Last week, Alexa Chung tweeted a pic of her Ugg-encased feet and captioned it: “My deepest
apologies.” These days, as far as we’re concerned, no apology is necessary. Nemo wasn’t as
treacherous in some places as the Weather Channel predicted, but the winter storm still bombarded
Manhattan with almost a foot of snow at the onset of New York Fashion Week. This gave way to rain
on Monday, which left lingering slush—making for some of the worst NYFW weather on record and
forcing a large swathe of the front row to rethink whatever they’d planned on wearing in favor of
something more equipped to do battle with the elements.
The unexpected weapon of choice for more than a few Vogue girls (and guys!) forced to contend with
the wintry weather? A good old-fashioned pair of Uggs. Contributing Editor Lynn Yaeger may favor
Comme des Garçons cardigans and taffeta skirts, but she’s been spotted perusing Parisian salons on
icy days in the short, black suede boots. Senior Market Editor Meredith Melling Burke first bought
hers years ago to wear après-ski, but admits they’re now pretty much après-everything—from boxing
to a long day of wearing heels. And André Leon Talley reveals he even had his monogrammed at
Nordstrom in Nashville.

“Once you put an Ugg on, it’s hard to go back to bespoke shoes,” the Vogue Contributing Editor
explains. “They are the best practical shoe—not only because they can handle the slush on sidewalks
and curbs while keeping your feet warm, but they’re also easy to accessorize. I have them in ebony,
which I call my black tie, and bark brown, and they were specially monogrammed for me in Russian
red. I of course got carried away and ordered them in triplicates. They’re lined up in my hallway by
color, and I rotate them on a daily basis.”
Even Creative Director Grace Coddington keeps hers conveniently next to her French windows at
home, so she can slip them on when it’s snowing out and she needs to refill her bird feeders. “They’re a
pretty good invention,” she says. “I wish all the It girls hadn’t discovered them years ago. . . . Once, I
was in the country, and I went over to see Helmut Lang. I said, ‘I am sorry to be wearing these boots
in your chic house.’ And he responded, ‘Don’t worry, I have them in every shape and size.’ I thought,
I’m in good company!”
Market Editor Jessica Sailer owns up to a particular fondness for the short black pair. “They began
as my footwear of choice for driving to and from the Hamptons. But after I had my daughter, they got
a lot more play. Now I practically have to force myself to wear other shoes.” Fashion News Editor
Emily Holt takes pride in the fact that she rocks the originals, refusing to upgrade. “It’s clear—I was
here first, people,” she says of the boots she’s shamelessly sported to and from Pilates.
Of all the Ugg addicts at Vogue, perhaps Accessories Editor Selby Drummond wears them best
though because she truly goes for broke in her choice of boot. “I opted for the tall Adirondack ‘otter’
style. I love them because they are full-on, weather performance utility boots,” she says. “I certainly
couldn’t put on the white Miu Miu slingbacks I had planned on wearing this week!” But, she
elaborates, “to make them work, I paired them with a silver lace Dolce & Gabbana dress—sometimes
one must elevate.”
So, whether you’re headed to the gym or posing for paparazzi, we’ve outlined the best ways to
incorporate the tried-and-true Ugg—the boot that somehow, against all odds, seems to have risen
above its one-time trend status—into your look. Adds Sailer: “Now that the cat’s out of the bag, I just
might start wearing them all the time!”
