We were relieved to find ourselves, once again, achieving the majority of our single ticket goals. Audiences simply could not get enough of Twyla, Cinderella, Titania, Giselle, and Ariana. Even Nutcracker and subscription sales climbed out of recession lows. On the fundraising front, patrons were extraordinary, while corporations and foundations ensured the ballet had widespread support. Our year ended with a modest surplus and an opportunity to put funds aside for tomorrow. The Vail International Dance Festival welcomed us back to the high altitudes of the Rocky Mountains in July. On our third visit to the festival in six years, we presented exciting and well-received programs of works by Wheeldon, Tharp, Dove, Millepied, Robbins, and Balanchine. In October, a group of 16 dancers boarded the Clipper for Victoria, BC, to present five works in two performances. Back home, our September program offered the return of two PNB favorites, Jardí Tancat and Petite Mort, alongside two new acquisitions: the wacky Sechs Tänze (Six Dances) by Jiri Kylian and Glass Pieces, a pivotal work by Jerome Robbins. An all-Twyla Tharp program reiterated Seattle's fondness for the choreographer's work. We offered fewer performances of Nutcracker this past year and found houses were considerably fuller. Overall, revenue and attendance increased with fewer performances than the prior year. Healthy revenues in our gift shop pointed to an audience moving away from the effects of recession. These audiences wanted more after Clara's adventures were over and came back in droves to revel in Cinderella. Kent Stowell's wondrous production had never been performed on the McCaw Hall stage. Incoming Music Director Emil de Cou led the orchestra with élan through the masterful Prokofiev score. With a single ticket goal of $600,000, we were thrilled to see sales crest at $1,000,000. A fascinating world premiere by Marco Goecke and a strong new work by Alexei Ratmansky were part of a contemporary mixed repertory program in March, with the welcome return of George Balanchine's A Midsummer Night’s Dream in April. 8 If there was one constant throughout the year, it was the reconstruction of Giselle. Work began in the fall and was peppered throughout the year. In January, we presented portions of our staging at the Guggenheim Museum in New York as part of their Works & Process series. For PNB's first production of Giselle, the team of Marian Smith, historical advisor, Doug Fullington, reconstructor of choreography, and myself, stager, offered an interesting new take on the classic story. Accompanying enthusiastic crowds, scores of dance critics visited Seattle to participate in a PNB -hosted national Dance Critics Association conference. Our Company danced with exquisite artistry and true polish. It was an impressive way to close an impressive year. Hours after the final Giselle retreated into her grave, we were back on stage in a celebratory mood. Eight PNB dancers took their final bow on our stage. Their careers ranged from seven years with the company to twenty-four. They are all a part of the fabric of our company and remain an important part of our history. As one generation gives way to the next, some 400 students, accompanied by the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, stormed the stage the following week in the 30th Annual PNB School Performance, followed by eight world premieres in the evening's Next Step. During the past year, we exhibited once again that we are a constantly evolving organization successfully managing changes. We honor the past and we look to the new with equal enthusiasm. We set a clear artistic course and yet recognize that course can only be followed with an awareness of realities of our financial security. No matter what those realities are, we continue to educate, intrigue, and entertain. We look back with pride and turn our attention to an exciting future. Peter Boal Artistic Director “Audiences simply could not get enough of Twyla, Cinderella, Titania, Giselle, and Ariana.” Letter from the Executive Director As the effect of the Great Recession continues to engulf the arts community, Pacific Northwest Ballet continues to strive to maintain its commitment to engaging and retaining as many of its artists as it can while providing high quality dance experiences ranging from performances, to dance education activities for the next generation. PNB has weathered this past year with strong performance both onstage and off. PNB ended the fiscal year in June with a small surplus buoyed by continued success in this season's single ticket sales. That success covered this year's Nutcracker shortfall of $445,000, which was due to the continued effects of the recession on discretionary spending. Along with continued strong support from individuals, but contracted support from state and local governments, and steady support from corporations and foundations, PNB's total revenue continues a five year trend of flat growth. In FY'11, along with signs of an uptick in single ticket sales, we had success with our family-oriented Fairy Tales Package, our fastest growing audience segment. And our Wallace Excellence Initiative has increased our young audiences by 14%, exceeding our goal of a 10% increase. In fundraising, individual giving continues to be an area of expansion. Over the past four years, growth in individual giving has been driven entirely by the success of our New Works Initiative, which seeks large gifts from individual donors to support new additions to the PNB repertoire. For other individual giving campaigns, we have implemented challenge gifts from trustees and others, which work well when used sparingly. We arrived at a balanced budget for FY'12 which relies on popular works such as a full-length Don Quixote, Carmina Burana, and Coppélia, while foregoing some programs of new works with less revenue generating potential. FY'12 includes a reduction in our School faculty and a consolidation of classes, which in some cases, reduces curriculum offerings. PNB has, however, been able to maintain scholarship support for talented young dancers at current levels. In FY'11 we moved opening night to Friday, eliminating Thursday evening as the first performance from all of our productions. Although some of the more popular full lengths can support additional performances, the repertory programs cannot, resulting in a net decline in the total number of performances. With all of these actions, we must still rise to the challenge of raising and earning enough to cover the rising costs associated with our programs, the quality that we strive for, and the number of artists we have historically engaged on an annual basis. We will retain 46 dancers on contract next season (the same as this year) . Consistent with our mission, we continue to strive for highest excellence; we continue to provide our audiences and students with high quality dance experiences; we honor our promises to donors; we seek to manage our affairs with careful planning and prudent decision-making; and perhaps most importantly, we choose to be optimistic. “Pacific Northwest Ballet continues to strive to maintain its commitment to engaging and retaining as many of its artists as it can while providing high quality dance experiences.” D. David Brown Executive Director 9 Letter from the Chairman As your president and chairman, respectively, it is an honor for Joe Norman and me to partner with Peter Boal and David Brown in leading Pacific Northwest Ballet. While the value of strong leadership is not to be underestimated, this past season at PNB has taken a village (or two, or three) to deliver both the artistic and financial results that we are proud to share with you in this annual report. Our village at PNB consists of dancers, musicians, stagehands, costume shop, school instructors, business staff (marketing, box office, development, finance, and human resources), artistic staff (ballet masters, guest stagers and choreographers), parents, our volunteer associations, our boards, our audience, all of our donors, and our leadership team. Every one of these constituents had their oars in the water all year long and helped row us to a successful outcome. The year contained many highs and some lows, but by working together on shared aspirations we ended on a remarkably high note. We should all be very proud of what PNB has accomplished this past year. Our success is wholly dependent upon those who consistently and passionately work for and on behalf of PNB. First, I would like to thank those PNB trustees and major donors who went above and beyond their previous commitments of time and resources this year. These important people and organizations lead by example and inspire the rest of the PNB community to stretch a little further and dig a little deeper. In particular, I would like to specially recognize Peter and Peggy Horvitz, Jeffrey and Susan Brotman, Glenn Kawasaki, Dan and Pam Baty, Carl and Renee Behnke, and two anonymous donors for their incredibly generous efforts this year. Additionally, our institutional support continues to include ArtsFund, The Wallace Foundation, Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, The National Endowment for the Arts, Boeing and Microsoft. I want to particularly acknowledge the bold decisions these major donors have made in stepping forward in continued difficult economic times to support PNB. We are very lucky to count them as friends. Their generous contributions, together with thousands of other gifts to PNB, coupled with year-round box office success during our regular season, produced $20 million of total revenue of which 29% was contributed and 71% earned. Next, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the heroic efforts of PNB staff. Despite several challenges that presented themselves throughout this year, our staff showed an unwavering level of dedication and sacrifice in their continuing support of our mission. It is worthwhile to reflect back on some of our departments' outstanding contributions and achievements during the year. Left: Company dancers in Mark Morris's Pacific. © Angela Sterling Our marketing department and box office staff worked overtime all year long. Every repertory production during this season (with the exception of Nutcracker) over-achieved its revenue goals. Our new Giselle was the most successful June program in PNB history. All in, their efforts resulted in a 4% increase in ticket and subscription revenue, which is our first increase since 2007! As well, PNB received three prestigious “Teeny Awards” from Teen Tix, based on votes from their 27,000 members which is validation that we are successfully meeting the objectives of our Wallace-funded young audience initiative. Through the diligent effort of PNB's development department, individual contributions increased by $248,000 over our prior year due largely to our ability to conduct the Annual Fund matching gift challenge. The value of our in-kind donations increased 10%. Our difficult Nutcracker season, which resulted in a $400,000 negative variance to expectations, required laser-like focus by our board and development staff from January through June allowing us to conclude our year with a modest surplus and a stabilization fund (our cash reserve fund) of $500,000. Such reserves are vitally important to our organization. They allow us to navigate future difficult years. History tells us that such years are certain to come, and while we never know when they will appear or what might cause them, it is important we are prepared as best we can be. In closing, I want to convey how immensely thankful I am to have been PNB's President for five years and now completed my first year as Chairman. To be surrounded by PNB's talented staff and passionate volunteers is a gift and a responsibility our board members take seriously. While the last six years have produced varied financial results in a precarious economy, PNB's artistic results continue to accelerate. Every year, I wonder how Peter Boal will put together another remarkable year of talent and choreography that will continue to increase our appreciation and education for this magical world of ballet. I can assure you that he has accomplished this once again in the upcoming 2011-2012 season during which we will bring to our stage new works, both contemporary and classical, as well as existing audience favorites. It is truly a season of riches! “Every year, I wonder how Peter Boal will put together another remarkable year of talent and choreography that will continue to increase our appreciation and education for this magical world of ballet.” We are excited and grateful to start the coming year from a foundation of financial strength. We will continue to focus our relentless determination on strengthening and building this company and its repertory for our audience and our artists. You are all a vital part of our organization and your passion and support are essential to our success. Aya S. Hamilton Chairman, PNB Board of Trustees 11 Letter from the President In my 30+ years of enjoying Pacific Northwest Ballet performances, I have never been prouder of this great Company than I am today. In good times and bad, these amazing artists continue sharing with us their matchless talent, dedication, and integrity. The result is beauty and wonder beyond dreams. We leave the theater better than we entered, because we have been given something otherworldly that encourages the best parts of us. We all know the arts are stressed in tough economic times, and PNB has been no exception. But it is precisely in such times that our spirits need art the most. We are proud to continue at the highest standard, due to the steadfast commitment of patrons and donors; management that squeezes every dollar; and an abundance of hard work and sacrifices by everyone involved. We thank all who attended and the generous individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies that donated the 30% of expenses not covered by ticket sales. A hallmark of 2010-11 was an amazing anonymous gift, eventually reaching $248,000, which stimulated an increase in the annual contributions of hundreds of other donors totaling the same amount. Our gratitude for such leadership is beyond words. No report on the accomplishments of PNB would be complete without highlighting the two other essential pillars of the organization, namely the School and the community outreach programs. Like the Company, they are both considered among the five best nationally, making PNB one of greater Seattle's most distinguished educational as well as artistic institutions. The rigorous dance training offered to nearly 1,000 select students at the school's Seattle and Bellevue locations is well-known for producing young men and women far more mature, disciplined, and ready for life's challenges than their peers. Moreover, the School is the foundation of the Company; a majority of the Company dancers were trained there in the distinctive and admired PNB style. The careers of most were made possible by generous scholarship donations, without which the School could never attract the most talented students. This year, we are especially grateful for two new endowed scholarships named after the late Dr. Stanley Pier (a gift of his partner and PNB trustee H. David Kaplan) and the late Paula Rose, longtime PNB trustee and friend (given by her family). PNB outreach programs in local schools bring the creativity and excitement of dance to over 17,000 students and teachers annually. Each program culminates in memorable opportunities for students to perform at McCaw Hall. Their quality is illustrated by a rare three successive years of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, increasing in amount each year. PNB was touched and grateful this year to receive its first endowment to support outreach, from the family of our treasured friend, the late Carmen Delo. Generations of children will benefit. Beauty, community, and passion – qualities sometimes missing in today's world – are the heart of Pacific Northwest Ballet. We thank all who enjoy, support, and partner with us. We couldn't do it without you. “Beauty, community, and passion – qualities sometimes missing in today’s world – are the heart of Pacific Northwest Ballet.” Joe G. Norman, Jr. President, Board of Trustees Left: Company dancers in PNB's Giselle. © Angela Sterling 13 Pacific Northwest Ballet raised the curtain for the 2010-2011 season with two notable premieres on Peter Boal's annual mixed bill, in which Seattle audiences are treated to remarkable choreographers of our time. Audiences held spellbound by Jirí Kylián's Petite Mort in 2009 were captivated by its enthusiastic return, followed by his wickedly funny Sechs Tänze (Six Dances). Behind powdered wigs and disembodied gowns, Kylián displayed Mozartian mayhem at its maddest. The second notable PNB premiere, Glass Pieces, brought Jerome Robbins' unrivaled intuition for group dynamics via pedestrian patterns to three compositions by Phillip Glass. Audience favorite Jardí Tancat rounded out the program with Nacho Duato's powerful signature work danced to Catalonian folk tales collected and sung by Maria del Mar Bonet. *SIX DANCES Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Choreography: Jiri Kylian Staging: Roslyn Anderson PETITE MORT Music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Choreography: Jiri Kylian Staging: Roslyn Anderson *GLASS PIECES Music: Philip Glass Choreography: Jerome Robbins Staging: Jean-Pierre Frohlich JARDÍ TANCAT Music: Maria del Mar Bonet Choreography: Nacho Duato Staging: Nathalie Buisson Special thanks to The Boeing Company and Wells Fargo. The program opened with Opus 111, a joyous, folk-influenced ensemble work, followed by Afternoon Ball, Tharp's unwavering take on urban alienation and redemption. Last seen in 2006, Waterbaby Bagatelles swept audiences away with the flirt and flow of blue-capped women and bare-chested men in seven short musical compositions. Of Tharp's exceptional choreography, The New York Times wrote: “Her architectural command of stage space becomes handsomely evident. …the ways in which Ms. Tharp dramatizes space are constantly striking.” The 2008 world premiere of Twyla Tharp's Opus 111 was generously underwritten by Glenn Kawasaki. Former PNB principal dancer and now Ballet Master Paul Gibson's The Piano Dance also returned, set to ten piano pieces from five highly praised composers. After a young peasant girl is seduced and betrayed by a nobleman, she dies of a broken heart and joins the ranks of the Wilis, women scorned before their wedding day and doomed to take their revenge for eternity. PNB's world premiere staging, marked by the use of three original choreographic sources, brought crowds of ballet aficionados to Seattle, including the Dance Critics Association, to marvel in Peter Boal's unearthing of the original choreography. The two-act Romantic ballet swept critics from The New York Times to The Wall Street Journal, each heralding the production's unique transformation of familiar scenes and the inclusion of the original miming sequences. Chiarelli PNB's Nutcracker dazzled Northwest audiences once again this holiday season. The production's brilliant blend of costumes, sets, and choreography is unique to Seattle and creates a magical world enjoyed by children and adults alike. Founding Artistic Director and choreographer Kent Stowell collaborated with acclaimed children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak to create Nutcracker in 1983. Thirty-nine performances graced McCaw Hall, featuring the live magic of the PNB Orchestra and over 200 roles danced by PNB's professional dancers and students. Audiences marveled at the 27-foot mouse king, the splendid growing Christmas tree, the land of snow, and all the magical characters in this special adaptation of a classic story. A fond farewell to and celebration of each dancer's enormous contribution resulted in a house full of loyal patrons. By the night's close, PNB said goodbye to Ariana Lallone, Jeffrey Stanton, Stanko Milov, Olivier Wevers, Chalnessa Eames, Stacy Lowenberg, Josh Spell, and Barry Kerollis. Photos © Angela Sterling Reviving Giselle Over the span of fifteen months, Historical Advisor Marian Smith, Choreography Reconstructor Doug Fullington, and Artistic Director Peter Boal collaborated on a new staging of Giselle, utilizing three primary source documents from the earliest days of the 170-year-old ballet. With this direct link to the origins of Giselle, the team pored over three manuscripts and unveiled a major world premiere, as well as marked the first time an American ballet company revived a classic based on original material. Houston Ballet generously rented sets and costumes from their own production, allowing PNB to lay focus on bringing both the oldest and newest tragedy to our repertory. With immeasurable gratitude to Patty Edwards, Jim & Diana Judson, Ernest & Diane Burgess, Sharon Richardson, Deidra Wager, an anonymous donor, and many others, Giselle was brought to light. Through these programs, over 18,000 students, teachers, and families were reached. DISCOVER DANCE Performance Partnership DISCOVER DANCE, PNB's largest Community Education program, continued to expand in 2010-11. PNB partnered with 10 Seattle and Eastside schools, reaching 738 students and 37 teachers. At each school, one grade-level of students participated in a 3-5 month residency with PNB teaching artists, visited PNB's Phelps Center, attended a matinee of Cinderella, and created their own choreography, all at no cost to students. Seven of the schools performed on stage at one of two DISCOVER DANCE performances at McCaw Hall, alongside repertory excerpts danced by PNB Company dancers, reaching 2,358 attendees. The additional three schools participated in smaller-scale projects, culminating in performances at their schools. In addition, over 50 students worked with visual artist Brent McDonald to create backdrops for the performances, which included live musical accompaniment from the Graham Hill Elementary Chorus, Broadview Thomson K-8 Music Program, and The Seattle Percussion Trio. The 201011 DISCOVER DANCE partner schools were: Arbor Heights Elementary, Broadview Thomson K-8, Daniel Bagley Elementary, Graham Hill Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, Leschi Elementary, Pinehurst K-8, and South Shore K-8 (Seattle Public Schools) as well as Eastgate Elementary and Phantom Lake Elementary (Bellevue School District). EYES ON DANCE PNB's EYES ON DANCE program offered two student matinees in the 2010-11 season. A one-hour performance of Cinderella was held February 11, 2011, and brought 2,709 students to McCaw Hall. This introductory matinee included open set changes, a lighting demonstration, live music by PNB Musicians, and was emceed by PNB School Eastside Principal and former PNB dancer, Nicholas Ade. New for 2010-11, PNB offered a school-day performance of the Family Matinee, Pinocchio, attended by 976 students. The EYES ON DANCE program also offered pre-performance and post-performance in-school workshops for Cinderella, Pinocchio, and Nutcracker, serving 825 students. PNB Fieldtrips In addition to the 19 DISCOVER DANCE classrooms that participated in PNB Fieldtrips, Community Education Programs staff and faculty also conducted PNB Studio Tour Fieldtrips for 21 Seattle area classrooms, serving 505 students, in the 2010-2011 season. During fieldtrips, classrooms of students observed PNB Company dancers in rehearsal, took an introductory dance class, and engaged in discussion about ballet that included an opportunity to see and learn about costumes and pointe shoes up-close. REACH offered two eight-week sessions in different dance styles, and was open to youth between 11- and 15-years old. REACH performed original choreography created by guest artists during the DISCOVER DANCE Community Performances at McCaw Hall on November 13, 2010 and March 26, 2011, with 26 students. Other In-School Projects PNB conducted workshops and residencies at six area schools and centers: Ballard Boys & Girls Club, Our Lady of the Lake Parish School, Pinehurst K-8, Snoqualmie Ridge Early Learning Center, St. George Elementary, and Sweet Pea Preschool West Seattle. Professional Development for Teachers PNB Community Education Programs held professional development workshops and events for 224 classroom teachers in 2010-11, with the aim of providing teachers tools to incorporate dance into their classrooms. PNB also offered preview event tickets for teachers attending the Cinderella matinee, which included an opportunity to speak with Community Education Programs staff and receive free curriculum materials. Other Programming Community Education Programs Coordinator Shannon Barnes participated in Adams Elementary School Arts Career Day to speak about the multitude of careers related to dance (30 students). DISCOVER DANCE students and their families were invited to attend a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream free of charge (331 attendees) and DISCOVER DANCE students created in-school dance performances for their peers (2,200 attendees). Before the performance, guests enjoyed a seated dinner backstage with PNB artistic guests. The performance, Director's Choice, included two new works and two celebrated favorites from PNB's repertoire. Following the performance, guests danced the night away at the onstage party. Sponsored by Ferrari & Maserati of Seattle, The Boeing Company, Plum Creek, Goldman, Sachs & Co., and Puget Sound Energy, First Look 2010 raised $41,000 and was attended by over 300 people. On January 30, 2010, Carla Körbes and her dog, Bella, hosted the eighth annual Winter Wonderland Ball. Over 325 guests enjoyed music, dance classes, delicious food, a silent auction, and appearances by PNB dancers in the beautifully transformed Francia Russell Center. The Ball raised a net of $32,000 for PNB School. PNB's young professionals group, Backstage Pass, hosted their seventh annual Backstage Bash on April 15, 2010. Over 200 guests danced the night away with PNB dancers at Midsummer Mischief, while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and drinks backstage. The third annual School Celebration Dinner on June 18 celebrated the accomplishments of PNB School students and honored their families and scholarship patrons. The reception was attended by 140 students, parents and faculty and raised $6,000 for future PNB School scholarships. Donor Events This year included six opening night dinners, 11 studio rehearsals, and 42 pre-performance and intermission receptions in the donor lounge. The PNB Foundation Board manages our investments to earn income that will generate funds for Pacific Northwest Ballet Association while also increasing the value of the endowment's assets. In the fiscal year 2011, PNB Foundation received $518,312 in new gifts, pledges, and bequests. With these donations, assets under management total $12,564,140 (NOTE: The total of $14,676,540 indicated on the next page includes receivables which cannot be invested until they are paid to PNB Foundation by the donor). This year, the endowment included a 23.7% return on invested funds. This return allowed PNB Foundation to make an extraordinary gift of $758,000 to the Association in fiscal year 2011, demonstrating that PNB Foundation upholds its responsibility to make conscientious financial decisions to provide long-term support to PNB. I want to thank all of our donors for recognizing the importance of building the PNB Endowment. Your generosity allows PNB to create dynamic new works, maintain beloved classics, attract and retain the best artists, and provide high quality dance education and outreach programming to our community. Thank you for your dedication to and belief in Pacific Northwest Ballet. We are deeply grateful for your committed support through the 2010-2011 season. Your generous gifts provide PNB the resources to thrive – from the 2,000 pairs of pointe shoes used each season, to the extraordinary mounting of PNB's reconstruction of Giselle. In addition, our donors help PNB's thriving educational programming reach thousands of young people every year. We salute you for your commitment and support. Corporate Giving During 2011, corporate support totaled $661,545. Corporate gifts are received in several forms, including sponsorships and corporate foundation gifts. Corporations also contributed $544,904 of in-kind gifts of goods and services. Foundation & Government Giving Foundation support in 2011 totaled $431,158. Major foundation donors included Wallace Foundation, The Shubert Foundation, and The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. Government support in 2011 totaled $352,985. Foundation and government contributions are designated toward both specific programs and general operating expenses. Individual Giving During 2010-2011, individual donors contributed $3,552,105 in support to the Annual Fund. Annual Fund contributions support numerous facets of PNB, including: Community Education Programs, DanceChance, general operating fund, New Works Initiative, PNB School, and scholarships. PNB Company dancer during George Balanchine's Diamonds. © Angela Sterling 30 Annual Fund Challenge Pacific Northwest Ballet's 2010-11 season brought numerous artistic successes. While we celebrated ticket revenue overachievement on every program, a revenue shortfall during Nutcracker left a gap of more than $400,000 to fill. With ticket sales covering only 70% of PNB's yearly operating expenses, we turned to our supporters to help bridge the gap with gifts to the annual fund. In spring 2011, a generous PNB supporter anonymously pledged $200,000 to match all new and increased gifts made to PNB by the end of the fiscal year. This generous donor allowed PNB to increase its base of support and to fund important elements of performances. By June 30, PNB not only met but exceeded this goal, resulting in over $248K in increased giving. PNB supporters rose to the challenge, ensuring the vibrant new works and classic ballets will continue to captivate Seattle audiences.
