How has engine technology changed over the decade?
Emissions legislation has been the key driver for change since we’ve been manufacturing
engines. However we knew about forthcoming changes when we set out, we’ve been able
to modify our offer without radically changing the footprint of the engine. This has had major

Harvesting sugar cane
in South Africa
Matriarch Equipment is a family owned OEM located in Richards Bay, South Africa. With
innovation and customer needs at the heart of the new product development process,
the company designs and manufactures machinery for key target markets, including
sugar cane. Their products are all simply designed, well-engineered and very durable.
The Matriarch UltECO5 sugar cane slew loader, launched in 2013, is a highly efficient
5.9 tonne machine designed specifically for African operating conditions. Featuring a
low centre of gravity and wide track width the machine has been designed to handle
slopes previously rendered un-workable for sugar cane slew loaders.
At the heart of the machine is a naturally aspirated mechanical JCB Dieselmax engine.
Offering maximum torque at low rpm, this machine has an average loading rate of 50
tonnes per hour. When engine revs are kept at 1200 rpm the machine, under normal
working conditions, has an average fuel consumption of just 3.5 litres per hour meaning
lower operating costs.
Ashley Bell is Sales Director for Matriarch;
“Since the successful field trials of our machine we now have over 20 units working in
sugar cane plantations in sub- Sarahan Africa and we anticipate building another 15-20
units during 2015. We specify high quality componentry to ensure the reliability and
durability of our products and the engine is a key part of our procurement strategy.
Prior to specifying the JCB engine we visited the factory in the UK; which was very
impressive and we then conducted intensive evaluations to ensure they were a perfect
fit for our machine. We particularly like that the JCB engine is modern, yet simple
in its design, which means it is easy to service and maintain. The high peak torque of
the engine at very low revs is a feature that contributes to the overall efficiency of our
machine - our customers really appreciate the fantastic fuel consumption. Working with
our JCB distributor in South Africa we have now started to specify JCB engines in a
number of our other forestry and sugar cane handling machines.”

JCB Power Systems has an engine

Magni Telehandlers.
Magni’s founder, Riccardo Magni,
specified the EcoMAX Tier 4 Interim

company has long term plans to produce
up to 1,000 machines a year from its
new 6,000m² production facilities in
Castelfranco Emilia, near Modena.
It was the innovative approach to engine
development that inspired the Italian
entrepreneur to work with JCB –
a company that he believes shares his
own ethos of innovation.
“JCB’s innovative approach to Tier 4

real world fuel saving benefits to my

change to Tier 4 Final engines those
benefits will become even greater.

Forward thinking approach to parts delivery
Our customers have told us how important it is for parts to be available on demand. That’s why all our dealers carry extensive
stocks of the most popular items, backed up by the JCB World Parts Centre in the UK - which carries huge stocks of all spares at all
times. As you would expect from a world-class engine business, we are able to benefit from JCB’s investment in its parts operations
which includes European and American Parts Centres and a host of satellite parts warehouses in Dubai, Moscow, Prague, Brazil,
India, Singapore and Shanghai. The most recent facility opened last year in Chicago boasting 130,000 ft² of parts stock. Further
facilities are planned in Africa, Latin America and North America.
and practical training including full strip, rebuild, advanced diagnostics and self- servicing procedures.
To bring all these operations together we have invested in a Control Tower System which searches for the closest warehouse to
the customer to supply the part requested. In the unusual event of non-availability then the system always looks to the next closest
parts centre for stock – ensuring the most efficient and timely flow of parts.
Every single parts order is placed via our SAP portal which ensures complete traceability and provides us with statistics that can be
analysed for further improvements and efficiencies.
