Acting President and CEO and Vice President of Development: John P. Cerniglia Chairman, Board of Trustees: Debby Stikes Communications Coordinator: Helen Gaillet The United Methodist Children’s Home was established in 1871 to care for children orphaned during the Civil War. Over the years, we’ve adapted from that singular focus to our current efforts to help foster children, as well as our on-campus programs in Decatur that help foster youth ages 18–21 and homeless families with children develop the skills to stand on their own. But, we’ve always stayed committed to our founding mission of serving children and families in need. CARE complete strangers to these children. At The United Methodist Children’s Home, we have to turn away an average of 30 foster children a week because there are simply not enough foster homes. The church can solve this crisis. During National Foster Care Month, I challenge you to learn how you can get involved. Whether that is opening your home to a child in need or volunteering to help a family that has foster children, there is a job for everyone. Also in honor of National Foster Care Month, we will be launching our first foster care coalition! Ten churches in the Gainesville area are coming together to create a foster care ministry in their congregations. The United Methodist Children’s Home is honored to serve as the organizing child placement agency for this coalition. In this issue of Signposts, we hope you will take some time to learn more about fostering with The United Methodist Children’s Home. We are introducing you to a few of our foster families, answering frequently asked questions, and outlining what IMPACT training entails for new foster families. If fostering a child is something close to your heart, I challenge you to read this feature and receive the answers you seek. During National Foster Care Month, we celebrate families like the Rogers. Since 2012, Beth and Jimmy Rogers have served as foster parents to nine children. They currently have three foster children and two adopted children at home. They also have two biological children in college. Their fostering is truly a labor of love. You will also read some of our impacts from 2015. We had a remarkable year and give thanks for the wonderful support we received from more than 400 United Methodist Churches and 4,082 individuals. Join us, please, in thanking God for these accomplishments! As we head into National Foster Care Month, we ask you to commit to learning how you can support foster care; prayerfully consider supporting our ministry financially; and pray for the children, youth, and families we serve. John P. Cerniglia is Acting President and CEO of The United Methodist Children’s Home and serves as Vice President of Development. The first day she arrived at the house, she gave her brother a big tearful hug and immediately went to her new room and drew a picture of the family she had been separated from. About a week later, she drew a picture of the family she lives with now. We still have both pictures hanging on our fridge to remind us all of the love we are surroun ded by.” The Hughes Family Foster family since November 201 5 Total number of children fostered: 4 “We feel like this is a calling on our fam ily from the Lord. He has blessed us with so man y things that allow us to be available for this. It would be wrong for us to not use those blessing s for His glory. We also feel that it is a great tool to teach our own children so many things about being a servant to others and showing Christ’s love.” 5 FAQs Foster Care What does the Bible say about fostering children? A. The Bible says, “Religion that God accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…” — James 1:27 (NIV) Why should I foster? A. The need for foster families is great. In Georgia alone, 12,000 children are in the foster care system and that number is growing every day. Each month, more than 150 children sleep in hotel rooms under the supervision of a state-contracted employee, a complete stranger, due to a lack of foster homes. Children escaping abusive or neglectful situations need a safe place to live and be loved. s IMPACT trainings take place on our campus in Decatur, in Gainesville, or in a local church or community location by request. While attending IMPACT classes, you will complete the required paperwork, including a background check, providing references, medical examinations, drug screening, and a financial assessment. Contact Denise Peacock to learn more at (404) 327-5864 or dpeacock@umchildrenshome.org. Who can foster? A. Our foster parents are a diverse group of families and individuals who meet the following criteria: • Over 25 years old • Appropriate housing for children • Income must be verifiable • Desire to share their home with children How can I help? A. You can help The United Methodist Children’s Home recruit new foster parents or become a foster parent yourself. Attend an informational meeting to learn more. If you aren’t able to open your home right now, we have so many other ways you can get involved. Where are your informational meetings held? A. We hold informational meetings at both our Decatur and Gainesville offices as well as in other settings, such as churches, as requested. We also offer IMPACT training, which helps prepare you for a positive foster experience. 6 How does The Children’s Home foster care ministry work? A. The Children’s Home recruits, trains, and approves foster families, who are then assigned to one of our foster care workers. We place referred children with a foster family that will be an ideal fit and a loving, compassionate, and nurturing home. Children also receive appropriate services to help them heal from the trauma they have experienced. Our family-centered approach creates a partnership between the child’s birth and foster families to increase the likelihood that the child may permanently return to his or her birth family. When this is not possible, The Children’s Home assists with the process of establishing a permanent home for the child or children. We also help: • Train and support foster parents; • Assess, plan, and coordinate services for foster children; • Advocate for foster children within the court, education, and DFCS systems; • Collaborate and create partnerships within the community for the benefit of children and birth families; • Supervise biological parent-child visitations; and • Maintain a 24/7 after-hours intake and support line. What is The Children’s Home history with foster care and goals for the future? A. The Children’s Home has had a foster care ministry since 1973. We consistently exceed Georgia’s standards for foster care providers and maintain the highest performance scores in the areas of permanency, safety, and well-being of children. Our program is faith based, and our staff and foster parents understand that we seek to show God’s love to children and families. We offer quality service with specialized staff, an intensive staff-to-client ratio, and accreditation from the Council on Accreditation and EAGLE. We have an expansion plan to help us grow from serving 90 children a day to 500 by 2020! By the end of 2016, our goal is to be serving 124 children a day. If I can’t foster right now but want to get involved, are there other opportunities for me? A. Absolutely! Our foster families need support from their community. We need volunteers to surround, support, and love these foster families. View our “Care Connection” model to learn how your skills and talents can help children in need. Every child deserves to be raised in a loving, compassionate, and nurturing home. Could you open your home and your heart to children in need?
