GLOSSARY OF TERMS
The data included in the following school profiles is compiled from several sources including The Massachusetts State
Department of Education, Boston Public Schools, and individual school websites.
Attendance Rate: Attendance rate indicates the average percentage of days in attendance for
students enrolled in grades 9 – 12.
Dropped out: Students who drop out remain in the school and district cohort data. If the student reenrolls in another school after dropping out, he/she is included in the original school and district
cohort as a dropout AND is enrolled in the new school and district cohort.
EPIMS: The Education Personnel Information Management System was implemented by the
Department of Education in 2007 to collect demographic data and work assignment information on
individual public school educators for the first time in our state's history. It is the source of the StudentTeacher Ratio data included in this guide.
Graduation Rate: Indicates the percentage of students who graduate with a regular high school
diploma within 4 years.
Not included in 4-Year Graduation Data is the percentage of non-grad completers and percentage
of permanently expelled students.

Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS): Shows percent of students at each
performance level for the current year. Also included is the school‘s total ―proficiency rate‖ for Math
and ELA, that is, the percentage of students who achieved either proficient or advanced
performance levels.
Plans of High School Graduates: Indicates the post-graduate intentions of high school graduates as
of the end of the school year. Not included are those students who indicated work or military service
as their post-secondary plans.
School Size by Grade: Indicates the total number of students in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. This number
does include students beyond the 12th grade enrolled in Special Education services.
School Population by Race/Ethnicity: Indicates the percent of enrollment by race/ethnicity, rounded
to the nearest tenth. Definitions (as of October 1, 2012):
African American or Black: A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.
Asian: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian
subcontinent.
Hispanic or Latino: A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other
Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.
Multi-race, Non-Hispanic: A person selecting more than one racial category and non-Hispanic.
Native American: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America
(including Central America), and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of
Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.
White: A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.

SIMS: The Student Information Management System (SIMS) is a student-level data
collection system that allows the Department to collect and analyze more accurate
and comprehensive information, to meet federal and state reporting requirements, and
to inform policy and programmatic decisions. The SIMS has two important components:
A unique student identifier for all students receiving a publicly funded education in
Massachusetts, and
Transmissions of data from districts to the Department for all students via the security
portal.
All data published in this guide was collected via SIMS, unless otherwise indicated.
Special Education: Indicates the percent of enrollment who have an Individualized Education
Program. (IEP)
Student/Teacher Ratio: The October 1, 2011 student enrollment to the total number of
teachers.

District High Schools
Every January, Boston Public Schools distributes a school selection form to every 8th grader in Boston‘s middle
schools. In order to have the greatest chance of getting your first choice, you must send back the form with
schools ranked in order of preference; and you must send it in time for the first round. (There are four rounds in
total.) You are encouraged to rank as many options as possible, there is no limit. There is no guarantee that you will
receive your top choice school, so if you do not send in a form, you will be assigned to a school by the computer.

Pilot/ In-District Charter Schools:
Pilot and In-District charter schools are two types of small schools run by Boston Public Schools. They often have an
educational focus, such as health or the arts. Unless otherwise noted below, each pilot or in-district charter does
require a separate application, varying from a simple form to a more extensive process requiring mandatory
interviews, recommendation letters, an essay and other administrative forms. Specific application steps for each
school are featured on the respective pages.

Exam Schools:
There are three citywide exam schools in the Boston Public Schools. All three schools accept new students for grades seven
and nine. The O‘Bryant School also accepts a few new students for grade 10. Students are admitted to the exam schools
based on a combined score that includes results of an entrance test, called the Independent Schools Entrance Exam
(ISEE), and their grade point average (GPA). The ISEE and the GPA are each worth 50% of the score. The ISEE is administered
every year in early November.

Charter Schools:
Charter Schools are public schools that operate independently of the Boston Public Schools system. Instead, they are
managed by the Massachusetts Department of Education. In order to get in, you must apply separately to each charter
school. Students are then selected by an independent lottery.

Education Complex after two underperforming schools closed their doors. BGA is
modeled after the award-winning Fenway High School and is home to a committed
group of highly qualified faculty and educators, 27 of whom hold Master’s degrees.
Devoted to maintaining a safe and academic environment, teachers at BGA create
innovative and “green” focused curricula in all fields of study from humanities to
the sciences that engage students and prepare them for future success. In its first
MCAS testing, the percentage of students passing at BGA increased significantly in
comparison to Odyssey: 92.8% passed English Language Arts (+8%); 73.9%
passed Science (+12%); and 83.3% passed Mathematics – a 15 point improvement
from the 68% passing the previous year at Odyssey.

The students of Boston Latin Academy, their families, and the faculty share a commitment of excellence. Our curriculum,
while rooted in the study of the classics, liberal arts, and fine arts, has been developed to ensure that all students are well

As the nation‘s oldest school, Boston Latin has prepared the youth of Boston for college success and
competitiveness in the world since 1635. Our graduates include five signers of the Declaration of
Independence, Leonard Bernstein and Ralph Waldo Emerson. More recently, the founders of Stop & Shop, the
CEO of Shaw‘s Supermarket, the owner of Roche Brothers, the owner of Viacom and the founder of Qualcomm
also graduated from the Latin School. Moreover, hundreds of our graduates have gone on to become
business leaders, research scientists, lawyers, doctors, educators, and public officials.
We have a host of fellowships and internships including the John William Ward Public Service Fellowship for
interests in Government, the Julius Babbitt Fellowship for interests in non-profit work and the Seevak Fellowship
for interests in peace and social justice.
We have a host of clubs and activities for all interests from a Fashion and Talent Club, Step Squad and Spoken
Word Club to the American Red Cross, school newspaper and literary magazine. Sports include football,
baseball, soccer, volleyball, softball, hockey, indoor and outdoor track, golf, crew, swimming, and basketball,
wrestling, cheerleading, tennis, sailing, and cross-country. While all sports are offered at the Varsity level, some
sports are offered at the freshman and Junior Varsity level as well. All sports are open regardless of gender, but
some sports do not have a gender specific team.
President Bush visited Boston Latin in 2002 to promote his NCLB legislation. BLS finished 1st in both the English and
Math MCAS results in 2011. The U.S. Secretary of Education has designated Boston Latin School as a National
Blue Ribbon School for 2012. This award acknowledges our efforts to ensure that every child attains high levels
of academic performance. We have demonstrated that, working together, parents, teachers, staff,
administrators, and community leaders can motivate all students to reach their full potential.

A Horace Mann Charter Public School in partnership with the
Boston Public Schools and Northeastern University
On Sunday, April 25, 2010 our school was renamed in honor of the late US
Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Senator Kennedy imagined a future of
educational excellence for all children, as well as health care and
economic opportunity for all families. Because of his lifetime of public
service, we are closer to these goals now than we have ever been. The
staff and students of the Kennedy Academy work each day to realize the
future he imagined for all of us.
The Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers is a small,
academically rigorous learning community for students who express an
interest in the health professions. Kennedy Academy supports students as
they develop the academic, social, and personal skills they will need to
succeed in higher education and in health care careers. Individual
guidance and support help each student set high expectations for personal
achievement.
Located on the campus of Northeastern University, Kennedy Academy
offers students an opportunity to experience their high school years within
an urban college environment, with access to university state-of-the-art
science laboratories and libraries.
Kennedy Academy has a well-educated and committed staff; almost 60%
have dual certification in special education. There is a full-time health
engagement coordinator who oversees all collaborations and external
relationships between Kennedy Academy, medical facilities, and higher
education institutions. The health engagement coordinator organizes all
field experiences/experiential learning opportunities for students and staff
and has collaborated with area employers to secure job shadowing and
employment opportunities for students. Kennedy Academy prepares
students for college and the health professions through a strong curriculum
in math, science, technology, health, history, world language, and English.
We provide college counseling through junior and senior seminars.
Parents may participate as member of the Board of Trustees. Parents
participate in college planning and financial aid workshops, various
fundraisers, year-end awards, and other activities. Parents attend a
curriculum orientation in the fall and individual parent/teacher conferences
three times a year. Kennedy Academy has two social workers who support
parents and students with academic, social, emotional and health issues.
We have partnerships with Brigham & Women‘s Hospital, Massachusetts
General Hospital, Partners Healthcare, Center for Community Health
Education (CCHERS), Boston Private Industry Council, Efficacy Institute,
Harvard School of Public Health, TJX Companies, and Children‘s Hospital.
The Kennedy Academy continues to be committed to the children of
Boston and to public education and believes that hard work combined
with constant, effective effort will lead to positive results. The school is a
collaborative effort of the Boston Public Schools and Northeastern
University.

Theme(s): Excel High School offers a college preparatory program that includes learning opportunities in
advanced science and math related courses.
Excel High School is a mid-size high school with a diverse staff and student body. With a student enrollment of 620, it is
one of two high schools located at the South Boston Education Complex. We house the SEI Program for Vietnamese
students and several programs for students with disabilities including those on the autism spectrum. We have a high
graduation rate and a positive and safe learning environment. Over 80% of our students enroll in either a two or four
year college and the Class of 2012 earned over three million in merit scholarship money. Excel High School is unique
because it truly shapes the curriculum around students‘ needs, interests, and talents. We offer a full array of
Advanced Placement courses to make sure students are prepared to be successful in college-level work as well as
an in-house after school credit recovery program to help students get back on track in order to graduate within 4
years. We believe Excel is a good fit for students who want to challenge themselves by taking advanced courses in
math, science, and engineering but also enjoy liberal arts courses such as Creative Writing, African American Music,
Urban Dance, Psychology, Cinema Classics, and Journalism.
Teachers are organized into grade-level teams and this school year, the 9th grade team is excited about launching
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) which is a program designed to ―close the achievement gap by
preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.‖ The 9th grade team also offers
―Homework Helpers‖, an afterschool program that helps freshmen with the transition from middle school to high
school. We also offer afterschool programs that give students opportunities to pursue their interests in community
service, art, dance, student leadership, debate, National Honor Society, and robotics.
Community partners and enrichment opportunities for students:
Our core community partners are the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Vertex Pharmaceuticals, and Boston Debate
League. The following programs offer our students academic enrichment and/or internship opportunities: UMASS
Boston (Urban Scholars, Upward Bound and Admissions Guaranteed Program), Castle Software Company, the Boston

Greater Egleston is a school with high academic and classroom performance standards. The entire GEHS faculty and staff
are committed to the belief that all students are capable of achieving. Greater Egleston is also a safe and welcoming
place for young adults who need a second chance to achieve their educational goals. Our mission is to prepare our
students to pursue a degree in higher education or career training institute.

Yes, Admission to Madison Park is by a lottery. Because of the nature of our school, we
can only admit the number of students who can safely work in shop areas. Early
application is recommended as the school fills and there is always a waiting list. Parents and students must be
aware of our technical vocational status that requires the students to obtain a certificate of competency in
their chosen vocational program in order to graduate.
We are the only technical vocational high school in the City of Boston. Students get to explore all vocational
programs in Grade 9 before choosing their technical/vocational major. Most of our students go on to college,
technical training schools, apprenticeship programs or other forms of further education or employment. Most
of our programs offer Industry Credentials that allow students to enter the workforce at an advanced level
while continuing their education. Freshman Academy students are required to wear uniforms. Students in
specific vocational programs are also required to wear uniforms relevant to their vocation.
We have on-the-job internships for students in many of the vocations offered, as well as local work/co-op
affiliations for all of our programs. We offer programs in conjunction with the Benjamin Franklin Institute of
Technology, Roxbury Community College, Bunker Hill Community College, Northeastern University CFES
(College for Every Student), Harvard University, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, to name a few. We have
agreements with area colleges and apprenticeship programs that give our students dual enrollment credit.
We have a competitive sports program for both male and female students, as well as a fully accredited JROTC
program. We offer many extracurricular after school activities including MCAS prep, tutoring, and academic
clubs. We are a member of SkillsUSA and the National Honor Society.

Josiah Quincy Upper (JQUS) is conceptually part of a K-12 complex that includes Josiah Quincy Elementary School
(JQES). Students at the completion of grade 5 at JQES automatically move up to JQUS.
We regard JQUS as a permanent work in progress. School-based curriculum teams are always searching for curricula
and strategies in all subjects to improve the quality of the school‘s instructional programs. Currently, teachers are
immersed in infusing the IB Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12 and planning for the formal introduction of the IB
Middle Program in grades 6-10. Teachers also assume significant leadership roles in school decision making. Students
are assigned to advisory groups that meet regularly with teacher leaders. The school has a longer school day four
days a week. Teachers participate weekly in meetings of grade teams and/or subject teams. We have a strong
college counseling program. JQUS also offers extensive after school activities.
Quincy Upper School is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) to students in grades 11-12. We expect to receive approval in 2011-2012 of a
proposal we submitted to the International Baccalaureate for formal authorization to offer IB‘s Middle Years Program
(MYP) for grades 6-10. We are at this time already conducting this program informally based on our proposal to IBO.
