The saga of former Philadelphia news anchor Alycia Lane,
who was fired from this area’s
CBS-TV3 about five years ago,
continues…
But they’re not good tidings
for her.
She was again fired!
This time by the Los Angeles, CA station KNBC, where she
was a morning newscaster. She
had been there since 2009.
A KNBC spokesperson softened the blow by stating the station
was grateful for her contributions.

A
77-year-old
former
WMMR-FM late night on-air personality was arrested recently for
attempting to transport a minor
girl for sex.
He is David Herman and he
worked at the Philadelphia station
in the late 1960’s.
His show was called “The
Marconi Experiment”.
Recently he launched an online program that reminisced and
debated about classic rock.
Herman’s arrest was at the
airport in St. Croix.
He was there expecting to
greet a seven-year-old girl. She
allegedly was the daughter of a
36-year-old woman from North
Jersey.
In actuality, the mother was an
undercover agent.
The U.S. Attorney’s office
complaint said Herman had told
the under-cover agent, who Herman thought was the child’s mother, that “he was attracted to young
girls and he wanted to have sex
with the daughter”.
A trial date is to be set.

The criminal investigation
involved allegations he accepted
money to give to charities, promising Eagles tickets in return –
and then not providing the tickets.
He is a former Fox TV-29,
ABC TV-6 sportscaster, and a familiar face on numerous local TV
commercials.
Specific reports said Tollefson
sold Eagles ticket packages for
away games. The payments received were for “his various charities for under privileged children”.
Complainants said they never
received the tickets.
Tollefson is affiliated with
four charities, including “Tackle
Hatred Now”. But none of the
charities are registered with the
State of Pennsylvania.
It is possible they may not
require registration based on
having not collected enough
money to require registration.
The investigation is being
handled by the Bucks County
District & Attorney’s office.

By Mike Mallowe
There’s something inherently heartening in the dawning of a
year that does not end in – 13.
I also have to love any digit
that ends in –14. That was the
number my wife wore on her high
school jerseys back at Archbishop Prendergast High School in
Drexel Hill. Go, Pandas!
Here are few things we need
to remember as we get used to
using that 14, instead of a 13:
It’s painful and just a little embarrassing to see what’s happened
to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
None of the best stories are
on its front pages; they’ve all migrated to the courts where the
oligarchs are suing the pants off
each other.
Former Governor Ed Rendell did no one any favors when
he abruptly bailed on the disaster back when he was a major
part of one of the potential ownership cabals.
No one ever enjoyed the
newspaper’s sanctimonious attitude in the days when print was
large and in charge, least of all
me; I competed against it during my Philadelphia magazine
days. But, watching this debacle
get worse by the week is decidedly less fun.
Mayor Michael Nutter better find something to do during
the next two years, or, failing that,
he needs a hobby. Lame ducks
are never pretty, but there has to
be something useful and relevant
he can get involved with.
This is a cautionary tale: He

marketed himself on his reform
identity and his lack of traditional
political skills. That was refreshing then, it’s just annoying now.
Since he will have almost no say
in who follows him, he has become a less-than-zero variable
in the political equation.
Too bad for us.
Now that he’s running for reelection – and looking weak doing it – Governor Tom Corbett
has apparently map-quested his
way back to Philadelphia.
Now, if he could just find an
audience to talk to that’s not in
the Northeast and somewhat under the median age of 75.
Another Blow for Print
It looks like still another awful year for print communication.
New York Magazine just announced that for the first time
in its history the publication will
switch from a weekly format to
26 times a year.
Ad Age puts it succinctly:
“New York’s decision was informed
by clear media-business trends ...”
This is truly the end of an era.
Not many people even remember it, but the distant progenitor of New York began life
as the Sunday supplement of the
old New York Herald. How many
people even recall when big city
papers even produced purely
local and purely locally-written
Sunday supplement magazines?
Know About “Bitcoins”?
Here’s something else you will
need to worry about this year – bit-
well-scripted quality programming.
That means they are again paying
for good writing and fine acting, as
opposed to cheaping out on more
mindless reality programs.
No one at any network is
emerging as any kind of genius.
But the oldest rule in the communication handbook is still as valid as
ever: quality always triumphs.
His point is simple: when
you go crazy with branding make
sure you understand completely
the limits and the potential of
such exclusive identification in
the minds of consumers and clients, alike.

coins. They are becoming the new
legal tender in the internet world.
The principle behind them
is the same as coin slugs or tokens used in an old-time arcade.
You could only use them to play
the machines in the arcade and
you can only use bitcoins to buy
goods or services on the internet.
There is no real world cash value.
Well, the next big thing with
bitcoins will probably be an entire banking system created exclusively in cyber-space, well
beyond the control of traditional
banking powers.
That will be the future of
money.
After a decade or more of
dire predictions and steep declines, free, network TV has
quietly made a strong turnaround this year.
Even NBC (gotta love that
Comcast Midas-touch) has
reclaimed a healthy share of
prime-time dominance.
So, what happened? Very
simple: the networks went back to
buying, producing and investing in

Just in case you were worrying, Fox TV has announced that its
inventory of ad spots for the Super
Bowl is sold out (as of a month before Christmas, prior to printing.)
“Fox has won north of $4
million per 30-second spot for
the 2014 Super Bowl, according
to media buyers. CBS averaged
between $3.7 million and $3.8
million for the 2013 Super Bowl,
with some advertisers paying $4
million,” according to Ad Age.
Now, let’s hope the game is
worth it and there’s no repeat of the
great 2013 power-grid blackout.
Marketing commentator Al
Ries knows all about the buzz
frenzy attached to “branding”.
But, he still advises caution:
“Management has fallen in
love with brands without realizing
that every brand has a potentially
fatal weakness. A brand stands for
a category. Once a brand becomes
strongly embedded in consumers’
minds, it’s almost impossible to
move that brand into another category. Yet management continues
to focus on pushing their beloved
brands into more and more categories. That’s the myopia that afflicts top management.”
He offers some tantalizing
examples.
The successful airlines –
JetBlue and Southwest – come
to mind, according to him, would
never claim to be in the “transportation” business.
That’s not a category, but
a concept and concepts are impossibly hard to sell. No, they
know and tell everyone through
their brands that they are in the
“airline” business.

Desk Drawer Opens Memories
I’ve had the same office desk for over
40 years.
It was a hand-me-down gift from my
father-in-law, Laigh M. Cohan, after he
had retired. He formerly used it for unknown years at his Aldine Manufacturing
Co., 117-121 Chestnut St.
When I moved my advertising agency
and related businesses into 117-121
Chestnut St after he had retired, the desk
was there for me.
It’s huge.
Probably 4’ long & 3 ½’ wide. Heavy,
sturdy wood.
Six large & deep drawers, plus two
smaller drawers and a long 28” at your fingertips main drawer.
The other day I was rooting in the
main drawer for a pen ( I have a collection,
some picked up at trade shows, some
from suppliers) and I inadvertently saw a
list of my staffers from over 20 years ago,
with their then name, telephone numbers,
and addresses. (Note: Not e-mail addresses. That info was yet to be created.)
I thought I would do this column on
them. Bringing up-to-date, where possible, their lives.
Then my number one administrator,
Kathy Newmiller, now in her 32nd year with
me, told me she had list of employees for
the year ending December 1981.
“Hey, that’s 34 years ago.”
I decided to a full column on them –
later.
“What else is in this drawer” I queried
myself.
I decided to look.
The contents gave me the idea for
this column.
So here I go:
At the back of the drawer was an
imitation leather-covered 5” x 3” booklet
recording my stock market trades – in
1961 & 1962.
I don’t think I’ve looked at that booklet in almost 50 years. The first entry is 12/12/61. The stock
is Pioneer Home Life. To the best of my
knowledge, the firm is long out of business.
The second is Citizens & Southern
Bank. That company, also, is long gone.
(Note: In those days my dollar investments were minimal.) I didn’t have much
disposable income.
The third listing was Sinclair Oil. That’s
still in my possession – and is a winner.
Then came more losers:
… Colorado Fuel & Iron
… Consolidated Sun Ray
… Tri-Metal. This was a Pennsauken,
NJ manufacturer of soft ice cream
trucks. Tri Metal is history. It was also a
client of my ad agency. (Be aware I had
nothing to do with the firm’s demise.)
Another ad agency client of that approximate time was Exter Hall, a Northeast Philadelphia nursing home. The owner asked me to invest. Not a large amount.
I did. He later sold the facility – and my
small share became worthless.
I recognize most of the above amateur investments ended up negative. But Sinclair Oil made it all up – and
then some. It’s now BP.
The lesson here is “Diversity!” One
winner out of several purchases can make
it all worthwhile. One Time Shopper
Another item at the back of the
drawer was a credit card from Lord & Taylor. It’s never been used.
I received it when I had to make an
almost last minute birthday purchase for
my wife, Sandy.
The sales girl told me there would be
a discount on the purchase if I signed up
for the credit card.
I did. I got the discount. And then
forgot I had the card. Never used it again.
Measuring A Forgotten Time
A metal ruler.
It shows pica’s and points.
It has been in my possession for over
57 years.
It is 24” long, and has another measurement from 0 to 61, atop the 0 to 24”
marking.
I think it might be picas or points.
That is how newspapers used to
measure the size of ads; plus the size of
type for stories and headlines.
(I used to be able to give a more definitive description.)
How did I obtain it the year I went into
business? ... I don’t remember.
But I do remember I had one just like
it when I was 19 and had the job of editor
of The Inquirer’s first employee magazine,
“Home Edition”. Note: Dave Podvey, Inquirer Promotions Manager of that time,
graciously reproduced several years of
the “Home Edition” magazine in a hardcover bound “book”. I still have it.
Model Daughter
Many (Many, Many) years ago I used
my daughter, Yelane, as a model in an ad
for Gumas Brothers, one of my accounts,
also now out of business (Not my doing).
The owner, Paul Gumas, died. He was a
good man.
There in the drawer, under family photos I had placed into an album (which I never put together) was a Gumas advertising
pamphlet featuring “Yane’s” photo.
Today ”Yane” is the mother of three.
Their age will not be noted, nor hers.
Joe Ball
What Happened To U.S. Mail?
Another item that gave me a smile
was a memo I wrote to myself.
Evidently I did so 10-15 years ago.
Here it is:
How to send an Ad thru email:
1) Turn on the computer
2) Double click on Microsoft Word
3) Make the Ad
4) After you finish making the Ad click
on the email icon on the top right
hand of the menu bar
5) Enter the address either from the address book or by typing the address
6) Click on send button
7) The email will be sent through Outlook express
When I looked at the above, as I was
writing this, I recognized – I still don’t do it.
But everyone else in my office knows
how.
They’re younger – by a lot.
Oh, one more thing – for now.
There was an Owner’s Manual in the
drawer.
It was for my hearing aid.
I’ve never read it.
What? What! What did you say?
Could you say it louder?
Model Daughter: ”Yane” Ball
