Caring for women’s
special needs …
at every stage of life.
Whether it’s gynecology and urology;
advanced 3-D mammography or obstetrics,
labor and delivery, the Women & Children’s
Center at Lakewood Ranch provides the care
women need for a lifetime of good health.
For detailed information about childbirth
and parenting classes offered at the
Women & Children’s Center, visit
www.lakewoodranchmedicalcenter.com.
Separate from the main hospital and with
convenient parking, the center offers large,
private LDRP suites (labor, delivery, recovery,
postpartum); operating rooms; medical/
surgical beds, and exam/triage rooms.
At the Breast Health Center, 3-D
mammograms allow physicians to examine
breast tissue one layer at a time, increasing
their ability to detect very small cancers
during the first screening.

AIR CONDITIONING
It’s spring in Florida. That means running your A/C full-time. Are you prepared?
With summer approaching, having an indoor comfort system in tip-top shape is important
to our overall comfort. While many of us don’t think about our A/C unit until it gives us
trouble, now is not the time to ignore your system. It needs regular maintenance, just
like your car, and hiring a contractor you can trust will pay great dividends in the long run.
According to ACCA, The Indoor Environment & Energy Efficiency Association, there
are too many people out there who call themselves “contractors” but who aren’t true
professionals. We encourage you to know the right questions to ask so that you choose
the right HVAC contractor.
Please visit the ACCA’s web-site at acca.org/homes for helpful answers to these questions
to ask yourself before hiring a contractor:

Volunteers Needed
for Project T.E.A.C.H.
Friday, May 20
Thank You to Our Sponsor:
When was the last time you had the opportunity to go back to school… and not worry about
all that homework? Now’s your chance! More than 130 volunteers are needed for the 2016
Project T.E.A.C.H. program. The program is designed to increase career awareness among
4th grade students and stress the importance of first impressions. For many students, this is
one of the first times they have had a business volunteer in their classroom and the first time
they have been exposed to careers other than those of their parents.
The program begins with an orientation breakfast at 7:30 AM at Freedom Village, sponsored by
Manatee Education Foundation. During this breakfast, volunteers will be given all instructions
and supplies. Volunteers then travel to their assigned schools to present Project T.E.A.C.H.
from 9:00 – 10:00 AM.
Please consider volunteering and encouraging your staff/co-workers to participate, too. It only
takes a few hours of your morning on May 20 - and we promise no homework!

A Fond Farewell
We were sad to say farewell to two of our Information Specialists recently. Karen
Sivia and Michele Passarelli both decided it was time to retire and enjoy the Florida
lifestyle that they have helped so many visitors learn about as our Information
Specialists. After helping over 7,000 visitors annually at the McClure Center at
Lakewood Ranch, both ladies will be starting a new chapter in their lives. We wish
them well and will miss them greatly!

Welcome Aboard to Our Newest
Staff Members
Now we welcome our two new Information Specialists, Kimberly Hinkle and Diane
Pluchino. Kimberly joins us after many years in hospitality management, most
notably at Walt Disney World. Kimberly enjoys spending time with her two children
(especially at the Magic Kingdom), reading and riding her bicycle. Diane spent
many years with IBM. When not at work, Diane enjoys reading a good mystery
novel, gardening, and watching football.
Please stop by our Lakewood Ranch Office to say "hi" and help us welcome
Kimberly and Diane!

Tech TIPS
Mobile Optimization
Is the Wave of NOW, Not the Future
By Cassandra I. Burns, Realtor
The Greiner Group at Wagner Realty
Manatee Chamber Technology Committee Member
Have you ever found yourself with the TV
on, watching a video on your phone--or
maybe looking at a website searching for
that perfect pair of flip flops or cooler for
summer? Mobile is our 24-7 connection.
As a local Realtor, and Technology
Committee member with the Manatee
Chamber, I am constantly searching for
information and working with clients, as
most of us are local business owners
and want our services and product at the
consumers’ fingertips. Mobile has created a
change and become the norm in the world
today.
Everyone has smart phones with them,
constantly communicating and looking for
information. In many countries, the number
of smart phones has surpassed the number
of personal computers. Having a mobilefriendly website has become a critical part
of having an online presence with your
business, and a must have!
What Is Mobile Optimization?
Mobile optimization is the process of
ensuring that visitors who access your site
from mobile devices have an experience
optimized for the device, phone, tablet, etc.
Every year people spend more and more
time on their mobile devices and tablets,
but many websites still aren't designed to
account for different screen sizes and load
times (how long it takes for a site to load
on your device). Mobile optimization takes
a look at site design, site structure, page
speed, and more to make sure you're not
inadvertently turning mobile visitors away.
In the USA, 94% of people with smart
phones search for local information on
their phones. Interestingly, 77% of mobile
searches occur at home or at work, places
where desktop computers are likely to be
present. (Google)
The desktop version of a site might be
difficult to view and use on a mobile device.
The version that's not mobile-friendly
30
ManateeChamber.com
requires the user to pinch or zoom in order
to read the content. Consumers and users
find this a frustrating experience and are
likely to abandon the site. Alternatively,
the mobile-friendly version is readable and
immediately usable.
How Do I Start?
The work involved in making a mobilefriendly site can depend on your developer
resources, business model, and expertise.
On a very basic implementation level,
transitioning an existing desktop site to
mobile entails using existing sections of
content from the desktop site and organizing
them in a mobile-friendly design pattern.
For more information on the technical
implementation of a mobile site, whether
you hire a developer or do it yourself,
contact the Manatee Chamber for local
expert recommendations.
How Much Does It Cost to Build
a Site for Mobile Devices?
The answer is... it varies! For example, here
are some of the possibilities:
Going mobile can be free if you
can select a responsive template or
theme for your website. A responsive
template/theme adapts the display to
the visitor no matter if they are using a
desktop, tablet, or mobile phone.

Going mobile can be free if you have
the technical skills to build your mobile
site.
Going mobile will likely cost time and
money, but hire a developer and expert
in the field. Furthermore, if your website
was created several years ago, a new
developer might recommend starting
from scratch (a complete makeover).
This is because there are new web
development techniques and themes
(or page templates) that may make it
more efficient to re-do -- rather than
modify -- your site. This is especially
the case for sites built with Flash or
using outdated e-commerce platforms,
etc.
The good news is that if you start from
scratch there may be an existing template/
theme that your developer can utilize. You
may be able to reuse your existing content
which can hopefully save time and money.
Mobile is critical to your business and will
continue to be so – whether you’re blogging
about your favorite sports team, working on
the website for your community theater, or
selling products to potential clients. Make
sure visitors can have a good experience
on your site when they’re visiting from their
mobile devices! No matter which step you
choose next, choose to go mobile!
