Valkeakoski
city's vision
”Valkeakoski is a growing
residential and business city
that offers sophisticated
know-how and provides
high-quality services.”
Lush Cultural and Sports City
Located in the heart of the Häme province, where lakes Mallasvesi
and Vanajavesi come together, Valkeakoski is known for its
• beautiful natural surroundings
• central location
• competitive, international industry and commerce

Our patron animal is the
osprey, or “sääksi” in Finnish.
The city combines a modern, well-kept industrial centre and the
ancient rural centre of Sääksmäki, a significant place in Finnish
cultural history. There are several ways to experience Valkeakoski – enjoy the urban environment or the peace and quiet of the
countryside!
Our long and rich history has given the basis for many of our
tourist attractions. The best known of these are the Visavuori
museum, the Voipaala art centre and the historic Rapola ridge
in Sääksmäki, and the Myllysaari museum complex in the city
centre. The city also boasts an exceptional variety of sports and
cultural activities and events. Accommodation and other services are readily available to suit various tastes and needs.

CITY OF BRIDGES
Embraced by Two Lakes
Water dominates the silhouette of Valkeakoski: more than a quarter of the surface area of the city, approximately 100 km2, is covered by water. Lake Mallasvesi in the northern part of the city
flows through Valkeakoski canal into Lake Vanajavesi. Picturesque suspension bridges over the water connect the neighbourhoods to each other.
Valkeakoski
Canal
The 495-metre
user-operated canal,
situated in the heart
of the city, is one of
the busiest in Finland.
Enjoy Our Natural Harbours
and the Activity on Our Lakeshores!
Boaters can select from several route options from our 250 kilometres of waterways. You can head for Hämeenlinna in the south,
Tampere in the north, or you can take the eastern route towards
Hauho or via Kangasala all the way to Längelmäki.
There are several islands suitable for hiking in the Valkeakoski region. You can go ashore for example on Huhtasaari and Riuttasaari islands in Lake Mallasvesi. It is possible to make a fire and
set up a tent on many of the islands. A picturesque water route
flows through the park-like centre of Valkeakoski.

SIGHTS
”When I got tired of the
cultural high society of Helsinki,
I decided to move here and
get an honest, respectable job.”
Composer, professor Kari Rydman
has lived in Sääksmäki,
Valkeakoski, for more
than thirty years. His
great-great-grandfather
was the rural police
chief of Sääksmäki.
Kari Rydman:
WELCOME
to a National Landscape!
When arriving in Valkeakoski, pay attention to
the water! Long ago, in ancient times, the influential parish of Sääksmäki was born on the shores of
these lakes, rivers, rapids and waterways. Valkeakoski is the daughter of that parish, and its factories still use the power of these waters.
Next, climb to the top of Rapola ridge! From
the top, you will have a view of the national
landscape of Lake Vanajavesi with its islands
and their fruitful fields. You will also be standing on a rampart of the greatest ancient hill fort
in the Nordic area. It guaranteed safety when
conquerors from the east or the west were
threatening the homeland of Häme.
The city centre is definitely worth visiting.
The canal and the factories tell a story of the era
of industrialization, while old and new neighbourhoods have spread around the factories, often by water, the lifeblood of the city.

Near the centre you can also find the buildings
dedicated to leisure, hobbies, culture and health:
the library, our education centres, the swimming
hall, the theatre, schools, the hospital – and between them the lush lakeside swimming areas
and boat harbours.
Reserve plenty of time and visit the medieval
Sääksmäki church, Voipaala and the other
manor houses, the beautiful and intriguing
Visavuori museum. And if it happens to be
Whitsun in May, experience the most unique
tradition of the city, the young maidens’ procession at the Helka Fest in Ritvala village.
If you are in a hurry and just passing by, take a
moment and stop at the bridge in Sääksmäki.
You will be able to see at a glance what we are
really all about.
And, when driving by, do not be alarmed by the
roar from the direction of the factories. It is just
FC Haka playing, and they’ve just scored a goal!
”Considering its past and present,
Valkeakoski is a city much larger than its
size”, says composer, professor Kari Rydman.

Relics and
Cultural Heritage
Sääksmäki, the mother parish of Valkeakoski,
was inhabited in the prehistoric era, as early as
5 000 years ago. The first written documents
which mention the Sääksmäki parish date back
to 1340. The parish covered the entire Western
Häme region from the Middle Ages until the
end of the 19th century.

Rapola Ridge
The Rapola Ridge, situated in Sääksmäki, a
junction of the ancient waterways in Häme, is
one of the most valued cultural sites in Finland.
In addition to the remnants of Finland’s largest
ancient hill fort, built some thousand years ago,
the area boasts remnants of prehistoric dwellings, cemeteries, sacrificial stones and an ancient grain field. There are official guided paths
through the hill fort, beginning at the car park
of Voipaala manor.
Rapola Manor
The Rapola manor dates back to
the 17th century. A statue of a lion
in front of the manor commemorates the third president of Finland, Pehr-Evind Svinhufvud,
who was born here in1861.
The Päivölä Folk High School, on the site of the
medieval Solberga manor, houses the Mannerheim Collection which portrays the life and
family of the Marshal of Finland, C.G.E. Mannerheim. Also portrayed are the Knights of the
Mannerheim Cross, the men who received the
highest wartime honour in Finland during
World War II.
The Tradition Room displays wartime material collected by the Valkeakoski-Sääksmäki
War Veterans Association: hobby crafts, military uniforms, letters, photos, medals and picture postcards.

Art and Humour
The Visavuori museum complex on the shore of Lake
Vanajavesi, near the Sääksmäki
bridge, consists of the Emil
Wikström Museum and the
Kari Pavilion. Visavuori can
be easily reached by both land
and water – for instance by a
Finnish Silver Line boat from
Tampere or Hämeenlinna.
Emil Wikström Museum
VISAVUORI
Visavuori was originally sculptor Emil Wikström’s (1864–1942)
home and atelier. Today the museum displays his works along with
the lifestyle and living environment of his era. Wikström created
several nationally important monuments such as the statues of
Elias Lönnrot, the creator of the national epic Kalevala, and J.V.
Snellman, one of the most important Finnish thinkers of the 19th
century. One of the most admired facades in Helsinki, the old senate building, as well as the Lantern Bearers, statues at the Helsinki
Central Railway Station, are also his handiwork.

The castle-like atelier, built between1903 and 1912, houses about
one hundred of Wikström’s sculptures. There is also a winter garden, an organ and an observatory. The residence, completed in
1902, is a log castle built in the national romantic style typical of
Finnish artists’ homes in that era.

MYLLYSAARI
A Journey
from Prehistoric to Modern Times
The geographical position of Valkeakoski in the junction of two
waterways has determined much of the city’s evolution. In the
Middle Ages Valkeakoski was a widely known mill village where
people gathered from long distances by boats to grind their grain.
Since the 1870s Valkeakoski has been known for paper and paper
manufacturers. Today, several prominent international companies
operate in Valkeakoski.
The old factory building by the canal at Myllysaari, the birthplace
of industrial activity in Valkeakoski, hosts two museums in a historical industrial environment: Valkeakoski City Museum and
the Finnish Football Museum.
The Workers’ Music Festival will be held in the industrial milieu
of Myllysaari on 29 July –1 August. See page 24!

Mill Village, the establishment of the paper mill as well as the
post-war growth period. A model illustrates the industrial village as it was in 1923. You can also get an idea of the importance of Juuso Walden, the legendary patron of the paper mill,
in “Juuso’s Room”.
Finnish Football Museum
More than 100 years of Finnish football
history is displayed here in the form of
objects and pictures, garments, prizes
and souvenirs. Among other things, a

Kauppilanmäki
Open-air Museum
The Kauppilanmäki open-air
museum is situated a few hundred metres to the south of the

that illustrate the way paper
mill workers lived from the
late 19th century to the early
20th century. The area also
houses a Workers’ Hall, a
smoke sauna, a carriage shed
and storage houses. Various
events and performances are
arranged on the premises on

Actress Sari Siikander’s roots are in Valkeakoski. For her, Valkeakoski is precisely the kind of strawberry patch it is marketed as:
a sympathetic small town with the benefits of a bigger city.
As a factory town surrounded by water Valkeakoski is
visually impressive, Siikander says. “Nature is not just

LIVING
Mika Kallio:
VALKEAKOSKI IS MY FIRST CHOICE
Monaco-based professional motorcycle racer Mika Kallio still considers
Valkeakoski as his real home town. This is why he decided to build his
own strawberry patch here. It is situated in Lintula, the site of the Finnish
Housing Fair in 2009.
Kallio, who tours the world professionally, enjoys life in the garden city.
“During the season I have very little free time, but I try to
make time to come back to my home town whenever possible.”
Valkeakoski has always been the number
one choice for Kallio. This is where he was
born and raised. ”I would not even consider
building my Finnish home anywhere else.
The location of the city is excellent, because
both Tampere and Helsinki are only a short distance away. All the necessary services are readily available. This is a great place to relax and charge up between races.”

Seppo “Sedu” Koskinen, a Valkeakoski native, played in the Haka
football team that won both the Finnish Championship and the
Finnish Cup in 1977. Today, he is the principal owner of FC Haka
and a significant restaurant owner in this city as well as in many
others.
Around the time Sedu was born and lived here as a child, the legendary mill owner Juuso Walden was in his prime. The strong
man of United Paper Mills Ltd created a strong basis for the varied leisure possibilities in the city. ”Juuso was a football man from
head to toe, but he understood culture as well. Among other
things, he was a cofounder of the city’s theatre. Juuso believed in
providing good leisure possibilities for the workers in his factory
and all the residents of the city”, Sedu explains.

Apia Park. A versatile and beautiful leisure oasis in
the heart of the city: Adventure park, swimming area

Valkeakoski – a Diamond
in the Rough
The visibility of the widely reaching waterways
everywhere is characteristic of Valkeakoski. Nature is nearby and can be approached in many
ways. “Back when public attention was turned
to the factories and their smell, this remained
undiscovered by many. Now that the odours
have disappeared, everyone should be able to
see the beauty of the city. The Housing Fair
event last summer opened many visitors’ eyes
in this respect”, Sedu believes.
Tehtaan kenttä Football Field.
Haka football matches serve great entertainment and
experiences. The Paviljonki restaurant serves other treats.
According to Sedu, Valkeakoski has great potential for tourism and the possibilities are almost limitless. Sedu wants to actively participate
in developing the city as an interesting and attractive destination.
