The group promotes the collection, documentation and awareness of Brisbane’s LGBT history by providing suppor t for Gay & Lesbian Archives at the Queensland State Library as well as presenting events, exhibitions and other activities. Group member Eliot Rifkin told QNews that one of the projects the group is currently focusing on is to record the histories of Brisbane’s par ty venues and meeting places and in par ticular, people’s personal experiences. “The fun times of our bar communities hasn’t been documented and we’re interviewing people (audio only) collecting stories and pictures from the 1930s to date,” Rifkin explained. “All stories are welcome.” “We would love people to get involved to help us increase LGBT people’s sense of community history and identity by joining or contributing to the History Action Group.” By Toby Longhurst Some of the group’s ongoing projects are: OR AL HISTORIES –people are interviewed and their stories are transcribed, edited and then lodged in the State Library of Queensland repository. Many interviews need to be conducted, transcribed and edited. (Training is available.) DIGITAL STORIES- people’s photos are uploaded to BCC’s PlaceStories site. Social photos at bars like the Terminus, Hacienda, Options…, historical events like rallies as well as events such as Sleaze Ball. Most pictures pre-2000 are welcome. We can digitise your photos and they may be held at the State Library archive. OTHER PROJECTS: Website Design/Management, Blogging/Newslet ter writing, Project/Event Management (past events include: Museum Exhibitions, Priscilla Bus Tour and Forums). The group provides free interviewing training and meet once a month. Independent Queensland MP Rob Messenger has vowed to introduce a private member’s bill to repeal civil unions in Queensland. The Member for Burnet t has released a draf t version of the bill on his website and has promised to introduce it to Parliament should he be re-elected. “If re-elected, I will present my Civil Union Repeal Bill to the new parliament and will ask that Mr. Newman put aside his personal suppor t for gay marriage and allow a conscience vote for all LNP members,” Mr. Messenger said. Unlike LNP Leader Campbell Newman who has previously said that he would not repeal the Civil Unions Act if one couple had registered and formalised their union, Messenger said that he would aim to repeal the Act regardless of how many couple may had already held a civil union ceremony. National PFLAG Spokesperson Shelley Argent was one of the leading proponents that saw civil unions introduced in Queensland and believes that Messenger’s proposed bill is unnecessary and cruel. “This at tempt to repeal the legislation makes no sense,” Argent said. Everybody was given a conscience vote when the Civil Unions Bill was passed including Mr. Messenger, and the LNP chose to vote as a block against it. Nobody has been af fected negatively as a result of this legislation going through so there is reason to change it.” RIP & ROLL CAMPAIGN Argent’s views are shared by leading LGBT psychologist Paul Mar tin who hold concerns for the ef fect that such a move might play on the mental health of Queensland’s LGBT community “When the Civil Union Act passed same-sex at tracted Queenslanders finally had a sense that they are valued and their relationships validated,” Mar tin said. “If Mr. Messenger is successful, and the legislation is repealed, this will send a power ful message to many vulnerable people that their relationships are wor thless.” Ray Mackereth, Publisher of QNews, was also at the forefront of the push for civil unions and was keen to add his voice to the outcry against Messenger’s proposed move. “This is a hear tless political stunt where a politician puts himself before his constituents,” Mackereth said. “There is an estimated 366,00 gay & lesbian community members living in this state and Messenger is showing a complete lack of respect to every one of them. To allow gay couples to be protected by civil unions like straight Queenslanders enjoy, is essential. Civil unions mean under circumstances of hospitalisation, life threatening decisions and death that par tners can legally make those decisions the same as anyone else. To rip those protections away from couples is unconscionable and unnecessary” The date that Queenslanders can commence civil unions remains unclear but it is expected to be sometime in the first quarter of 2012. DECLARED ‘IMPORTANT PUBLIC MESSAGE’ By Bonnie Gardiner It’s official, The Healthy Communities Rip & Roll Ad Campaign has become the most complained about advertisement in Australia for the year 2011. Oh... and just for good measure, a second Rip & Roll ad also made the top ten. The safe sex ads caused a furore when they were removed following complaints from the Australian Christian Lobby. The ACL however weren’t expecting the massive public backlash that followed and saw the adds reinstated and additional billboards go up. The original ad that caused all of the controversy saw 222 of ficial complaints made to the Adver tising Standards Board, but that number was dwar fed by the thousands of people who signed petitions demanding that the ads be put back Despite the complaints, the Adver tising Standards Board rejected calls for it to be banned, saying it communicated an impor tant public safety message. “It’s considered that while some members of the community would prefer not to see this issue adver tised, the public health message overrides any social sensitivity,” said Fiona Jolly, ASB chief executive. While unveiling the 10 most complained about ads of the year, only four of the complaints were upheld, with the remainder judged not of fensive or carrying an impor tant social message. There are currently four new members being sought to join the existing six members. ABBOTT ON CONSCIENCE VOTE The Round Table was formed in 2010 and meets in person three times a year in addition to monthly teleconferences, with members working collaboratively to identify activities that can improve the lives of LGBTI Queenslanders, their families and the broader community. In 2012,the Round Table aims to focus on identifying actions that address the following priority issues: suicide and self-harm; stigma and discrimination; engagement with community services; consultation with LGBTI communities; community infrastructure mapping. A selection panel will consider the appointment of people best able to represent the interests of their LGBTI communities, with preference given to meritorious applicants who identify as intersex, bisexual, youth, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community, as these population groups are not currently represented To apply for membership on the LGBTI Round Table, applicants are required to complete an application package and forward to the department by Monday 23 January 2012. For more information and access to application forms, please contact Kurt Maroske, Acting Senior Project Officer, Communit y Participation Programs, Department of Communities on 3405 0786; or email LGBT@communities.qld.gov.au UN CALLS FOR AN END TO GAY KILLINGS By Peter Gray “It was the clear policy of the Coalition at the election that marriage was between a man and a woman.’’ That was Tony Abbot t’s straight-thinking statement on the eve of a shadow cabinet meeting where he put forward that no conscience vote should take place on the subject of same-sex marriage. Abbot t’s view cer tainly isn’t winning him any favours within the par ty room with moderates arguing that the par ty has never denied a conscience vote granted to Labor. Not allowing a conscience vote on the mat ter is also going against the estimated 57% of Australians who suppor t the legalisation of same-sex unions. 8 out of 10 Coalition voters (81% to be more precise) have pledged their suppor t for a conscience vote and up to 90% from the Greens. During his campaign, Abbot t has repeatedly made statements about marriage being between a man and a woman and although he initially said that the same-sex bill would be discussed nex t year when it is introduced to parliament. He now says the Coalition will reaf firm the position they held prior to the last election that marriage is between a man and a woman. With him put ting his authority on the line, making it impossible for the shadow cabinet or par ty room to say they want a conscience vote, Mr Abbot t seems to be doing all he can to make sure this bill doesn’t go ahead, but could his prejudice just be highlighting his backward thinking to the point where it persuades even more people to get behind a vote for gay marriage? HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR LGBT YOUTH The U.N.’s top human rights official urged countries to abolish legal discrimination against gays, including the death penalty for consensual sex, days after the U.S. government said it would use foreign aid and diplomacy to promote gay equal rights. The first ever United Nations repor t on the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people details how around the world people are killed or endure hate-motivated violence, tor ture, detention, criminalisation and discrimination in jobs, health care and education because of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. The repor t, released by the UN Of fice for the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, outlines “a pat tern of human rights violations… that demands a response,” and says governments have too of ten overlooked violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The High Commissioner also calls on countries to ensure that no one fleeing persecution because of their sexual orientation or gender identity is returned to a territory where their life or freedom is at threat, and that asylum laws recognise that sexual orientation or gender identity is a valid basis for claiming persecution. In 76 countries it remains illegal to engage in same-sex conduct and in at least five countries – Iran, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Yemen – the death penalty prevails. Want to make a difference in the lives of young people? If you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, queer, intersex, or sistergirl and want to give back to the community? Expanded Horizons/QSPACE are currently seeking mentors and volunteers to support LGBTQIS young people on the Gold Coast and are in preparations for a volunteer training day. and volunteers will receive comprehensive training regarding knowledge and skills to best suppor t LGBTQIS young people with a training session to run early on Sat 3rd March 2012 (9:30am-4:30pm). To see QSPACE in action, it is as simple as checking out their recently launched youtube clip that takes one through the experience of a newcomer’s tour through QSPACE. The video can be viewed by visiting www.youtube. com and searching ‘QSpace Introduction Tour.’ “Expanded Horizons/QSPACE are currently seeking mentors and volunteers to suppor t LGBTQIS young people” One of the programs run by Expanded Horizons in need of volunteers is QSPACE - an open group drop in located in Southpor t for 13-17 year olds that are same sex at tracted or questioning their sexuality or gender identity. Our proud Queenslander Dr Wendell Rosevear who volunteers for and champions many wor thwhile causes within Queensland’s LGBT community took time out to paint a symbolic work of ar t for the Morcombes who lost their son Daniel many years ago. As you are no doubt aware, Daniel’s body was located earlier this year and hopefully this will help bring some solace to his family and friends. Wendell works to help prevent abuse and volunteers with several groups and his significant gesture to the Morcombes was well received. Over the years the family has By Natalie Brown Lady Gaga sees herself as a “pop version” Princess Diana and fears that she may suf fer the same tragic fate as the former Princess of Wales who died in 1997 af ter being hounded by the paparazzi. Despite making millions from singing about the paparazzi, it seems all Gaga wants for Christmas is for them to get of f her back! Gaga’s friends say that the singer is obsessed with Lady Di, whom she has labelled a ‘mar tyr for fame.’ Her fixation on the late Princess has provided fodder for many of her songs, and of ten even inspiration for her bizarre fashion sense with Gaga seeing herself as a 21st-century incarnation of her. The idea for her hit song ‘Paparazzi’, about the perils of fame, was inspired by Lady Diana and stemmed from her belief that Diana’s fame is what led to her death. Her highly anticipated new song, which was played for a select group of guests recently, is said to be about the same subject mat ter, which haunts Gaga, even in her dreams. She has genuine fears that she will die the same way as Diana, or ‘at the hands of some crazy,’ like many other celebrities. 10 | issue 289 www.qnews.com.au received many gif ts from friends and strangers which they usually donate for auction and raf fle to raise money for their foundation that promotes child safety - the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. They were touched by this painting and told Wendell they would like to keep it as a reminder of the peace that Daniel has now found. OUR GOLDEN BOY IS BACK! By Bonnie Gardiner Aussie diving champion Matthew Mitcham is geared up for the upcoming London Olympics despite a long term injury sustained in April last year. After some serious considerations the diver is confident he would still qualify. The diver has only been back in action for a few weeks af ter months of intense rehabilitation and again proves his determination af ter his gold medal in the 2008 Beijing games came af ter years bat tling depression and anxiety. Mitcham has taken the first step towards his goal at the national championships in Adelaide this week where he won the10m plat form without agrivating his injury. “The dives that have the most loading on my abs I’ve had to scale down because I’m still suf fering from pain... I don’t want any thing to jeopardise my chances of winning a gold medal in London.” We know we’ll be rooting for Mitcham as he soldiers on as both an outstanding Australian athlete and a popular gay role model, being one of Australia’s first openly gay spor tsmen to compete in the Olympics. He is also an advocate for gay pride and equality in the spor ts arena... and all the while, looking damn fine in his Speedos. Go Mat thew! JUST HOW MUCH DO WE DISLIKE RICK PERRY? By Peter Gray When it comes to the ‘dislike’ feature on YouTube, it’s hard to think there’s someone out there who is more hated than Justin Bieber or Rebecca Black (she of ‘Friday’ frame) - but the pint-sized poppets can rest assured knowing the world’s internet users harbour much more distain for Rick Perry - a Republican presidential candidate who has seen his ad campaign go viral for all the wrong reasons. The Texas governor, hoping to pip Obama at the post in the nex t round of elections, has put together a video entitled ‘Strong’ where he blasts homosexuals for being able to serve in the military, but finds it wrong that children can’t openly celebrate Christmas in school. Cour t, who won 24 Grand Slams and 62 majors, is a staunch Christian and in a recent interview with the West Australian, she made very clear her views that homosexuality is a choice and an “abominable” practice. “Politically correct education has master fully escor ted homosexuality out from behind closed doors, into the community openly and now is aggressively demanding marriage rights that are not theirs to take, Cour t said.” “To dismantle this sole definition of marriage and try to legitimise what God calls abominable sexual practices that include sodomy, reveals our ignorance as to the ills that come when society is forced to accept law that violates their very own God-given nature of what is right and what is wrong,” King and Navratilova, who have both been very open about their sexuality for decades were quick to return serve. “Seems to me a lot of people have evolved, as has the Bible. Unfor tunately, Margaret Cour t has not,” Navratilova told TennisChannel. com “Her myopic view is truly frightening as well as damaging to the thousands of children already living in same-gender families. NEW YEARS By Dr Fiona Bisshop REFLECTIONS By Paul Martin It is quite amazing what you can achieve when you use the act of reflection and I’m not talking about checking yourself out in the mirror. In my early 20’s, I spent half a day imagining I was 90 years old, looking back at my life and thought of what I was proud of having done and what I regretted. This changed the course of my life forever. New Year is the per fect time to reflect and it can include an audit as to what your year was like, how you developed as a person, what your goals are for the year coming up and what you need to do to continue to keep evolving. The act of journaling is a power ful way to reflect and includes writing about your thoughts, feelings, insights, action plans and learnings. You can star t writing down questions such as: ‘what were my major achievements, what is blocking me from growing as a person, what are the areas I need to develop fur ther, how to overcome my weaknesses.’ It’s impor tant to include stuf f that you don’t feel comfor table writing down and to be as brutally honest as possible. The more open you are with yourself, the more likely it is that you’ll get more out of it. Sometimes people avoid writing down the truth as it can be confronting and anxiety provoking. The reality is that once you confront something and have an action plan as to how to deal with it, it no longer controls you. The old adage that it’s the journey not the destination that counts is true and the method of reflection can mean you spend more time doing what is fulfilling on the camp voyage of life. Some fitness activities or instructors resonate with you more than others. Now is the time to find the ones who help you achieve your goals and objectives. Their goal is simply to help you achieve yours. Here’s some steps to get you started: Put Down the Glass of Alcohol & Define in your head what your goals are? Goals are something you are going to be, do or have. But, a goal is not a goal until you define it, and it must be specific. Many people state things like: “My goal is to lose weight.” The problem with this is that it is being framed in ambiguous terms. There is no validation, no measurement and no specific timeframe. Write down your goals - Get some paper and write down what it is you want to achieve. With your goal answer the following: Is the goal specific? Can I measure the success of my goal? Is my goal bound to a timeframe? healthy living YEARS SPORTING Be specific: People need specific instructions, without them we are unable to know how to get where we want to be! Goals need to be as specific as possible and framed in realistic terms. You can use a health care or fitness professional to guide you but make the goal yours, not theirs! GOALS save $10,000 within the nex t year, you will know in twelve months that if you don’t save it – you didn’t meet the goal. In order to meet your goal you need to take the proper actions to achieve them. Time frames facilitate action – they force you to get of f your but t and do something. Make it measurable: To be a true goal it must be measurable. All spor ting activities or games use measurement systems. This tells you who is winning, who is not or if people are tied. If you set a goal today, every day you will either be ahead of the target, below it or equal to it. It is like working to meet a sales budget at work – are you ahead, below or on budget? Remember – if you are going of f track, admire the squirrels. As I always say – love what you are doing (cause you cant always love what you need to do) and celebrate some wins along the way. By Stephen Page Christmas is the season for parties, and although hopefully we all like a good party, few things are worse than having noisy neighbours who decide that tonight (and every night) is party night. Sleep can be golden, so neighbours who keep ruining that will be invariably cursed in your home. There is nothing quite like the tinkle of broken glass, the raucous drunken laughter at 3am, or the rev ving of the car or bike all day, every day. If it’s safe to do so, go and talk to your neighbours. Provided that you are reasonable about the level of decibels from their place, most neighbours will say “sorry, oops” and turn down the stereo. If this doesn’t work, or it’s not safe, the best course is simple: call the police. Police have powers to turn the stereo down to zip. Police have to be satisfied that the noise is excessive. They can take into account the ef fect of the noise on neighbours, and the likely other noise in the locality. A doof doof par ty in a quiet country Stephen Page is a partner of Harrington Family Lawyers 3221 9544 spage@harringtonfamilylawyers.com Stephen is the author of the Australian Gay and Lesbian Law Blog lgbtlawblog.blogspot.com . glen might get police action, but someone in the Valley mall might be less lucky in having the volume turned down. Police have the power to enter the neighbours’ place without a warrant and give a direction to turn the music of f or keep the noise of the par ty down, and to keep it that way for 12 hours. Turning the stereo back up (or cranking up the par ty back to excessive levels) in that time can lead to a $1000 fine and confiscation or destruction of the stereo. If the problem is a car or bike, these can be seized under anti-hooning laws. If the par ty house nex t door is a continual problem then the managing real estate agents or the body corporate may also be able to help. It is little wonder that with such a calm demeanour and obvious dedication to hard work that Keat has just been named as the official face of Gay Gold Coast where she lives and trains with her girlfriend. Hi Rebekah, congratulations on being appointed as an ambassador for your home the Gold Coast, where did your journey begin? I grew up in Albury on the border of NSW and Victoria and we lived there from when we were about 10 to when I turned 21 and then I moved to the Gold Coast, beautiful Gold Coast. It’s my home and I just love it! I realised I “was not really a team player!” What did you do as a girl, were you a girly girl, or always a sporty girl? My sister was more the girly girl plus I was pret ty spor ty, I played all spor ts - soccer, basketball, netball, tennis and then I realised I was not really a team player! Dad suggested I choose between triathlon and basketball so I chose triathlon when I was about 17. Not a team player, what brought you to that conclusion? My twin sister and I were apparently hogs on the basketball cour t. We only passed it to each other and she was even lucky if I passed it to her. I used to hate doing all the work and then losing the game. The same with tennis I hated losing the game for some reason because of someone else’s bad play or something so I guess doing triathlon if you lose the race its all on you! Who was better on the court you or your twin? Oh my sister was bet ter at every thing, she was age champion in swimming, athletics and cross country right up until year 9 and then she got a boy friend and she stopped running and riding and stopped swimming. I sor t of took over from her. I never actually got to beat her physically because she pulled out of the race, but at the time I thought I would be fit ter then her. Dad used to secretly train me to beat her but she did not end up racing. She was definitely the faster one, but now I’ve got it back on her - she isn’t anywhere near me now! Defining moment? My first ever race. I ended up winning it. issue 289 So you came back to Australia and you fell in love with who? Hmmm...I won’t mention her name, but she is my rock! Who else was there before? Oh Daniel McPherson. Oh he is going to kill me! He was my swimming coach - I met him briefly at Cronulla when I was about 19, we had a lit tle bit of a thing but obviously I knew I was gay. I didn’t want to sleep with Daniel McPherson so that was really the turning point. Every thing thinks I am crazy but we are good mates now though. We sor t of laugh about it but … um … yeah, we were not really dating, you could not really say dating. You mentioned to us before the interview how much you are in love with your girlfriend and that she is your support mechanism and every thing that keeps you going. How long have you been together? Yes definitely. We met in 2005 so we are six years this year. We have a beautiful lit tle apar tment together in Burleigh with our dogs. On our fabulous Gold Coast! Yeah we love it! The Gold Coast really is beautiful. It’s definitely my favourite place in the world to train. I love Switzerland but I always look forward to coming home. It’s just great for professional athletes to train here and there’s every thing you need. Who else do you get to hang out with, because the Gold Coast is full of celebrities and well known athletes. Oh actually its funny, I went riding the other day and I had Emma Snowsill (Olympic gold medallist), Emma Mof fat t (Bronze Medallist) and Liz Blatchford who is now in the Olympic UK triathlon team. So there were us girls and some boys that I just sor t of hang out with and one of them did not know who Emma really was. He looked down and there was some gold writing that said Emma Snowsill and he said ‘Geeze you got your own name on your shoe, she must go alright’ and I said ‘oh she doesn’t go too bad, she is an Olympic Gold Medallist.’ I also get to go to a lot of functions and launches since I was elected as a face of the Gold Coast, with Daniel McPherson” But you lived on the Murray River? We had plenty of pools but Mum said I just hated it. I used to go to swim training and mum said I used just sit there and eat chips so I star ted swimming and yeah, I realised when I was about 17 or 18 that I would much rather do triathlon than duathlon which is just riding and running. | Triathlon sure is a highly recognised sport around the world! Yes! We have qualifiers everywhere around the world, there is pret ty much an event in every single country of the world. I just love being in Europe Switzerland definitely feels like somewhere I love to live. I’m very lucky and I would not change it for any thing. I didn’t “ want to sleep When did you realise triathlon was really your sport? When I made the Australian team as a junior qualifying in duathlon. They said ‘wow junior world championships’ and then they asked ‘how do you swim?’ “I am terrible” I told them “but I want to learn”. Well I could swim but not very fast. 18 Where did that take you? All around the world really. We live in Switzerland for half the year, it’s my second home. We have training in Thailand & Korea. www.qnews.com.au There is a function or an opening almost every day on the Gold Coast, who else do you hang with? When I go out I of ten run into people like Ky Hurst, Scot ty Prince and the Titans boys and there all sor ts of well known people hanging around – You know, actors, singers, athletes. Training wise, I have got the two Olympic athletes Emma and quite a few other guys. International athletes will be coming over nex t year from all over the world. The Gold Coast really at tracts athletes from all over the world. What is the attraction? I think that a lot of people only think of the Gold Coast as Sur fers Paradise, but that is not what I think of it. I used to think that before I star ted living here, but if you go into the hinterlands you’ve got endless roads for riding with a lot of shoulder life for bike riding, there is even signs warning Olympic athletes train here. The cars are actually a lot more pleasant and respect ful, they give you the road and you can ride for hundreds of kilometres without worrying. There is beautiful Tamborine Mountain, Numinbah Valley and Murwillumbah as well. There’s south through to Tweed and Kingsclif f. Running is spectacular. There are beautiful trails everywhere. Nerang forest, Coombabah so many great places. And the Gold Coast nightlife as well? Hell yeah! I don’t get to par ty as much as I would like because it gets in the way of training and competing, but if you want to par ty, then the Gold Coast is the place to do it! I get out to a few bars and clubs when I get the chance and always love get ting out to Escape Bar in Sur fers. When you’re competing, what is triathlon’s pinnacle event? The one that everybody wants to win. Oh, it’s definitely the Hawaiian Iron Man (Triathlon) . Which is where triathlon was born right? Yes, very good. Actually the first ever Iron Man was the 20th February 1978 and that is my bir thday so I feel that it’s an omen. I haven’t won it yet but I feel like there is obviously some reason it’s on that date. I knew it was 1978 but I didn’t know it was the 20th of February so I was quite excited when I found out. If you want to “party, then the Gold Coast is the place to do it” Is it yours in 2012? That’s the goal. I missed it this year, Mum got sick and a few things happened so I had to come home early from camp but my goal was always to try to win Hawaii. I am not going to race as much this year and I’ll prepare right here on the Gold Coast - the heat here definitely adds up to the heat in Hawaii so why not. Will you stay here when you retire? I couldn’t move from Burleigh. I couldn’t leave the Gold Coast I don’t think. I have been everywhere all around the world but yeah, I still always feel like I am so at home when I am here. Is that still ten years away? Yeah well I am 33 now and one of my friends has just won an Iron Man at 40 but I think my par tner will kill me if I go anywhere near 40. I always say two years and then in two years I say another two years so and if I am 35 and still making good money and enjoying it and loving it as much as I do now, I don’t really want to have another job. I don’t want to sit in an of fice so why would I want to change it? Are sponsors easy to find for triathletes? I think it’s definitely get ting easier for Iron Man athletes. With the Olympics they just need to get a lit tle bit of exposure and like the Emma Snowsills, they get what they can out of the Olympics when they come around. But iron man in Australia is not as big as in the US. I would like it to be but it’s massive in the US. Although it is get ting a lot bigger and a lot more coverage here now in Australia. Also, the spor t is quite big in Europe so hopefully it’s going to keep going and yeah, the spor t is really changing - it’s becoming more orientated to long distance and iron man distance is what I do. There are a lot of young girls and guys in our community that look up to people like you and aspire to maybe be as great in their sport. What advice would you give to people that really want to get into an ex treme sport like triathlon? Yeah, it’s definitely ex treme what I do. I think the best advice is just to follow your dreams and enjoy it. If you can find someone that’s already in that spor t and latch onto them, that’s what I did. I looked up to a lot of people and for tunately there was quite a lot of triathletes growing up around Albury and there’s hundreds on the Gold Coast so yeah, if you can just sor t of get into a club or get to know people and ask them questions and watch what they do. If they want to get into triathlon, the best thing is just to do a google search and look up clubs. There are a lot of clubs around the Gold Coast - there are more beginner type clubs and then there is the more serious elite athletes. That is always the best way to do it or find someone that you know that is involved in it, its really hard going from a small country town I was very luck that triathlon was already established there. We heard the rumour that there maybe a Gold Coast LGBT sporting group starting up similar to Team Brisbane in Brisse. How do you think that would go with various sports competing on a social level and a competitive level as well? It would be fantastic. Any thing like that, I mean I love all sor ts of the spor t so I think any thing like that would work on the Coast, and I would be keen to get involved if possible. KMD Challenge Copenhagen August 2011 And finally, the secret to keeping you grounded and keeping you stable and motivated? Keeping me motivated? Well, I don’t think I have achieved every thing I want in the spor t yet, so ambition. And as for keeping me grounded - definitely my par tner and my family. I would like to think that I’m pret ty humble. Mum does all the bragging for me so I do not have to worry about that. So does my sister - thank God she didn’t take up the spor t as she would probably be sit ting here not me. She’d beat me! Cover issue 289 www.qnews.com.au | 19 life - feature Get Up For Oliver Tank By Tim Spencer If incredibly music savvy you might know this guy, if a fan of James Blake or steady electronic music then you might know this guy, if heading to No Year’s festival and have been investigating the line up then you might know this guy or more impor tantly if you were moved by the latest Get Up same-sex marriage commercial ad campaign (the one that went viral all around the world) and loved the backing track, then you just might know of this guy. Oliver Tank joins us to discuss his for te as well as Get Up and his music success. Q: How would you describe your music? Oliver: It’s pret ty down tempo electronic I guess. I like combining electronic sounds with real sounds for a real harmonious.....I dunno, I struggle describing my own kind of music at times. My main aim when star ting was to do something original and unique but at the same time still accessible. It can be quite strange but people still enjoy listening to it – I guess that’s what I try and do most of all. Were you always a dj/computer whiz to create this music or a musician first? It was definitely in school playing bands and stuf f like that. I only learned how to produce maybe like a year ago or a year and a half ago. I star ted studying music at Macquarie University and star ted to learn how to use some music sof tware there and I dunno, decided to have a go at electronic music at the star t of this year and wrote a few tracks. They star ted to get bet ter and bet ter and people star ted to take more interest and yeah, I guess things star ted to go really well from there. “I sent my music to Liquid Electric radio and that got a bit of air play, then they suggested I enter this Iceland competition which I ended up winning. I got to go to Iceland which was amazing and then I star ted to release more music, put together an EP. Triple J helped me out heaps, plus a lot of friends were helping me and writing a lot of blogs about me – it gained a bit of momentum and all worked out quite well timing wise – so I guess that’s how I got star ted [laughs]. “ You’ve released an EP ‘Dreams’ – how was that process? I actually did it mostly at home, just in my bedroom on my laptop. It’s liberating that you can do that, now whereas maybe 10 years ago it’d be a bit more dif ficult. I sor t of put it together over maybe three or four months. I release ‘Last Night I Heard Every thing In Slow Motion’ and didn’t really have the intention of doing an EP or any thing like that but everyone just loved that song. Pressured into it is not the right phrase but I’m glad that I did it, people are liking the EP, I was really happy with what I managed to put together, it’s like I’m really finding my feet now as a musician. 20 | issue 289 www.qnews.com.au ‘Last Night I Heard Every thing In Slow Motion’ is a big success. It even featured as the backing track to the recent Get Up marriage equality ad campaign – proud as punch about that? Yeah! The guy contacted me because I think he heard it on Triple J saying ‘aww do you mind if we use it for this video?’ and they explained to me what it was about because I guess...for some people it’s a controversial topic or whatever. I was like ‘yeah I don’t mind, go for it. Use it. ‘ I had no idea it was going to be the calibre of equality that it is now but it’s for a good cause as well – I’m glad that people are taking notice of it now and that I’m apar t of the whole process. I’ve had a few people come up to me in the street saying ‘oh you’re Oliver Tank blah blah blah’ which I dunno; is a bit of a strange feeling but nice though. Knowing that people care that much. I guess not being able to marry someone you love is a pret ty big deal, so any thing I can do to help people get to where they need to be. We’ll have to get you to play at all of our weddings if we get our way! Yeah for sure! [laughs] Oliver will be visiting Queensland again on December 31st for No Year’s Festival at the Powerhouse. It will be Oliver’s first visit back to Queensland since schoolies which was four years ago. He will be playing along the likes of Ball Park Music, Dum Dum Girls, The Holidays, Charlie May fair to name a few. Got no exciting plans and want to be where it’s at, then do give Oliver a visit at the Powerhouse this New Years for No Year’s Festival. So in the year 2007, Australia was introduced to the likes of pret ty boy Mat t Corby. Since coming in at second place on Australian Idol, Mat t Corby trialled a pop debut release that didn’t do much justice in the scene but surely kept him busy. He has now very much done a ‘Lisa Mitchell’ and has broken away from the pop, teenage hear t throb typecast and has star ted to break barriers in the indie, alternative, Late Gift Ideas?? Well Get Ready To Wiggle with Modern Day Australian Music Icons! No way!! Since November, an album release called ‘Re-Wiggled’ has been placed in all music stores for all to purchase. What does that entail you might think? The album cover cer tainly does not look like it’s child inviting but distinct with its red, blue, yellow, purple head th silhouet tes... Ok I’ll tell you! It’s the 20 anniversary of the Wiggle’s existence, so ABC have organised a tribute album ‘cool kids’ scene. Corby is now still very young (21) and has just recorded another EP ‘Into The Flame,’ which has secured him many fans plus his single ‘Brother’ is one of the highest voted songs in the Triple J super request show – which is great for his festival career. Be prepared to see a new Mat t Corby for thcoming. featuring Australian bands collaborating producing their interpretations of Wiggle hit classics. Bahahahahah!!! How intriguing and genius. This album release will feature covers by Washington, The Living End, Jebediah, Architecture In Helsinki, Adalita, Bluejuice, Frenzal Rhomb and Spiderbait. All of these ar tists previously mentioned more than likely had The Wiggle’s tunes featured in their childhood when growing up that it only makes sense that this amount of feedback was generated when the idea for ‘ReWiggled’ was put out there. Excitement for sure and a great listen allowing adults to still get their dance on to these tracks like they did in their adolescents. A great late Christmas gif t for sure! Music Reviews Marvin Priest – Beats and Blips When I first came across this name I immediately thought Ma xi Priest was back with a new album. Turns out it was just a dyslexic moment and that this new British/Australian talent is actually the of fspring of Ma xi Priest and is taking the pop world by storm. Marvin brings a lot of music influences to his music – mainly dance, pop and reggae. If wanting to sample reggae with a slight house twinge then this album will be an experience. This ‘reggae mixed dance feel ‘is evident in tracks such as ‘Waiting,’ ‘Work It,’ and even ‘To Your Hear t,’ where Marvin treats you all to his rapping talents too. Marvin has potential. This album also feature’s Marvin’s current commercial debuts ‘Own This Club’ and ‘Take Me Away.’ This naive editor didn’t realise ‘Own This Club’ was Marvin but someone else in the Jason Derulo/Taio/Neyo category... Overall good to see another British/ Aus expor t taking on the American pop genre alongside people like Timomatic but also liking that Marvin also delivers his own reggae, upbringing influences into the mix. Florence And The Machine – Ceremonials Florence honestly can sing gibberish or just bellow out tunes and it will still sound amazing! Florence’s sound has definitely been twinged a bit since her previous album – the music is a lot more power ful featuring plenty of piano and other string instruments. Plenty of backing vocals are implemented too that a gospel vibe is generated minus the religious messages. Risky yet exploring and successful. Hard not to be inspired when hearing the clapping and drums to ‘Hear tlines’ accompanied by Florence’s heavenly, angel voice. Although every track has a moment where Florence sounds beyond sensational, other great tracks consist of ‘Spek trum’ (brings back Florence’s signature harp sound) and of course her commercial releases ‘Shake It Out’ and ‘What The Water Gave Me.’ Per fect album to play when having a lazy Sunday, ‘catching up with a friend over a wine’ compilation. The Black Keys – El Camino Your one and only noncommercial, indie review before the New Year. This American duo bring you your new age, American, alternative tracks similar to their previous work but if new to these guys you might feel a joy ful, uplif ting buzz to their rock music tracks similar to what OK Go generate. A film clip to Black Key’s debut track ‘Lonely Boy’ also has the same humorous feel to those humorous music film clips that go viral on YouTube – search and view the film clip to ‘Lonely Boy’ and if not a fan the Black Keys af terwards then this cd will probably not impress. ‘Money Maker’ also has an incredible rif f derived by Dan Auerbach giving you an idea on how far just a drummer and electric guitarist can do without any other assistance. If liking your rusty rock then sample these guys and prepare to par ty out. issue 289 Britney Spears Live – The Femme Fatale Tour – DVD Had to see this performance to see if Britney was as restless, unmotivated and miserable as critics (like me) thought she was in her previous act when visiting Brisbane. There is definitely a mime element to her songs considering they sound exactly like they do on her album however she definitely brings more energy to this performance. Britney also appears very limited in her dance moves as opposed to her prebreakdown days – her moves are very simple and mildly effective – entertaining only to the hardcore fans. However, I’m sure there are people out there that are satisfied just to see her on stage stepping along to her music. Piece Of Me is impressive with heightened electric guitar implementation. Lace and Leather allows you to see Britney interact with the audience by inviting a lucky guest onstage to be dirty danced on. If You Seek Amy adopts a jazzy, 1950’s interpretation, Gimme More goes Egyptian – very different, ‘Boys’ is revived, plenty of originality is brought back to Baby One More Time. Britney also brings her version of S&M to the stage as well as a Japanese music cultured theme and sound remix of Toxic. Britney also delivers all the single releases off Femme Fatale including a very special guest appearance in her last act ‘Till The World Ends,’ which I won’t spoil, you will have to see it. If a Chris Crocker Britney fan, this DVD won’t disappoint. www.qnews.com.au | 21 REVOC on screen THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN skooB - WEIVER IRON THE LADY (M) Review by Peter Gray (PG) Review by Peter Gray A long time in development, ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ finally showcases everyone’s favourite ginger reporter in all his big-screen 3D glory. Successfully blending three of the original comic books, ‘The Crab with the Golden Claws’, ‘The Secret of the Unicorn,’ and ‘Red Rackham’s Treasure,’ this wonderous adventure follows Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) and his four-legged companion Snow y as they try to uncover the whereabouts of lost treasure. Three maps are contained within three model replicas of a ship known as The Unicorn, and Tintin unknowingly has his hands on one of them, but he soon learns how prized this possession is when the shady Ivanovich Sakharine (Daniel Craig) arranges Tintin’s kidnapping. The combination of Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg behind this production has clearly brought out the best in this classic series as it has all the live-action spectacle of some of their greatest films mixed with the stellar motion capture animation pioneered by Rober t Zemeckis, who displayed the form in ‘The Polar Express.’ Smar tly writ ten and beautifully rendered (the hand-drawn opening credits are an absolute delight), this adventure is by far one of the best films of the year, and, hands down, wor th the wait. Now when can we have the sequel? And the Oscar goes to...It’s hard to watch a film like ‘The Iron Lady’ and not imagine leading lady Meryl Streep walking away with one of those little golden statues (or at the very least a nomination), as she doesn’t just portray former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but embodies her. The biopic, which re-teams Streep with her ‘Mamma Mia’ director Phyllida Lloyd, focuses on the ambitious Thatcher and her rise to power within the government. Whether you were a fan or foe to Thatcher’s ideals, the film smar tly paints her as neither a hero or a villain - simply as a woman who knew what she wanted, but may not of always gone about it the right way. The film itself isn’t per fect as many significant moments in Thatcher’s life are either breezed over or touched on without a decent follow-up - her younger years (where she is played wonder fully by Alexandra Roach) are a prime example of this, but when Streep is as good as she is, not to mention the beautiful suppor t from Jim Broadbent as her late husband, it’s ultimately hard to fault. With so many films out this holiday season aimed at families and younger audiences, it’s good to see the adults have been catered for here with this ambitiously made picture. Eleven, Go and Gem are the only networks of fering some fresh stimulation on free-to-air and Fox tel is sticking it to their rivals big-time! Launching new networks like F/X (home of zombie smash The Walking Dead) and A&E (home of many of 7mate’s reality series), plus a Fox Footy network (if you like that sor t of thing…), they haven’t forgot ten their staple network – Fox8 – which is gaining multiple new hit series! Har t of Dixie follows Rachel Bilson (best known as The OC’s Summer & Hayden Christensen’s girlfriend) as Zoe Har t, a successful surgeon who needs to work on her people skills in order to get a fellowship she’s chasing. Fast Forward to her trying to set up shop in Bluebell, a very Everwood-like community. It’s a traditional Southern town where the By B Boy accents are thick – just like many of her patients. Look for two hunky potential romantic interests, complete with their own chaos and drama and hostility from the other doctor in town and his jealous daughter. American Idol (Thurs/Fri 6:30 from late-Jan) has churned out a few goodies (Adam Lamber t, James Durbin – youtube! – Carrie Underwood) and they’re back (and – look – Randy had a brain af ter all)! You were at a different Wedding party to the one I was at and we talked in the smoking area. I was attracted to you the moment you spoke. I didn’t get your name and you only know I am from the Sunshine Coast. We did make love but didn’t exchange names and addresses. I would love to talk with you. South of the BORDER!’ Pr otesters F alls life - feature By Dermot Ryan Regardless of whether you are having a casual stroll through any of the magnificent rainforests dotted throughout the North Coast and Northern Rivers, or if you are marching down the main street of Lismore in the New Year’s Parade, walk tall because we have so much to be proud of. South of the border is lit tered with amazing and truly beautiful National Parks and rainforests, all of which you can enjoy. Protesters Falls is a great and easily accessible walk. From the car park to the falls is about 20 minutes and the surroundings are lush as the path winds its way through the Bangalow palm forest to the base of the falls. While swimming is not allowed at the Falls because of the endangered Fleay’s barred frog, the location is the per fect romantic destination for that special squeeze af ter the par ty. It’s easy to get to, just drive to The Channon and follow the signs to the Nightcap National Park. Night Cap NP is world Heritage Listed, and Protesters is steeped in the history as it is home to the first successful anti-logging protest in 1979. If you are feeling a lit tle more adventurous, head of f to Minyon Falls. From the clif f top these breathtaking falls plunge 104 metres into the deep palm-shaded gorge below. This was originally a lava flow from millions of years ago and its primordial beauty remains. From the car park to the base of the falls is about a two hour walk, but the pay of f is incredible and unlike Protestors, you can swim in the pool’s lush surroundings and really admire the beauty. Minyon Falls Loop Walk can be accessed from Minyon Falls picnic area; this walk takes visitors through changing vegetation to the base of the falls. This walk has a steep climb out so take some water. I recommend taking a picnic lunch and making a day of it. You will not be disappointed. To get there just head to Rosebank and follow the signs. If bush walking is not your thing, stick to some fancy urban strut ting in the Tropical Fruits TRIBE parade to kick of f the NYE Festival. What star ted last year as a new event to kick of f the festival has gathered momentum for locals and visitors as a great way to celebrate the diversity of the our community, and yet another excuse to dress up and take to the streets. Not that the queer community EVER needs any excuse to dress up and take over the streets! The Parade kicks of f at 4.30 from the carpark behind the Richmond Hotel, Moleswor th Street Lismore, and will be led by two of the regions favourite community elders, the dazzling Maude Boat and our very own Bundjalung Drag Queen, Destiny Has Arrived. Get your best tribal out fit on, bring your drums and whistles and be prepared to make some noise with us as Lismore rolls out the welcome mat for Fruits and friends to say “We’re here, we’re so very queer and YES! we are going to par ty!” Strap on your skates, straddle your unicycles and join in the fun as we snake our way through the streets to the Lismore Workers Club for the 3rd annual Queer Fruits Film Festival. Regardless of where you go in our beautiful rainbow region dress loud, walk proud and have a great time.
