Discover Camp (formerly Critter Camp) is now enrolling campers for a brand new HSSW Camp
experience! Discover Camp is a camper's behind-the-scenes access to the Humane Society for
Southwest Washington. This VIP experience begins every morning with hands-on time meeting our
animals, education about our shelter and special guest speakers.

After lunch (included in camp registration) campers embark on a globe-trotting journey around the
world. In these lessons they explore a region of the world, learn about the area's indigenous
animals and even meet special animal

ReTails Boutique Store is Now Open
Our new ReTails location (5000 East Fourth Plain Blvd) is officially open! The store is open 7 days a
week from 10 am to 6 pm. This location is a shabby-chic themed boutique with clothing,
household items, linens, books and more!
Both ReTails locations are in need of gently used, clean shopping bags, volunteers, and of course
DONATIONS!
23rd Annual Walk/Run for the Animals: Join a Team!
It's Walk/Run time, and it's better than ever. Are you a runner? We've
added a whole new 5k run course this year with chip-timing just for our
dedicated runners!
Also new this year, skip the check-in line Saturday morning! Come to
HSSW Thursday, May 1st from 1 pm - 8 pm or Friday, May 2nd from 4 pm
- 8 pm to turn in your donations, pick up your prizes and bib if you're a
runner and we'll give you a special gift just for stopping by. And if
that's not enough excitement, there will be wine and cheese from 6-8 pm

NW Pet and Companion Fair
The NW Pet and Companion Fair is happening Saturday, April 12 - Sunday, April 13th at the
Portland Expo center! It promises to be a good time for the whole family, including your pets which
are welcome at the event.
The Humane Society for Southwest Washington will be having an offsite cat and dog adoption
event at the fair. Staff has worked very hard to make sure HSSW stands out and looks good,
so come by to say hi or look on the Volgistics schedule to sign up to volunteer at the event!

The Scoop On Poop
Please keep an eye out for updated diarrhea protocols and monitoring sheets! These are important
for keeping our pets healthy. Most diarrhea in the shelter setting can be corrected by simple
measures, so please help us with monitoring and providing indicated treatments! See a clinic staff
member if you need any clarification. Thank you!
Dog Volunteers
Dog Volunteer Meeting
Dog volunteers please join us Wednesday April 16th and 6 pm for our monthly dog meeting. We'll
be discussing dog body language with Carmen LeBlanc and Tara Zimmerman! Come for the pizza,
stay for the knowledge!
AM Dog Walkers
Just a reminder - please DO NOT OPEN GUILLIOTINES in the morning during cleaning. Also
remember to return a dog to the side of the kennel where you found it. This if for your safety and
the safety of the dogs! Thank you!
Remember Enrichment Logs

The more information we have on a dog the better. Volunteers spend much of their time
interacting with our dogs and may have more insight with individual dogs. It's important to use the
Enrichment Logs (near the sinks) and Clipboards (in the kennel aisle) to note important behavior
observations (both negative and positive) as well as any training you've been working on. This
information ultimately helps our dogs become more adoptable!
Walking Path Ettiquette
Dog walkers, please remember to give ample room between yourself and others on the walking
path. The dog you're walking may not be dog reactive/aggressive, but a fellow walker's dog may
be.
Cat Volunteers
Spring Break Party Cats Promotion
April 4th - April 6th and April 8th- April 13th the cattery will be having a Spring Break "Party Cats"
promotion!
Adopters will have the chance to play Pet Pong, and if they land their ball in a cup they can receive
up to 50% off of their adoption fee. However, the promotion excludes kittens under the legal party
cat age of 6 months.
HSSW's Own Biggest Loser: Cattery Edition
Cats Melissa, Millie, Evelyn, Schwinkle, and Paul are tipping the scales and are hoping to make
some positive changes in their lives during their stay here at HSSW. So with some help from our
volunteers and staff they're all on a rigorous diet and exercise program and competing to win our
version of the biggest loser.
Cattery volunteers can help our contestants by taking them in a social room with toys that promote
activity (laser pointers are a favorite) and encouraging them to run, play, jump, and battle their
bulge.
Kitty Melissa is currently in first place with a 3 oz weight loss. No word yet on the definitive grand
prize, but a healthier heart and a longer life are definitely huge benefits!

Spring break is in the air and our usual suspects will be out enjoying spring break. If you can help
out 10 am - 12 pm on Tuesday, April 8th it would be awesome!
Saturday/Sunday PM Dog Socializers Still Needed
Do you love helping our dogs find forever homes? Have extra time to volunteer? Saturday and
Sundays are our busiest days and we could really use help with PM Dog Socialization. If you like
working with our patrons and our dogs this could be a fun volunteer opportunity for you.
If you're interested and already assigned to Dog Socialization feel free to sign up whenever it suits
you. If you're new to Dog Socialization please contact Jeni JMorgan@southwesthumane.org to set

Monthly Spotlight: Joyce Garrett
Joyce Garrett is an amazing volunteer whose been with us for about a year, who
is currently working in Admissions. Friendly and pleasant to be around, Joyce is
an asset to the HSSW team. Thanks for your service Joyce!
Q: What made you start volunteering for the Humane Society, and when
did you start?
A: I started volunteering at the Humane Society because of my love of animals. I
know that's what wall of us say but it is TRUE!
Q: What volunteer duties do you perform?
A: I work admissions one day a week. I love greeting folks as they arrive and I try to determine at
the onset what they need from us. There are a variety of reasons they come: looking for a pet that
is missing, bringing a very sick one in for euthanasia, surrendering an animal that they can no
longer keep are a few things that come up. Sometimes these are very tearful occasions.
We also have what is called LEND A PAW program that enables us to give free food for pets that
come from donations. Folks qualify for this program according to their income. I go to the storage
room locate the needed food and bring it to the counter.
Frequently I escort folks through all the areas where the strays are housed. There are 5 rooms for
cats and several areas where we have dogs as well.
Q: What is most rewarding to you about being a volunteer?
A: The most rewarding thing for me is when a person actually finds their beloved pet at our
shelter. It is a cause for them to weep and I do as well. There isn't really any way for me to tell
you how emotional it is.
Q: What is the most challenging aspect of your volunteer duties?

A: The most challenging aspect of my job is the computer, I don't think I am computer illiterate
but this one stymies me frequently. Not particularly user friendly.
Tell us a little about yourself (your family, what you do for work/free time, etc.).
A: I am a retiree from a large airline, spent 36 years with them hence my ease with greeting
strangers. As a widow I find it challenging to keep busy so I also do one day at the Portland Airport
as a volunteer. I have two wonderful (and maybe some days not so wonderful) dogs. One of which
came from this place. I am an avid reader, enjoy singing in my local church choir. I also continue
to take piano lessons hoping it will keep my mind active as long as possible. I did some great
hiking in the Gorge but have had to slow down due to my knees.
Long-Timers
Every month, I'll highlight three dogs and three cats that have been in the shelter the longest.
These animals need to find a forever home ASAP! Please market these guys as much as possible,
so we don't see them here next month!

Volunteer Numbers
In March, volunteers contributed a total of 3,162 hours! This is a 16% increase from March of last
year! The most hours were recorded in Cat Socialization PM (383) followed by Dog Enrichment
(320). Thank you so much to the dedicated volunteers who worked with us in March!
Adoption Numbers
In March, HSSW took in 452 animals. The total number of adoptions during the same period was
290. (This number does not account for animals that were transferred to other organizations or
foster care, or returned to their owners.) Adoptions included 98 cats, 161 dogs, 14 kittens and 17
puppies. This is an adoption increase of 43% from March of last year! And our adoption revenue for
March was $30,945, which is a 65% increase from last year!

Weekly MEOW Shelter Update
Hello MEOW Shelter Volunteers,
Did you notice who's NOT at the shelter?
Long time MEOW resident, Ally, is being "Fostered" and has likely found her forever home. She will live with
long time MEOW Alum, Wilma who some of you may remember (also pictured). So far, the two old gals' have
agreed to take opposite ends of the couch to curl up and nap and are trading off sleeping with their humans
(Basically, whoever gets there first is the winner!) Maybe some day they will be fast friends.....

Spay/Neuter Follow-up:
Thank you to our volunteers who helped with the preparations for and caring of the kitties after the spay/neuter
clinic this last week. All the kitties were either returned safe and sound to their foster homes or stayed at the
shelter for adoption. Some were already adopted this past week!!
You may notice some changes around the shelter.....
The Volunteer Support Group is in the process of revamping and adding to the Volunteer communications
boards. The Happy Endings now have their own bulletin board in the Office/Volunteer area on the wall above
the computer closest to the back door. This allows more space for the wonderful stories we receive from our
adopters. Don't forget to check the MEOW Facebook page for adoption updates as well.
Around the corner from the treatment room the file cabinets have been moved to allow more walk-thru space as
well as allow more room to hang another bulletin/white board that will be dedicated to our Buddy
Program. Look for this in the coming weeks. The existing volunteer bulletin board will also get a fresh look
for easier reference of information and sharing.
Reminder: Animal Handling training is scheduled for this Sunday, 8/25 @ 5:30 at the shelter. If you have not
already attended this important training, we encourage you to attend this Sunday.

This year HSUS is offering a full track designed to strengthen volunteer programs at

one 4-hour shift during the conference will receive a $40 discount on full-conference

Message from Bethany
Dear Volunteers,
Thank you all so much for being flexible and adapting to the many changes happening at the Yakima Humane
Society. We are a growing group and currently have over 110 active volunteers on our team. This being said it is
important that we all keep an open line of communication, stay up-to-date on shelter policies and procedures, and
maintain our education on animal behavior and socialization. Teamwork and consistency will be key for the
continued success of our program.
Know that without all of you, YHS could not achieve our mission to end animal cruelty, overpopulation and
educate the public about responsible pet ownership. Thank you for your hard work and dedication!

Why we

with puppies
Volunteer
Puppies are always growing, always active, and always changing. Most of the changes occur as we watch
them visibly, but a lot happens "inside" that we can't see. A good example of this is a puppy's immune
system and the challenges it faces as it develops into a healthy system capable of protecting the puppy
against some serious and potentially life threatening diseases.
Usually a puppy obtains ‘maternal immunity’ through the antibodies in the mother’s milk while they nurse.
The milk from a vaccinated, healthy mother dog contains important antibodies against parvovirus and many
other diseases. As the puppy is weaned naturally- this ‘maternal immunity’ protection is no longer
available. Vaccines are a solution. The vaccine is injected into the puppy to stimulate the immune system.
It takes a series of vaccines for the puppy’s immune system to create antibodies and develop immunity.
At the shelter, our main concern is that we do not know the vaccine status and health status of the mother
dogs that may have nursed the puppies. We do not know what protection the puppies may have acquired
during nursing. Therefore, we can’t assume that any of the puppies, in our shelter, have received any of the
normal maternal antibodies against disease.
This unknown immunity status is the main reason why we are protective about how our puppies are
handled. Puppies are not taken outside as they could be exposed to infectious canine diseases such
parvovirus, distemper or upper respiratory infection. We don’t want puppies exposed to other dogs so we
carry them and restrict interactions with other dogs. We do all of this to protect the health and wellbeing of
the puppies in our care.
