t has been quite a year of change and challenge
for Special Olympics South Dakota (SOSD). We
want to thank everyone for their wonderful support throughout the year.
We have moved into our new facility. This building will play a big part in our future growth and
will allow us to reach more potential athletes and
their families across South Dakota.
We have many ambitious future goals:
Enhance the 23 annual statewide events.
Expand the Healthy Athlete Program by offer-
ing more free health screenings across more
disciplines.
Expand our Young Athlete Program for children ages 2-7 and their parents.
Conduct a State Winter Games competition.
Grow our Unified Sports program.
We are thrilled with our recent successes, but
more importantly we are excited to get to work on
our future goals. Thank you to the entire state for
your ongoing support!

“Play Unified to Live Unified” because she taught us that on the playing field, we forget about our differences and recognize our mutual humanity. On EKS
Day, we invite you to join us in playing unified and
teaching the world to live unified.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s actions helped open the
minds of all people to the gifts and talents of individuals
with intellectual disabilities. She believed in their possibilities, which fuel hope in all of us to make a difference.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver demonstrated an unrelenting
indomitable spirit in action that one person could make
a difference and change the world. Her lasting legacy
must be our continued commitment to improve and
transform the lives of the 200 million people worldwide
with intellectual disabilities that still live with diminished opportunities and social disrespect, and are often

fter a six year absence, our State Summer Games made a return visit to the
campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish. A record number 581
athletes from 28 delegations were in attendance.
These games featured two days of competition, two dances, Athlete Village, and
three Healthy Athlete Venues.
A huge “THANK YOU” to the community of Spearfish and the over 500 volunteers
who were the driving force behind the success of these games. The hospitality
shown us and energy generated by each and every one of you was awesome.
Let’s do it all again next year!

This was the question posed to all
registered State Summer Games
athletes. The Special Olympics
Healthy Athletes® program affords
us the opportunity to answer this all
important query.
The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® program is designed to help
Special Olympics athletes improve
their health and fitness, leading to enhanced sports
experience and improved well-being.
We are very pleased to have offered Healthy Athlete screenings in three disciplines during our State
Summer Games:
Special Olympics Special Smiles is one of the core
components of the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes initiative, created to focus attention on the
overall health issues facing Special Olympics athletes. The mission of Special Smiles is to increase
access to dental care for Special Olympics athletes,
as well as all people with intellectual disabilities.
The athletes are provided with hygiene education
to help ensure they are doing an adequate job of
brushing and flossing, as well as nutritional education to understand how their diet affects their total
health. During the games, 88 athletes were evaluated.

volunteers for sharing your
precious time and expertise.
FUNfitness is the comprehensive physical therapy
component of the Special Olympics Healthy Ath-
letes initiative. FUNfitness is designed to assess and improve flexibility, functional strength and balance; to educate participants, families and coaches about the importance of flexibility, strength and
balance; and to provide a hands-on
opportunity for participants to learn
about physical therapy. Ninety-five
athletes were assessed during the games.
This was our inaugural Healthy Hearing clinic.
The purpose of Healthy Hearing is to screen the
hearing of athletes and notify athletes and their
coaches if follow-up care is needed. Healthy Hearing venues may also provide corrective (hearing
aids) and preventative (custom swim earplugs)
services where possible, and study the prevalence
of hearing loss in athletes competing in Special
Olympics events. A total of 97 athletes were evaluated during these games.
Athletes who filled their “passport” by attending
all three clinics were rewarded with either a lunch
cooler or a pedometer. A big thank you to our
passport sponsors, Walmart and Avera.

ur 29th annual State Basketball
Tournament was held in Yankton on
March 9th and 10th. Twenty-two delegations comprised of 518 athletes competed
in Team, Unified, Skills, and Cheer.

he 2012 Scarf Project was once again a huge success. For those
who contributed, I would like to extend to you our appreciation
for your efforts. We know each and every scarf was handmade with
love, encouragement and generosity.
This past summer, we set a goal of 900 scarves. When the dust had
finally settled, we had received 1,705 scarves from 38* U.S. States and
31** South Dakota communities!

We have recently received word from Special Olympics North America (SONA) the Scarf Project has been retired. However, a group of
dedicated crafters has taken over the reigns. As we move forward, the
project will have a new name but otherwise will be very similar.

hope you continue with your participation as we move forward.

n 03.07.12, Spread The Word To End The Word activities were held in a
number of South Dakota schools and businesses. A huge thank you to
students from the following schools who took the pledge to stop using the Rword: Brookings, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Hamlin Education Center, Sioux
Falls Lincoln, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Sioux Falls Washington and South Shore Waverly.
A number of Sioux Falls businesses also helped promote the elimination of the
R-word: Rehab Center for the Blind, Avera McKennan, CCC Information Services, SDN Communications, Waterbury Heating and Cooling, Black Hills
Beauty College, Camille’s Sidewalk Café and Citi.
Thank you to the administrators, teachers, students and business owners who
saw the importance of spreading this message of tolerance and acceptance.

LETR Makes A Difference
Law Enforcement Personnel and special guests became the Guardians
of the Flame when the Flame of Hope was lit on Sunday, May 14th
and carried through 23 South Dakota communities. Fifteen Law Enforcement Core Runners and two athlete runners (Chana Sandoval,
Sioux Falls and Tyler Rogge, Belle Fourche), shared their message of
inspiration, gratitude and hope during their many stops along the
way.
The Flame made its way to Spearfish on May 17 and was delivered to
the Opening Ceremony of our State Summer Games.
Our LETR participants work tirelessly to increase public awareness
and to fundraise. In 2011, $461,00 was raised. With a goal of raising
$500,000 this year, they will do almost anything to secure money for
our athletes.
Heroes Behind The Badge
This annual holiday blood drive is a friendly competition between the Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and Sioux Falls Police Department to see who can recruit the most blood donors. Although the cops didn’t win the contest,
$150 was still donated to SOSD. The
real winners, however, are the folks
who receive this invaluable gift of life.
A huge thank you to the Police Department for your on-going support of
SOSD!

The Torch Run began in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief Richard LaMunyon
saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increase awareness of Special Olympics. The
Torch Run has evolved into the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness
vehicle for Special Olympics.
At its most basic level, the Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers and
athletes run the “Flame of Hope” to the Opening Ceremonies of local Special Olympics
competitions, State Games, National, and World Games.
At its most fully developed, the Torch Run initiative encompasses a variety of fundraising vehicles in addition to the Torch Run itself. Our local law enforcement personnel
host multiple fundraising projects each year, including Polar Plunges, T-shirt sales,
Truck Convoys, Tip-A-Cops, and various other zany endeavors.

This was the 6th consecutive year the
students at Axtell Park Middle School have
participated in this contest, raising a record
$2,532 for SOSD.

ver thought to yourself,
“I wish I could get paid
to fish”? Well, your opportunity is here! “Casting For
Cash” was introduced 11
years ago by Oahe, Inc. and
in 2012, went state wide.
“Casting For Cash” involved
tagging 60 walleye and releasing them into the Missouri River. Fifteen tagged
fish each were released into Lewis & Clark Lake, Lake Francis Case, Lake Sharpe,
and Lake Oahe. Tag values are: 7 walleye worth $100, 5 walleye worth $500, 2
walleye worth $1000, and 1 walleye worth $5000. We then selected one of the $100
walleye from one of the four lakes and made that fish our GRAND PRIZE FISH
worth $25,000 in prizes from Scheels in Sioux Falls and Dan O’s Marine in Watertown. Raffle tickets for the event needed to be purchased for anyone trying to
catch a tagged walleye by May 30, 2012. The walleye, then, must be caught between June 1 – August 31, 2012 to eligible for the cash prize.
As of June 12, 2012, two of the tagged walleye have already been caught. Chris
Kisicki from Papillion Nebraska caught a walleye worth $1000 on Lake Sharpe and
Ross Juelfs from Minatare, Nebraska caught a walleye worth $100 on Lake Oahe.
Unfortunately, neither person had purchased a “Casting For Cash” ticket.
It’s too late to purchase a ticket for this year and the fish are being caught, so make
sure you get on our list to purchase a ticket for next year by contacting Todd at
Special Olympics South Dakota at 1-800-585-2114.
Coming this summer is a new LETR fundraiser called “Pigskin Madness”. This fundraiser combines two of our favorite things… NFL football and raising money for Special Olympics South Dakota!

The Athlete Of The Year and the Outstanding Coach Of The Year were recognized at the annual South
Dakota High School Coaches Association awards luncheon held in Aberdeen on July 18, 2012. All
award winners will recognized during the banquet at the State Bowling Tournament in Aberdeen on
November 3, 2012.

LEAP Program
The Special Olympics South Dakota Life Enhancement Assistance Program (LEAP) is an income assistance program. Participants, through their local groups, can qualify for financial assistance for selected events. The program’s goal is to increase participation in SOSD events by helping local groups with expenses
related to their team’s participation.
LEAP support is now being offered at SOSD’s six state events.
Through continued support of our donors, LEAP will expand as
a partnership program with local groups across the state in an
effort to get more participants involved in SOSD’s many beneficial events.
LEAP is a Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) eligible program. If you would like to know more about the LEAP program
from either a donor standpoint or local group support, please

Modern Woodmen Supports SOSD

Kallhoff stirs up the crowd
On March 30, 2012 Modern Woodmen Of America, in partnership with
the Sioux Falls Stampede, hosted their
annual Matching Funds Project. For
the second year the proceeds from the
event were donated to Special Olympics South Dakota (SOSD). The event
included a “Chuck a Puck” competition for which the winner received
two American Airlines tickets.
Northwestern Engergy also got involved by sponsoring a “Shoot for the
Loot” contest.
Including the matching funds from
Modern Woodmen, this event raised
$7,050 for SOSD.

“Hometown Hero Award”
during the festivities

Chris Koenders, an athlete on the Special Olympics Brookings team, was recently recognized as
the Brookings 2012 Friend of Education. This
award is sponsored by the Brookings Education
Association.
For the past two years, Mr. Koenders has spent
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from
8:30am-12:00pm volunteering in Mrs. Gehring’s
2nd grade classroom. The duties that Mr.
Koenders is responsible for includes correcting
and filing papers, stapling book orders, organizing weekly readers and hanging up classroom
projects. Some days Mr. Koenders is responsible
for playing educational games or listening to a
student read. The 2nd graders benefit from the
work of Mr. Koenders and he makes a difference!
