For three years, Mark Sheridan Academy has been working towards converting their outdoor area into a beautiful garden, greenspace, and outdoor education center. Because of tremendous support garnered from various individuals, such as Alderman James Balcer and Cook County Commissioner, John Daley, as well as a grant from the OpenLands Foundation, the Mark Sheridan Garden Space was unveiled this past fall 2010. To commemorate this event, as well as to recognize their biggest supporters, MSA held a Grand Opening and Recognition Ceremony on Friday, June 10th. Mark Sheridan Academy students and Principal John O’Connell welcomed special guests, Alderman Balcer and Commissioner Daley, as well as representatives from sponsors. After enjoying entertainment by the K-5 students, parents and other guests of honor gathered in the Greenspace for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Maria High School community recently teamed up to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis (CF), which is a rare degenerative lung disease that freshman Montserrat “Monsi” Cosio (center), was diagnosed with at the age of 12. Maria faculty members (from left) Mary Eileen Dalcamo, Tracy Duffy-Jarrett, and (far right) Carly Comiskey, who put together a fundraising team called “Monsi’s Mystics,” joined Monsi and her family, sister Alejandra, father Hector, mother Celina, and brother Caesar, at a presentation for the student body to educate about how CF has affected her, and her family’s lives. Monsi’s medical treatment is being coordinated by the Cystic Fibrosis Institute, based in Glenview. As of the end of May, Monsi’s Mystics had surpassed their original goal and had raised over $3,000 benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by purchasing T-shirts that Monsi designed, generously donating at the school’s annual Charity Day, and securing online donations for CFF’s Great Strides Walk held on Saturday, May 14. Fundraising by Monsi’s grade school, Stevenson Elementary, was included in the total amount raised by Maria High School for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help fund research in finding a cure for CF. Elements of jazz, hardcore, classical, reggae, doom metal and calypso will be used to accompany one of Chaplin's most famous films and surely his most politically conscious movie. This treacherous tale features the lovable tramp and trampette teaming up and trying to scrape by during the great depression. Faced with poverty, unemployment, corrupt bosses, and police repression, this comedy remains provocative today as it was almost 80 years ago. Come out and support something a little different.
