are equally vital. However being able
to supply equipment that the customer is happy to operate is
essential.
“JCB was not the cheapest, but it was the boom that we really
liked,” he says.
“The JCB name really stands out and the customers like the
boom too, as they don’t risk a charge for damaged hydraulic
hoses. When our regular customers come in now they are
asking for the JCBs specifically.”
