JCB Power Systems NEXT HOME 10 years of innovation excellence PREVIOUS It was an idea from our Chairman that would prove to be the defining moment. What plans are in the pipeline? Has there been any defining moment with the project? The backing of a world-class brand, the commitment of significant resources and the freedom to think differently are factors that, when combined, have made JCB Power Systems into the major success story that it is today. You joined JCB five years before the engine was launched. What did those five years entail? A streamlined diesel vehicle was commissioned by Lord Bamford to attempt to set a new We’ve been focusing on working with diesel land speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats in the USA. Working with a small in-house team and external consultants we began a development programme that involved machine engine customers, as well as Mr JCB, founder and current JCB Chairman, Lord Bamford. As our product ideas began to develop we further invested in our test and development equipment so so we could test prototypes rigorously and efficiently to ensure that Once the final and monumental decision was made to go into production we initiated a search to find a suitable site for a new factory to be equipped with the latest assembly legislation so that - in true JCB style – line processes and equipment. we will be first to the market with Following five years of research and development, the first JCB Dieselmax engine was the best solution. previewed at Bauma 2004. We interviewed Alan to find out more about his role in the success of the engine; NEXT How has engine technology changed over the decade? Emissions legislation has been the key driver for change since we’ve been manufacturing engines. However we knew about forthcoming changes when we set out, we’ve been able to modify our offer without radically changing the footprint of the engine. This has had major designs to accommodate new engines. What is your proudest achievement? Sugar cane farming requires a large supply of water and the logistics of running water through big bore pipes around a vast property is a huge task. Paul’s farm is set up to run hose irrigators which are fed by dams and sumps located along the drains on the farm. Paul really needed a portable pump featuring a hard hose or winch which could be taken to the water source and hooked up to the hose irrigators. So, he set about designing his own solution in conjuction with a local engineering company putting reliability and economy top of his design criteria. “With the unit left to run unattended, often for 16 hours at a time, I had to be sure that the unit I was buying was reliable so I asked my local water agent who recommended the JCB engine. Rated at 89kW at 2200 rpm and featuring high torque at low speeds he assured me it was one of the finest engines in its class on the market. It also has a market-leading warranty policy so I have complete peace of mind and it is both quiet and efficient. We specified the engine protection from our Dealer Power Equipment, which gives us essential engine safeguards and features an external emergency stop button for added safety.” The JCB Pump Buggy’ comprises a skid style base, dual axles with industrial tyres, hinged drawbar and a canopy for protection. The JCB engine is direct-coupled to a centrifugal pump which has the capacity to pump up to 300 litres of water per second. HOME Harvesting sugar cane in South Africa Matriarch Equipment is a family owned OEM located in Richards Bay, South Africa. With innovation and customer needs at the heart of the new product development process, the company designs and manufactures machinery for key target markets, including sugar cane. Their products are all simply designed, well-engineered and very durable. The Matriarch UltECO5 sugar cane slew loader, launched in 2013, is a highly efficient 5.9 tonne machine designed specifically for African operating conditions. Featuring a low centre of gravity and wide track width the machine has been designed to handle slopes previously rendered un-workable for sugar cane slew loaders. At the heart of the machine is a naturally aspirated mechanical JCB Dieselmax engine. Offering maximum torque at low rpm, this machine has an average loading rate of 50 tonnes per hour. When engine revs are kept at 1200 rpm the machine, under normal working conditions, has an average fuel consumption of just 3.5 litres per hour meaning lower operating costs. Ashley Bell is Sales Director for Matriarch; “Since the successful field trials of our machine we now have over 20 units working in sugar cane plantations in sub- Sarahan Africa and we anticipate building another 15-20 units during 2015. We specify high quality componentry to ensure the reliability and durability of our products and the engine is a key part of our procurement strategy. Prior to specifying the JCB engine we visited the factory in the UK; which was very impressive and we then conducted intensive evaluations to ensure they were a perfect fit for our machine. We particularly like that the JCB engine is modern, yet simple in its design, which means it is easy to service and maintain. The high peak torque of the engine at very low revs is a feature that contributes to the overall efficiency of our machine - our customers really appreciate the fantastic fuel consumption. Working with our JCB distributor in South Africa we have now started to specify JCB engines in a number of our other forestry and sugar cane handling machines.” PREVIOUS NEXT HOME PREVIOUS NEXT Working together on Tier 4 Final Our partnership with world-class and is being evaluated by renowned and knowledge to help us modify our own manufacturer of street cleansing sweeping contractor, William Hamilton. equipment.
