Incarnation Rooted Artistic Welcoming You CAN look at others differently July 10, 2016 Order of Service Eighth Sunday After Pentecost Welcome Our service follows a liturgical tradition handed down to us since the time of the Apostles. Please follow along, and participate by reading the portions in bold. Some people choose to follow the ancient Jewish tradition (see Ezekiel 7) of making a “cross” sign at certain portions of the liturgy. Those wishing to do so, may, at portions marked with a (+) sign. Portions of our liturgy taken from the 2014 Book of Common Prayer for the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). This includes prayers, confessions, and creeds from the past 2000 years of church history! For more information, visit: http://www.anglicanchurch.net/?/main/texts_for_common_prayer. As Anglicans who observe the Church Calendar, we now enter in to the Season of Pentecost, lasting from now until later November. During this season, we reflect upon gift of the Holy Spirit, given to the church on the Day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2. We believe that the miraculous work begun that day has continued through to the present day, and the Pentecost Season reminds us of the intersection between our story, and that of the early church. Ministry of The Word of God Our service is divided in to two sections: the Ministry of the Word of God, and the Ministry of the Holy Communion. The first section primarily focuses on the scriptures, in light of all Jesus Christ has accomplished for us, as they are prayed, confessed, and explained. Opening Song A Tale of Celebrant: Blessed be God, The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit (+). And blessed be His Kingdom, now and forever, Amen. The Collect for Purity Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The people may now be seated The Collect of the Day The Celebrant says to the people People Celebrant The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us pray. O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. (+) People Amen. “Collect” refers to a form of prayer, used in liturgies since the third century, that Christians use when they “collect” together for worship. These traditional words are used to invite the Lord to be present with us during this time of worship, and they serve as an exhortation that whoever leads will be led by the Holy Spirit. Prayers of the People Father, we pray for your holy catholic* church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; especially Archbishop Foley Beach, and Bishop Todd Hunter; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. Hear us, Lord, as we lift up to you the following ministries and churches; That they may faithfully serve you in unity and peace: (Pause for name of ministries and churches) We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; especially for President Barack Obama, Governor Jerry Brown, and Mayor Carol Garcia; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest; Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for those in need. (Pause to mention names) Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. The Celebrant concludes with the following prayer Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, (+) now and forever. Amen. And now, a collective prayer as we reflect upon Orlando, Dallas, Minneapolis and Baton Rouge: Heavenly Father, in your Word you have given us a vision of that holy City to which the nations of the world bring their glory: Behold and visit, we pray, the cities of of the world and our nation. Renew the ties of mutual regard which form our civic life. Send us honest and able leaders. Enable us to eliminate poverty, prejudice, and oppression, that peace may prevail with righteousness, and justice with order, and that men and women from different cultures and with differing talents may find with one another the fulfillment of their humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession of Sin Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. (Silent Confession) Absolution Priest here reads the comfortable words, then says: Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all (+) goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. Absolution means “to grant forgiveness”. The words the priest shares here are Christ’s words of forgiveness to His children. Sign of Peace Celebrant: May the Peace of the Lord be with you. People: And also with you. (Please greet one another during this time. Children may be dismissed for a children’s lesson next door) The Lessons “Charity” -Kenn Gulliksen, 1971, CCLI Song # 114971 Chorus If I have not charity If love does not flow from me I am nothing Jesus reduce me to love Verse 1 Although I speak with tongues Of men and angels And though I prophesy And understand all Although I have all faith So mountains may be removed Although I feed the poor And give up my life Verse 2 Love is patient and kind Love is not envious Not proud but gentle and meek Seeks not its own way Love sings when Jesus prevails Believes and endures all things Love hopes and bears every wrong And love never fails Verse 3 One season I was a child I spoke and thought as a child But when I turned to a man Such ways put aside Though now we see through a glass Yet then we shall see face to face Though now abide faith and hope The greatest is love Scripture Reading Luke 10:25-37 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” Lector: The Word of our Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Lesson You CAN look at others differently Luke 10:25-37 Rev. Joshua Lickter Questions If you have any questions about the sermon and don’t want to ask out loud, please text Josh during the sermon and he will answer them after the lesson. 530-559-1864 Special Song Put Your Hand In The Hand -Gene MacLellan, 1971. Recorded by Anne Murray, Ocean, Randy Stonehill, and others. Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently By puttin' your hand in the hand of the man from-a Gallilee. Ev'ry time I look into the Holy Book I want to tremble (tremble) When I read about the part where the carpenter cleared the temple (temple) For the buyers and the sellers were no different fellas Than what I profess to be And it causes me shame to know we're not the people we should be. My mama taught me how to pray before I reached the age of seven She said, "There'll come a time when there'll probably be room in heaven" But I'm feeling kinda of guilty 'bout the number of times To do what we must do Oh we forget what he said when we figured that he'd still make room Creedal Confession Nicene Creed (4th Century) This creed, drafted at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, responded to the heretical teachings of Arius, who preached Jesus as a non-eternal, created being. At the Council of Constantinople in 381 AD, this creed underwent further modification, in order to better communicate a Biblical understanding of the Trinity. Together with the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed has helped establish the boundaries that define “Christian” and unify followers of Christ for almost 2000 years. Followers of Christ, what do you believe? We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made. Who, for us and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end. And we believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets. And we believe one holy catholic* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and we look for the resurrection of the dead (+), and the life of the world to come. Amen. *Catholic refers to the universal church Ministry of The Holy Communion The second section of our service, The Ministry of The Holy Communion, focuses on the sacrifices and praise that we, and all the saints throughout history, have given to God in response to all He has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Many of these words have been sung or recited by Christ followers around the world for over 1800 years! Offering Ourselves and Our Gifts Christ followers support the church’s mission and ministry through offering a sacrificial portion of our resources–time, talents, possessions–as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace. This pattern presents itself to us throughout the scriptures. (See, for example, Deuteronomy 26; Proverbs 3: 8,9; Malachi 3:10) Many at Incarnation make their regular contributions online via our website, as well as during our worship services. Offertory Prayer Through Christ may we continually offer to God the sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his Name. May we not neglect to do good and to share what we have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. (-Based on Hebrews 13:15, 16) Offering Song “The Anchor Holds” -Lawrence Chewning, 1992 Recorded by Ray Boltz, The Gaithers, and others I have journeyed Through the long, dark night Out on the open sea By faith alone Sight unknown And yet His eyes were watching me CHORUS: The anchor holds Though the ship is battered The anchor holds Though the sails are torn I have fallen on my knees As I faced the raging seas The anchor holds In spite of the storm Ive had visions Ive had dreams Ive even held them in my hand But I never knew Those dreams could slip right through Like they were only grains of sand I have been young But I am older now And there has been beauty That these eyes have seen But it was in the night Through the storms of my life Oh, thats where God proved His love to me The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And with your spirit. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord People It is just and right so to do. Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds our God. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through Jesus Christ our Lord; according to whose most true promise, the Holy Spirit came down from heaven, lighting upon the disciples, to teach them, and to lead them into all truth; giving them boldness and fervent zeal constantly to preach the Gospel to all nations; by which we have been brought out of darkness and error into the clear light and true knowledge of you, and of your Son Jesus Christ. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Closing Offertory Prayer All things come of thee, Oh Lord, and of Thine own have we given Thee. (-I Chronicles 29:14) Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord, Hosannah! Fr. Celebrant: Blessed is he who comes in the Name of the Lord (+) Then the Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: ! ! Mysterium Fidei (Mystery of the Faith) Music: R. Bethancourt; Lyrics: 2nd Century ! ! Em ! ! ! ! G! ! ! ! ! ! D! ! ! Am! Em ! Epiclesis We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also (+) that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. The Prayer of Humble Access We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. John 1:29, Revelation 19:9 Instructions for the Eucharist: The Eucharist (meaning thanksgiving) is open to all who would consider themselves baptized Christians, regardless of tradition or background. As you come forward, you may take a piece of bread, eat it, and then drink from the common cup, or you may dip it in the wine chalice, and then eat it. There is a chalice on the table filled with grape juice for those unable to partake of the wine. You don’t have to know all the answers, nor do you need “perfect” faith. God has faithfully met people throughout the ages by way of these words and elements. Whatever struggles or doubts you may have, He will faithfully meet you through these means of grace. If you find yourself unsure of your standing with God, there are prayers on the last page of this worship folder that can help you. Please take advantage of this time to consider all God has done for you through Jesus Christ. If you or your children would like to come forward to witness the table, but not partake, you are welcome to do so. Just cross your arms, and the pastor will pray a blessing over you. The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people with these words: The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen. (+) Communion Song: After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray. Celebrant and People Eternal God, heavenly Father, You have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, and You have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. (The Gloria Patri contains the oldest known words, outside of scripture, that followers of Christ have sung or recited, for over 1900 years. Traditionally, when the Trinitarian Formula (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) is use, worshippers either bow their heads or make the sign of the cross.) Gloria Patri Announcements Closing Blessing The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, (+) be among you, and remain with you always. Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer of Commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.
