KEEPING IT COOL
When silage heats it loses valuable nutrients which could have been used
by the cow to produce milk. By applying the right silage inoculant and using
good harvest, storage and feed-out management techniques, you can reduce
heating in your maize silage.
The Pioneer® brand silage inoculant range includes products which are
proven to reduce heating, improve fermentation quality, and deliver more
milk for every tonne of maize ensiled.
Keep your maize cool and put more milk in your vat this season.
Cool Pioneer® Brand Maize
Silage Inoculants
Maize silage contains high levels of starch and sugar. When exposed to the air
at feed-out time yeast and moulds can grow. They use valuable feed nutrients
producing heat and decreasing silage quality.
Pioneer® brand maize silage inoculant adds significant value to your
investment in maize silage. Pioneer maize inoculants improve fermentation,
reduce losses and improve the performance from your silage when fed to
stock. Pioneer maize inoculants are unique because:
Pioneer has a world-class inoculant research
program with patented products. The bacteria used
in Pioneer® brand inoculants are only available from
Pioneer.
Pioneer conducts extensive research at our
Livestock Nutrition Centre in the US.
Pioneer produces crop specific inoculants for
improved results.
Pioneer is ISO 9002 accredited – an external
organisation that audits Pioneer’s processes so
what is claimed to be in the bottle is in the bottle.
Pioneer is an inoculant company that you can trust.
Insist that Pioneer® brand maize inoculant is
applied to your maize silage this season.

representative for more information.
Cool Maize Management
1
Harvest management
– Harvest your crop at 32-40% whole plant drymatter.
– Aim for a maize chop length of 12-14mm.
– Use a plant processor to ensure 99% of all kernels are
cut into quarters.
2
Use Pioneer® BRAND maize inoculant
– Select the best Pioneer maize inoculant for your needs.
– See chart on page 3.
3
Compaction
– Spread into 100-150mm layers.
– Compact until the surface is firm.
4
Sealing
–

5
Feeding out
– Keep the stack or bunker face tight throughout the
feed-out period.
– Remove loose material each day.
Cover stack with a quality plastic cover.
Tape the joins.
Seal the edges.
Ensure tyres are touching one another across the stack.

Pioneer® Maize 11C33
Dual-purpose Inoculant
Pioneer® 11C33 is a dual purpose inoculant that improves fermentation
efficiency and reduces the growth of yeasts and moulds responsible for
heating and silage spoilage at feed-out time. 11C33 contains a unique blend
of proprietary strains of Lactobacillus buchneri, Lactobacillus plantarum and
Enteroccus faecium.

Pioneer® Inoculant 11CFT Corn Fibre Technology
Pioneer® 11CFT is a revolutionary new maize silage specific inoculant that
improves fibre digestibility and reduces the growth of yeasts and moulds
responsible for heating and spoilage at feed-out time. 11CFT contains a novel
patented strain of Lactobacillus buchneri and unique patented strains of
Lactobacillus casei. 11CFT is ideal for farmers aiming to achieve very high per
cow performance.

Not all inoculants are the same
It pays to keep your maize silage cool with Pioneer®
Brand Inoculant.
Recent research work in New Zealand showed that not all inoculants are the
same and in fact some commercial inoculants failed to show any difference
from the untreated. Pioneer® 11C33 was shown to be a very effective
inoculant.
