Science Open House: We all love the hands-on nature of science at Palm Valley! From the SmartLab to robotics, egg drops off the top of the gym to forensic science in Biology class, our students have fun participating in our science curriculum. Come play and learn with us! On Sunday, January 31 from 1:00-4:00 pm, we will feature active science exploration all over campus for Preschoolers through Upper Schoolers. This event is open to the public, so bring your friends and neighbors as well! News from the Upper School: *Senior Spotlight: Max Mulé Max Mulé has been attending Palm Valley School since he was three years old. He is active in Outdoor Club and hopes to attend UC Berkeley. Who is your favorite character from history, real or imagined? Jeanne de Clisson AKA the Lioness of Brittany. She was a Breton woman born in 1300, who upon her husband’s unjust execution sold their estates, bought 3 ships, and became a privateer in order to avenge him. She patrolled the English Channel for French ships, specifically those belonging to nobles, and would attack them on sight and kill most of the crew, personally beheading the nobles with an axe and sending the rest back to France to spread the word. What is your favorite meal? Gnocchi. Specifically with tomato sauce and meatballs. Max (second on the left) on a hike with the Outdoor Club at the Bump ‘N’ Grind Trail. For what fault do you have the most toleration? Forgetfulness. I’m a very forgetful person myself. What trait do you admire most in a friend? Humility. Or just genuineness. What is a natural talent you wish you had? I wish I were better at math. What is your idea of happiness? Misery? I’d be pretty happy living on the beach in a place with dark, overcast skies and cold weather. But not cold enough for snow. As for misery, the idea of having a desk job in a corporate office building frightens me. Favorite school memory? Probably when I played Jesus in the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee when I was in 9th grade. What is your ideal occupation? I want to be a linguist and aid in the preservation and revival efforts of the world’s endangered and dying languages, particularly the ones indigenous to the Americas. * Page 5 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * (760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org Every year in high school has its own personality. So common is the letdown of the second year of anything, that there's a plethora of sayings that characterize it. The sophomore slump, the sophomore jinx, the sophomore jitters. In the UK they call it "second year blues". In Australia it's called, "second year syndrome". What is the explanation for such a downturn in student feelings about school? Lemons and Richmond (1987) define this phenomenon as a “period of developmental confusion” and suggest that the “sophomore slump results from students’ struggles with achieving competence, desiring autonomy, establishing identity, and developing purpose.” During the freshmen year, students are excited about being in high school (or college). They are learning new systems and procedures. They are busy adapting to new demands and meeting new friends and teachers. By sophomore year, even though these activities continue, the sheen of newness has worn off and students sometimes struggle to maintain their "joie de vive". By junior year, many students have found their niche. They are established in clubs, activities and sports that they enjoy, they feel confident about their abilities, both academic and social, and most of all, they are starting to look forward to learning about, and applying to college. Renowned center and NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon never picked up a basketball until he was 15 years old. Pharrell Williams, famous music producer and performer, found his passion for music in high school. Many well-known celebrities and politicians got their starts in student government, including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt, who were all their schools’ ASB President. Exposure to new activities can introduce students to skills and talents they never knew they possessed, and provide valuable experiences that will benefit them in college and adulthood. Page 6 The best antidote to the sophomore slump is encouragement. Fear is a big part of the sophomore slump. Fear of failure, fear of embarrassment, fear of the unknown. A student cannot truly appreciate the joy of success if they have never faced adversity. Remind your student that failure IS an option! Encourage your student to participate in activities, clubs and sports that the School has to offer. Our job as partners in this School community is to provide a safe place for students to have the opportunity to learn and grow. Fight the Sophomore Slump! Winterim starts Monday, Feb. 1. Students have received their schedules via email. Winterim follows the regular school schedule and students should be at school during regular hours next week. Students will receive additional information regarding their specific classes from the instructors of those classes. See Ms. Steinman or your class instructors with questions. Congratulations to Freshman Jackson Dean. He represented PVS well and gracefully at the county Poetry Out Loud competition last Saturday in Riverside. Pictured are Jackson and Coach Sarkis plotting their strategy. Students interested in participating in this year's Lions Club Student Speakers Contest need to have speeches in to Ms. Zachik by Thursday, February 4th. The topic this year is "Liberty and Justice for All"--What Does it Mean to You? At the local Club Level Competition the winner receives $100. Each (760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org finalist receives $25. District winners receive a scholarship of $4,500 (Remember Cam Hookey was awarded this?). Area winners receive $11,000. And, the final winner receives $21,000! The contest is open to grades 9-12. This is a 5-10 minute speech. At the Club Level, speeches may be read. News from College Counseling: During Winterim, students will have the opportunity to take an ACT/SAT prep course. Deadline is February 7. In 500-800 words, answer the following question: The Founders believed in the sanctity/ vital importance of the individual liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. To what extent (or in what ways) has our government compromised on these liberties in the name of security or the general welfare? In your answer, incorporate the principles and specific examples (including current events) that support your conclusion. The Italian Catholic Federation is offering a scholarship for students who are Roman Catholic and of Italian ancestry. Students must have a 3.2 GPA. Application is due March 15 and available at www.icf.org. If you have not done so, please “like” the Palm Valley School Alumni Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/ palmvalleyalumni/?fref=ts News from the Middle School: This past week Señora Huerta's 8th grade Spanish students participated in a simulation of an Emergency Room where patients, nurses, and doctors conversed in Spanish and conducted routine ER visits. Symptoms were described; tests were administered, and diagnoses determined and prescriptions written. All conversations were in Spanish as the students acted in their assigned roles. What fun to see our students conversing so eloquently in Spanish. Thank you, Señora Huerta, for organizing this activity for our students. Middle School students love to relax and watch movies so it was a fitting Friday Fun activity to end the quarter and semester in PJ's and movie watching on January 29. (760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org Students voted on their choice of movies. The Parent Trap was the favorite choice. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of R&R after our very busy 2nd Quarter and 1st Semester. With the new quarter and semester now in session, students are selecting their elective classes for the new term. We have drama students starting work on this year's Middle School play. We have Robotics engineers, Mathletics minds, musicians, artists, and Literary Magazine producers all working in their selected areas of study. 6th grade students are moving to the next elective in their elective wheel. Talent abounds throughout the hallways and classrooms in Middle School. Speaking of electives, our very own Middle School online literary magazine is ready to publish its second edition. Look for the link to The Flame on the School’s website. Poetry, art and graphic design are all part of the skill set the students in this elective contribute to our community. Thank you to Dr. Tonya Carr for her talent and skill in assisting our students in this creative endeavor. 8th grader Shelby Armor participating in Sra. Huerta’s Spanish ER activity. One final reminder about outer wear inside the buildings and in classrooms: It is much easier to send a student to school in a uniform jacket that can be worn inside hallways and classrooms than to have a student remove outerwear many times during the school day as the building is entered. Solid navy blue, red, white, or gray jackets and all PVS logo jackets are allowed inside. All other versions of outerwear must be removed indoors. Additionally, any jackets and clothing items left at school are hung on the hooks in the courtyards for students to pick up. Remarkably, we have very few lost clothing items. Our students truly respect their belongings, their environment, and their school buildings. Bravo! *Spotlight on Faculty: Tonya Carr If I really think about it, I’ve been “teaching” since I was in Middle School, which is when I first took on the role of tutoring neighborhood kids who were having trouble in school. I knew from an early age that I loved teaching others; I tutored students for 20 years spanning my high school and college years, when I worked in a professional writing center and as a private tutor. I have taught for 10 years in the classroom setting, including courses in media law, speech communication, English Composition, media writing, American history, and English literature. Prior to moving to Rancho Mirage in 2007, I served as an Assistant Professor in the Communications Departments at the University of Idaho, the University of Georgia, and Lenoir-Rhyne University. I could never have earned a Ph.D. if I did not love to learn, and it is this love that motivates me every single day to try and help my students understand the “so what” of what we are doing in class. I love learning — I love showing my students that being a life-long learner is amazing and fun. I love helping young learners to find their way “in” to content that is sometimes really difficult. I always say that I am fortunate to be in a position to learn from my students as they learn from me — the classroom is a dynamic and energizing exchange valve. I was so lucky to have mentors who taught me this fact and who saw something in me — first as a high schooler, and Page 8 (760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org then as a college and graduate student. I try to always remember my important teachers and their encouragement of and faith in me, and I try to pass it on to my students. I came to Palm Valley School in 2008. I learned of the School the way many people in the valley do — I met someone who was a parent, a board member, and a huge supporter. I was fairly new to the Rancho Mirage community at the time, and I was invited to go and observe a high school English lesson with my wonderful colleague Susie Zachik. She allowed me to help guide the discussion with the students, and I so thoroughly enjoyed my experience and the vibe I felt being on campus that I knew I had to be a part of the community if I could. At the time, there was not a teaching position available, but there was a position in marketing and PR as the Admissions Director; that is the role I took on for my first four years at the School, and I am so proud that I helped create our admissions department. vegetables and flowers are in full bloom. You are invited to stop by and see the lettuce, snow peas, basil, and stunning flowers students are growing. Fourth graders arrived bright and early on Thursday, headed to Mission San Juan Capistrano. This field trip is part of their study of California history. This trip is one of the highlights of the school year. Third graders made catapults and launched them last week in science class. It wasn’t hard to fall madly in love with everything we do here at the School. I knew I would bring my own children to the school when they were ready, and I enrolled Ciera (now 2nd grade) and Julian (now 1st grade) when they were old enough to enter Preschool. I am lucky to have experienced the School as a parent in both Preschool and Lower School and as a teacher in Middle and Upper School. My work every day at the School is a labor of love; the people I work with — the students and families and colleagues — are my second family. I feel every day so very lucky to be part of this place. * * * * * * * News from the Lower School: It has been a whirlwind of activity in our neck of the woods! From catapults to snow peas to California Missions, students had many hands-on learning experiences. Kindergarten and second graders did some harvesting in their community gardens. The Page 9 Kindergarteners went on a photo safari in Technology class. They will continue their journey this week as they take pictures for a special green screen movie they are making about the School. Looking ahead, we will have a Lower School pajama and book drive on February 8-12. This is a third grade community service project. They ask you donate a new pair of pajamas (ages infant to 18), and a gently used book. The students will be counting the pajamas, wrapping a book with it, and attaching a note that each class generates in technology class. This is to benefit children in the Coachella Valley. Bring the pajamas and books to your classroom. (760) 328-0861/www.pvs.org News from the Preschool: You should have seen the bounteous harvest of corn, carrots, and radishes from our garden this week. It was time to weed all of the winter plants and start preparing our garden for spring planting. We discover so many new things every time we go to our garden. So many of the children enjoy just washing off the veggies and eating them right then. We would like to thank Kristin Kaminsky for being so helpful in assisting our Quails and Hummingbirds with the hearing screening. Parent volunteers make a huge positive impact on our program. We are so grateful. Ms. Tianna Nuno will be our student teacher in the Coyote class until the end of February. She will be coming to our classroom every morning and will be observing what the children do, as well as, providing four different lessons with our staff. The children have already invited her to join their activities. Gala: On Monday, February 1, we will be announcing the winners of the two free tickets to the Broadway Bound Gala. Be on the lookout for this announcement. The deadline for submitting your ad in the Gala program is on Friday, February 12. Parent Association: All levels are welcome to PVS's first ever COLOR RUN! It is on Saturday, January 30 at our beautiful PVS campus. Registration has begun and is only $25 if you pre-register at the LS, MS or US Front Desk. The first 50 paid registered participants will receive a free pair of cool sunglasses. Medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place as well as Best Costumes! There is also prizes for the Most Spirited Team and 1st Place Team to cross the finish line. We received our December check from the Box Tops for Education™ program and earned $95.60. Way to go! We still need your help clipping and turning in Box Tops. The next submission deadline is March 1. We will receive our last check of the school year in April. Let’s finish the school year strong! We will be sending collection tubs for Box Tops for Education for each family in Preschool and the Lower School, Page 10 only one per family is necessary. Please use the container to collect box tops through the month of February. Turn in what you have collected by February 25. Don’t forget to purchase your Scrip gift cards for all upcoming family events, birthdays and Valentine’s Day! We have a large quantity on hand and can easily order more, if needed. Remember, Scrip will be available for purchase in front of the Lower School the first Friday of the month. You can also print the order form in this Phoenix and drop at the office.
