2009 Annual Report Dear Friend, I truly have the best job in the world. Decisions I make or support are directly related to the number of animal lives saved, which is immensely gratifying. Just as special, however, is talking with people about their pets and hearing of the humor, joy and fulfillment their animal companions bring to their lives. The most introverted member of any group will light up as they sing the praises of their pet and assure me that they have the best and the brightest companion known to mankind! The bond people share with their pets is truly amazing. The past year proved rewarding for KHS in many ways. We experienced record-breaking results in our proactive programs – adoptions, spay/neuter and humane education – all serving more animals and people than previous years. While our existing programs grew in size and scope, we also added two new initiatives. KHS began the area’s first Pet Food Bank, recognizing the hardships many pet owners have experienced due to the economic downturn, that provides free pet food to families with cats and dogs in need. We also started a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program targeting feral cats and ensuring they are safely spayed or neutered to help control the outdoor cat population in our area. Through the dedication and hard work of caring staff, volunteers, customers and donors, we’ve saved lives, healed broken hearts, given second chances and strengthened relationships between people and their pets. Protecting or repairing the human-animal bond is the cornerstone of our mission at the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS). We are passionate about bringing people and pets together while improving the lives of both. As always, the staff and board at KHS celebrate success then quickly set our sights on the horizon, relentlessly moving toward our goals. Our vision for the future of pets is simple, yet lofty. We envision a day when every displaced pet that is deemed adoptable will find a permanent home, and not a single pet is euthanized due to lack of space at a shelter. In the past 12 months KHS came close to achieving that goal, with less than 1% of all incoming animals euthanized for overcrowding. That’s not good enough and we will continue to work tirelessly until that number hits zero. Our successes make the world a better place, one animal and one person at a time. As a supporter of KHS, you have been an important part of each and every success. It’s because of your support that we can look back with pride and look forward with even greater excitement as we continue caring for the animals, caring for the community. With warmest regards, Lori Kane Redmon President-CEO “Caring for the animals, caring for the community.” Dear Benefactors and Friends, It has been an honor to volunteer for the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) for the past five years. The organization has evolved and grown in leaps and bounds in terms of strength and progress toward its goals during this time, and I credit the extremely professional and dedicated staff for these achievements. Throughout the years, two areas have come into focus: proactive solutions to the pet overpopulation problem and the importance of the bond between people and their pets. Both of these issues affect the quality of life in our community. I am most proud of KHS for opening the S.N.I.P. Clinic in February 2007. Open to the public, the low-cost, high-volume surgery center was the first of its kind in our area. In August 2009, the clinic performed its 20,000th surgery. KHS continues to focus on spaying/neutering as the single most effective proactive solution to the pet overpopulation problem. Board Members The renovation and expansion of the main campus in south Louisville, known as the Main Campus Improvement Project (MCIP), is under construction. The improvements will make the facility a healthier and less stressful environment for the pets in its care. In addition, it will make visiting the adoption center more attractive for families looking for a new pet, thus making the “adoption option” more successful. As a result, we are confident a greater number of pets will find their forever homes more quickly. It has taken several years to raise the majority of the funds to make this dream a reality. We are just short of our fundraising goal, and continue to reach out to the community for support. KHS provides valuable services to our citizens without any support from city, state or federal funding. I applaud those individuals and families who recognize that unconditional love comes in many shapes and sizes, and that a homeless pet makes a wonderful addition to any family. As Louisville continues to evolve into a world-class city, so too must our animal welfare services improve and expand. KHS is leading the way and setting the example. Please accept my thanks for your support of our efforts. Sincerely, Patti Swope Patti Swope Chair, Board of Directors Beth Andrews Toni Clem John Hassmann Marti Hazel Janet Lively Heberle A. Through adoptions, education programs and spay/neuter efforts, KHS offers proactive solutions to the pet overpopulation crisis in our area. For the sixth consecutive year, KHS set a new adoption record, with 6,141 pets placed in homes! KHS adopted out 1,982 felines (32%) and 4,159 canines (68%) during fiscal year (FY) 2008-09. Private support enables KHS to continue providing shelter, food and medical care for thousands of homeless pets each year, in addition to making spay/neuter and education programs possible. KHS does not receive any city, state or federal funding from any entity, nor are we funded by any national humane organizations. Thanks to the community’s continued support, we’re making Louisville and its surrounding areas a better place for our four-legged friends and the people who love them. Mission Statement The Kentucky Humane Society advocates the humane treatment of companion animals through leadership and proactive solutions to pet overpopulation, including adoptions, education and spay/neuter efforts. Thanks to the generosity of Feeders Supply, seven of their stores provide permanent adoption sites for KHS. Nearly 50% of our pets found homes via one of these satellite locations, giving them a second chance at happiness. Total Adoptions: FY 04-05 4,893 FY 05-06 5,070 FY 06-07 5,238 FY 07-08 5,964 FY 08-09 6,141 Lonely Hearts Club The KHS “Lonely Hearts Club” highlights pets who might need more time to find their lifelong friend, whether it’s due to special needs or simply because they’ve been overlooked by adopters. During the fiscal year, 86 “Lonely Hearts Club” members found permanent homes, a 28% increase compared to last fiscal year. “Pet of the Week” Media Partners Each week, our local media partners feature adoptable pets, reminding the community that there are thousands of animals in need of homes. KHS thanks these local media partners for featuring more than 360 individual cats and dogs during the fiscal year. • • • • • • • • • • • • • WAVE 3 TV WDRB FOX 41 TV 91.9 WFPK-FM 97.5 WAMZ-FM 84 WHAS-AM 106.9 WVEZ-FM WHAS11.com WLKY.com The Courier-Journal The Voice-Tribune Lynn Tincher’s “The Literary Pen” Examiner.com Sam Swope Auto Group & Insight Cable S.N.I.P. Clinic The Kentucky Humane Society’s S.N.I.P. Clinic celebrated its second anniversary this fiscal year. By having a singular spay/neuter focus, the clinic’s high-quality, high-volume approach is designed to reduce the population and to help eliminate future suffering. During FY 08-09, the S.N.I.P. Clinic spayed or neutered 9,059 owned cats and dogs. Of that number, 4,459 were felines (49%) and 4,600 were canines (51%). Since opening in February 2007, the full-time, public clinic has spayed or neutered more than 20,000 owned animals! Transport Program In addition to providing services to local residents, the S.N.I.P. Clinic also offers a free pet transport program to surrounding counties within a 90-mile radius of Louisville. In FY 08-09, the clinic served 3,480 (38%) companion animals via 13 monthly transport partners in Kentucky and Indiana. Since opening, the clinic has partnered with more than 30 animal welfare agencies and offered discounted surgery prices to those with registered nonprofit status. Financial Fix Through our financial assistance program, the S.N.I.P. Clinic helps those who cannot otherwise afford our low-cost services. Thanks to private supporters, the clinic was able to award financial aid to 250 owners and their four-legged friends, as well as perform 185 free surgeries for pit bulls and pit bull mixes. In total, the clinic provided $9,705 in monetary support to help families in need, a substantial increase (50%) compared to fiscal year 2007-08. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) This fiscal year, the S.N.I.P. Clinic introduced a new program to limit the growing population of feral cats in the community. Through the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program, the clinic provides humane traps to area residents, allowing them to safely capture and transport feral cats for low-cost spay/neuter surgeries. After the surgery, the cats are released back to the colony – unable to reproduce and breaking the cycle of suffering. Since its launch in April 2009, the S.N.I.P. Clinic has loaned 45 traps, spaying or neutering 142 feral felines. “I feel privileged to be part of a team that is positively impacting the health of companion animals and, ultimately, the health of our community.” — Courtney McKinney, S.N.I.P. Clinic Manager RESCUE During FY 08-09, the Kentucky Humane Society cared for 82 special rescue cases. The KHS Rescue Department conducts animal rescue and handles special cases, including pets hit by cars, pets attacked by other animals and those with life-threatening conditions and diseases. County Rescue In addition to our programs in metro Louisville, KHS also handles animal ordinance enforcement and cruelty investigation in Henry, Spencer and Trimble counties. This year, we helped 706 animals in Henry County, 290 in Spencer County and 319 in Trimble County. Combined, our rescue officers assisted 1,315 animals from those counties. Safe Haven Working in cooperation with the Center for Women & Families, KHS offers assistance to domestic violence survivors through our “Safe Haven” program. While these survivors receive shelter from abusive living situations, KHS cares for their pets at safe and undisclosed locations. In February 2009, KHS proudly accepted the Partner of Distinction Award from the Center for Women & Families, recognizing the “Safe Haven” program as playing a vital role for the families and their beloved pets. GETTING BACK HOME We happily reunited 298 pets with their owners this fiscal year, a 63% increase compared to fiscal year 2007-08! In addition to offering a comprehensive “Lost & Found” service, the Kentucky Humane Society posts photographs online of all stray cats and dogs who come into our care. KHS also attributes the return-to-owner success to microchipping and microchip scanning. KHS not only microchips all adoptable pets, but we also offer low-cost microchipping for owned pets at our WAGGIN’ TRAIL 5K and for animal clients at the S.N.I.P. Clinic. PET FOOD BANK In May 2009, KHS launched Louisville’s first weekly Pet Food Bank to help families and their companion animals remain together. Pet owners having financial difficulties can pick up cat and dog food each Saturday at our main campus free of charge. Since its start, the KHS Pet Food Bank has distributed food to 745 people representing 1,430 dogs and 1,342 cats— approximately 64,000 tons of food! BEHAVIOR TRAINING Community Program Since 2000, the KHS Behavior Training Program has promoted lasting relationships between pets and owners via group classes, private training and behavior seminars. In FY 08-09, our Behavior Training Program helped 838 canine clients and their owners through education and positive reinforcement training. Of that number, 657 dogs participated in group classes and 181 pets received assistance via in-home, private training. With six convenient locations in Louisville, it’s easy to get expert guidance and the tools an owner needs to strengthen the human-animal bond. Always looking for ways to expand our service to the community, KHS added a new “Service Dog” training class to help dogs become canine assistants for those with disabilities. All behavior training fees help support the KHS mission. Shelter Training & Animal Enrichment “Camp Canine” is a shelter Behavior Training Program designed for canines with special behavioral needs as well as young, energetic dogs that benefit from basic manners training prior to adoption. In FY 08-09, KHS graduated 76 canines from this program who ultimately were placed in permanent homes. In addition to “Camp Canine,” KHS also launched our Animal Enrichment Program for cats and dogs. Volunteers manage playgroups for adult canines, as well as make and distribute toys for cats and kittens.Through this volunteer-driven program, animals are provided stimulation for their bodies and minds—keeping them active and healthy. NEXT GENERATION OF PET GUARDIANS The Kentucky Humane Society offers fun and educational opportunities for children of all ages throughout the year. In FY 08-09, KHS celebrated our 22nd year of offering summer camp programs. Forty-two campers and their own dogs participated in Canine Companion Camps for 6 to 12 year olds, and 330 children attended Animal Adventure Camps for 6 to 12 year olds over an eight-week period. In 2009, KHS introduced Animal Advocates Camp where 44 young adults participated. In all, 416 children learned a greater sense of kindness, respect and responsibility toward animals. KHS takes humane education to the classroom. The B.A.R.K. (Be Aware, Responsible and Kind) Program, which is an in-classroom curriculum for students in Kentuckiana schools, reached 2,835 children. Through a partnership with the Girl Scouts® of Kentuckiana, KHS hosted interactive and educational workshops for 530 area Girl Scouts. During FY 08-09, KHS served a total of 3,781 children via these initiatives to educate the next generation of pet guardians. ANIMAL SUPPORT PROGRAMS Helping Support the Mission! FOSTER CARE This year, Kentucky Humane Society Foster Care volunteers cared for a total of 722 cats and dogs! Foster Care volunteers open their homes and hearts to animals needing special care and attention. Volunteers cared for kittens and puppies too young for adoption, pets recovering from injuries and those in need of extra socialization. KHS also utilizes emergency Foster Care volunteers during times of overcrowding. During FY 08-09, KHS Foster Care parents hit a new record by volunteering 71,366 hours! Volunteers Whether it’s adoption matchmaking, exercising dogs, taking photographs or working behind the scenes for a special event, the Kentucky Humane Society relies on volunteer support to continue caring for thousands of needy animals each year. Their unwavering commitment and enthusiasm truly enables us to continue helping animals and the people who love them. KHS volunteers set a new record this year by contributing a total of 88,842 hours! With an increase of nearly 10,000 hours compared to FY 07-08, volunteers touched more animal lives than ever before. Special Events Throughout the year, KHS hosts special events to raise much-needed funds for the homeless animals in our care. Our annual events include Picture Your Pets with Santa, the Waggin’ Trail 5K, Tuxes & Tails benefit auction and gala, Pause for Pets fundraising luncheon, Dog Day at the Park and other promotions. Combined, more than 4,000 animal lovers attended these events and promotions. Thanks to private supporters and sponsors, KHS raised $419,294 for its lifesaving programs through these events! Pet Resorts To help support our mission programs, KHS established the Eastpoint Pet Resort and Fern Creek Pet Resort. Both pet resorts offer boarding, all-breed grooming, Doggie Daycare, special pet activities and in-home pet sitting. Combined, their business resulted in 19,568 appointments this year. Each client’s patronage helps fund lifesaving programs such as adoptions and rescue. KHS Funding Sources Funding Allocation Individual Donors The Kentucky Humane Society thanks all donors who made a gift of cash or an in-kind gift between 10/01/08 and 09/30/09.
