Visit the web for the latest in what’s happening in YOUR club. Dear Members, Fiat Lancia Unlimited is fast approaching its 20th anniversary as a car club. Like one of our great Fiat or Lancia cars, what a beloved "vehicle" it has been for the membership. Think of all the wonderful Fiat Freak Outs we have enjoyed over the last two decades and the thousands of Italian cars that have gathered on Freak Out show fields across the eastern USA. There have been countless wine tours, road rallys, and swap meet bargains. FLU members always get great deals on parts, especially at Fiat Freak Outs. Remember that time (OK, just about every time) you talked Bruce Matthews at "The Bin" into an extra discount, or got to meet the helpful Vick Autosport guys in person, or found that unique item from Chris Obert at C. Obert & Co? We have other great sponsors too like International Auto Parts, Bayless Fiat Lancia World and most recently, FAZA in California. Nothing can compare to the countless Fiat friends you've made over the years, simply because once upon a time you decided to fill out that FLU membership form and jumped on board with us. Remember that first Fiat Freak Out road trip? It's been a wonderful ride for Fiat & Lancia freaks. Yet, like a well-used 20 year old Fiat, we started doing a full restoration of the club about one year ago. In the beginning, we made hard choices like raising dues, investing in our Ricambi newsletter and the www.flu.org website. Lot's of components of the club were evaluated, repaired or replaced. Starting with the drive line, we are building a solid base for the future. We will elect four new board members from six candidates, plus re-elect FLU officers. Please see the voting form in this issue. Just like any restoration, we are ready to start doing a little "bodywork." This month we are proud to announce the "FLU Store" for official FLU wearables and FLU collector items. Look for a great selection of embroidered FLU polo shirts, denim shirts, vests, jackets, tote bags, coffee cups and hats. We are using top quality brands like Jonathan Corry, Wrangler, Lee, and Three Rivers. The new items will debut at our FLU booth at the Carlisle Import/kit car weekend. Choose from several colors and styles, and the prices are reasonable! The four-color FLU logo is standard equipment. You may also choose to customize your wares, substituting or adding a second design with a waaay cool Spider silhouette or X 1/9 logo. You can order up to three items for a flat shipping charge (USA orders) of only $5.95 per order. Look for an online ordering page at www.flu.org and in the Ricambi newsletter. Take that classic look of your special Fiat anywhere you go with some new threads to match your car! By the way, if you're still having problems with the heater in your Fiat, no problem! Just order a warm FLU jacket, FLU hat or a genuine four-color stoneware FLU coffee mug! We got you covered! There's some other exciting news coming as our restoration continues. How about old Ricambi issues available on CD Rom or downloadable for a small fee on the Internet? How about audio streaming on the website? Oh yea baby! It's coming. The best Fiat Freak Out ever is right around the corner! Come on, jump aboard and join us July 19th to 21st in Dunkirk, New York. Grab a room now by calling 716-366-8350. As Ferrari wished to continue using its 4-cam V6 "Dino" racing engine (named after Enzo Ferrari's son who died rather young of an illness and had a small role in the engine's development) that it had raced in various displacements in the 50s and 60s, they approached Fiat and asked that Fiat produce a road car around the engine so that over 500 units would be produced. and "Fiat Dino" were intended to be cars in a separate line than the two car makers, known simply as "Dino". However, Fiat wished to cash in on the reputation of Ferrari and its Dino engine to boost its own reputation and released the coupe and spider with Fiat badging, and many Dino 206 and 246 have taken to putting Ferrari logos on their cars though none were originally fitted). The cars featured a 5-speed all-synchromesh transmission, independent front suspension with "live axle" suspension in The biggest change from 2.0 to 2.4 was naturally the engine. The block was changed to cast-iron and thus the liners were eliminated. Yes, the weight of the engine increased, but the performance increase more than made up for this. While the 2.4 weighs 9% more than the 2.0, horsepower is up 12% and torque up a whopping 25% (and comes at lower rpm). The 2.4 is rated at 180 hp DIN (or 188 hp using the modern SAE) and 159 ft. lbs. at 4600 rpm. The transmission was replaced with a stronger unit made by ZF. The shift pattern was changed and follows the traditional Ferrari pattern Reverse top left, 1st is down on bottom left, and the remaining the rear, limited slip differential, disc brakes all around with vacuum servo, 6.5" rims fitted with Michelin 185-14 XAS tires. The early cars were rushed to market, and they were plagued by problems such as plug fouling at city speeds, and in case of the spider, poor overall build quailty for a car of this price. Some of these problems were eliminated later in the 2.0 series, but it wasn't until the 2.4 series came out that the cars really lived up to their heritage. higher gears behing in an H pattern. The reasoning behind this is that a car being driven hard must leave no doubt about the accuracy of changing from 5th to 4th gear, a change that will be made frequently. The pattern also slows the shift from 1st to 2nd. While inhibiting stop light racers, it will prolong the life of the gearbox since the jump from 1st to 2nd ratio is always the largest jump in ratios and care here should be taken anyway. The rear suspension became 1967 Fiat Dino Coupe Fiat solicited designs and chose Pininfarina to design the spider and Bertone the coupe and the cars were released in 1967. These cars sported the 65° V6 Dino in 2.0L displacement with aluminum block and heads, 9-to-1 compression, fed by three downdraught Weber twin-choke carbs, producing 160 hp (DIN) at 7200 rpm, 120 ft./lbs. of torque at 6000 rpm and a top speed of 127 mph. This engine is the same unit used in the "Ferrari" Dino 206. (When the cars were developed, both the "Ferrari Dino" 5 www.flu.org a fully independent system with an anti-roll bar, shock absorbers being reduced from 4 to 2 and heavy-duty RIV components were used. The gas tank was englarged slightly from 66 to 70 litres (about a gallon larger). The clutch was also changed from a hydraulic system to a cable, the radiator was enlarged, the rear brake discs were enlarged to 11.01 inches, front calipers became two pot Girlings (same as on Maserati Ghibli and DeTomaso Pantera), and the brake servo was changed to electric so that if one's car stalled, he would still have brake assist until the beast was brought to a stop. Wheels were the same 6.5 x 14 Chromodoras, but tire width was increased to 205mm from 185mm. Campagnalo 7 or 7.5 inch wheels were available as an option but few buyers made this choice. The interiors were redone as well and though the overall styling of the exterior didn't appear to change much, in reality the cars share few panels. This 2.4 engine in the Fiat Dino is also used in the "Ferrari" Dino 246. This last fact brings much joy to Fiat Dino owners as the high value of the Ferrari model assures that engine parts will be remanufactured for many years to come. 424 2.4 Spyders were built and 2414 2.4 coupes. This means that the Fiat Dino 2.4 cars are actually rarer than the Ferrari 246GT and GTs of which a total of 3761 cars were produced. www.flu.org 6 Cuba - A Gold Mine for the Old Car Enthusiast In February 2002, I joined my wife, Joanne on a Witness for Peace delegation to Cuba and observed a car culture predominated by vehicles from the 1950s. Many foreign cars not often publicized, along with much old American iron was in evidence. Our trip, via Cancun, Mexico, included several days in Havana and a trip to Puerto Esperanza, a fishing and farming community located on the N.W. Coast. For those who might be interested in travel to Cuba, a license from the U.S. sedans, Gaz jeeps, (Russia); ‘49 54 Buicks; two brand new Opels; ‘49 - ‘50 Willys Jeepster; early to mid-50s Eng. Ford Prefect and a slanted rear window ‘59 Anglia. Others to wet ones curiosity were German Fords, Vauxhalls, Renaults (cars, vans, trucks), Citroens, Hillmans, and a Morris Minor. All seen on the trip from the airport around 1 A.M.! school, health clinic, community building projects and several jazz clubs (music is everywhere on the streets of Havana). Politically, we met with the Cuban Foreign Affairs Ministry and the U.S. Interests Section (U.S. Embassy in other countries). A SEAT 600 (licenza FIAT) was parked outside. Traveling to Puerto Esperanza took about four hours, mostly on the Autopista (4-lane highway). The by Terry Ranney visited tobacco farms and a fishing cooperative. Private American yachts are frequently seen at anchor in the bay. It is not illegal for U.S. citizens to visit Cuba; it is illegal to spend money there without a U.S. Treasury license. Umberto, our host and owner of the Retreat Center, was restoring a 124 station wagon with donor parts from a Lada sedan. While there, we saw new pieces of sheet metal arrive for the floor sections. The chief welder said the car would be all restored in two months time! SEAT 600; Spanish built Fiat Descendant of the 500: Fiat 126s are very common Treasury Dept. is necessary. “People to people” educational, religious and family visits are reasons currently being granted a visa. After observing several interesting Soviet era aircraft at the Havana airport, I was overwhelmed by an abundance of traffic from a bygone era. On our way to the Martin Luther King Center where we stayed while in Havana I observed cars such as; Skoda Octavia sedans, wagon (Czech.); Volga, numerous Lada 124, Samara Havana’s main Fiat Agency “Stretch” 124 Berlina Taxi Delegation activities in Havana included a tour of the city on the first day to acquaint us with the city. Many old, elegant Spanish buildings are in a sad state because of the inability to get supplies. Some European, mostly Spanish, restoration and development aid was evident in a number of buildings being used for tourist/resort centers. The United Nations is also funding building restoration on the 8mile water front known as the Melacón. We visited a music last portion of the trip was through the spectacular limestone mountains around Valle Venidos. The hairpin portions of the highway were well paved with an alternate dirt track road for bicycles, pedestrians and animal carts. The delegation traveled aboard a creatively maintained International school bus, originally from the U.S. Many U.S parts and products come into Cuba through Panama and Mexico. In Puerto Esperanza we On the return to Havana we again noticed standardized police vehicles; Polski Fiat 124 sedans and Moto-Guzzi, Italian motorcycles. Later, while attending a Rhumba– AfroCuban music festival–in Old Havana, I observed the owner of a Uno Turbo doing left rear brake work. Driving in Cuba is usually quite slow to preserve the tires and machinery and to avoid even the chance of an accident. Because of the U.S. embargo, vehicles and parts are very hard continued on back page 7 www.flu.org Insurance Basics for Car Collectors part 1 by Dwight Varnes Insurance. Boy, is that a bad word with a lot of people. Most people dread talking about it, and nobody likes paying for it. It is, however, a necessary evil when owning a collectible car. For those of you who don't know me, I am an insurance adjuster. I don't sell it, so I can't make any big sales pitch about a particular company or coverages. What I want to do is discuss things that could affect you when you may actually have a claim. Since I work in the state of Pennsylvania, and am more highly regulated than in many other states, it is possible that not everything mentioned here will be applicable to your circumstance. When in doubt, consult with your agent or a claims rep with your own company. Coverages: it's amazing to us in the field how people can have no idea what product it is they have purchased, and continue to purchase. Here is a brief description of the main coverages on most auto policies: Collision: This is the expensive one. It covers damage that YOU do to your car when YOU run into something. It is the coverage that is most affected by the deductible, which I'll get to. Generally, this covers things that are your fault, but not always. Any time an object collides with your car, it is considered a Collision loss. This includes shopping carts, errant bicyclists and generally any other object that in theory is under human control. Some insurers will make exceptions to this, but most won't. I urge anyone with a car of any value to carry Collision coverage, even on an older car. The reason is, Collision gives you the option to have YOUR insurer do the dirty work of collecting from another party if they are at fault. Any time an insurer pays out on your Collision claim, they are obligated to get back whatever they can of your deductible, along with the money they have paid out. Having a subrogation specialist working on your behalf is a wonderful thing. You, in the meantime, can get your car fixed and get on with your life while the insurer does all the work. This is, after all, a service you have paid for. The deductible is the amount you pay out of your pocket for a loss under this coverage. It is usually paid to the repair shop at the time of work completion. I liken it to paying points on a mortgage; the larger the deductible, the lower your rates. You should only have a deductible in an amount you can easily come up with in a short time, say two weeks. Any more than that and you will likely have a finished car held hostage by a body shop until it is paid! Deductibles essentially show the insurer how much risk you are willing to take along with them that a loss won't occur, and the higher deductibles indicate you are not going to waste their time with small, annoying claims that are more trouble than they are worth. Property damage: this is what pays for damages to other parties property that you have hit or otherwise damaged. It includes cars, fences, lawns and anything else of value. Having a proper PD coverage is important in this age of $50,000 SUVs and high labor costs. One company promotes their 'minimum coverage' insurance, which in my state is $5000. It's about worthless if you hit any one car worth more than that. Guess who they're going to sue for the rest? You! Make sure you're adequately covered. to be continued in next issue www.flu.org 8 by Doug Donovan Yugo Redux ? NEW YORK - A decade has passed since the Yugo was last imported to the United States. The much-ridiculed discount automobile was discontinued in the U.S. in 1992, but has forever remained an American icon of all things cheap. Now, the Yugo is back. Malcolm Bricklin, the American entrepreneur who first imported the Yugo to the U.S. in 1985, says that he has signed a deal with Zastava Motor Works in Serbia to introduce the former Yugo manufacturer's latest product, tentatively dubbed the ZMW. It gets Jaguaresque curves in the hood and will sell for $6,990. We are going to set up 12 distributors across the United States," said Bricklin, 63, who also introduced Subaru to the U.S. in 1968. Bricklin said he expects to import the first ZMWs in 12 months and was confident his new company, to be called Zastava Motor Works USA, could sell 60,000 cars in its first year. He said the 9 www.flu.org cars will come in four different models: a two-door, a fourdoor, a convertible and a pickup truck. Engines, according to Bricklin, will come from a major European carmaker, such as Volkswagen, Fiat or PSA (the maker of Peugeots and Citroens). Prices will range from $5,000 to $10,000, making them the cheapest cars on the market today, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association in McLean, Va. But that doesn't mean buyers don't have other choices. The lowest-priced cars currently sold in the U.S. are Daewoo Motor's Lanos ($9,694), Hyundai Motor's Accent ($9,494), Kia Motors' America's Rio ($9,590) and Toyota Motor's Echo ($10,480). General Motors' Chevrolet Cavalier also falls into that range, with a base price of $14,400 and an available $3,000 rebate. Bricklin said the cars will resemble the Volkswagen Rabbit; will have air bags, to address safety concerns; and the current Zastava cars meet both European emissions and safety standards. For $4,990 the ZMW has ground effects, but it still has the familiar notched back of the original Yugo. The Zastava Motor Works factory was partially destroyed in 1999 during NATO air strikes against Slobodan Milosevic's regime, but was able to continue to make cars that it sold in the former Yugoslavia. Bricklin says the factory has been rebuilt and the company will be able to supply the U.S. market within a year. The only question is: Does the market need a car that cheap? "Coming into the market at that price doesn't necessarily mean there is no competition," said Paul Taylor, chief economist at the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). "[Bricklin] would encounter a very strong used market offering extended warranties." Christopher Cedergren, an analyst at the automotive consulting firm Nextrend of Thousand Oaks, Calif., said the automotive market has moved away from low-priced vehicles. "Consumers want products that evoke passion and emotion, and are willing to extend themselves to get it," Cedergren said. "This will be the first time in the last decade that someone could go out and buy a new car with a new car warranty for half the price of the lowestpriced car out there," Bricklin said. According to the NADA, the average price for a new car is $26,670, while used cars sell for an average of $13,542. Bricklin said he did not have to put up any money to secure the deal with Zastava Motor Works and that he would set up headquarters in New York City. There is no doubt Bricklin is capable of creating the distribution network required to sell the cars in the U.S. He and his former partner set up Subaru of America's distribution network in 1968. Bricklin left the company in 1971, nearly 20 years before Fuji Heavy Industries acquired it. More than 120,000 Yugos sold in the U.S. before he sold out in 1988 for more than $15 million. Bricklin is also well-known for introducing some rather high-profile flops. He designed and financed production of the Bricklin SV-1, a gull-winged car-much like the DeLorean. In 1975, Bricklin Vehicle Corporation, the company that was manufacturing the SV-1, went bankrupt. Bricklin founded the Electric Bicycle Co. in 1995; two years later it also went bankrupt. "Last time we did this, Yugoslavia was imploding, but now it's stabilizing," Bricklin said. "I'm willing to step out there and try things that other people aren't willing to do." For tourists, the government sponsors a car rental network with new Japanese minis: 1000 cc Subarus, Toyotas, Diahatsus and for the rich and famous, Audis! Cuba is a “culture of rides.” People standing beside the roads, not able to use the overloaded public transportation, expect to be picked up. It happens all the time, and we are told, quite safely. A wealth of Italian vehicles are present in Cuba. Club members will be able to recognize many of these: Fiat Regatta, Strada, Brava (old and new), Cinquecento, 600, 1200 Trasformabile, Uno Fiorino, Mirafiori, 1400, 127, Piaggio trike/camion, 128, Autobianchi A 112, 125, 125S, Millecento, Panda, Tipo, 126, Alfa Sud GTCoupe, 33, 164 and 1750 Berlina. The trip to Cuba held many surprises for me, with the positives outweighing the negatives. When it comes to the presence of old autos, no one could disagree with the number that have been preserved as a result of the embargo. On any day in Cuba I was surrounded by a living museum of auto history. I am sure Cuba, a beautiful country with wonderful beaches, mountains, cities and cars, will be a mecca for Americans when the embargo is lifted... even if we didn’t see any 850 or 124 Spiders, OTAS’, or Yugos!
