Words of Wisdom from Ian Kingdom
Welcome to Sleaford Districts first Newsletter, which we have started to help
promote Scouting in the District and keep you informed of activities planned across
both the County and District.
Firstly, I would like to thank all the adult leaders, helpers and executive
committee members for the tremendous work you do in providing Scouting
activities on a weekly basis to our young people. Your efforts have clearly shown this
year in the growth of both Youth and Adult members we recorded on this years
Annual Census. Overall we have seen a growth of over 5% in the District which is
above the annual target set for Scouting Vision 2018. You have achieved this by
providing a balanced and activity packed programme that inspires the young people to want to Scout; well
done and thank you to you all!
This years sees us celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouts and the County are running Lincub 2016 – The
Biggest Birthday Bash from 17th to 19 June 2016. If you have not yet registered your Cub Pack to attend
Lincub there is still time. Visit the Lincub website for further information. We also see our Beavers celebrate
their 30th birthday and Sally Darling, ADCB, is currently in the process of getting a District Beaver Camp set
up and we hope to give you more information over the next few weeks.
Our District website, which we launched last year continues to grow and we are now promoting many of the
activities you organise and participate in from across the District whilst also ensuring important information is
available to you. We have also launched the District on both Facebook and Twitter this year. If you do not
follow us on these social media sites or visit the website, please consider it to keep yourself updated on the
latest news.
Compass is now back online and access for adults is slowly be expanded to those who require access to it.
Watch out for an email from Scout HQ for details on when you will be given access.
The District Team will continue to do all we can to support you in your roles through providing funding for
mandatory training modules, delivery of additional support for Executive Committee Members through the
successful Executive Evenings we have started and listening to and taking action where possible to any
issues you raise.
Thank you all once again for the time and effort you put in to Scouting, it is appreciated by us all.

It's Bu
Sleaford District Scouts are celebrating a
record year following its annual census of
membership.
The District, which covers over 200 miles of rural Lincolnshire, is
celebrating after seeing its youth membership grow by almost
5% since this time last year. The District numbers have swelled
to over 850 members.
This growth is down to Scouting providing fun, exciting and
adventurous activities for all of its members whose ages range
from 6 to 25. Scouting is a fun movement where young people
get their first taste of adventure in a well controlled and safe
environment—this could be their first night away from home
without their parents being there, going behind the scenes at
an RAF Fire Section, attending a World Jamboree in Japan or
handling a Boa Constrictor.
District Commissioner, Ian
Kingdom is delighted with the increase in numbers. He
said “Scouting is more popular than ever, this growth in
numbers is great to see. It is a reflection on the great
strides forward Scouting has taken and is also a reflection
of the great work carried out by our Adult Volunteers”.
Ian also went on to explain that the success has also identified
a failing within the Districts success, “It may sound silly, but our biggest
failing is in fact our success! We currently have
over 50 young people on our waiting lists
desperately wanting to Scout but we don’t have the
space or capacity for them at the moment”.
Adam Jacklin, Deputy District Commissioner
added, “The District are working to reduce these
waiting lists by opening new sections were we can
and we will shortly be opening a completely new
Air Scouts group in Bardney. However, this is
dependant on whether we can recruit even more
Adult Volunteers to support and lead the
adventure”. Adam continued by thanking the
Districts Adult Volunteers by saying “Without their
time, commitment, enthusiasm and energy,
achievements like this just wouldn’t happen”.

‘Melvyn in the Morning’
Radio programme on BBC Radio Lincolnshire
by William Wright, who was sitting in on the show, to
discuss the rising popularity in Scouting and the 5%
increase in members across the Sleaford District.
William (pictured right), started off the interview by asking Billy and Damien about their badges and told
them that they looked very smart in their uniforms.
He then asked Richard about the shortage of Leaders within the District and
said that the problem had been ‘spoken about for a few years’. Richard replied
by saying “that it wasn’t bad news, in fact its great news because Scouting is
growing faster than ever before and becoming much more popular”. He said
“Because of the growth, by about 5%, we are now seeing a District wide waiting
list of about 50 young people, and if we had more Adult Leaders, we would be
able to take those children on because of the adult to children ratios. If people
are interested in becoming a Leader and they aren’t already involved in Scouting
just Google either the County or District websites”.
Asked whether Chief Scout Bear Grylls, was a factor behind the increase in
popularity within Scouting, Richard was quick to point out that Bear has been
great for the Scouting Association and in fact both Billy and
Damien had seen him last year during one of his two visits to
Hykeham and Burley. Richard went on to add that this year
is a big year with the Cubs Centenary year with a big County
Camp in the summer with 1,000 Cubs which will be great
fun.
Richard also added that not all adult roles are involved with
the children, with some support roles found in fund raising or
on Group executive Committees.

EXPLORER SCOUT DAN’S FUND
RAISING STARTED OFF AS AN
UPHILL CHALLENGE, BUT SOON
BECAME A PIECE OF CAKE!!
Horncastle Nomads Explorer Scout, Daniel Haynes wanted to go
on the trip of a lifetime when he was offered the chance to attend
the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland.
However, Dan was told by his Mum and Dad that he would have
to play his part in making the dream come true.
For most young people, this would not have been a problem,
but for Dan, it was a real challenge.
Dan, 16, has Aspergers Syndrome and finds it very difficult to
interact socially with other people, particularly strangers. On this
occasion Dan stepped up to the mark and overcame his
difficulties with energy, enthusiasm and a sheer determination.
For starters, Dan decided to do a sponsored climb and try and climb the equivalent of the Three Peaks
(Ben Nevis, Mt Snowden and Scarfell Pike) on the climbing wall at the Showroom in Lincoln. This meant
climbing the wall for a staggering 340 times in one day! Dan didn’t quite succeed in completing the Three
Peaks climb and finished slightly short after completing the climb a staggering 293 times! Dan managed to
raise over £200 for his efforts to go towards the trip.
Dan then set about doing a cake sale and raffle in Horncastle to raise additional funds for the trip. Mum
Natasha made all of the cakes and biscuits for the day, using the theme of
St. Valentines day, so there were lots of heart shaped biscuits and chocolates on
sale. Natasha spent all week baking so Dan would have plenty of cakes and
biscuits to sell and said afterwards “I don’t want to see another cake in my life!”
Dan helped his Mum by decorating every cake and biscuit that was made.
The people of Horncastle played their part too, with the One Stop Shop letting
Dan sell his items in their shop, as well as selling the raffle tickets for him. Prizes
included free chip suppers, a free carvery meal, photography vouchers, a cake
and different jewellery and crafts made and donated by local folk.
Dan managed to raise a further £350 on the day.
Dad Mark said, “I am very
proud of Daniel and of his
achievements and hope he has a really memorable and
enjoyable time. For someone with Daniels condition, it is
really hard for them to interact socially with others, but
with Scouting, Daniel comes into his own and he is
always full of positivity. He has been involved in
Scouting since he was old enough to join Beavers,
maybe 5 years old, and he has never had anything but
positivity from all of his Leaders. It is a credit to all of
those volunteers that have lead Daniel that he is not
only going on the trip, but has worked hard by himself to

Lincolnshire Showground, with hundreds of activities on offer throughout the
jam-packed week.
Poacher is the adventure of a lifetime.
Scouts and Guides aged 10-17 inclusive can attend as participants, making the most
of the wide and varied activities and entertainment available throughout the
week.
It's our 40th anniversary, so we're sure to put on an event!

Location: 15th Lincoln Scouts Water HQ at Apex Lake, North
Hykeham. There is camping on site
Cost: £30 per participant, bring your own tent. Water sports kit
needed (wet-suits or old clothes + old trainers. Buoyancy aids
provided). The only additional costs will be for any specific
assessment costs (e.g. BCU).
Food: We will provide food from Saturday am – Sunday lunch.
You will need to feed yourselves on Friday night (we will have hot drink making facilities) – you could
