“SLACKER 2011 came off as a beautiful work of jazz, with each segment
representing an instrumental solo. At times dark and tempestuous (MingusParsons) and at others lyrically rhythmic, playful and exaggerated (MonkDoubek) or rapid bursts of color (Parker-Coleman) the film showcased individual
voices while still holding its center as a single work of art.”
—Matthew Odam, The Austin American-Statesman
SYNOPSIS
Richard Linklater's SLACKER inspired a generation of American filmmakers by
exploring the subculture of Austin, Texas in a loose narrative with a tapestry of
quirky characters. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of that iconic movie, 24 of
Austin's top filmmakers banded together to update SLACKER with their own
perspectives on the city. SLACKER 2011 is a stream-of-consciousness chronicle
of a day in Austin, presenting the city-dwellers, dragworms, proto-hipsters and
locations that give the city its modern identity. The film showcases a transformed
town next to things that never change. SLACKER 2011 is an homage to twenty
years of independent filmmaking, presenting the city’s changing face and
showcasing some of its most exciting talent.
“SLACKER 2011 succeeds—if not, exceeds—in its mission to capture Austin 20
years after Linklaterʼs version; cleverly commenting on how many things have
changed, yet so much has stayed the same. We might keep getting older, but
Austin continues to stay weird.”
—Don Simpson, Smells Like Screen Spirit
"A charming, sometime very funny snapshot of contemporary Austin."
--Kimberly Jones, The Austin Chronicle
ABOUT THE PRODUCTION
SLACKER 2011 was embarked on in the Spring of 2011 as a benefit for the
Austin Film Society’s Texas Filmmakers’ Production Fund (TFPF), a grant
program for Texas filmmakers that has given away over $1.2 million to Texas
filmmakers since 1996. Many of the filmmakers who participated in SLACKER
2011 had received TFPF grants for their previous films. Each filmmaking team
was given a $500 budget to pull off their scene, which they did with 24 casts and
crews throughout May and June of 2011. Fundraising began in April and
continued until the premiere of the film at Austin’s Paramount Theater on August
31st. Donors to TFPF could get signed DVD’s of the original film, T-shirts,
posters, walk-on roles, special thanks in the credits and producer credits.
It was truly a case of the community helping the community, as the production
and premiere of SLACKER 2011 helped the Austin Film Society raise nearly
$60,000 for the Fund.

Duane Graves was born and raised in San Antonio. After receiving a degree in
TV/Film from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, he directed the critically-acclaimed
documentary UP SYNDROME, an intimate portrait of his childhood friend born
with Down Syndrome. The film won several awards at festivals across the
country including Slamdance, and is currently available through Netflix. Teaming

THE WILD MAN OF THE NAVIDAD, a shoestring drive-in horror that premiered
at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival and was later released internationally by IFC
Films. He is currently in post-production of the pair's sophomore feature,
BONEBOYS, a horror film shot in Austin in 2010. Duane received a TFPF grant
in 2001 for UP SYNDROME.
Justin Meeks was born and raised in Corpus Christi. After receiving dual degrees
in TV/Film and Psychology from Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, he immediately
moved to Austin to collaborate with college peer Duane Graves. Their first
projects became a trilogy of experimental/horror shorts co-produced by TEXAS
CHAIN SAW MASSACRE scribe Kim Henkel and later released by Alternative
Cinema. Meeks then wrote, co-directed and starred in their short comedy, RIO
PELIGROSO: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A LEGENDARY COYOTE, which won the
first round of director Kevin Smith's Movies Askew contest in 2006. He is
currently in post-production of their sophomore feature BONEBOYS, a horror film
written and produced by Henkel. Duane and Justin received a Travel Grant in
2008 to take THE WILD MAN OF THE NAVIDAD to the Tribeca Film Festival in

(2001). In addition to making films, Geoff teaches in the RTF Department at the
UT at Austin. He has directed fourteen short films and a half dozen segments for
other directors’ television and film programs, and been fortunate enough to
collaborate with a wide variety of artists, filmmakers, and musicians along the
way. His critically acclaimed MONKEY VS. ROBOT screened at over 25 festivals

served as a laboratory for developing his own unique animation process and
style. Geoff wrote software specifically for animating this film and later co-wrote
an expanded version for his next project, MARS. MARS is a feature length
animated, sci-fi, romantic comedy which he completed in January 2010. Geoff
was the writer, co-producer, director, and character animator on MARS—which
