We are delighted to
carry on our tradition of
bringing Singaporean and
international writers to
schools as we kick off the
sixth edition of Words
Go Round, the Singapore Writers Festival’s
programme for students, teachers and
the public.
Our line-up of more than 50 Singaporean and
international authors who write across genres
including fiction, poetry, film, theatre and
music will take students from pre-primary to
tertiary levels on an adventure – navigating
the wilderness of cities amidst quiet struggles
and raging wars; discovering heroes and
creating new worlds; exploring culture, family
and identity. Keep an eye out, too, for our
professional development events for teachers.
Programmes include readings and lively
storytelling sessions for younger learners
as well as talks and panels to spark informed
conversations among more mature students.
In addition, our workshops will get students
thinking and sharpen their writing for essays,
exams and beyond, inspire confidence to express
their stories and learn to create their very own
picture books
Beyond the classroom, we are excited to
highlight a collaboration with social collective
Diamonds On The Street, addressing the
challenges faced by at-risk youths; as well as our
programming track at the All In! Young Writers
Festival, in partnership with the National Book
Development Council of Singapore.

About Words Go Round
The Singapore Writers Festival’s
programme for students and
teachers is back! In our sixth
edition, we’re bringing more

workshops by Singaporean and
international writers into schools
just before the first term of the
school year comes to a close.

the basics of typography and the anatomy of type,

wartime without rights to food, shelter or education
may seem impossible. And yet, it remains the way of
life for millions of children, often unnoticed by the
public eye. Join Atia Abawi as she offers a glimpse
of growing up in a time of war through the eyes
of two teenagers in her YA novel, The Secret Sky,
and stories from her time in Afghanistan as CNN’s
former foreign correspondent.
What does it mean to be a strong, independent voice
in your society? And what does your gender have to
do with it? With International Women’s Day in mind,
join performance poet Jennifer Anne Champion and
let your own inner voice go free as you produce a
poem of your very own by the end of this session!

Amallathasan has been writing

diverse as nationhood, nature
and love, and has published

1987 to 2005, and initiated their
annual Thamizhavel Award. In
2005, his song ‘Singapore Enru

What started off as a personal
passion project, is now an

graphic design. Yao Yu spends
his time organising hands-on
creative printing workshops
and gives talks on the history of
the letterpress.

Suraidi Sipan merupakan seorang
bekas guru dengan pengalaman
selama lebih dari 40 tahun.
Beliau pernah bertugas sebagai
penulis pakar di Kementerian
Pendidikan dan penyunting
untuk jurnal Singa dari tahun
1982 hingga tahun 1986. Beliau
adalah penyunting utama untuk
antologi cerpen Kesusasteraan
Melayu berjudul TEKAD (2012),
dan beliau juga menyunting buku
panduan TEKAD untuk guru.
Pada tahun 1978 dan 1983,
Suraidi telah menerima Anugerah
Persuratan untuk sajak-sajaknya
yang berjudul ‘Nyanyi Puisi’
dan ‘Kejujuran adalah Daundaun Kering’.
Suraidi Sipan is a former teacher
with a career that spans over
40 years. He worked as a
specialist writer for the Ministry
of Education (MOE) and as a
contributing editor for the Singa
journal from 1982 to 1986. He
was also the main editor for
the Malay literature anthology
TEKAD (2012), and edited the
teacher’s companion guide to
TEKAD as well. In both 1978 and
1983, he received the Anugerah
Persuratan (Malay Literary
Award) for his poems ‘Nyanyi
Puisi’ and ‘Kejujuran Adalah
Daun-Daun Kering’.
Tan Chee Lay has lived in
Singapore, Taiwan and the
UK, and has studied Chinese
Literature, English Studies
and Business Administration.
He completed his doctorate
in Oriental Studies (Chinese
literature) at St John’s College,
Cambridge University. He was
awarded the coveted Young
Artist Award by the National
Arts Council in 2004 and the
Singapore Youth Award (Culture
and the Arts), the highest
accolade for youth, in 2006. He is
currently the Deputy Executive
Director of the Singapore
Centre for Chinese Language,
NTU (http://www.sccl.sg)
and has written and edited
over 20 creative writing and
academic books in both Chinese
and English.

After retiring, he joined Lingzi
Media as a Reading Consultant.

and reading activities for
parents, teachers and students in
recent years.

THE BASICS
When is WGR happening?
29 February to 12 March 2016.
Who will be featured in this edition?
Please refer to pages 22 to 35 of the programme
booklet for a list of the featured speakers.
What kinds of programmes are available?
Storytelling events, talks and workshops in the four
official languages – English, Chinese, Malay or Tamil
– are available for students from Pre-Primary to
Tertiary levels, as well as for teachers.
Refer to pages 4 to 21 of the WGR programme
booklet for more details.
What is the maximum and minimum audience size
for these programmes?
Unless otherwise stated in the programme write-up,
the recommended audience size for talks is 50 - 400
students.
Unless otherwise stated in the programme write-up,
the maximum audience size for workshops is 30 and
the recommended minimum is 10.
Where will programmes be held?
At your school itself! Speakers will be parachuted
into your school to conduct programmes. Exceptions
to this include pre-scheduled sessions, teachers’
workshops and public programmes.

Prices of individual programmes are indicated in the
write-up, and also summarised in the following table:

How do I make payment?
For school programme bookings, you will be invoiced
after WGR ends on 12 March. Government schools
may pay electronically; private schools will need to
issue a cheque. Cash payment is not accepted except
for pre-scheduled events.

BOOKING A PROGRAMME
Do my students need to read the books
beforehand?
No. However, you should encourage them to do
so, so they can engage with the speaker on a more
meaningful level and maximise their learning
experience. Also, reading is fun.
Step 1 – Choose a speaker and programme.
Step 2 – Choose a date and time that suits your
class schedule AND fits within the available dates of the speaker.
Step 3 – Make a booking online at
www.singaporewritersfestival.com/wgr/
online-booking.
Step 4 – A WGR representative will be in touch to
confirm the booking within 5 working days.
When can I make a booking?
The booking period is from 4 January 2016 till 10
February 2016. As bookings are accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis, schools are encouraged to
book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
What happens if I want to book a programme
but the speaker’s schedule is already full?
You will be put on a waiting list and a WGR
representative will be in touch if a slot becomes
available at a later date.
Can I cancel/change a booking after it has
been confirmed?
Yes. Please inform the WGR representative if
you need to change or cancel your booking. Do
note that changes in date and time are subject to
speaker availability.
Once a booking is confirmed, a surcharge of 50%
of the event fee will be charged for any activity
cancelled after 10 February 2016 and the full event
fee will be charged for any activity cancelled after 29
February 2016.
Note: The Singapore Writers Festival reserves the
right to cancel a session if students behave very badly
during the session, or physically or verbally abuse
the speaker. We urge all schools and students to play
an active role in ensuring that all participants in the
programme are treated with respect at all times.

How will they be managed?
Once your booking has been confirmed, a WGR
representative will link you up with Closetful of
Books, our official bookseller, to discuss book sales.
Talks with more than 50 students will be followed
by on-site book sales and signing unless you opt
otherwise. Please set aside at least 30 minutes for
this after the session.
You also have the option to pre-order the books
before the event day. Closetful of Books will accept
cash, cheques and bank transfers for individual
orders. If you would like to order books for your

Crystal Goh lost her voice
to spasmodic dysphonia
in 2011. Since then she
has explored new ways
to tap into her voice and
Diamonds On The Street,
a collective that supports
at-risk youths in turning
personal reflections into art, is one of the results
of her exploration. Performance poet Marc Nair
captures moments from everyday life in his poems,
exploring his identity and larger social issues. In their
very first collaboration, Crystal and Marc will work
with at-risk youths to co-create stories in spoken

right from wrong when one does not have access
to full information, especially in times of conflict?
Join freelance American journalist Atia Abawi who
will zero in on her experience sieving truth from
falsehood as a former foreign correspondent in
Afghanistan. Born to Afghan parents in Germany, she
covered the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden as part
of NBC’s news team in May, 2011.

of short story compilations of writers’ recollections
of places which they grew up in.
