CAN YOU HELP
EXPUNGE
HISTORICAL
GAY SEX
CONVICTIONS
IN QLD?
MILLA: THE
BRAVE BRISBANE
BOY’S STORY OF
TRANSITION AND
ACCEPTANCE
By Rod Gardiner
These days, video clips on social
media are a dime a dozen.
But now and then one pops up that
is priceless. Such is the case with
the inspirational video clip which
recounts the story of Milla Brown, a
little Kiwi girl who wanted nothing
more than to be a little boy.
The LGBTI Legal Service is on a mission to
have historical convictions for consensual gay
sex expunged in Queensland but they need
your help!
It documents Milla’s journey from
birth until today, when at the age of
9 he is “extremely happy” to be living
as a boy.
The service is looking into law reform options
and working with other stakeholders to prepare
a discussion paper for submission to the State
Government.
But his happiness is compromised by
the isolation and bullying which sadly
accompanies those living with gender
dysphoria.
Legal Service director Emile McPhee said a key
part of successful reform is personal stories of
those affected by the archaic laws.
“We need to reach people who are willing to
share their stories,” he said.
“We have no doubt that those people are out
there, but we need to encourage them to come
forward.”
Mr McPhee said it is important that those who
were convicted under these laws finally be
“freed” from that stigma and history.
“For some people, there may not be a noticeable
difference. However, for others, there has been
a continued struggle and internalised stigma
attaching to a prosecution for something which
should never have been illegal,” he said.
“We need to take steps towards righting that
injustice.
“We need to be able to show the Queensland
Government that there are people they represent
who have, in some way, been affected.”
Mr McPhee emphasised that people can retain
their anonymity. “We are alive to the issues
which people may face in contributing their
stories and are happy to work with individuals to
ensure that they are comfortable with whatever is
published,” he said.
Anyone interested in sharing their story can
contact the LGBTI Legal Service by email on
either lgbtilegalservice@gmail.com or info@
lgbtilegalservice.org or by phone on 0401 936 232.
Despite constant bullying, Milla
insists he is staying with the
decision and the video is a plea for
understanding and support.
“I feel like I am in the wrong body,” he
says. “I am having a really hard time
at school at the moment, kids tease me
all the time.
“Nobody wants to be my friend. I just
want people to accept me for who I
am.”
The video shows the journey since
his mother Renee Fabish found out
she was pregnant with her second
daughter in 2004.
The slideshow of photos and messages
written by Ms Fabish includes the
difficult times she had gone through
when Milla came to her in tears
asking if there was medicine that
could turn her into a boy.
It reveals how he insisted on wearing
boys’ clothes from two years old and
later demanded all his blonde hair be
cut off.
Ms Fabish, who is from New
Plymouth but now lives with her
family in Brisbane, posted the video
online two weeks ago.
She told the Herald on Sunday that
the response had been overwhelming.
“It was only ever intended to be for
my friends and family to make them
aware of the change Milla was going
through,” she said.
“They know, but it was just putting it
out there publicly so no one had any
questions.
“It has definitely taken me by surprise
and I’m very overwhelmed at the
response that it’s got.”
Ms Fabish, who is back in New
Zealand visiting her sister, writes in
the video that she doesn’t want her
son to be part of the large percentage
of the transgender community who
suffer mental illness and self harm.
“We are not willing to let our child
become one of those statistics,” she
wrote.
The video has been viewed five
million times and shared by more
than 100,000 people.

Journey of a Transgender Child.
LET’S TALK ABOUT
The HIV Foundation Queensland
will be hosting a community forum
on 16 March to discuss PrEP - a new
HIV prevention method in which
people who do not have HIV take
a pill daily to reduce their risk of
contracting HIV.
PrEP treatment has been available
in the United States since 2012, and
despite some criticisms that it could
lead to unsafe promiscuity, the
treatment has thus far been shown to
be an effective method of prevention,
especially for HIV negative people
who are in relationships with a
positive partner, as well as other
people who are at high risk of
contracting HIV.
Ahead of a state wide QPrEP trial
commencing later this year, the
forum will be an opportunity to find
out more about PrEP and to find out
if it might be a suitable treatment
option for you. The evening will be
chaired by a panel of local Gp’s and
clinicians who will be on hand to
answer questions.
The Forum will be held 6:00pm
on Monday 16 March and will be
held upstairs at RAPID, 2 Winn
St, Fortitude Valley. While anyone
is welcome to just turn up on the
night, people interested in attending
are encouraged to RSVP to info@
hivfoundation.org.au or call 07 3054
6100
If you are unable to attend the forum
in person, you can log on to the
Online PrEP Forum on Facebook ‘Let’s talk about PrEP: Community
Forum’. Through this online forum,
people can lodge their question to be
answered both on the night and on
the forum.

What a cool idea!
Ice-cream brand Ben &
Jerry’s has joined forces
with Australian Marriage
Equality to turn up the heat
on the federal government
to
legalise
same-sex
marriage.
An iconic London phone
box, which has been given a
rainbow coloured makeover,
will feature in the Sydney
Mardi Gras Fair Day on
February 22.
Dubbed #EqualityCalling,
the initiative is a mass
voice-mail
campaign
which urges the public to
record messages supporting
gay marriage that will be
automatically delivered to
their federal representatives.
Those unable to attend the
Mardi Gras can leave their
messages of support on the
#EqualityCalling
hotline
number 1300 663 679.
Australian
Marriage
Equality
believes
the
campaign offers a pivotal
link between the government
and the public.
Kalli Swaik, a spokesperson
for Ben & Jerry’s Australia,
said the company is an
adamant supporter of the
cause.
“We’re immensely proud
to support an issue that
embodies so many of our
core values,” she said.
“It will give marriage equality
supporters a quick and easy
way to reach all their federal
representatives and it gives
us a way to publicly highlight
the substantial number
of contacts politicians are
receiving from constituents,”
AME national director
Rodney Croome said.
“We believe that everyone
in a loving relationship
should be able to celebrate
their commitment to each
other in marriage, regardless
of
gender
or
sexual
orientation.”
No-one needs a phone box
right now more than Prime
Minister Tony Abbott – a
Superman cape is about the
only hope he has of retaining
the highest political office in
the country.
Pink News reports that Ben
and Jerry’s is also renaming
its
iconic
ice-cream
flavour Chocolate Chip
CookieDough to “I DOugh,
I DOugh” so fans can also
show their support across
the country.
While there is no chance
of Mr Abbott joining the
queue to record a message
of support for marriage
equality, we can only hope
that he and every other
federal MP get the message
loud and clear.
An intimate image of a gay

Judges praised the image

Hosted by Mother Nature, the evening

identities from all venues, as well as
performances by some of Queensland’s
best loved performers from years gone by.
Shows will be held at 8, 9, 10 & 11pm with
all performers donating their services for
charity.
The first CWC cabaret was held all the way
back in 1989 to assist people living with
HIV/AIDS and has a reputation of being
one of those events that attracts both
venue regulars and those not involved in
“the scene”, providing a great opportunity
to mingle, catch up with old friends and
make new ones.

criminalises “propaganda

The image depicts Jon and
Alex, who the artist sees as
“a modern-day Romeo and

love but facing outside forces
who want to deny them their
feelings.
ENTERTAINMENT
WITH DRAGITUDE!
Even though the entertainment is
predominately centred around drag,
CWC has a long history of throwing up
all types of interesting and quirky acts.
When it comes to CWC cabarets, expect
the unexpected!

While speaking on the Jonathan

The Queen has never spoken

VILLAGE PEOPLE

AUSTRALIA
INVITED TO
EUROVISION
By Rod Gardiner
Who would ever have
thought – Olivia NewtonJohn representing Australia
at Eurovision?
Or perhaps Kylie Minogue,
AC/DC, Midnight Oil or Air
Supply.
That’s right, Australia, not
Austria.
SBS has confirmed Australia
has been granted a one-off
wild card entry in the final
stages of this year’s Eurovision
Song Contest in Austria.
As a guest artist, our very own
Jessica Mauboy wowed the
195 million global audience at
last year’s event in Denmark,
won by bearded lady Conchita
Wurst.
As Australia will this year
be an official competitor,
audience members with a +61
country code will be allowed
to vote for the first time, in
both semi-finals and the
grand final.
SBS secured the deal and said
the successful candidate to
represent Australia would be
selected and revealed soon.
“The deal is a result of
SBS’s ambition to increase
Australia’s
presence
at
Eurovision following the
success of Jessica Mauboy’s
performance last year in
Denmark,” an SBS statement
said.
“ Australia’s enthusiasm for
the contest has been embraced
by the European Broadcasting
Union and the 2015 host
broadcaster ORF who have
invited SBS to send an artist to
compete as a wild card entry
for 2015 in celebration of the
60th of the contest.
“SBS has been broadcasting
Eurovision for over 30
years and we have seen how
Australians’ love of the song
contest has grown during
those years.”
Executive
Supervisor
of
Eurovision Jon Ola Sand said,
on behalf of the EBU: “It’s a
daring and at the same time
incredibly exciting move.
“It is our way of saying; let’s
celebrate this party together!”
Time to dust of your construction helmet, cowboy hat or Indian
headdress because the kings of disco, the Village People are coming
to town this month!
Performing live at Eatons Hill Hotel on Sat 28 Feb, these gay icons
will be performing all of their biggest hits such as ‘In the Navy’, ‘Go
West’, ‘Macho Man’, ‘You Can’t Stop the Music’. And then there’s the
legendary ‘YMCA’ which we are told involves mandatory audience
participation (as if you wouldn’t want to join in!)

PURPLE
PURPLE
news for the girls
By Leah Watson
For years I have had a “love-hate” relationship with
my vulva, it has a large mound, large voluptuous lips
and can vary from being very bald to el natural depending on my energy level. The “hate” side of this
relationship could be the reaction from some sexual
partners… lesbians seem scared of it. My vulva is not
small, tucked away or quiet, as we have been led to believe is the only acceptable look. This has caused great
embarrassment for me, with new partners, always
wondering what the comment may be.
What I don’t understand is the need to have a “perfect”
vulva, to the point where more and more women are
getting labiaplasty to reduce the size of their labia (lips)
– WTF! Have we actually criticised each other so much
that we are sending our sapphic sisters under the knife?
I am saying HECK NO!!
FELLOW LESBIANS,
WILLL YOU JOIN THE
VULVA-LUTION?
10 | issue 371
www.qnews.com.au
We are lesbians, we often like to be different, we are
often inclined to feminist views and we generally love
the vagina. So, why are we so critical of what is between
our legs and the legs of the people we are sleeping with?
Shouldn’t it be nice to explore the folds and creases of a
beautiful, larger than life vulva just the same as a small,
tight one? Shouldn’t we want to rummage through a full
vulva of hair to find what’s underneath, just the same as
a bald one? Shouldn’t we be celebrating the diversity of
our vulvas and embracing our differences? How boring
would it be if we were all the same?
Today I am saying - My vulva is loud and out there and I
like it that way. My relationship with my vulva, and any
others that I may lay my hands on (*wink*), will now
be a plain as day “love” relationship – no hate. The next
time someone shies away from my vulva, it is simple,
they don’t deserve it, and they don’t deserve me.
I am starting a vulva-lution! Lesbians assemble and
bring your straight sisters too.
Who is with me?

CELEBRATING
THE BEAUTY
OF THE BODY
IN BYRON BAY
Two years ago, photographer John
Bortolin embarked on an artistic
journey which has now culminated
in the creation of ‘Manscape’,
a big and beautiful coffee-table
book combining and celebrating
the natural beauty of Northern
New South Wales and the male
physique.
“The incredible landscapes of the
Byron Bay shire in Australia, and
its surrounding areas, have always
inspired me,” Bortolin explained
to QNews. “The lush semi-tropical
hills, hidden creeks, and the sensual
lines of the blue and white coast.
“I am also an enormous admirer of
the male body, with its strength and
power. Yet, like any landscape it has
a certain vulnerability. I decided to
combine these passions in a large
format photography book as an
artistic celebration of these two
forms”
In many ways, while this book is
a celebration of all men, it is also
a tribute to each of these men
who generously participated with
their openness and willingness to
transform and become a work of art.
In a digital age that seems
determined to create an unrealistic
sense of perfection, Bortolin instead
celebrates the raw image through
traditional means.
I’m an ‘old school’ photographer
who trained on a film camera. Some
of the images were taken on a 1965
model Mamiya C33 medium format
6x6cm film camera. These square
format images feature in the centre
of the book. They have a texture and
grain that digital technology doesn’t
necessarily allow, revealing a raw
beauty. Mother Nature has the best
attributes for these outdoor shots
and I didn’t need to interfere. The
light is all natural.

NBOMe is a NO-Brainer... Stay away
from this dangerous new drug!
By Dr Fiona Bisshop
You may have heard of a drug
called NBOMe, also known as
25I or Cimbi-5. You may even
have been offered it at a club or
gig with promises of a wildly fun
hallucinogenic trip, like a cheaper
version of LSD. It’s sold as either a
liquid which you put in your nose
or mouth, or on blotting paper
which is held under the tongue.
This drug is actually a derivative
of phenethylamine, and acts on
the 5HT2A receptor in the human
brain. It is incredibly potent and its
effects can be severe. It promises
hallucinations and feelings of
euphoria. Let’s have a think about
that. Hallucinations actually mean
seeing and hearing things that
aren’t actually there - things that
can be quite scary or even frankly
terrifying. People have died from
running into trees and traffic whilst
trying to escape a hallucinogenic
apparition, and there is a case
Dr Fiona Bisshop specialises in LGBT health and writes courtesy of Holdsworth House Medical Centre.
of someone who took this drug
thinking they could fly and ended
up jumping to their death from a
tall building.
Users can experience fast heart rate,
hyperthermia, confusion, nausea
and vomiting, paranoia, panic,
muscle stiffening, seizures and
death. There have actually been
a number of deaths in Australia
clearly caused by this drug. It
is very easy to overdose on it,
especially in the liquid form, as it is
so strong, and its effects can last up
to 12 hours.
This drug can cause a severe
and potentially life-threatening
situation called serotonin syndrome
if combined with common
antidepressants. You really don’t
want this to happen to you! Oh and
it’s explicitly banned in QLD and
NSW so possession of it will land
you a police charge. A few good
reasons to stay away
from this one, I believe!

HAVE YOU
HEARD OF
SHIGELLA?
There has been a
recent spike in Shigella
infections in Brisbane
recently with men who
have sex with men
(MSM). Shigella is a
bacterial infection that
is easily spread by poo
particles entering the
mouth.
Should I be worried?
While Shigella is not
considered a Sexually
Transmitted Infection,
it is easily passed
between MSM and left
untreated can cause
severe
infection.
In
particular, people living
with HIV (PLHIV) are
at risk of a more severe
infection. The duration
of infectiousness can
be
greatly
reduced
with antibiotics and
keeping hydrated is also
important for treatment.
How will I know if I have
Shigella?
You may have diarrhoea,
fever, nausea, vomiting
and stomach cramps,
or you may have no
symptoms at all. Shigella
is generally passed on

by unwashed hands
and can be as easy as
food contamination or
chewing
fingernails.
However MSM are at a
higher risk of Shigella
through oral-anal sexual
behaviours like rimming.
Symptoms
usually
present 1 – 3 days after
exposure and usually last
for 4 – 7 days. Your GP
should be able to tell you
if you have Shigella.
If I have Shigella what
should I do?
If you are diagnosed with
Shigella, the infection
can still be passed on to
others, so:
• Wash your hands after
using the bathroom,
having sex and before
eating or preparing
food
• Avoid
communal
baths, spas and saunas
for at least 48 hours
after the symptoms

During sex:
• use a dam or condom

To prevent Shigella,

GAY STARS AND THEIR

FAMILIES
RUBY ROSE
For many of us in the LGBT community, our pets are like our children and are
an integral part of our families. They offer love, companionship and unwavering
support no matter what so it is little wonder that LGBT celebrities who work
amongst the fickleness of show business love their pets so much! QNews would
like to introduce you to the four legged members of some of our community’s most
famous families.
Ruby Rose has always stood out from the
crowd and tried to be a little bit different
so it is little wonder that in finding a pet,
the Aussie star chose something a little less
ordinary. Meet Hazel, the gorgeous black
and white pig that lives Rose and her fiance
Phoebe Dahl. And just like her mamma
Ruby, Hazel is a star in her own right with a
huge online following on social media.
ELTON JOHN
DARREN HAYES
Elton John loves his companion Arthur so
much that he even brings him on television
talk shows, but that just the beginning of it!
When Elton and his now husband David
had a civil union ceremony back in 2005,
Arthur the cocker spaniel served as best
man, and would later receive a musical
credit on Elton’s Album The Captain and
the Kid for providing ‘woof bells’.
Darren Hayes on had a hit single called
the ‘Animal Song’ and anyone who follows
Darren on any type of social media
platform knows that he and his pooch
Wally are inseparable. As a kid Darren also
had a pet snake named Dog and a pet dog
named Snake, however one day Snake ate
Dog (the dog ate the snake). Sounds like
Darren’s pets really did live in a savage
garden!
GRAHAM NORTON
Graham Norton’s ex boyfriend Trevor
Patterson once told the Daily Mail that their
relationship was too crowded, claiming that
‘There were four of us in the partnership.’
Patterson was referring to Norton’s two
dogs, a labradoodle called Bailey and a
terrier called Madge.
ELLEN DeGENERES
Ellen DeGeneres has long been known as an
animal lover and features a regular segment
on her show dedicated to pet heroes. She
and wife Portia De Rossi have a number of
pets themselves but one cute little little fella
seems to get all the attention – meet Woof,
who Ellen described to People magazine as:
“kind of a poodle-Maltese mix and he’s a
rescue off of the street.”
JESSE TYLER FERGUSON
Jesse Tyler Ferguson really is part of a
modern family. Together with husband
Justin Mikita, Ferguson has a morkie
named Leaf who was named after Leaf
Coneybear, a character that Ferguson
played in the Broadway production of ‘The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling
Bee”. The couple described Leaf as a
“starter baby” to People magazine when
asked if they wanted to be parents. Leaf is
a recent puppy school graduate after being
sent to puppy bootcamp because he liked to
bark too much.
JODIE FOSTER
Jodie Foster has a life long fear of cats
after being attacked and briefly carried
by a lion while filming on the set of
Disney’s Napoleon and Samantha in 1972.
Understandably she’s more of a dog person
and has an adorable golden retriever names
Spinee. Foster and her four legged friend
are very close and when Spinee underwent
major surgery earlier this month, Foster
reached out to Twitter for support. “May I
ask one favor? My dog Spinee needs your
prayers,” she Tweeted in. “She just came out
of a difficult surgery 20 minutes ago … She
is my beloved.” Foster has been giving regular updates on Spinee’s condition and is
clearly grateful for the support. “With prayers like this I feel confident Spinee will be
fine,” she wrote. “Thank you more than you will ever know.”

She shocked and delighted her

with Katy Perry at this year’s
Super Bowl halftime show, and
now AWOL rap icon Missy Elliott
has revealed she’s back in the
studio.
“I’m actually going down to be
with

in and get some work done,” Elliott
told US radio station SiriusXM.
“I don’t want to say too much,
because in this day and time you
say something, and they will come
back two weeks later like ‘Um,
where your album at?’”
Missy tweeted a photo of her and
Timbaland in the studio, but dance
producer Diplo went one better and
shared snippets of Missy’s vocals on
a new song, “Take U There”, that he
produced with dubstep vanguard
Skrillex under their supergroup
moniker Jack U.
In 2008, Missy was diagnosed with
Graves disease, an autoimmune
disorder that affects the thyroid,
and she has said she now manages
the condition with diet and
exercise.
“Work It” and “Lose Control” saw
the three songs jump back onto
the US iTunes charts, according to
Billboard.com.
An emotional Missy said she was
surprised by the reception years
after she was forced to leave the
spotlight.
“Tbh I didn’t realize how much
I was missed til last night,” she
tweeted. “I’m crying y’all 4give me

Proving once and for all that no-one knows her people
better, Madonna teamed up with Grindr to give
lucky fans a one-on-one Q&A via the hookup app on
Valentine’s Day.
All the five lucky winners had to do to was take a break
from chatting to Grindr’s spambots, wrap their head in
black wire to recreate her new album Rebel Heart’s cover
shot and post it as their profile picture with the hashtag
#LivingForLove as their headline. Instant promo!
But the Grindr gab is just one cog in the wheel of the
#UnaplogeticBitch’s relentless promo tour... earlier this
month Madonna flashed her black thong on this year’s
Grammy’s red carpet before thrilling the audience inside
with her onstage Illuminati Minotaur ritual set to the tune
of Rebel Heart’s lead single “Living For Love.”
A few days prior, Madonna snubbed YouTube to premiere
her music video for “Living For Love” on popular picture
messaging app Snapchat.
Rebel Heart is still set for a March 10 release, despite the
catastrophic leaks online of all of the album’s songs which
threw eager fans into a quandary over whether or not to
listen. Team Madonna responded by rush-releasing a
number of the tracks early.

MUSIC
AND THE WINER IS ...SAM SMITH (X4)
By Rod Gardiner
If he wasn’t already there, four gongs
at the Grammys made Sam Smith a
superstar overnight.
And that can only be good for the LGBT
community.
Releasing his new Lay Me Down video,
Smith says he plans to use his platform as
one of the most visible, publicly out gay
men in music.
“A lot of people have said before that
I don’t want to be a spokesperson for
the gay community, and that’s very
false,” Smith told MTV red carpet
correspondents Christina Garibaldi and
Todrick Hall at the 57th Annual Grammy
Awards on Sunday.
“Hopefully, I showed that when I put out
the Lay Me Down video.”
The moving video, shot in one take in a
South East London church, sees Smith
standing at the altar at his husband’s
funeral, while mourning family and
friends sit behind him holding candles.
Halfway through, the clip flashes to their
joyous wedding in the same church, with
everyone smiling and clapping, before
returning to a melancholy Smith sitting
alone on a pew.
Posting a message on Instagram, Smith
wrote: “Dear all, the Lay Me Down music
video holds a very dear place in my heart.
“With this video, myself and Ryan Hope
the director have decided to make a
statement and showcase something we
passionately believe in.
“This video shows my dreams that one day
gay men and women and transgendered
men and women all over the world, like
all our straight families and friends, will
be able to get married under any roof, in
any city, in any town, in any village, in
any country.
“I hope you enjoy it. I love you all.”
Smith recently revealed that his debut
album In The Lonely Hour is about
unrequited love.
The album proved a huge success on both
sides of the Atlantic, making the 22-yearold the only artist to shift more than one
million copies in the US and the UK last
year.
Since then he’s had a brief relationship
with model Jonathan Zeizel which ended
in January.
Smith told MTV that his latest Lay Me
Down video is his future.
“That’s what I want to do. I want to get
married, and — well, I don’t want my
husband to die,” he said.
“I want to get married, and it was
important for me to make a statement.”

THE TEN MOST
Flamboyant
GAY CELEBRITIES OF ALL TIME
#1 Liberace
There is flamboyant and then there is
Liberace! Born in 1919 in a working class
area of Milwaulee, Wisconsin to immigrant
parents, Władziu Valentino Liberace may
have humble beginnings but this child
prodigy pianist would go on to become
the highest paid entertainer in the world,
and not to mention the most fabulous and
flamboyant entertainer of all time! Known
as Mr Showmanship, Liberace was famous
for his countless over the top costumes,
excessively long fur coats, his mirror ball
styled Rolls Royce, and expensive rings on
each finger. Even off stage Liberace’s life
was the epitome of flamboyant excess; His
mansions were famously decadent; and his
love life was the stuff of scandalous court
cases and tabloid rumours for decades. Sadly
Liberace died of an AIDS related illness in
1987.
and in 1984 famously performed I Want
to Break Free in full drag. He was known
for leading a decadent and hedonistic
lifestyle, however, became reclusive in
the last few years of his life. Mercury
revealed the world that he had AIDS one
day before his death in 1991.
#4 Oscar Wilde
(Pictured Above) Queen Victoria’s
England in the later half of the 19th
Century is synonymous with social
conservatism and repressed sexuality.
That is, of course, unless your name is
Oscar Wilde! Wrtiter, poet and all round
fabulous dandy Oscar Wilde was witty,
charming, and one of the best known
personalities of his day. At the height
of his success, Wilde was embroiled in
a very public and scandalous court case
with the Marquess of Queensberry who
was the father of Wilde’s young male
lover. The end result saw Wilde being
found guilty of ‘gross indecency with
other men’ and imprisoned for 2 years.
#2 Elton John
Elton John is not just one of the most
successful singers in musical history having
sold more than 300 million records over his
five decade career but he is known around the
world for his lavish lifestyle and some of the
best stage costumes ever seen. Crazy glasses,
feather trimmed jackets, and platform shoes
were how it started in the 70s and by the 90s
Elton was getting around in full baroque
brilliance a la Louis XIV of France with a wig
so big that he needed special arrangement to
help him put on the headpiece.
#3 Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury is the very definition
of a superstar. As the front man for
British glam rock group Queen, Mercury
was highly theatrical and adorned in
everything from lycra to leather on stage
18 | issue 371
www.qnews.com.au
#5 Boy George
The 1980s was all about flamboyance
but even in the crazy world of pop
music, Boy George stood out. As the
lead singer of Culture Club, Boy George
was known for his androgynous, gender
bending appearance which pushed the
boundaries of an unsuspecting public.
In the years after Culture club Boy
George remained in tehe public eye for
his drug addictions and conviction for
false imprisonment of a male prostitute.
He has since turned his life around and
now DJs around the world including at
last year’s Big Gay Day at the Wickham
Hotel.
#6 Julian Clary
#9 Rudolf Nureyev
#7 David Bowie
#10 Adam Lambert
Comedian Julian Clary is pretty out
there. Sporting an empasised campness,
outragous costumes Clary aimed to
shock audiences by saying and doing
thing that audiences didn’t thin
anybody could say or do. In the 1990s,
British newspaper The Sun launched a
campaign to have Clary banned from
television after he made jokes about
fisting. Audiences, however, loved him
all the more for it, even voting him as
the winner of the 2012 Celebrity Big
Brother.
OK so Bowie isn’t gay, he’s bisexual but
we will include him on the list anyway.
Bowie and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust
spearheaded the glam rock era and can
be credited with bringing camp glamour
to the mainstream. Since that time Bowie
has reinvented himself a number of
times with each new Bowie incarnation
becoming a style icon. Marriages to
super models and rumoured affairs
with Mick Jagger have also added to his
flamboyant mystique
#8 Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol never looked very
flamboyant, in fact, he looked somewhat
dull and unassuming. The life that he
led, however, was anything but. Warhol
has become the face of pop art and his
life’s work seemed dedicated to both
celebrating and satirizing the dizzying
world of celebrity and all things popular
and glamourous. Warhol’s New York
studio was known as ‘The Factory’ and
was home to lavish parties attended
by the city’s wealthiest socialites and
celebrities.
One of the finest dancers the world has
ever know, ballet star Rudolf Nureyev
defected from the Soviet Union to the
West in 1961 where he was he felt he had
more opportunities both professionally
and personally. Known for being a bit
precious, Nureyev was prone to temper
tantrums at a whim but was able to
calm himself while partying with the
likes of Gore Vidal , Freddie Mercury
, Jackie Kennedy Onassis , Mick Jagger
, Liza Minnelli , Andy Warhol .
Adam Lambert might still be relatively
new to the public eye compared to
the others on the list, however he
has achieved a lot in a short period.
Winner of American Idol, Lambert has
revived glam rock in recent years with
his out loud and proud theatrical and
androgynous performance style. So
impressed with his stage presence, the
surviving members of Queen invited
Lambert to take on arguably the toughest
assignment in music – trying to fill the
shoes of the late Freddie Mercury as part
of Queen’s world tour. Lambert took up
the challenge an received critical acclaim
for his efforts honouring Mercury while
maintaining his own style.

If you happen to be one of the tens
of thousands of city commuters
going Brisbane
back and forth Central
station daily, you might have
noticed a little takeaway/microcafe on the corner of Adelaide and
Edward Streets called Nigi Nigi. A
standout among the CBD’s sushi
shops, they offer quality fast food
that’s fantastic value for money at
a highly convenient spot.
There’s a good range of traditional
and fusion-style maki sushi rolls,
although what Japanese expats and
foreign students really hanker for
are their well-made onigiri: parcels
of salted rice shaped into oval or
triangular shapes, filled with salty or
tangy ingredients like pickled plum
and mashed salted salmon, and
wrapped in nori. A quintessential
takeaway
food
traditionally
prepared by housewives for their
children to take to school, it’s the
Japanese analog to the vegemite
sandwich. Discerning Japanophiles
might notice a lack of finesse with
the preparation work that goes into
their sashimi, but we can’t fault the
quality and freshness of the fish,
and it’s a bargain from about $8 per
pack.
Lunch specials include items like
bento set meals and noodle soups.
Try the kitsune udon, udon noodles
and sweetened fried tofu parcels in a
clean-tasting dashi-based (seaweed
and dried fish shavings) soup that
is so wholesome, it slurps down
like a dream. During the colder
months they will put an oden stand
at the shopfront, offering a variety
of skewered foods ($1-$2.50 each)
simmered in a light broth as well as
steamed buns and dumplings. The
staff also tend to offer happy hour
deals or clearance prices for their
sushi after 5pm. If you’re the people

Secret recipes, illustration and creation by Steve Anderssen
This is one of my most treasured recipes because of its popularity
among the local house wives in our street, in the 1980’s.I originally
was given this recipe by my mother, who got it from my aunty, or
perhaps it came from Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Rimmer, Mrs. Sutton and
Mrs. Welsh who regularly swapped recipes with our family. In
2010, it has become a cafe favourite around the country.
METHOD
1. Set up a hot water bath or a ‘double boiler’ i.e. a large
pot or saucepan, ½ full with hot water, with a large
metal or glass bowl on top of it. It is important that
the bowl is big enough to stop steam or water getting
into it.
2. Place the copha, condensed milk and raspberry
extract in the top of the double boiler and allow it to
melt slowly as the water simmers. Don’t let the water
boil.
3. Meanwhile, chop the glace cherries, either by hand,
or in the blender. Try to leave a few course chunks
in it. Remember to leave 25 cherries for decoration!
Carefully gather all the cherries into a large mixing
bowl using a wooden spoon or rubber spatula. Every
little bit counts so scrape the blender, being careful of
the blades.
4. Add the coconut and the bran and mix the
Ingredients. When the copha has melted, add both
mixtures but be careful of steam and water on the
underside of the bowl. When all ingredients are
mixed thoroughly, leave it to cool on the bench for
10 minutes.
• 67 g of copha
5. Line a couple of trays with aluminium foil, shiny
side up .You will also need a bowl of clean cold water
to wash your hands in. Roll the mixture into balls and
regularly wet your palms to avoid sticking. Place the
balls on the trays a 4 cm apart and then refrigerate for
30 minutes or until firm.
6. Set up a hot water bath or a ‘double boiler’ again.
This time for melting the chocolate. Make sure no
water or steam gets into your clean bowl of chocolate,
otherwise it will be impossible to work with. Heat the
chocolate gradually until it is smooth and silky and
then add a teaspoon of vegetable oil. This will thin
it down and make it set softer when set. If you wish,
you can also melt chocolate in the microwave but
not in a glass bowl. It is important not to overheat the
chocolate, so heat in increments of 30 seconds ,while
stirring in between until smooth.
7. Use a ‘slotted spoon’ to dip the balls in the chocolate.
Drain the excess chocolate of each ball and return it
to the foil lined tray. While the chocolate is still wet,
decorate each ball with a single cherry and allow
them to set overnight in the fridge.
• ½ a tin of condensed
milk (200 g)
• ¼ teaspoon of
raspberry extract
(optional) I could only
find strawberry extract
which smells like drops
of heaven
• 125 g desiccated
coconut (or shredded)
• 4 cups of all bran
(twigs, toasted or raw
flakes)
• 500 g of glace cherries
(2 x 200g packs ...plus
an extra ½ pack (100 g)
for decoration)
• 250g of dark chocolate
• 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

REVIEW
WHAT WE
DID ON OUR
HOLIDAY
Review by Peter Gray Rated PG
Life, death and family; the three seem
to co-exist quite frequently when put
together onscreen, and ‘What We
Did On Our Holiday’ is no exception.
Wonderfully British and ever-sobittersweet, this comedy of errors
focuses on separated couple Abi and
Doug (Rosamund Pike and David
Tennant), whose current relationship
woes need little explaining with their
three forthright children acting as a
window into their situation.
Preparing to travel from London to
Scotland to celebrate Doug’s father
Gordie’s (Billy Connolly) 75th birthday,
potentially his last due to ailing health,
the bickering duo need to do their best
to play happy family to keep the peace
– something near impossible with a trio
of children seemingly incapable of not
telling the truth.
One of those films that adopts a sitcomlike premise and manages to stretch it to
feature length, and thankfully succeeds,
‘What We Did On Our Holiday’ grounds
its outlandish humour and situations
in heart and honesty, allowing us to
observe our own lives in the process.
After terrifying males the world over
with her striking turn in last year’s
‘Gone Girl’, Pike proves she can play
lovely just as well, although it’s hard
not to feel cautious when her character
starts getting angry at Tennant and
you want to scream at him to run for
the hills. Connolly is, as expected, a
delight as he infuses Gordie with pearls
of wisdom that are never without a touch
of impertinent humour, and the children
prove an absolute treat, behaving like
real children without bordering on
precociousness.
As the movie season unwinds from
Oscar-bait overload and some little
movie called ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, it’s
a treat to know that there’s something
genuinely enjoyable on offer that won’t
make you think too hard, react too
strongly or cause a fuss. It’s simple, it’s
light, it’s utterly charming and it makes
you wish that every family dysfunction
could be solved so entertainingly.

PERFORMING ARTS
A VERY DIFFERENT YET
DELIGHTFUL DREAM
HOT, DELICIOUS,
AND SUBVERSIVELY
GLAMOROUS
Following their highly successful
international
collaborations,
Melbourne based performer Jessi
Lewis will once again team with
Lismore’s award winning artist
Ana Wojak in a new work to be
staged in Brisbane’s New Globe
Theatre.
The pair will present ‘Crossfade’,
a collaborative exploration into
dress ups, gender, transgression,
the roles we assume and those
which are thrust upon us. In a
contemporary world obsessed with
appearances and the superficial, it
works with costume as a stimulus
from which layered vocabularies
of movement and image emerge, to
be presented in a narrative of rich
episodic tableaux.
La Boite theatre’s new production of
Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream
is equal parts weird, hilarious, and brilliant.
Given a retro suburban Australian setting
rather than Athens and its surrounding forests,
this production has managed to stay true to all
of the themes that have made this play a timeless
classic, while at the same time injecting it with a
healthy dose of dark humour and a pinch of all
things peculiar.
While there has been no shortage of ‘Shakespeare
with a modern twist’ gracing theatres around the
country in recent years achieving varying degrees
of success, Director Benjamin Schostakowski,
has been able to successfully navigate that fine
line between respecting the original text and
bringing to life a genuinely unique and engaging
creation which will delight audiences regardless
of whether it is their first or fiftieth time
experiencing this band of young lovers, budding
thespians, and naughty fairies.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is now playing at La
Boite Theatre until 7 March. Tickets are available
via www.laboite.com.au or call 3007 8600.
Promising
something
hot,
delicious,
and
subversively
glamorous, Crossfade highlights
the commonality between these
uniquely different artists, creating
a through line that assumes
a deeper connection which
ultimately binds this performance.
Crossfade will be staged Thursday
24 March at the New Globe Theatre,
122 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley.
