the Gallery Guide - Chippendale Creative Precinct
ED IT IO N 3 One Central Park, featuring Sea Mirror by Yann Kersalé and Patrick Blanc’s Mur Vegétal Frasers Property and Sekisui House are delighted to support the Chippendale Creative Precinct Chippendale Creative Precinct The Chippendale Creative Precinct (CCP) emerged as a way of harnessing and uniting the overwhelming creative pulse that flows through this lively inner city suburb. Overlooked and skirted around, Chippendale quietly grew into a thriving community of creative agencies, production houses, art galleries, cafes, bars, eateries, architects and designers, alongside three of our greatest universities. In 2010 Nicky Ginsberg, owner of NG Art Gallery realised the endless possibilities that this vibrant enclave of talent had to offer. With her unique vision – to make Chippendale Sydney’s answer to New York’s Chelsea – Ginsberg, as President, and the dedicated members of the CCP board of directors, set out to make it a reality. This irrepressible creativity, the lifeblood of Chippendale, is now shining a light on the positive vision to become Sydney’s next gallery destination. With 16 galleries now in the precinct, its creative revitalisation is well underway. With its humble beginnings, like the suburb itself, the CCP has thrived, matured and is now bursting with possibilities. The Chippendale New World Art Prize and the BEAMS Arts Festival attracting visitors in their thousands are now permanent landmarks on the Sydney Cultural Calendar. The Chippendale Creative Precinct is forever looking forward, to an even brighter future. www.chippendalecreative.com Design by Dane Ash Powerhouse Museum Open: Daily 10am - 5pm Closed Christmas Day Admission: $15 adult, $8 child/concession, $38 family A: 500 Harris Street, Ultimo T: (02) 9217 0111 W: www.powerhousemuseum.com The Powerhouse Museum displays an extraordinary array of treasures across decorative arts and design, science, technology, space, transport and Australian history. ABOVE: Fiona White, Rola Derby, Mixed media on canvas, 2014. What excites about art now? The way art is a mirror to our world, never predictable and always a surprise. As long as it questions and challenges the boundaries of our society, then it has a place within an art historical framework. Where to next for NG Art? To enrich and excite new and existing audiences. Forging new connections both locally and globally is at the forefront of our ethos. Why Chippendale? Chippendale reminds me of pockets of Europe and New York. It is alive, pulsating and sits between three of our greatest universities, the best think tanks in Sydney. We are in the cultural hub of Sydney. Harrington Street Gallery Open: 10am – 4pm except Mondays A: T: E: W: 17 Meagher St, Chippendale (02) 9319 7378 rosscoady@gmail.com www.harringtonstreetgallery.com Harrington Street Artists’ Co-operative Gallery has been exhibiting paintings continuously since 1973, firstly in Sydney’s Rocks area and since 1986 in Chippendale. The artist John Ogburn recognised the need for a gallery to assist developing and established artists to exhibit their best work without commercial constraints. To further guard our freedom to exhibit the best, we have never sought or received government grants and running costs are minimised through the voluntary help given by members and friends. 7 Q&A What excites about art now? In the world of the internet and its mediated imagery, there is a renewed desire for the personalized physicality of real painting. Where to next for Harrington Street Gallery? We will continue as a gallery showing works of quality by both established and emerging artists, run by artists in a spirit of co-operation. Why Chippendale? We seek out emerging creativity that is conceptually compelling, aesthetically arresting and technically exceptional. We want our artists writ large, and have made ourselves porous on a global scale to achieve that end. With gallery spaces in Chippendale, Sydney and Bushwick, New York, we are about accessing all areas and inhabiting liminal spaces and we seek collaboration between niche networks to inspire a meaningful panoptic for cultural enthusiasts. Q&A What excites about art now? There is no one given movement in art right now, it’s completely decentralised, so it can come from and go anywhere. Where to next for CHASM? We’ve just set up in Chippendale, Sydney and we’re about to set up our gallery in Bushwick, New York concurrently as well. We like taking on challenges don’t we?! Why Chippendale?
