Hannover from its best side!
There is scarcely any other region that can offer such diverse and attractive leisure
amenities as Hannover. You can stroll through the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen or
enjoy the unbridled greenery of the Eilenriede city forest; while the Maschsee Lake
has a Mediterranean feeling that visitors revel in. The meadowlands along the River
Leine entice ramblers and cyclists to explore their wide expanses. And all these
things are to be found right in the heart of the city. At the same time, the surrounding region offers a wealth of tourist highlights such as Lake Steinhude, the Deister
Hills or the charming Burgdorfer Land.

Garden pleasures and history in the Great Garden –
with palace and museum
The city of Hannover owes this jewel of baroque garden architecture to an extraordinary woman:
Electress Sophia of the Palatinate. Inspired by the Sun King, Louis XIV, she had the Great Garden laid
out in the French style at the end of the 17th century; and it became her life’s work. Today, about
half a million visitors a year enjoy the unique atmosphere of one of the best preserved baroque gardens
in Europe. The Great Garden now also boasts a new top attraction since 2013: the new Herrenhausen
Palace Museum – a building belonging to the state capital Hannover and funded by the State of
Niedersachsen – which invites visitors to enjoy in a very entertaining way the enormous diversity of
the palaces and gardens in the fascinating Herrenhausen ensemble.

The rebirth of the historic Grotto
Originally adorned with seashells, crystal, glass and minerals, the Grotto, built in 1767, was an enchantingplace to withdraw to, offering pleasant coolness in hot weather.
The interior decorations were removed in the 18th century, and the building turned into a store room.
Now, the artist Niki de Saint Phalle has transformed the Grotto into a magical work of art full of joie de vivre
and sensuality. It was to be her last great project – she died in May 2002, a year before its completion.
Each of the rooms, lovingly and elaborately decorated with pebbles and fragments of glass and mirror,
overwhelms visitors with their interplay of colour, light and shade. The Grotto is simply a “must” on every
visit to the Great Garden.

In the heart of the Old Town
Here you can breathe the city‘s history: the historic timber-framed buildings of the Old Town are among the
very special sights of the city centre. The imposing Market Church and the Old Town Hall are the most southerly
examples of the redbrick Gothic style which is typical of northern Germany.
Wander through picturesque narrow streets and discover exclusive boutiques and inviting cafés and restaurants.
Among the most pleasant squares in the Old Town is Ballhofplatz, where there is also a theatre, and where openair parties take place in the summer.
A few yards further on you can relax in secluded spots on the banks of the River Leine. On Saturdays, Germany’s
oldest flea market takes place here – an Eldorado for lovers of art and curiosities, set against a historic backdrop.

On the banks of the lake you will find the celebrated Sprengel Museum Hannover. Right opposite,
you can stroll through the idyllic Maschpark to reach the magnificent New Town Hall. Travelling up to
the 97-metrehigh Town Hall dome in the unique curving lift is an experience in itself: from the top,
you can see as far as the Deister Hills. And every visitor who is not already convinced of the fact can

Art in public places
At the beginning of the 1970s, an art project was launched on the streets of Hannover that attracted
widespread attention. Since then, the townscape has been uniquely characterised by the works of
art that are to be seen there, and which in the meantime have come to number 170, including a series
of specially designed tram and bus stops. The celebrated Nanas by Niki de Saint Phalle are splendidly
enthroned on the banks of the River Leine. Once controversial, these three buxom wenches have
long been among the city’s most popular photo motifs.

centuries; the kestnergesellschaft, the Kunstverein (Arts Association) and the Ahlers Pro Arte/Kestner Pro Arte Foundation
are further institutions for contemporary art with reputations extending well beyond the region. Visitors to the Lower Saxony
State Museum (Landesmuseum) in Hannover will find Departments of Prehistory, Natural History and Ethnology, the State
Art Gallery, the coin cabinet of the state of Lower Saxony and an aquarium. The Museum August Kestner presents the
ancient world and ancient Egypt, while the history of the state and the city is recounted in the Museum of History. Wilhelm

Highly varied landscape
The countryside around Steinhuder Meer is unusually diverse, with a delightful patchwork of forests, peatbogs,
heather-covered moors and ice-age shifting sand dunes. Steinhuder Meer has a large bathing beach on its
northern bank, and a bathing island in Steinhude for a perfect beach holiday – especially for families with small
children, because the shallow water warms up quickly at the beginning of summer. So come on in, the water’s
lovely! You can expect a warm welcome to your memorable stay with a large variety of holiday and leisure
experiences all around the Steinhuder Meer. The cultural centres around the lake are the towns of Neustadt am
Rübenberge and Wunstorf.

Enjoy a green paradise
The most northerly ridge of Germany’s central mountain range lies around 30 kilometres southwest of the state
capital Hannover: the Deister. Birdsong, rustling leaves, delightful hiking tracks: nature and culture abound here in
and around the largely beech-covered slopes of the Deister reaching up to 405 metres above sea level. The hillside
paths offer many glimpses of the Calenberger Land stretching out into the distance below, and the many ridges of
the Weserbergland. And picturesque clearings provide romantic settings for a picnic – or enjoy a refreshing stop
at one of the many rustic restaurants. The path is also the goal here – as enjoyed throughout the year by hikers,
walkers and cyclists.

Attractions for the whole family
Walkers with picnic baskets feel just as much at home here as cyclists – for instance, along the Deisterkreisel route
that circles the Deister hills. Each section of the 100 kilometre long circular path can be enjoyed individually, and
boast many attractions in their own right: stately homes, beautiful village churches and half-timbered houses stand
witness to the centuries-old history. Imposing parks, interesting museums, numerous water mills and old wind
mills, as well as the opulent Weser Renaissance architecture, form highlights for the whole family. Barsinghausen
and Wennigsen are culturally and historically famous for their notable monasteries. And the area is also dotted with
fascinating reminders of the busy coal mining that used to take place here.

Marienburg Castle – a neogothic fairy-tale
True love remembered forever in stone: When King Georg V. gave Marienburg Castle to his wife Queen Marie as a
present, he could not have known that it would become one the most impressive 19th century neogothic buildings.
This reawakend Sleeping Beauty castle (built 1858 - 1867) now captivates its visitors with its fairy-tale architecture
of battlements, towers and turrets, as well as the almost entirely preserved furnishings. Marienburg Castle is still
owned by the Guelph royal family: head of the household is the great, great, great grandchild of Queen Marie and
King Georg, hereditary prince HRH Ernst August von Hannover.

Thrilling insights – awesome vistas
Marienburg Castle is open to the public: during the season there are guided tours of the castle every day focussing
on different aspects. There are also concerts and events, and delicious food is served in the castle restaurant. One of
the big attractions is climbing the castle tower to enjoy the fantastic view across the Leine valley and the Calenberger
Land all the way to Hannover.
The former horse stables and coach house have been attractively converted into a restaurant and function rooms for
weddings and events of all kinds.
