Our History
Since 1922, the Central
Florida Council, Boy Scouts
of America, chartered by
the National Council and
incorporated in the State
of Florida, has worked to
implement a quality Scouting
program to youth in its
geographic area.
Scouting continues to
grow in meeting the needs of
today’s youth. Many of our
community leaders credit
their Scouting background for
their career success, exemplary
character and citizenship.
Today’s program begins
with boys in the first grade
and includes young men and
women in high school through
the Venturing and Exploring
programs. Teaching youth
the importance of traditional
values continue to make the
Scouting program in Central
Florida strong.
The leadership of
the council is dedicated to
expanding the Scouting
movement and continuing to
strengthen our community.
The Central Florida Council received the
Gold Award, the highest recognition a Council
can earn, in the 2011 Journey to Excellence
program. The Gold Award is a testament of the
devotion of our adult leaders and community
partners in providing a quality Scouting program
to over 27,000 Scouts and Explorers in the seven
county Central Florida area.
Through our Cub Scouting events at Camp La-No-Che in the Leonard
and Marjorie Williams Family Scout Reservation and our district weekends,
over 83% of Cub Scouts in the Central Florida Council experienced an actionpacked Cub Scouting outdoor program in 2011. More than 74% of the Council’s
Boy Scouts participated in the adventure of a long-term Scout camping
experience. While we celebrate these and many other successes of 2011, we
now begin our journey to provide an even higher level of the excellent Scouting
program to the youth in our communities in 2012.
393 Boy Scouts Earned Eagle in 2011
The Central Florida Council is proud to announce that 393 Boy Scouts
earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2011. These young men joined an elite national
group of fellow Eagle Scouts that started in 1912 and includes President Gerald
Ford, Bill Gates, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and J.W. Marriott.
Our Scouts who earned Eagle in 2011 gave leadership to 393 community
service projects, enriching our seven counties within the Central Florida Council.
Along the trail to Eagle, they each earned at least 21 merit badges that will benefit
them in their future endeavors.

Summer Camp Reaches New
Heights
In 2011, Camp La-No-Che ran eight weeks of
traditional Boy Scout summer camp program. From
June 5 – July 30, 2011, we served more than 3,700
youth and 800 adults. Some of the highlights from this
past summer include hosting an international camp
staff member from Japan, establishing an all-terrain
vehicle (ATV) program (one of the first in the country),
continuing our personal watercraft (PWC) program,
adding the new BSA robotics merit badge, and
launching Operation Space Scout.
Cub Scout Day Camp
Cub Scout Day Camp in the Central Florida
Council was the place to be in the summer of 2011, as
Monsters, Myths and Legends abounded in Central
Florida Council! Over 1,800 Cub Scouts took
their leaders and families on never-to-be-forgotten
adventures at 19 different locations throughout Central
Florida. Everywhere they went, they found more things
to learn and explore.
Tigers learned how to shoot a bow and arrow,
aim a BB gun and maybe even hit a target. Webelos
perfected the skills they had been learning throughout
their Cub Scout years with some great shots fired on
the BB gun range and lots of bull’s-eyes were counted!
Crafts were found in all different shapes, sizes and
mediums, from knightly coats of armor and Big Foot
stompers, to leather and woodworking crafts.
Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos went home,
covered in dirt and camp grime, with tales of great
adventure. More friends were made, new skills were
learned and more fun was had. On the last day of camp,
throughout the Central Florida Council, you could hear
the voices of thousands of Cub Scouts saying, “Mom,
can we do this again next year?”

13,000 Attend Scout Show at Bright House Networks Stadium
On April 30, 2011, we held the largest gathering of Scouts in the Central Florida Council’s history at
Bright House Networks Stadium at the University of Central Florida. Presented by McDonald’s, The Central
Florida Scout Show was bigger and better than we could have imagined. Scouts, families, company partners and
the community all came together to witness ‘Scouting in Action.’
The event began Friday night with hundreds of Scouts and their families camping around the stadium.
On Saturday, nearly 500 interactive booths were set up in and around the stadium. There were so many booths
that only a few ambitious attendees were able to visit every one.
Sometimes it takes an event such as the Scout Show to remind us of the significance and impact of
Scouting. We look forward to even more excitement as even more Scouts and organizations join us in 2012 on
our journey into the next 100 years of Scouting.

Council Recognition Banquet
Another successful year
of Scouting in Central Florida
was celebrated at the Buena Vista
Palace Hotel & Spa during the
annual Council Recognition
Banquet. In June, more than
1,000 community leaders,
Scouting supporters and new
Eagle Scouts joined us to honor
the 2010 Floyd White Class of
Eagle Scouts and the Don Stafford
Class of Silver Beavers.
The 100th Anniversary of Scouting generated the largest class of Eagle Scouts in our history. In 2010, 383
Scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest youth award in Scouting.
At the first banquet committee meeting in January, banquet chairperson Carolyn Gosselin shared her
vision for a banquet that would be the highlight of the year for our Eagle Scouts, Venturing Silvers, Silver Beavers
and their families. Her goal was to have the highest attendance in the history of the Central Florida Council,
and that mark was met and exceeded. The celebration kicked off with a special treat, as Council Board Member
Giovanni Livera entertained the audience with an exhibit of astonishing magic.
A highlight of the evening was honoring former Council President Len Williams with the Distinguished
Eagle Scout Award. The award was established in 1969 to acknowledge Eagle Scouts who have distinguished
themselves in business, professions, and service to others. Eagle Scouts must have earned their Eagle Scout rank
a minimum of 25 years previously to be eligible for nomination. Prominent recipients of this award include
President Gerald R. Ford, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, motion picture director Steven Spielberg, WalMart founder Sam Walton, and former Orlando Mayor Carl T. Langford.
During the evening, the inaugural class of the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award was presented. The
NOESA Award is a prestigious recognition granted by the local Council’s National Eagle Scout Association committee
to Eagle Scouts who have demonstrated outstanding achievement at the local, state and regional level. Unlike the
Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, which is a national award, this award recognizes Eagle Scouts whose efforts have
made a positive impact closer to home. Eagle Scouts Jeff Jonasen, Wes Estey, and Rick Lentz were honored.

Adams Most Outstanding Eagle Service Project.
Jeff ’s project entailed the design and installation of
a 9/11 memorial, constructed from a steel remnant
retrieved from the rubble of the World Trade
Center in New York City. This memorial, the first
official “World Trade Center Memorial” in Florida,
is now permanently displayed outside the City Hall
in Windermere.

Over 4000 attend Golden Eagle Dinners
Our journey into the next 100 years of Scouting began with our Golden Eagle Dinners, which were
a rousing success. More than two million dollars was raised by these community events to strengthen our
journey for the next 100 years of Scouting. The successful events would not have been possible without more
than 495 community leaders that gave leadership to the events and over 315 corporate sponsors. Our message
of “Scouting’s Impact” was shared with over 4,000 dinner attendees! Thirteen community leaders, including
Leonard Williams, Senator Alan Hays and Sheriff Don Eslinger were honored for their dedication to the
community.

Units Earn Over $425,000 in
Popcorn Sale
Scouting units in Central Florida earned
over $425,000 in commissions from the annual
popcorn campaign. This commission gave Scouts
the opportunity to attend high adventure camps at
Philmont, Sea Base and Northern Tier; go to Boy
Scout summer camp or attend Cub Scout Day Camp;
and earn thier own way to their Scouting adventure.

Golf Classic was a Hole in One
The Boy Scout Golf Classic held on September 26, 2011 was another tremendous success. Due in no
small part to the leadership and direction of co-chairs Jeff Ramsey of Bank United and Todd Miller of Greenberg
Traurig. A fun-filled and quality tournament was delivered to all 24 teams. The overall feedback was very
positive, ranging from the outstanding sponsors to the wonderful golf course and staff at the prestigious Golden
Bear Club at Keen’s Pointe in Windermere.
Thanks to each of the committee members for their hard
work to ensure that the “Classic” was a “First Class” affair.

Sporting Clays Tournament Blasted with Excitement
As expected, the Sporting Clays Tournament was a huge success, thanks to the outstanding sponsors, the
delicious food, fun, and camaraderie. The top gun quality tournament was delivered to everyone at Quail Creek
Plantation on November 10th and 11th.

Cigar Aficionado, created a “blast” of a good time. The High Over All (HOA) Top Gun was William “Bill”
Valdez, who shot an amazing 98 out of 100! Special thanks go to Larry Dale, Sporting Clays Chair and each
committee member for their diligence and commitment ensuring a first class event. Special thanks also to the
staff and management of Quail Creek Plantation for their generous support and accommodations.

Scouting for Food
A Huge Success! Over 550,000 Pounds Collected
Just before the holidays, the Scouts and families of the
Central Florida Council went “Scouting for Food.” And once
again, this annual service project helped provide tons of food for
those in need.
On the first Saturday of November, thousands of Scouts
across seven counties canvassed their neighborhoods, placing
“Scouting for Food” bags on front doors. Instructions asked
residents to place the bag outside their door the following
Saturday. All told, Scouts collected more than 550,000 pounds of
food!
The food was distributed to those in need through the
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and several other
neighborhood food banks.

Food Bank, said “The demand for food remains high. With
people out of work and many homeless families, ‘Scouting for
Food’ is critical because it replenishes the food shelves in our
warehouses and brings much needed relief to thousands of
families during the holiday season.”
“Scouting for Food” is the single largest food drive in
Central Florida. The collected food produced more than
400,000 meals.
100th Anniversary Service Project
Renovating School in Kenya Complete
Since the inception of the Scouting
movement, the slogan for the Boy Scouts of
America has been “Do a Good Turn Daily.” In
keeping with our slogan, the Central Florida
Council developed the “Scouting for Change”
International Service Project. Scouts and
Scouting volunteers collected quarters to
improve a school in Nairobi, Kenya, near the
location where Boy Scout founder Lord BadenPowell is laid to rest.

Outreach and Multi-Cultural Initiatives
The mission of the Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of
America’s Scoutreach Division and Hispanic Initiative program is to
develop a comprehensive service plan of Scouting to meet the needs
of diverse populations in the council’s target areas: Orange, Seminole,
Osceola, Volusia, Lake, Flagler and Brevard counties. This includes
helping the council improve communication and relationships with
chartered organizations, as well as recruiting strong adult leaders to
ensure that culturally diverse and economically diverse youth have the
opportunity to join the Scouting program.

outreach for youth in the Hispanic community.
Learning for Life
Learning for Life is designed to support schools and community-based organizations in their efforts
to prepare youth to successfully handle the complexities of contemporary society and to enhance their selfconfidence, motivation, and self-esteem. Seven programs focus on character development education. Learning
for Life programs help youth develop social and life skills, assist in character and career development, and help
youth formulate positive personal values. It prepares youth to make ethical decisions that will help them achieve
their full potential. Learning for Life provided a character education curriculum to teachers in 32 Orange County
Public Schools representing over 17,000 students, most of which attend Title 1 schools.

Orange County Public Schools came to
Rollins College to participate in our inaugural
“Learning to Lead” leadership seminar.
Students were introduced to various concepts
of leadership in three different hands-on
workshops throughout the day. Over 750
fourth grade students participated in an
Outdoor Experience at Camp La-No-Che,
where the programming supported their yearlong focus on Florida History. For the fifth
year, Learning for Life partnered with Sonny’s
Franchise to provide a week-long character
camp for underprivileged youth.
