Community Center is to enhance and
sustain the health and well-being of the
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and
HIV communities by providing activities,
programs and services that:

all members of our LGBT and allied
communities. In the last year alone,
community members have reached out
to The Center more than 50,000 times for
support, safety and services. The need
is great, but we have been able to help
make things better in both small ways
and large.

One of the great strengths of the San
Diego LGBT community is the willingness
of so many individuals to unite to care
The San Diego LGBT Community
Center is the nation’s second oldest
for each other and to accomplish things
none of us might achieve alone. It is that
strength, that fundamental concern for
the welfare of others and that insistence
that each of us and all of us can make a
difference that drives us forward.
Ours is not a perfect world, but it is
a much better world than it was four
decades ago. We are proud to have
played a part in that change and grateful
to have had this community by our side.

centers. Functioning as the LGBT
community's flagship organization, The
Center is led by an 18-member board
of directors, employs over 40 paid staff
and utilizes more than 800 community
volunteers to achieve its twin goals
of promoting LGBT health and human
rights. The Center provides direct
program services to the many different
facets of the LGBT community, including
youth, seniors, families, LGBT Latin@
community members and their families,
and those struggling with HIV.

The Center will MAKE IT BETTER for:
Thomas now has a safe place
to live and a stable job with the
support of The Center’s Youth
Housing Project. Thomas called
The Center after he was forced
into homelessness because his
family began physically abusing
him when they found out he was
gay. Now, with this comprehensive
support, he can pursue his dreams
of going back to school and
working in healthcare.
Sandra and Marie bring Lillie
to The Center’s Family Matters
programs and events so they can
see first-hand that there are many
proud LGBT-headed families like
theirs. In spite of the anti-LGBT
messages many children hear at
school, at The Center they get to
connect with other families that
share their commitment to treating
all people with respect and equality.
Barbara first got involved with
The Center through the Young
Professionals Council. She was
so inspired that she also began
volunteering for The Center’s
Equality Voters Project. The
project gives her an opportunity
to help mobilize LGBT voters and
advocate for the civil rights policies
she cares so much about, like
marriage equality and stopping all
forms of LGBT discrimination.
George knows all about the
importance of service and
commitment. He volunteers and
participates in the programming of
The Center’s Senior Services.
He comes to The Center to stay
involved in the LGBT community
he loves, and to do more to ensure
that LGBT seniors don’t face the
challenges of aging alone – himself
included.
When Oscar found out he was
HIV positive, he was overwhelmed
and devastated. He contacted
The Center and began receiving
counseling at The Center’s
Latin@ Services. The support
and resources he receives there
have helped him take control of
his health and keep his life goals
in place. Equally important, he
was able to bring his family in for
a Spanish-speaking group so they
could learn more about HIV in a
comfortable environment.
At The Center’s Hillcrest Youth
Center, Devon gets the chance to
connect with other LGBT youth in a
safe place and share his story and
develop his talents through the arts
and media programs there. The
Center and its events and programs
help him feel less isolated, and
give him the resources and support
he needs to finish high school and
envision a positive life beyond that.

Dining Out for Life®
San Diego
Join us on Thursday, April 25, 2013,
for The Center’s fifth annual Dining
Out for Life®
Dining Out for Life® is an international
fundraising event involving the generous
participation of restaurants throughout
the country. In exchange for pledging
25%-100% of their day’s food and liquor
sales, restaurants receive promotional
materials and are listed in a city-wide
marketing and advertising campaign in
an effort to increase customer traffic.
Dining Out for Life® raises funds to
benefit The Center’s HIV/AIDS services
and prevention programs.
AIDS Walk San Diego
AIDS Walk San Diego is San Diego’s largest
one-day HIV/AIDS fundraiser and the biggest
non-governmental financial provider for HIV/
AIDS in San Diego County.
HIV/AIDS agencies in San Diego County — serving
thousands of clients — rely on funds raised at
the annual AIDS Walk to help provide essential
prevention and care programs to thousands of men,
women and children living with HIV/AIDS.
Established as AIDS Walk San Diego in 1989, this
event took place for two years prior as the Walk for
Life. Through a unique funding partnership with the
San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, AIDS Walk
San Diego is able to increase the impact of the
dollars raised at the event. Funds from the Walk are
combined with donations from other philanthropists
and foundations to qualify for matching funds, which
are distributed to local HIV/AIDS service providers.
