Mission & Vision to be changed b. Moving beyond just advertising 2) Concept-Initial Proposal of Moving Saranac Lake Artworks to the next step Adirondack International ArtWorks VISION The Adirondack Region transformed into an international destination for local, international artists and connoisseurs alike, who have strengthened the region culturally, socially and economically, while helping artists obtain a livable wage. MISSION Promoting exceptional art in our communities. WHAT IS THE A.I.A.? • Adirondack International Artworks is the cultural umbrella for arts and culture in the Adirondacks connecting local artists and art organizations with one another, with their audiences, and with the world. • It encompasses visual, performance, and literary arts through advocacy, promotion, monthly events and juried shows/competitions supporting the already existing broad range of artists and art programs in our communities. OUR REGION IS POISED TO BENEFIT FROM THE CREATIVE ECONOMY “One of the essential elements in successful communities is a concept termed ‘cultural vitality’.” Stephen Wolff, AMS Planning and Research “In rural and small communities all across our country, community arts provide a new gathering place, a cultural and spiritual touchstone that is a source of community revitalization and neighborhood revival.” Patrick Overton, Rebuilding the Front Porch of America Building connections between the area’s beautiful natural landscape and the lifestyles it supports has jump-started tourism. And that new visitor traffic has attracted art galleries and antiques stores to downtown, which in turn has spurred the creation of seasonal cultural events. (Harmony, MN pop 1133) While investing in the arts is a business in itself-...-the real benefits, according to the National Governors Association (NGA), is that they are a “potent source for economic development”. A Call to Action: The Arts Imperative, SmartCommunities.org The local arts community has already show its effectiveness in building the local economy – Over 50 studios and galleries in the market area Adirondack International Artworks can help us take the next steps! The A.I.A. will benefit the Artists, the communities and the overall regional economy • • • • • • • • • Help unite the artist community of the Adirondacks Help local artists make a “Livable Wage” Help develop cultural tourism Help to make the arts a part of the fabric of daily life Art in Public Buildings and Art in Public Spaces. Help foster pride and involvement in our community Help strengthen a thriving community of Art throughout the Adirondack Region with better public awareness, participation, appreciation and accessibility of the arts Help the community become more inclusive and provide more opportunities for artists in the region Help embrace a more diverse art arena with new ideas and art forms to enhance public awareness, education and appreciation of the arts and their impact on the community Help to survey and assess the needs of the community in relation to the arts The ones I think are most important 4 Guiding Principals/Goals • SUPP0RTING • CONNECTING • GIVING • PROMOTING 1. SUPPORTiNG Adirondack International Artworks strives to instill a passion for and participation in the arts through our many events and juried shows/competitions supporting the already existing broad range of artists and art programs in our communities. • Building a stronger Adirondack community of artists and residents alike. • Inclusiveness to ensure the entire community is embraced and celebrated, welcoming a broad range of backgrounds, interests, languages, ethnicities and cultures, genders, gender identities, sexual orientation, ages, socio-economic status and disabilities. 2. CONNECTiNG Adirondack International Artworks connects the local artists to patrons and to the local business community throughout the Adirondack Region, New York State, and the US. • Events and competitions/juried shows • Develop new opportunities and programs. • Advocacy of the arts • Fundraising events and membership drives. 3. GIViNG Adirondack International Artworks will give a percentage of the funds raised to help support the growth of the artist community and organizations within the community via our yearly fundraising and monthly competition/juried show efforts. • Artists in residence • literary, visual and performing artists • Cultural organizations in the promotion of bringing new members to the community • Adirondack International Artworks Festival • Art in Public Buildings & Art in Public Spaces 4. PROMOTiNG We promote awareness of art and culture throughout the community, share information and provide resources to the community through: • Adirondack International Artworks Festival • Monthly cultural events • Annual Gallery Guide • Magazines (in collaboration with ROOST) • Ongoing radio and TV spots • Newspaper/magazine articles on events • Social media • Artists’ registry • Workshops • Social events • VISUAL ARTS are art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking and architecture. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types. (Wikipedia) • PERFORMANCE ARTS are art forms in which artists use their voices, instruments and/or the movements of their bodies, often in relation to other objects, to convey artistic expression—as opposed to, for example, purely visual arts, in which artists use paint/canvas or various materials to create physical or static art objects. • LITERARY ARTS are art forms in which artists express themselves through the written word to create Fiction, Non Fiction, Digital Language arts, Poetry, Mixed Media/Novel, or Short Stories. Not disrupted by the “City Beautiful” movement of the 20th century our towns and villages are what larger cities are reverting to. More Mixed use and walk able cities. Harmful To achieving the objective EXTERNAL Attributes of the organization Weakness: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • W Population Density Educated audience is narrow Collaboration of art organizations is not very good Scarce resources as there are many Non-For-Profits in the Adirondacks There is no recognized common vision for the future of arts and culture in the Adirondack region (Could be a Strength also) Business community is more concerned about survival than support of the Arts The Adirondack region’s arts and culture base lacks diversity and is challenged by the region’s changing demographics and population The travel and tourism industry historically has not linked its efforts or given cultural tourism a prominent role in its marketing/attraction/programming efforts Forging partnerships Countering community skepticism avoiding displacement and gentrification documenting progress developing performance metrics 2014 Census Bureau- Median household income (in 2014 dollars), 2010-2014 $44,097 Per capita income in past 12 months (in 2014 dollars), 2010-2014 $25,805 Persons in poverty, percent 14.8% Helpful To achieving the objective INTERNAL Attributes of the environment Opportunities: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • O There is a Need/Passion for public art Increase Awareness in Literary, Visual and Performance Arts Currently there is no Summer Art/Crafts Festival Increases the tourism industry – “Cultural Tourism” New residents moving into the Adirondacks often come from places with vibrant arts and culture and recognize the importance of arts and culture to the community Rail to Trail Hobo Fest Building on the regions uniqueness and beauty Building a community of recording artists and artists in residence Engaging the community’s leaders, both public and private, to empower visible advocates and ensure community support for the development of the arts and culture sector. Prompted by an initiator with innovative vision and drive Tailors strategy to distinctive features of place Mobilizes public will Attracts private sector buy-in Enjoys support of local arts and cultural leaders Builds partnerships across sectors, missions, and levels of government Harmful To achieving the objective Threats: INTERNAL Attributes of the environment • • • • • • • T Competition for state and local grants Population Density Too many organizations not working together – Mediocrity Literary, visual and performing arts events competing with nature and outdoor activities Ensuring maintenance and sustainability Avoiding displacement and gentrification Developing metrics of performance Join the Organization H.E.A.R.T. throughout the Adirondacks Helping Enrich Artistic Residents Together throughout the Adirondacks. • H.E.A.R.T. maintains close collaboration within the Artist Community of the Adirondacks, who share the common aspiration of creating a unified platform for the building of communities that exchange ideas that drive the art world forward. They share a fundamental commitment to developing an artist colony in the Adirondacks. It is this passion for enhancing the art community for all, which adds to the vibrancy of the Adirondacks. Partnership benefits • Partnership is essential for the support of cultural events and our community.
