CEH are asking $5.25 million ($0.35/annual nameplate gallon) for the assets of Vanguard Synfuels, LLC (ww.vanguardsynfuels.com) a fully licensed, 15MMgy, EPA accredited, operating biodiesel plant. The sale requires the buyer to move the plant’s assets from its current location to a site of the buyer’s choosing; however, Vanguard will aid in re-establishing the fully operational plant (the existing Vanguard site is being re-purposed for others). On the site of a former anhydrous ammonia (fertilizer) plant, Vanguard’s biodiesel plant was commissioned in 2005 as a biodiesel plant to run very low FFA oils such as soy and canola. In 2010 bioenergy engineering firm, Jatrodiesel (www.jatrodiesel.com), re-designed and managed the construction of a major plant upgrade allowing the processing of up to 22% FFA oils such as poultry fat, fish oil, yellow grease, used cooking oil and tallows. The work also increased the plant’s annual throughput (nameplate) from 12MMgy to 15MMgy. Jatrodiesel will provide engineering services to design and manage the tear-down, transportation to the new site, and erection of the plant on a turn-key basis. This includes permitting and all engineering and construction required for commissioning the new plant (either as an add-on to an existing plant or a greenfield). Additionally, for approx. $4 million, the plant could be expanded to 30MMgy. 1/7/2015 3 Existing Plant Fully operational biodiesel plant at Pollock, near Alexandria, LA 1/7/2015 4 Existing Plant Plant from the air in 2012 I A J D G B C LEGEND: A: Administrative offices B: Main processing building C: Control & chemistry lab D: Warehouse E: Finished biodiesel F: Rail spur (on theUP) G: 9.2 million gal. tank H: Cooling towers (not used) I: Settling ponds (not used) J: Feedstock tank H E F 1/7/2015 5 Plant Overview Current operations, facilities and logistics 1/7/2015 Fully operational 15 million gallons per year production Continuous process technology (as opposed to batch) Multi-feedstock capability: soy, corn and animals fats, up to 22% FFA. More efficient, better final product Rail access via Vanguard’s two rail spurs off the Union Pacific mainline Plant connected to two industrial natural gas pipelines Distillation column removes methanol from glycerin Water access via Red River port 16 miles from plant. Connects to Gulf and Mississippi River 6 6 Plant Overview Jerome Whiddon, Plant Manager How Vanguard makes its biodiesel . . . (steps 1-6) 1. Feedstock is drawn from storage 2. Removal of moisture and impurities 3. Steam boiler keeps feedstock hot 4. FFA in feedstock is esterified to biodiesel 5. Methanol & catalyst to start reaction 6. Transesterification tanks (continued . . . ) 1/7/2015 7 Plant Overview Jerome Whiddon, Plant Manager How Vanguard makes its biodiesel . . . (steps 7-12) 7. Glycerin is settled out of biodiesel 8. Methanol is removed from glycerin 9. Biodiesel is chilled to remove sterols Feedstock is drawn from storage 10. Partially complete biodiesel storage 1/7/2015 11. Biodiesel stored before final polishing 12. Biodiesel finished product tank 8 8 Operations Overview Plant operations managed from a single control center, 7/24 • The PLC (programmable logic control) is manned by a single operator • Plant runs two 12-hours shifts seven days a week • On night-shift, one operator and a utility man • Day-shift is the same as night plus up to two maintenance personnel • PLC controls all feedstock, chemical and biodiesel processing pump flows, dwell times including temperatures and pressures. 1/7/2015 9 9 Operations Overview Chemistry lab and testing of biodiesel • At right a sample of biodiesel Vanguard typically produces and processed from a blend of used cooking oil and animal fats (called yellow grease or YG) • Below left a sample of #2 diesel fuel. • At right, the same fuel blended with 20% Vanguard biodiesel • All incoming feedstock is tested to meet agreed upon specifications (typically not over 15% FFA or 2% moisture, impurities and unsaponafiable materials • While the PLC controls product flows, temperature and pressure, material in process must be checked manually for meeting correct condition at certain points • Once the biodiesel is finished it is tested to meet the ASTM 6751 specification required by customers and for obtaining government subsidies. 1/7/2015 • 100% #2 diesel • 80% #2 diesel w/20% biodiesel 10 10 Operations Overview Typical Biodiesel Certificates of Analysis 11 1/7/2015 11 Operations Overview Loading for rail cars • Two spurs connecting to the Union Pacific • A total of 33 cars can be berthed at a time • Fast biodiesel loading racks for multiple cars • Designed for off-loading feedstock • Steam injection to cars to ease unloading in winter months for low iodine feedstocks 1/7/2015 Trucks 15 minutes to Interstate • Easy off-loading of trucks to feedstock tank • Micro-motion meter and scales for measuring incoming and outgoing loads • Paved roads throughout plant • Steam injection system for high iodine feedstock unloading 12 12 Marketing Biodiesel marketing and sales • (Left) Darrell Duboc, CEO with Ian Lawson, Sales & Marketing Manager • Almost all biodiesel produced finds a ready market within about 350 miles of the plant • The company sells to distributors who blend the biodiesel to between 5% biodiesel and 95% #2 diesel fuel and 20% biodiesel and 80% #2 diesel fuel • The biodiesel finds its way to retail stations all over Texas and along the Gulf coast • The local market for biodiesel is handled through the port (PAAL) where local distributors can pick up blended biodiesel and deliver to stations in central Louisiana • An increasing number of sales are made to customers using 100% biodiesel. 1/7/2015 Pilot is America’s largest truck stop chain 13 13 Potential Plant Location Site marked in yellow w/rail and water access.
