Armour School News While studying the fall season Armour students went on a Senses Scavenger Hunt. They could SEE the beautiful red, yellow, and orange simple and compound leaves. They could HEAR the dried, crunchy leaves as they walked as well as the geese honking overhead. They could SMELL the pine needles and TOUCH the rough, bumpy texture of a pine cone. The students did find seeds and berries for the birds to TASTE, but the apple juice and pumpkin muffins they found back in the classroom appealed to all of their senses! Andy, Aracely, Irene, and Layla enjoy the Senses Scavenger Hunt. Festivities will include hot chocolate, marshmallow roasting, and holiday music. Distribution begins at 1pm and will continue until all of the trees have been given away. The trees have been donated by the Chicago’s Christmas Tree Ship Committee and arrive in Chicago over the waters of Lake Michigan on The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw. So if you find yourself facing a Christmas without a tree, then you are so welcome to come by and pick one out. There is a limit to how many trees we will have. You can mail a request for a tree and we will try to reserve one for you. Otherwise just come share a special day with us at Benton House and celebrate with good cheer this tiny miracle of the human spirit. We are located at 3052 S. Gratten Avenue one block east of Loomis across the street from Bosley Park. For more information about this program or any other program at Benton House please call us at 773-927-6420. The St. Gabriel School Junior Varsity Football Team coached by Pat McCarthy and his dedicated assistants played in the final championship game on November 8, 2009 at St. Rita High School. They met and talked with teachers and students alike, as this was their first visit to Holden. McAuley Adds LaCrosse Team to List of Athletic Sports Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School President/Principal Dr. Christine Melone and Athletic Director Laurie Jakubczak are pleased to announce the addition of lacrosse to McAuley's athletics program starting in the 2010-11 academic year. It's the first sport added at McAuley since golf began in 2002. "We are very excited to be adding lacrosse to our list of sports," said Dr. Melone. "We began looking into having a team after our students showed such a strong interest in playing the sport, and we feel lacrosse will be a positive addition to McAuley's outstanding athletic program." In October, the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced that it had elected to add lacrosse to their official list of high school sports for both boys and girls in 2011. McAuley will begin their lacrosse program this year by offering JV and freshmen club teams. With the addition of lacrosse, Mother McAuley now offers its student-athletes eleven sports to choose from including basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and water polo. "Lacrosse is a growing sport, particularly in the past 10 years," said Jakubczak. "As the only all-girls school in the area to be adopting the sport, adding lacrosse not only offers more opportunities for our student-athletes, but will open doors for future students interested in the sport as well." According to the Illinois High School Women's Lacrosse Association, the appeal of lacrosse in Illinois has risen tremendously with more players being recognized nationally and continuing on to play at the college level. Not only does being sick increase blood glucose levels, but it also typically prohibits proper nutrition and eating habits. Having diabetes can make the immune system more susceptible to severe cases of the flu. Wash your hands frequently. Carry and use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not readily available. Continue to take your diabetes medications (pills or insulin) even if you are unable to eat. Contact your physician or pharmacist and see if he or she recommends taking additional insulin. Test your blood glucose every three to four hours. When you are sick you feel lousy regardless of blood sugar levels, making it difficult to identify blood sugar highs and lows. If your blood glucose is lower than 60 mg/dL or remains more than 300 mg/dL, call your doctor or go to the hospital. Be sure to select a medication that is very low in sugar. Weigh yourself daily while you are ill. Losing weight without actively trying can be a sign of high blood glucose. Drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated, but stay away from drinks with caffeine or those high in sugar. Try to eat as much as you usually do. If you are having a hard time eating or keeping down solids, eat soft foods and consume the same number of carbohydrates you typically do when you are well and remember to check your ketones. During a time of economic despair, people are becoming less able to afford quality health insurance. Yet, it seems the less you can afford it, the more you need it. What if you were so healthy that you never needed to foot another hospital bill? Or never needed to spend your bonus on your children’s prescription medications? That’s the principle behind preventive health care: Rather than investing resources to fix the problem after it has occurred, invest in the preventing the problem altogether. “Pay a little more for organic foods now, and pay a lot less in medical co-pays later,” says Joseph Sweere, DC, DABCO, DACBOH, FICC, a professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University. “Currently, the U.S. pays approximately $3 billion per year for prescription medications. Preventing illness and injury will save you money.” According to Dr. Sweere, there are five ways preventive health care can save you some cash: 1.Put in $1 and get back $7. Studies show that companies who invest in wellness care for their employees are more profitable. According to the “Journal of Organizational Excellence,” the Johnson & Johnson Ca rS company received a 7:1 return after fully implementter eo ing their health and wellness programs. Employees reduced their health risks and sick time, while the company lowered its health care costs. 2.Go green. The buzzword is catching on for a rea•TV son. Your body is easily impaired when your stress levels are high and it is more likely that you will become ill. “Stress needs to be taken care of,” says Dr. Sweere. Spending a little money on a massage, a gym membership, or herbal supplements may help to keep your stress levels in check, while keeping your medical bills at bay. When we start caring for our health, we can stop paying for our diseases. Rather than taking pain killers for a pulled muscle, keep your muscles strong with appropriate exercise so they don’t get pulled in the first place. “Care enough about yourself to preserve your body,” says Dr. Sweere. JOHN W. MORAVEC In Loving Memory of November 21, 1936 to March 13, 2009 ON YOUR FIRST BIRTHDAY IN HEAVEN A WONDERFUL AND LOVING HUSBAND, FATHER AND GRANDPA Loving and kind in all your ways Upright and just to the end of your days; Sincere and true in your heart and mind, A beautiful memory you left behind. You had a nature we could not help loving, A heart that was purer than gold, And to those of us who loved you, Your memory will never grow cold. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LOVE, JOANNE, JOHN & MICHELE MARY JO & JEFF, CLAIRE, LEA, MADELYN, MICHAEL AND RO. WE LOVE AND MISS YOU SO VERY MUCH Santa Lucia Kindergarteners, Natalia Aureilo and Morgan Helding, enjoying homemade soup together. On November 10th, Santa Lucia kindergarteners made soup together from scratch in their classroom. The class had been reading the book, “Stone Soup,” which is an old folk tale. Each child brought an ingredient to add to the soup, which showed them the importance of sharing and community. The children cut up the vegetables, measured them and cooked the soup in a crock pot. It also taught the children about growing vegetables and the importance of healthy foods. The children shared the homemade soup with the 1st & 2nd grade classes and it was a huge hit!
