Actor James Byron Dean known from Rebel Without a Cause dies in a head-on car crash in his Porsche 550 Spyder at the age of 24 in Route 466/41 Junction, Paso Robles, California, United States.
Dean crashed into 23-year-old Cal Poly student Donald Turnupseed who made a left turn onto Route 41 in a 1950 Ford Tudor. Dean had been extricated from the Spyder's mangled cockpit, his left foot having been crushed between the clutch and brake pedal, leaving him severely injured from the crash with a broken neck and several internal and external injuries.

Earlier that night Eyler picked up Darl Hayward hitchhiking on the Ontario Street ramp to the Kennedy and Dan Ryan Expressways in Chicago with the intention to kill him.
