"We were very proud to have so many Corvette owners on hand to
watch the No. 3 C7.R become the first team and driver combination to
win their class in both the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Sebring 12
Hours in 15 years," Campbell added.
Saturday's win was Magnussen's fourth at Sebring - all with Corvette
Racing. Garcia won for the second time at the event to go along with
his 2009 victory, also with Corvette Racing. Briscoe likewise is now a
two-time Sebring winner.
On the other end of the spectrum, the No. 4 Corvette C7.R of Oliver
Gavin, Tommy Milner and Simon Pagenaud left the race with less than
two hours remaining with a mechanical issue. The trio had challenged
for the class podium in the race's opening half.
After two races in the TUDOR Championship, Chevrolet and Corvette
Racing lead all three point tables. Chevrolet increased its lead in the

SEBRING, Fla. - Corvette Racing won in class for the ninth time at the
63rd Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida as
Ryan Briscoe, Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen added Saturday's
GT Le Mans (GTLM) victory to their Rolex 24 At Daytona win from
January. The trio started the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship
season with consecutive victories and lead in GTLM points after two
rounds.
Garcia won by nearly one minute as the Corvette Racing team played
out its fuel strategy perfectly. Garcia pitted with 54 minutes remaining
and stayed consistent as two cars ahead of him fell into trouble.
Briscoe recovered from a small spin in his opening stints to post his
fastest laps of the race, and quick pit work by the Corvette Racing crew
and a key out lap by Magnussen early in the race gained two positions
during a full-course caution period.
The winning Corvette completed 330 laps for 1,221 miles.
"The win by the No. 3 Corvette C7.R team in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours
of Sebring was a total team effort by everyone at Corvette Racing,"
said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet U.S. Vice President, Performance
Vehicles and Motorsports. "The win was the result of great driving,
quick pit stop by the crew and strong race strategy. Congratulations to
Jan Magnussen, Antonio Garcia and Ryan Briscoe and the team on
winning today.

GAA AUCTION ACTION
Article and Data by Bob Kroupa
Dean Green, President of Greensboro Auto Auction, Inc., once again rolled out the red carpet for all in attendance at the
auction, held March 5-7, 2015.
Over 500 vehicles crossed the auction block representing early 1930's models to a 2015 Ford Mustang. Top sales honors
went to a first-class 1932 Ford Street Rod that sold for $161,000! The sales percentage for the auction was a respectable
67% with a number of sales still pending.
Corvettes were well represented with three being registered in the top ten sales of the auction. First was a 1963 Blue
Resto Mod Coupe with an LS1 motor that sold for $55,500. Close behind was a 1965 Yellow Roadster, 396-425, that sold
at $54,500. Representing the early models was a 1961 Red Roadster, 283-270, that found a new home at $53,500.
See complete results of the GAA Auction in this issue. Then mark your calendar for July 23-25, 2015, the next sale date
of the GAA Auction in Greensboro, NC. Additional GAA information can be found at gaaclassiccars.com.

JIM PLIHCIK reporting.
Auctions America never disappoints with its quality and diversity of cars crossing the auction block. The overall quality of all lots,
including Corvettes, appeared to be higher this year. This year the auction block was relocated to the north end of the building providing
a better flow and overall “auction experience” for this great venue. Attendance was very good and there didn’t seem to be a shortage of
determined bidders. All in all, 37 Corvettes crossed the block with 24 finding new owners, a 65% sell rate. The remarkable cars were
noted in the third generation Midyear and early 70’s along with an outstanding 54, 61 and a 61 custom that sold for 96.8K before
premium. The comparable 61 FI sold for a strong 110K before fees. It was obvious that a great time was had by all, including myself.

CORVETTE EXPO
Bob Kroupa and yours truly reporting
Byron Cooper presented his 38th Anniversary Corvette Expo Show in Sevierville, TN that included his long-standing auction. The
auction was open to all vehicles, however this auction is specially noted for the number of Corvettes that are consigned to cross the
auction block. In fact, thirty-seven Corvettes were represented and accounted for fully 50% of the auction vehicles.
Many of the Vettes were special including a 1963 Roadster that was purchased at Corvette Expo over 30 years ago. Another was a
1995 Polo Green Coupe - absolutely NEW! By 'new' in this case, we mean it had only been driven 319 original miles. It found a new
home with a Dealer at $17,500.
In addition, C5 and early C6 Vettes were in abundance selling from $9,700 to $19,600. See complete results of Corvettes auctioned in
this edition of our Market Letter.
Mark you calendar for October 16-17th for the next Corvette Expo Show and Auction. See you in Sevierville!

be
giving
viewers
of
Velocity’s Americarna show a sneak peak at the 2016
Chevrolet
Camaro
and
the
rumored
midengine Corvette Zora ZR1?
Or is it just wishful thinking?
Americarna host Ray Evernham recently toured GM’s
design facilities with Welburn, the Global Vice President
of Design, and definitely got an eye full of “candy.”
On the show, we get a behind-the-scenes look at the
inner sanctuary of GM design, where art truly meets
science. Welburn tells us that GM was first to use clay to
design cars in the 1920s, and they still do today, only
now computerized equipment helps carve out the rough
design in clay before turning over the fine tuning to
talented designers with their hand-held tools.
We meet Christine Park, Lead Designer, Chevrolet
Design Studio, who reveals to Evernham that she is
currently working on a Chevrolet sports car concept car.
On the computer screens where she is toiling are
images of what could be future Chevrolets that surely
were placed there on purpose by management, wouldn’t
you think?
On her main screen, we see a car that would be a pretty
nice version of the upcoming second generation of the
new 2016 Camaro, and in the background is another
image of a cool looking car that looks to us like it could
well be the mid-engined Corvette rumored for years.
We’re sure Welburn and his team will get a chuckle out
of all this speculation about the images they chose to
display. For all we know, they might just be rejects from
a stack of hundreds. On the other hand, though, could
the designers just be trying to get a clandestine feel for
public sentiment without laying all their cards on the
table?
Only time will tell, but if these images turn out to indeed
be future Chevrolet sports cars, we’d sure like to be first
in line to buy one!
1967 GT Class-Winning Corvette Returns to 2015 Sebring in Gallery of
Legends Display
by BRUCE TROXELL on MARCH 12, 2015
Sebring International Raceway is one of the oldest continuously
operating racetracks in the U.S., holding the country’s first endurance
race way back in 1950. The initial 6-hour race format was expanded to
12 hours in 1952 and now, some 63 years later, it remains as one of
the world’s top sports car endurance races. The latest Twelve Hours of
Sebring begins at 10:40 a.m. on March 21, 2015 when 47 cars will take
the green flag for 12 hours of non-stop, door-to-door racing.
Sebring Gallery of Legends
If you go, not only will you be able to cheer Corvette Racing on to
victory, but you’ll get to see the GT class winner of the 1967 Twelve
Hours of Sebring, the Sunray DX Corvette L88. The Sunray DX
Corvette will be making a special appearance at Sebring’s Gallery of
Legends during race weekend, in the company of such cars as the
1965 winning Chaparral, the 1999 winning BMW LMR, the 2004
winning Penske Porsche RS Spyder P2 and many other great
racecars.
1967 Sunray DX Corvette L88
The Sunray DX Corvette finished first in the over five-liter GT class and
tenth overall, marking a successful debut of Chevrolet’s famed L88
engine in international endurance racing. Driven by Don Yenko and
Dave Morgan, the fire-breathing L88 propelled the coupe to a fastest
lap of 3 minutes and 14 seconds, and proved reliable enough to move
the Corvette up to first from its 24th starting position, completing the 12
hours without any mechanical drama.
Without the special connections of Chevrolet dealer and Corvette racer
Don Yenko, the car may not have made the starting grid. The Sunray
Oil Company consulted Don around the beginning of March in 1967
about their racing plans for the year, which included racing a Corvette.
Don knew of the impending release of the special racing L88 engine,
which was not supposed to happen until after the Sebring race on April
1, 1967. Don made calls to Ed Cole, then Chevrolet Division Manager,
and Zora Duntov, Corvette Chief Engineer, and a new L88 was
hurriedly made available. Co-driver Dave Morgan went to Corvette’s
St. Louis assembly plant and personally drove it back to Yenko

a pampered life. We think that fits anyone’s definition of a legend.

Michelin’s Lee Willard Issues Statement on Cracked C7 Corvette
Tires
by KEITH CORNETT on MARCH 11, 2015
In the three short weeks until Sebring, the coupe was race prepped
including adding a 42-gallon fuel tank and installing one of only 10 sets
of L88 specific headers that were ever made by Chevrolet Engineering.
It helps to have friends in high places!
<b<="" b="" style="padding: 0px; margin: 0px;"></b
We all know now that the L88 was a superlative racing engine, but at
Sebring in 1967 it was untested in actual endurance racing
competition. The L88 was a 427 cu. in. V8 with a mind-bending 12.5:1
compression ratio, an 850 CFM Holley carburetor and cold air
induction. In production trim, it was estimated that the engine produced
between 550 and 570 hp. For racing, the output could be bumped up
to 600+ hp at 6,500 rpm.
Sunray DX Corvette Continues Winning After Sebring
Following the success at Sebring, Dave Morgan campaigned the car
throughout the Midwest and won the SCCA Midwest Division title in
1967. As if that wasn’t enough, the Corvette refused to retire gracefully
when the Sunray DX team moved on to new 1968 Corvettes. At the 24
Hours of Daytona in 1968, Sunray entered two ’68 L88s along with our
’67. Once again, the ’67 finished first in the GT class driven by Dave
Morgan and Jerry Grant. Dave Morgan summed it up best when he
said of the Sunray car, “That was one of the most reliable race cars
I’ve ever driven.”
The ’67 retired from international competition and, as is typical of old
racecars, passed through a series of owners and was actively raced
until 1987 when it was registered for street use for the first time in its
life.
Epilogue
1968 marked the end of Sunray DX racing when Sunray Oil Company
merged with Sun Oil Company at the end of the year.
Noted Corvette and racing enthusiast Richard Prince bought the ’67
racer in 1990 and after substantial research into the car’s history had it
meticulously restored as it was for Sebring in 1967. This year’s Sebring
will be your chance to visit with a racing legend—a Corvette that was
Corvette Forum user “sdtoothdoc” was pretty excited to finally be
receiving his new eight-speed automatic Corvette Z06 last week, but
that excitement has been tempered after he noticed a series cracks on
his high performance Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup 2 tires.
In the C7 Z06 forum, the new Z06 owner posts:
“Hey guys…my A8 Z finally got here in San Diego and took her home a
few miles away. As suspected, all 4 tires have cracks like Dennis’s
from Las Vegas. When at the dealer, they said that 4 other Stingrays
all have the same cracks in the tires. “
Corvette tires aren’t cheap and a new set of the Super Sport Cup 2
tires can go for more than $2,000. And nobody wants to pony up
another $2,000 after just taking delivery of their new sports car. So
what’s going with these tires cracking?
Michelin engineer Lee Willard who is the tire manufacturers’ liaison
with the Corvette engineering team offered the following statement on
the forum:
“This winter has been extremely harsh in much of the country and
some recently shipped Corvette tires may exhibit cracking. In general,
summer tires should never be driven on or moved in temperatures
under 20°F because they may crack. Tires should be carefully
inspected at the dealership before taking delivery of a vehicle. Never
use a tire with freeze cracks, breaks, or damage to the sidewall or
tread. For those residing in colder climates, Corvette owners should
have a plan for vehicle storage during cold winter months. If your
garage drops below 20°F regularly, consider removing tires and storing
them inside. If you live in colder climates and want to drive your vehicle
in temperatures below 40°F we strongly recommend investing in a set
of winter or all-season tires.”
Without weighing into the debate about how smart it was for General
Motors to begin building and shipping their high performance sports
cars equipped with summer tires in the dead of winter, we do know that
many of the Z06s that were recently built ended up sitting outside in
either the plant’s lot or at their secondary storage location in Spring
Hill, TN as the cars underwent their quality checks prior to shipping.
We have spoken with two high volume Corvette dealers, Rick Conti in
Ohio and Mike Furman in Maryland and both have reported not one
instance of cracked tires on any of the Corvettes they have recently
delivered. Mike told us in an email that “I deliver 40 per month and
have 35+ in stock all Winter long and have not had one case of
cracked tires yet.”
So far it appears that the tires on sdtoothdoc’s affected Corvette Z06
will be replaced by the dealer and most likely they will be returned to
GM as a warranty claim.
We don’t expect this to be the last we’ve heard on the situation and
we’ll keep you up to date on any other news related to cracking tires on
the new Corvette.
