newspapers around the
country every day.
Proud parents are always
eager to announce to the
world the birth of their
child.
But when they are 19 years
old?
Jimboomba mum Yolanda
Bogert used The CourierMail classifieds to do just
that.
It read: “A retraction
– Bogert. In 1995 we
announced the arrival of our
sprogget, Elizabeth Anne,
as a daughter. He informs
us that we were mistaken.
Oops! Our bad. We would
now like to present, our
wonderful son - Kai Bogert.
Loving you is the easiest
thing in the world. Tidy
your room.”
Just a week ago, Kai was
known to family and friends
as Beth.
Ms Bogert told The CourierMail that placing the

retraction notice was “a nobrainer”.
“I needed to show my son

RAPID HIV TESTING
METHODS
The latest HIV testing figures
released by Queensland Health
indicate a substantial increase in
rapid HIV tests being performed
across the state.
The
period
July–September
2013 saw 293 Rapid HIV tests
performed across the state, while
the same period this year saw a
doubling of those numbers with
589 tests performed. Of the 589
tests performed, 171 were done in
a community based setting.
CEO of the HIV Foundation
Queensland, Tony Majer says the
increasing number of people taking
up rapid testing was encouraging
and that he was particularly proud
of the work done by the HIV
Foundation’s recently opened peer
based Rapid HIV testing clinic
which performed 161 of the tests
recorded in this period.
“Increased testing is a key pillar of
our strategy to end HIV and the
Foundation has devoted a huge
amount of resources and effort to
delivering that message to those at
risk,” Mr Majer said.
“Importantly, the tests conducted
so far at RAPID have involved
MSM and in many cases men
who have never been tested
before meaning we are reaching
the right people. To see results
like this at RAPID in its first four
months is very encouraging and
demonstrates both the need for
and acceptance of a community
based peer-led testing facility.”
Rapid HIV testing in Queensland
was first trialled in 2012 and rolled
out in mid 2013.
QLD HEALTH HIT WITH
LESBIAN SEXUAL
HARASSMENT RULING

A former Queensland Health employee who
rejected her boss’s advances for a lesbian tryst has
been awarded $9000 compensation.
Karen Bell claimed she suffered pathological
injury and humiliation while working as the food
supervisor at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s
Hospital’s Connect Cafe in 2011 and 2012.
A State tribunal heard that Bell’s line manager
Lindy Ralph has asked her to join a threesome with
another female colleague.
The incident, which occurred at Queensland
Health’s 2011 Christmas party, was one of several
allegations of sexual harassment.
The tribunal heard that Ralph had complimented
Bell on “nice breasts”.
While travelling to a work function together, Ralph
said: “I’m sitting in you leather seats with no undies
on.”
It was claimed that Ralph bullied and publicly
belittled Bell because she had rejected her sexual
advances and reached such a point that she had
constant headaches and vomited before work at
times.
To escape the abuse, she took a lower classification
role before quitting Queensland Health.
Queensland Health made submissions that Bell’s
harassment claims were a ploy to “deflect from her
own poor work performance”.
The tribunal sided with Bell, ordering Queensland
Health and Ralph to jointly pay $9000
compensation.
And just days before the Christmas party, Ralph
allegedly repeatedly told Bell she was not wearing
any undies.

RUGBY REF GIVES HOMOPHOBIA THE RED CARD

Two rugby fans have been “red
carded” from attending all
Twickenham matches for two
years.
The ban follows accusations of
homophobic abuse aimed at
openly gay Welsh referee Nigel
Owens during England’s loss to
the All Blacks this month.

Brisbane’s LGBT swimming club
Aqualicious held its third Twilight Swim
Meet on Saturday 28 November. The meet
has become a regular event on the QLD
Masters Swimming calendar and drew
over 80 entrants from a dozen clubs.
This included several entrants from our
sister clubs: The Wett Ones from Sydney
and The Glamourhead Sharks from
Melbourne.
Although the meet involves collecting
points for your club, the main themes
are fun and inclusiveness. The signature
event was the hotly-contested Ian Davis
Memorial Relay, with the trophy going to
the team who comes closest to their entry
time. There was also a fun event in which
swimmers had to swim a lap of the pool
The fans will also have to pay
£1000 ($A1838) to a charity of
Owen’s choice.
The matter first came to light
when a spectator wrote a letter
to British newspaper The
Guardian in which he accused
a group of male fans of “hurling
... nasty, foul-mouthed, racist,
homophobic abuse” at Owens.
Owens, who is one of the sport’s
most high-profile referees, had
previously called for supporters
to be issued with stadium bans
in cases where allegations of
homophobic abuse are proven.
“They need to be told that some
behaviour is not acceptable,
that crossing the line of what is
humour and banter is a fine line,
but if you cross it then you have
to put up with the consequences,”
he told the Daily Telegraph.

RIGHTS FOR LGBT COUPLES

New Victorian Equality Minister
Martin Foley has wasted no time in
ensuring gay couples will be allowed to
adopt children.
Mr Foley said a quick review was
necessary to ensure there were no
inadvertent “mishaps” when drafting
the reforms.
Just hours after being sworn in as
part of the new Andrews government,
Mr Foley promised to expeditiously
amend adoption laws in order to bring
Victoria into line with New South
Wales, Western Australia, Tasmania
and the ACT.
“It will be dealt with as expeditiously
and as thoroughly as we can. We will
do it once, and we will do it right.”
At present, gay couples in Victoria
can be appointed as foster parents or
guardians, but do not have the right
to adopt a child together – even if that
child has been in their care for years.
The plans have been broadly welcomed
by the LGBT community, although
some are concerned the government
wants to conduct a review before it
introduces legislation into parliament.
Mr Foley’s appointment marks the
first time an Australian government
has ever had a dedicated minister
for overseeing lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender and intersex issues.
Meanwhile, same-sex couples in
Queensland are left in the wilderness.
The adoption laws in the Sunshine State
were last reviewed in 2009 when the
Bligh Government point blank refused
to consider allowing gay couples to
adopt children.
IS AUSTRALIA ABOUT TO GET ITS FIRST
(OPENLY) GAY GOVERNMENT LEADER?

Andrew Barr is set to become
Australia’s first openly gay state/
territory leader.
The door was left ajar this week
with the resignation of ACT Chief
Minister Katy Gallagher.
Mr Barr, 41, has been a champion
of same-sex equality in territory
and
national
politics
and
celebrated a civil union with his
long-time partner Anthony Toms
in Canberra in November 2009.
Last year he helped spearhead
the ACT Government’s historic
same-sex marriage law which was
subsequently overturned by the
High Court.
He was also instrumental in
moving a motion to change the
Labor Party’s national platform to
allow for same-sex marriage.
Mr Barr’s likely elevation has been
welcomed by leaders of Australia’s
gay community including former
Greens leader Bob Brown.
“The very fact that there is this
prospect without public objection
is a big breakthrough,” Mr Brown
told The Age.
“It is significant that Barr would be
a very popular choice, and shows
again that the public is way ahead
of the politicians on Capital Hill
when it comes to equality.”
Australian Marriage Equality
deputy director Ivan HintonTeoh said Mr Barr’s success was
recognition of “the overwhelming
support and acceptance gay and
lesbian Canberrans enjoy in
Canberra”.
“It reflects the enormous amount
of broad support that Canberrans
have for diversity so I am delighted
that the ACT will be the first
jurisdiction to have an openly gay
political leader,” he said.

Mel B has has spoken publicly about
her long term same-sex relationship
for the first time.
The former Spice Girl, 39, told The
Guardian that she had been in a fouryear relationship with a woman before
meeting husband Stephen Belafonte,
who she married in 2007.
“I’ve definitely not been shy or been
one to hold back. If I wanted to try
something, I did. I had a girlfriend. So
what?”
Mel B confirmed last month she had
had relationships with women but said
she doesn’t identify as gay.
“I was just one of those ladies. Now I’m
happily married,” she explained.
“I did have a four-year relationship
with a woman. But I’ve been very
happily married for seven years to a
penis,” she said.
“People call me lesbian, bisexual or
heterosexual, but I know who’s in my
bed and that’s it … I have a huge libido
and a great sex life.”
“Ha ha! An amazing guy.
She also put to bed rumours that she
has been “intimate” with women since
marrying Belafonte.
“No, me and my husband are very tight
and solid,” Mel B said.
“But I will be the first one to
compliment a woman, to say to my
husband, ‘Oh my God, look at her legs’,
or, ‘Doesn’t she look stunning?’
“I do think women are gorgeous. Crazy
but gorgeous.”

THEIR 10TH ANNIVERSARY WHEN I WAS 4 YEARS OLD
British singer Sam Smith has a lot to
be happy about this Christmas – his
debut solo album In the Lonely Hour
went number one around the world
this year and he has just been selected
as the artist who will write the next
007 theme song. On top of all of this
he has also proven to be a great gay
role model.
Speaking to Ellen this month Smith
was particularly humble in the roll he
plays as an openly gay performer.
Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia
De Rossi have celebrated their tenth
anniversary as a coupe this month,
marking the occasion with a gorgeous
make-up free selfie.
Despite constant media reports that the
couple’s marriage is on the rocks, the
pair have both appeared very happy in
public lately after a tough 2014 that saw
De Rossi enter rehab to deal with her
alcohol issues.
DeGeneres recently said that she falls
more in love with her wife every day, and
although the couple have not commented
on the rumours that they were ready to
split earlier this year, it seems they are
aware of them.
“The truth is, and this is corny, I fall more
in love with Portia all the time. I really
do. She surprises me all the time. It’s
what anyone experiences when you find
that person that gets you, wants to take
care of you, wants the best for you. We’re
really lucky because we know how rare it
is,” she told People Magazine.

“I came out when I was like 4 years
old,” Smith revealed. “My mum said
she knew when I was like 3. So I didn’t
have to actually properly come out.”
“So you waited a year to tell her?”
DeGeneres joked.
“I came out at a very, very young
age. I kind of just felt like I needed to
mention it before I released the record
just so people knew what it was about.”
“I get upset sometimes because I don’t
talk about it too much. People say, ‘He
doesn’t want to be a spokesman for the
gay community.’ I do, of course I do,”
Smith said.
“I want to be a spokesman for
everyone,” “Ya know, straight people,
gay people, bisexual. I don’t want to be
limited.”
The 22 year old singer decided to come
out publicly shortly before the release
of his hit album but the news was not
a shock to those who knew him, and
particularly not for his mother Kate.

Getting a loan to renovate your

Back in the early 90’s
when I was a medical
student,
hospital
infectious disease wards
around the world were
overflowing with people
dying of AIDS. In
Australia these people
were predominantly gay
men, often quite young
and previously healthy.
AIDS survivors from
that era remember it
as a horrifying time. If
facebook had existed
back then, your feed
would have been full of
funeral
notifications
and outpourings of grief.
Doctors felt helpless
and patients and their
families felt hopeless.
The drugs available then
were often highly toxic,
had terrible side effects
and involved taking loads
HEALTHY LIVING
HEALTHY LIVING
of pills. They did, however,
keep many people alive.
Then came the advent of
HAART - highly active
antiretroviral
therapy.
At first there were only a
few drugs, but as newer
and
better
tolerated
drugs appeared, and we
learnt what combinations
worked,
treatment
became more refined.
And so here we are 20
years later. We have 3
single tablet regimens
(one pill a day options),
and another arriving
next year. New treatment
options are virtually side
effect-free.
Treatment can be tailored
to the individual. For
example, some drugs are a
better choice if you are at
high risk of heart disease
or kidney disease. Now
that treatment is simpler

and safer we are able to
offer it earlier, which we
know leads to better longterm outcomes. Although
there is still no cure for
HIV, there is the prospect
of long healthy lives for
people on treatment.
The next challenge is to
prevent more infections.
Transmission rates are
climbing again, it seems
due to lack of condom
use. In the future we may
see funding for PreP (pills
you take to protect you
from catching HIV), but
currently you can only get
these on a private script,
and it’s not cheap. Until
PreP becomes publicly
available condoms are
still your best protection
against HIV.

MADONNA SPRINGS A LEAK:
NEW SONGS APPEAR ONLINE
Two new Madonna songs titled “Rebel
Heart” and “Wash All Over Me” have been
leaked online… and she’s not happy about it!
Both tracks are reportedly songs Madonna
recorded with Swedish superstar DJ Avicii
during the pair’s studio sessions earlier this
year.
Fans were elated by the appearance of
new material but the singer was furious,
Instagramming a photo of a smashed iPod.
“This broken ipod is a symbol of my broken
heart! That my music has been stolen and
leaked! I have been violated as a human and an
artist! #f--kedups--t,” she wrote.
Her manager, Guy Oseary, had previously
tweeted: “I would be grateful to any @
madonna fans that can assist us in finding
those responsible for the leak. We appreciate
your help.”
In 2012, the singer complained to Graham
Norton about fans hacking the Madonna
mainframe and leaking her music early: “It’s
terrible, can’t people just wait and let me finish
it? … Are they really my fans? If they love me
so much, why don’t they let me put it out when
I want to put it out?”
The new album, Madonna’s thirteenth and her
first since 2012’s MDNA, is expected next year.
Over the last year she has been keeping her
Instagram followers updated on its progress by
posting photos of lyrics, sheet music and selfies
with collaborators.

at the Pacha NYC nightclub to raise

of her next Australian tour dates after

The ever effervescent pop icon Leo Sayer still feels
like dancing.
He’s titled his new album “Restless Years” and he
doesn’t even want to hear the other ‘r’ word.
“No, never retire, never give it up! No way!” the
66-year-old said.
Leo paid tribute to two of his friends, Rolling Stones
rockers Ian McLagan and Bobby Keys, who both
passed away within a day of each other in December.
“These people are all in my age group. I come from
the same generation of music,” Leo said.
“I think we have a duty and a legacy to carry on
because the young bands just don’t play like we did.
“Look at the Rolling Stones: they’re still the best rock
and roll band in the world. They’ll never be beaten.
When you see them on stage at their concert you go,
‘That’s they way it should be done!’”
The energetic entertainer has had ups and downs
over the years but has enjoyed a four-decade career
comprising five top ten albums, a Grammy, and
writing credits for a roll call of fellow music legends.
“You Make Me Feel Like Dancing,” “When I Need
You,” “One Man Band,” “Thunder in My Heart” and
“More Than I Can Say” were all hits for Leo in the
70’s and 80’s.
This year he joined Joe Camilleri, Richard Clapton
and Russell Morris on the APIA Good Times Tour
around the country.
Leo said that the show was such a success he’s
recruited that tour’s band for his new solo Restless
Years show, which will feature a mix of hits and
his new material when it comes to several regional
Queensland venues next year.
“I took them into the studio [to record the new
album] and now they’ve all agreed to join me on this
new tour, which is fantastic,” he explained.
“I can’t wait to hear what they make of the old songs
too, because I know that they’ll be brilliant.”
British-born Leo became an Australian citizen five
years ago, a move he said he’d been contemplating
for years.
“I used to make the records overseas but when I’d
come here to tour them, quite honestly per capita the
enthusiasm in Australia was like nowhere else in the
world,” he said.
“Australia has always been a place that made me feel
very much at home. I can be a completely loony here
and they love me! Other countries would go ‘Oh,
steady on, Leo!’ Or in America they’d go ‘My god!
You’ve got to be cooler than that Leo!’
“Here I can be a raving loony and they just love it!
It’s perfect.”

How many fish and chip shops out
there would have a disused door repurposed as your table? Perhaps best
known for championing the cause of
sustainable fishing and promoting
under appreciated locally sourced
marine species on their menu, the food
at Swampdog is certainly as good as
what you’ll find at any other respectable
fish and chippery in town.
In place of fish sold as “cod” (which is in
fact imported hake or hoki) or “flake”
(any number of small shark species,
often considered threatened or even
endangered) which is commonplace in
many other establishments, you get the
likes of Moreton Bay mullet and local
whiting. The local mackerel available
here is a white firm-fleshed fish with
a pleasant mild flavour and less oily
then the mackerel species endemic
in Australia’s southern states. A firm
favourite with Swampdog patrons,
it’s really good served crumbed, or
grilled and served with a pineapple
and coriander salsa and Asian-inspired
salad for a healthier choice. It’s no secret
that the chips aren’t hand cut, but the
Swampdog kitchen do fry a mean batch,
and the results still taste pretty good.
There’s a range of seasonal limited time
specials featuring various types of
marine life cooked in various ways, and
sometimes they’ll have a species you have
never heard of available as fish of the day!
Other notable dishes include the tempura
whiting with ginger prawn mousse: think
battered nori rolls stuffed with whiting,
pea mash and the aforementioned prawn
mousse with a faint gingery aftertaste.
Swampdog also offers dinner pack
combos which are good value for money,
but here’s a tip: they are currently offering
a $12 hunger buster combo deal, available
only if you claim the offer through their
Facebook page. Being adventurous and
contributing towards the sustainability
of Australia’s local fisheries never tasted
so good!

METHOD
1. Grease the 4 ramekin
dishes.
2. Melt chocolate and Nuttelex
together in a microwave bowl
for 1 minute. Stir until smooth
glossy.
3. In another large bowl, whisk
eggs for about 5 minutes until
a light pale yellow.
4. Gently, mix the chocolate
with the egg.
5. Add the sifted flour, salt
and cocoa. Fold it in gently.
Combine well.
6. Place the thick batter into
a piping bag. Carefully fill
the ramekins evenly, without
messing up the sides.
7. Tap ramekins on the bench
to remove air bubbles. Place
the filled ramekins in an
oven dish with deep sides and
refrigerate for 30-40 minutes
8. Preheat the oven to
220C/425F.
9. Pour hot water into the oven
dish, half way up the ramekins
and bake for 15 minutes.
10. Dust with icing sugar and
place each ramekin on a plate
with a huge strawberry. Serve
with cream or ice-cream.
For those more adventurous,
stand for 10 minutes before
attempting to remove the hot
cake from the ramekin or
simply serve as is, like I do.
INGREDIENTS (for 4-6 ramekins)
1 cup of dark chocolate chips
3-4 Tbs Nuttelex lite (or butter)
2 large eggs and 1 extra yolk
3 Tbs caster sugar
3 Tbs of plain flour
2 tsp of 100% pure cocoa powder
1 pinch of salt
A little pure icing sugar to dust

One of the more unnecessary sequels
to be thrown our direction, ‘Horrible
Bosses 2’ suffers in that it offers little
more than its 2011 predecessor yet at
the same time delivers on what you’d
expect. There’s a slight sense that the
crew behind the cameras were too
afraid to reel the actors in, and so we
have a plethora of amusing sequences
that play out much longer than they
should with each player going for it as
long as they possibly can.
It isn’t all a waste though as Jason
Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie
Day are likeable enough, and you
more or less want to see them succeed
in taking down their “horrible boss”,
who this time around is in the form of
Christoph Waltz as a smarmy investor
who promises to pay the lads a healthy
sum for their new invention – an all-inone washing companion called ‘Shower
Buddy’ – only to steal the idea out from
under them. Not willing to take it lying
down, the trio hitch a plan to kidnap
his son (a deliriously lively Chris Pine)
and hold him for ransom, only for it to
backfire when the son wants in on the
plan realising his father isn’t in such a
hurry to pay up.
It’s a ludicrous concept, even moreso
than the original, and your enjoyment
of this will very much stem from how
you reacted to the first as this is basically
playing by the same rules. Bateman,
Sudeikis and Day all play their assigned
parts acceptably, Waltz is sadly wasted
in a villainous role that he nonetheless
relishes, but Pine proves surprisingly
effective with his comedic chops as he
throws himself wholeheartedly into
his role. Though much like the first
outing, it’s Jennifer Aniston who walks
away with the film, reprising her role
as the nympho-maniacal dentist ready
to drill anyone who crosses her path;
the dialogue she is strapped with goes
beyond the barriers of decency but you
can’t help but be impressed at how game
the actress is in delivering such offensive
material.
‘Horrible Bosses 2’ probably should of
come together more cohesively than
it has, and anyone expecting smart
comedy can skip this immediately, but
there’s a clear sense of fun here and if
you enjoyed (stomached?) the original,
there’s no reason why a second meeting
shouldn’t be just as satisfying.
