this year’s APLA Annual Regional Conference puts the focus on rethinking and revitalising our
management practices, organizational processes and structures for maximum efficiency and
effectiveness so that great performance can be sustained in the face of many challenges in today’s
ever-changing environment.
The Government Lottery Office of Thailand, with support from Singapore Pools on the business
programme, has lined up a power-packed 3-day conference to share the latest consumer trends,
business insights and best practices from renowned thought leaders, lottery operators and APLA
Sponsors. One of the key highlights is the introduction of “In Conversation” sessions. This discussion
format between speakers and moderators will immerse participants in a lively exchange of ideas while
broadening our minds on how corporate social responsibility and people assets can be harnessed in
innovative ways. We have also retained the popular “Debate Session” to contemplate the divergent
views on whether aggressive marketing by gaming operators makes us irresponsible ones.

Highlights of the Business Programme

Prof Mahbubani has had the good fortune of enjoying a career in government and, at
the same time, in writing extensively on public issues. He was with the Singapore
Foreign Service for 33 years (1971-2004) where he had postings in Cambodia (197374), Malaysia, Washington DC and New York, where he served two postings as
Singapore’s Ambassador to the UN and as President of the UN Security Council in
January 2001 and May 2002. He was Permanent Secretary at the Foreign Ministry
from 1993 to 1998. Currently, he is the Dean and Professor in the Practice of Public
Policy at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) of the National
University of Singapore. In the world of ideas, he has spoken and published globally,
and is recognised as an expert on Asian and world affairs. His new book is “The Great
Convergence: Asia, the West, and the Logic of One World”. He was selected as one of
Foreign Policy’s Top Global Thinkers in 2010 and 2011.

Professor Dr Foo Check Teck, (www.suntzuinstitute.com) (“Renaissance Man”,
Straits Times) founded the world’s first ever “Mind of Sun Tzu” university module at
Nanyang Technological University. His doctoral research “Organizing Strategy: Sun
Tzu Business Warcraft” was chosen by Blackwell in Oxford, England as “Spring’s
Choice”. His in-depth, psychological study, “Reminiscences of an Ancient Strategist:
Mind of Sun Tzu” was chosen by prestigious London’s “World Review” for top
leaders. BBC Global Finance interviewed him and “Reminiscences” won the top
national, Singapore’s NBDCS book prize (translated into Russian). Recently, he
appears on the US History Channel TV on interpreting Art of War for major battles.
Globally he is well known for his leading role in founding as Editor, the Chinese
Management Studies: within four years, a SSCI index journal. From 2004-2011 he
held Chair of Strategy, University of St Andrews, UK. He stays updated on China through his Research
Professorship (University Researcher) with Harbin Institute of Technology.

Neal is Managing Director of MediaCom Malaysia. MediaCom is a Total
Communications company with 4,600 employees, and 116 offices in 89 countries. It
provides business and marketing solutions, anchored on consumer knowledge and
insights, integrated communication strategies, content ideation and execution, and
digital and mainstream media. MediaCom Malaysia is on an accelerated growth
mode from 2011. New business partnerships over the last 2 years include Procter &
Gamble, The Coca Cola Company, Shell, Fonterra and CIMB. Neal’s 20+ years of
communications experience spans work for various local and multinational brands, to
include: Nestle, Volkswagen, Shell, Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive,
HSBC, Coca-Cola, Malaysia Airlines and Proton.

Venus is Corporate Communications Director of SCG (Siam Cement Group), a 100year-old conglomerate in Thailand with 5 businesses in cement, chemicals, paper,
building materials and distribution in ASEAN. Internationally recognized for
sustainability, SCG is the only company in ASEAN to be classified in the highest-level
Gold Class from 2008 to 2012 by Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI), a global
sustainable best practice ranking index for companies by evaluating aspects of
economic, social, and environment. Venus has 27 years of experience in marketing
and corporate communications. Prior to joining SCG in 2005, she worked at Michelin
Siam Group. She started her career as a news reporter at The Daily News Limited in
1984.

Terri is co-author of nine books, including “Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands: The Bestselling
Guide to Doing Business in More Than Sixty Countries” (a Library Journal “Best
Business Books” Winner, with over 285,000 copies sold) and “Dun & Bradstreet’s
Guide to Doing Business Around the World”. She conducts seminars in intercultural
communications, diversity & inclusion and writes for many publications, including the
“World Wise” column in Business Traveler Magazine. Her new book, “Kiss, Bow or
Shake Hands: Sales & Marketing” is an Amazon.com bestseller, and was #2 on
BusinessWeek’s best business book list. She is President of Getting Through
Customs, developers of the Kiss Bow or Shake Hands Database – now available
through McGraw-Hill Digital.

Jean-Luc is active in the gaming sector since 1989 and, after holding a number of
positions in this industry, he joined in 1998 the Swiss lottery and sport betting
operator, Loterie Romande. After being promoted as Deputy CEO in 2001, he took
over the position of CEO of Loterie Romande in January 2007. He has been
prominently involved in European Lotteries (EL) and the World Lottery Association
(WLA) for a number of years and was elected President of the WLA in September
2012. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of
Lausanne, and is actively involved in voluntary and community work in his home
country of Switzerland.

Dr Jindanuwat is Country Human Resources Manager of IBM Thailand responsible for
end-to-end process of HR country operations and execution of HR policies from IBM
global initiatives. She has over 15 years of business consulting experience in human
capital management and strategy & change management. She led the transformation
initiatives for IT strategic outsourcing projects, where she designed and executed
strategic HR solutions to assimilate and transform new workforce from outsourcing
engagements. She holds a Ph.D and MBA in Business Management from the
Graduate School of Management at University of California, USA. She is a regular
speaker at business management conferences and events and an invited guest
speaker at business schools of renowned universities in Thailand.

Paul is Senior Partner and Asia Middle East Turkey and Africa business leader for
Employee Health & Benefits at Mercer. He has been with Mercer for 31 years,
previously leading their Information business in Asia and their total rewards consulting
services with clients in Europe and Middle East, and has experience in outsourced
benefit administration, retirement consulting, human capital consulting, health &
benefits consulting and total rewards. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered
Institute of Personnel and Development. He is also an Associate of the Pensions
Management Institute in the UK and the Irish Institute of Pensions Managers.

Prof Chiu is Research Director of the Institute on Asian Consumer Insight (ACI),
Executive Director of the Culture Science Institute, and Professor and Director of
Research at the College of Business, Nanyang Business School. He received his PhD
in social-personality psychology from Columbia University, and taught at the University
of Hong Kong from 1994 to 2002 and the University of Illinois from 2002 to 2008. He is
an Elected Fellow of the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the recipient
of several international research awards including the Misumi Award (2007) from the
Japanese Group Dynamics Association and Asian Association for Social Psychology.
He is the Editor of two book series published by Oxford University Press (Advances in
Culture and Psychology; Frontiers in Culture and Psychology) and Associate Editor of
the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.

Simon is the ASEAN Digital Strategy Lead within Accenture Interactive, Management
Consulting Service Line, working out of Singapore. He has 13 years’ eCommerce
experience with extensive experience identifying and implementing disruptive digital
opportunities, increasing user engagement through Gamification, optimizing digital
channels within the Asia Pacific region, focusing on User Experience Optimization,
Website Conversion, Localization, Mobile Commerce, and Digital Analytics. His
industry expertise includes eCommerce, tourism and leisure, airlines, and
construction. He holds a degree in History from the University of Surrey, UK.

Visit Chiang Mai's top landmark, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a golden temple containing Buddha's relics,

famous for its gardens of roses and ferns.

 Closing Dinner (21 Nov):
Enjoy Lanna-style dining experience with a Khan Toke dinner under moonlit sky at Old Chiang Mai Cultural
Center. A traditional northern Thai style of dining, a Khan Toke is a raised tray to keep food served at a level
higher than the ground on special occasions for guests. Several traditional performances will be shown during the
meal where guests are welcomed to participate in the dance.

 Networking Day (22 Nov, lunch included):
Visit Mae Sa Elephant Camp and have a chance to feed elephants and watch elephant shows. Home to one of
the largest assemblies of elephants in north Thailand, the camp conserves and breeds elephants in a natural and
healthy environment, to help address the dwindling number of Asian elephants in the wild. (A separate fee is
payable if you wish to take a ride on an elephant through the tropical jungle). Take a time to rest and relax while
having lunch at one of Chiang Mai’s butterfly and orchid farm on the way back to the hotel.

cotton house offering various products and clothes specially made from delicate cotton.

Acceptance of registration submitted by non-APLA members and non-WLA members is subject to the
approval of the Asia Pacific Lottery Association. In case of rejection, all payments will be refunded.

In the event of cancellation, written notification should be sent to the registration office.

Cancellation requiring refund is subject to US$30/- administration fee.

No refund if cancellation is made after registration closing date i.e. 4 November 2013 and refund of
