MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY
Dear Friends of the Foundation,
It is with pleasure that we bring to you the Foundation’s Annual Report. The theme
of the Report – Their Future Rests in our Hands – reflects the communities tradition
of not only making a difference today but wanting to make a difference in the lives
that follow in our footsteps.
Leaving a legacy…is why community foundations exist. Our goal is
to find a way to give you, the donors, the opportunity to make an
impact on future generations. Gifts made today will still be helping
the community a hundred years from now.
Over the past several years, you have shown your support of the
Marshall Community Foundation as a major unifying and philanthropic force in our community. As the Foundation described itself in
the 1998 Annual Report…steady & anchored in the community…those words still hold true today. Despite
the economic difficulties, despite the many challenges facing our community, you continue to remain
committed and giving day after day, decade after decade.
We are thankful. You enabled us to approach 11 million dollars in assets in 2007. You enabled us to
award $424,000 in grants and scholarships, you gifted us with over a thousand donations totaling
$434,000. We should all be proud.
You have made us what we are ... please help us to continue growing a stronger community….

YOUR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION is governed by eighteen volunteer
leaders with various backgrounds and experience who dedicate their time and
resources. These “Partners in Philanthropy” meet monthly to oversee our
endowments, cultivate new donors, review grant requests, and make funding
decisions. We are grateful to these civic leaders who work together toward a
shared goal of improving the lives of citizens in the Marshall area.

FROM ITS INCEPTION 17 years ago, the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) has strived to
improve the community. Each year, 25 teens from Marshall High School learn the importance of
philanthropy. The group is committed to community service projects and achieves this through
grantmaking and numerous volunteer activities. We are proud of these young philanthropists.

THE FUNDS OF the Marshall Community Foundation support programs and organizations as diverse as the
interests of the donors establishing them. We are proud to present our “Family of Funds”.
NEW FUNDS, NEW HOPE, NEW GROWTH
Ann and Anthony La Pietra Scholarship- Established April 2007
John La Pierta, Katherine La Pietra, and Margaret La Pietra Kunz established this scholarship in loving memory of their parents, Ann and Tony La
Pietra. Ann and Tony embodied a spirit of giving, creativity and community activism. This scholarship is a scholarship to be offered to one or more
graduating seniors or previous graduates from the Marshall Area and are
chosen on the basis of their creative endeavors and community activism.
Herold and Retta Reuss Public Safety Scholarship- Established
July 2007
This Scholarship was established by Herold Reuss, long time resident of
Marshall and retired Chief of Police. It is his desire to assist Marshall area
residents who are pursing a career in the Criminal Justice, Emergency
Medical Services, or other related fields, such as but not limited to, Fireman,
Policeman, or Legal Secretary.

Steve Wasielewski Memorial Bookstore Scholarship- Established
June 2007
This Fund was originally established in May 1977 with the Marshall Public
Schools by Brian Burns and Ben Armstrong, faculty advisors, in memory of
Steve Wasielewski, who was the student manager of the Marshall High
School bookstore. Steve was always smiling, active in a wide variety of
school and class activities, loved by his classmates and respected by all who
knew him. He truly made the most of his high school years and the recipients should represent these qualities.

Tekonsha Township Library Fund and the Harvey Randall
Memorial Scholarship- Established May 2007
These funds were established with a bequest by Harvey Randall to the
Marshall Community Foundation. Mr. Randall was a long time resident of
Tekonsha and a 1934 graduate of Tekonsha High School. Along with his
brother, he founded Randall Beans, from which the Tekonsha annual “Bean
Day” has become synonymous. By establishing these two Endowment Funds, Mr. Randall will have a lasting impact on the Tekonsha community by helping Tekonsha High School graduates pursing a higher education and providing for the needs of the Tekonsha Township
Library.
UNRESTIRCTED FUND- Fund for Marshall
The income from this endowed fund is used to support the
emerging, changing, evolving needs of the community now
and in the future. Named Funds were established from 19932002 and commemorate the lives of donors who have left a
permanent gift of $3,000 or more to the Marshall Community
Foundation. These gifts helped to establish the Foundation’s
Unrestricted Fund for Marshall.

The Marshall Community Foundation believes that philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the
common good, and is essential to the quality of life in Calhoun County. To ensure that philanthropy
merits the respect and trust of our donors, we declare that all donors have these rights.
To be informed of the Foundation’s mission, of the way the Foundation intends to use donated
resources and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
To be informed of the identity of those serving on the Foundation’s board of trustees, and to
expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
To have access to the Foundation’s most recent financial statements.
To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
To receive appropriate and timely acknowledgement and recognition.
To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and confidentiality.
DONOR BILL OF RIGHTS
To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the
donor will be professional in nature.

To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the
organizations or hired solicitors.
To have the opportunity to delete their names from Foundation mailing lists, and to be assured
that donor lists will not be sold, rented or exchanged with individuals or organizations
not affiliated with the Foundation.

and forthright answers.
Charitable Instruments
EVERY DONOR IS SPECIAL. Each individual, family or organization we work with has unique charitable
interest… and unique financial circumstances. We help you make the most of both to do lasting good work in
your community.
OUTRIGHT GIFT
You can make a gift of cash, stocks, bonds, real
estate or personal property to your community
foundation. Your gift qualifies for maximum charitable benefit under state and federal law.
BEQUEST
You can designate a gift or portion of your estate to
your community foundation, and in some cases,
receive a substantial reduction in federal gift and
estate taxes.
GIFT ANNUITY
Your can make a gift of cash or property to your
community foundation now, get immediate tax
benefits, and ensure that you or a loved one
receives fixed quarterly or annual income payments for life.
CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST
You can place cash or property in a trust that pays annual income to you (or another named beneficiary) for life. After
your death, the remainder of the trust transfers to your community foundation and is placed in a charitable fund you
select. You receive tax benefits the year you establish you trust.
CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST
You can place cash or property in a trust that pays a fixed amount to your community foundation for the number of
years you select. Once this period ends, the assets held by the trust are transferred to the beneficiaries you name. In
some cases, you receive a substantial reduction in federal gift and estate taxes.
“I give, devise and bequeath the following described
assets which ____________ (are the subject of the
bequest; for example, a stated sum or the residue of
the estate or a percentage of the residue of the estate)
to the Marshall Community Foundation, a Michigan
nonprofit corporation. This gift shall be known as
the _____ Fund. (You choose the name of your fund)
If you want your bequest to be applied to an area of
charitable interest or to specific organizations, add
the following: “This fund shall be devoted to the
support of ______.”

Based on 25% income tax bracket, 50% is the maximum Michigan state tax credit. The federal tax savings assumes that the savings
in Michigan taxes will reduce the amount of the State income tax deduction on the federal return of the following year.
TAX ADVANTAGES
Community foundation tax credits are in addition to those available for donations to Michigan colleges and universities, public
libraries, and public broadcasting stations, or Michigan homeless shelters and food banks. Donors should consult their advisors to
assure they receive the best deduction that applies.

• Become a part of your community foundation today by making a contribution! Checks in any amount may be made
payable to and mailed to the Marshall Community Foundation at 126 W. Michigan Ave., Ste. 202, Marshall, MI 49068.
• Call the Community Foundation at no cost or obligation to discuss the possibility of establishing a fund.
• Check with you accountant, estate planner and/or tax advisor for the advantages of making a planned gift, based upon
