Chairman’s Report
Club Hockey
Eleven men’s teams played in 2015, unchanged from 2014. Eight women’s teams
registered and a ninth team entered part way through the season, unchanged from 2014.
• A composite men’s team played in the Manawatu Club competition (0top four).
• The men’s M1 competition played on Tuesday night.
• A post season survey was sent out to 434 Players for whom the survey related to.
• 56% of ranked the competition structure ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ and 20%
‘unsatisfactory’.
• 50% wanted ‘competitive’ hockey and would travel.
• 20% were ‘social’ unwilling to train.
• Many felt that the women’s competition met the needs of the playing community.
This spread from ‘future elite’, through ‘competitive social’ to ‘social’ across a small
number of teams poses challenges when designing competitions. No major changes
are envisaged for 2016, but discussions will be held with clubs and secondary schools
about restructuring in 2017 and beyond to better cater for the needs of players, umpires,
coaches and administrators.
Kit Rutherford
Chairman
Secondary Schools
Three secondary school teams played in the men’s competition. No secondary schools
teams played in the women’s competition, although some school girls played in both the
mid-week schools and the weekend club competitions.
• 2015 saw the top two secondary school men’s and women’s tournaments run together.
• NBHS (11th) and HBHS (23nd) played in the Rankin Cup/India Shield tournament.
• Lindisfarne (2nd in Mayhill Cup) qualified for Rankin/India in 2016.
• NGHS (16th) played in the Federation Cup/Marie Fry.
• Iona College (1st in Chica Gilmer Trophy) qualified for Federation Cup/Marie Fry in
2016.
In 2016 Hawke’s Bay will have five teams in the top tiers of secondary school
competitions! Notwithstanding, the Competitions Committee is keen to lift the standard
of hockey in secondary school competitions, and during 2016 is looking to review
coaching and umpiring, the makeup of the competitions, and links between schools and
clubs.
On 6-7th October, Hawke’s Bay hosted two Queensland secondary schools teams for the
‘Queensland Challenge’. Dave Nancarrow and Rob Jones organised the visit and selected
teams to give local players experience of a high level of hockey. Another very successful
visit.
Junior Hockey
We had 130 Funsticks players and 92 teams in our Primary Hockey grades, 13 more than
2014.
In July Hawke’s Bay Hockey hosted the Big Save Furniture Under 11 festival. We are
especially grateful to Lily Salter of Big Save Furniture for generous sponsorship, and to
Board members Rachel Cornwall, Dave Nancarrow and Clayton Elmes who worked with
Matthew Witheford to deliver a spectacular event.
• Funding for junior coaching in primary schools is now through the Active Post Small Sticks and Kiwi Sticks programmes.
• Two separate funding agencies with different procedures, poses administration
challenges.
• Our RDM delivered these coaching sessions in 2015 but in 2016 we will contract local
coaches.
These coaching schemes have been very effective at increasing the numbers playing
junior hockey on Saturday mornings, with flow on benefits at intermediate and secondary
schools. The challenge is to retain those players through school and beyond.
National Representative Tournament Highlights 2015
• Two silver medals at national Premier tournaments in 2015 – U13 Girls (Collier Trophy) and the U18 Girls.
• One bronze medal (U13 Girls Championship).
• Two fourth placings (U13 Boys Premier (Hatch Cup) and U13 Boys Championship (Curtis
Cup)).
Annual
Report 3
The Association
We have a group of young hockey players whose progress through U15, U18 and beyond will
be exciting to watch. The Board is very appreciative of the commitment by coaches, managers,
caregivers and players involved with the 2015 representative programme, and also for the work
done by Joss Prussing and Michelle Francis overseeing the representative campaigns. Greg
Nicol was contracted to run seminars for representative coaches which were well attended and
valuable, and the programme to mentor and develop a group of aspiring coaches is underway.
This Board is looking to extend this programme into clubs and schools.

Hawke’s Bay can be proud of.
• 7–19 April – Affiliates, Furnware Cup & International Women’s

Umpires And Technical Officials
A group of dedicated umpires, parents, supporters and players worked throughout the season
to umpire games, mentor junior umpires, and make appointments. Umpiring can be challenging
and the Board greatly appreciates all those involved notably Adam Simkin and Celeste Jones who
did the club appointments during 2015.
• Lee Erskine umpired at the National League.
• Kahu and Rochelle Olendzki-Shulz umpired at the National Senior Tournaments.
• Seven junior umpires went to national age-group tournaments.
4
Annual Report
• Umpires were mentored throughout the year notably by Alan Blewett and Stuart Ashby.
• Stuart Ashby was Tournament Director at the U18 Boys Association, Rankin/India and National
Senior tournaments.
• Kit Rutherford was Technical Director at the Affiliates tournament.
Awards
Iain Taylor stepped down from the HBHA Board after serving for eight years including a long
period as Chair. On behalf of the hockey community, I take this opportunity to record our
appreciation of, and thanks for, all that Iain has done for hockey administration and coaching in
this region.

Award
• Joss Prussing was awarded the Spark Digital Service to Sport award.
Westpac Secondary Sports Awards
• Logan Gill won the overall award for Officials for his work in umpiring and coaching.
• Sam Hiha and Nicole Strawbridge won the school hockey awards.
New Year Honours (2016)
In the New Year Honours, Neil Edmundson became a Member of the New Zealand Order or
Merit. Neil was instrumental in building the first artificial turfs at Porritt Park, Christchurch,
in 1984 and at Park Island, Napier, in 1990. He played for Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay and NZ
Masters and managed the Black Sticks men’s team from 1990-1998. A reception was held at
Park Island on January 26th to mark the occasion, attended by Napier Mayor Bill Dalton and a
group of hockey personalities.
Administration
2015 has been a year of change in the HBHA office.
Dean Hulls resigned as Hockey Manager in November after three years in the job. Dean
brought his passion for coaching and elite player development to the role, and led several
initiatives including the Hockey Academy and the Hawke’s Bay United team which played in the
Manawatu Competition.
Matthew Witheford resigned as Regional Development Manager to take up a new post at Sport
Hawke’s Bay. Matthew has played a key role over a five year period in the delivery of junior
hockey coaching through the Active Post Small Sticks programme in primary schools.
We wish Dean and Matthew well in their new roles.
In December the Board was pleased to appoint Andrea Cullen to the new role of Community
Hockey Manager. Her role includes leadership of staff and volunteers, organising club and
schools competitions, strengthening links with clubs and schools, and overseeing our Board subcommittees.
Throughout the period of change, our Administration Manager, Michelle Francis, took on extra
duties and very successfully kept the office running. The Board warmly acknowledges Michelle
for her efforts in managing us through a difficult period.
I would like to thank fellow Board members for what has been a busy year. In addition to their
governance role, they have willingly taken on tasks normally undertaken by our office staff
necessitated by the departure of Dean and Matthew.
I look forward to 2016 being a year of consolidation. Andi Cullen has already formulated plans
to improve the club competitions, upskill coaches, administrators and umpires, and streamline
the way Hawke’s Bay hockey operates.

National Masters Hockey Tournament
Over 1500 hockey players descended on Hawke’s Bay for the National Masters Hockey Tournament
in March.
It was the first time Hawke’s Bay has hosted the tournament since 2001. The Park Island Hockey
Stadium hosted the majority of the games and three social functions during the week with the
Unison Hockey Stadium hosting nine matches a day.
The tournament, one of the largest of it’s kind, required three hockey turfs and with the new turf at
the Regional Sports Park, Hawke’s Bay is one of only four regions, that has enough turfs.
Having the third turf at the sports park, enabled us to bid and win the hosting rights for the
tournament.
It was a a significant boost for the local economy as the 1500 players stayed in hotels and motels
and spent money on food and entertainment over the week. See below the Economic Impact
findings on the event.
The tournament attracted higher than usual interest due to it being hosted in Hawke’s Bay.
We have a reputation for running a good event and Hawke’s Bay is also a desirable place to visit
with plenty of other recreational activities, wineries to visit and hopefully sunny weather.
The National Masters tournament comprises of Mens and Womens 35+, 40+ 45+ 50+ 55+ and
Mens 60+ grades. Hawkes Bay fielded four men’s teams and two women’s teams,.
The Hawke’s Bay Men’s 40+ team was led by Graeme Findlay and was bolstered with the inclusion
of Greg Nicol, a former South African International player who is a renowned goal scorer.
Leading the Mens 50+ team was Phil Teague, a highly skilled player who has played in many
New Zealand Masters teams over the last 10 years. Also in that team was veteran Hawkes
Bay administrator and volunteer worker Dave Smale who has attended every National Maters
Tournament since inception in 1997.
The level of this tournament was as always very competitive and it showcased some very talented
players.
From this tournament New Zealand Masters’ teams were selected for a trans-tasman series
with Australia in May to be held in Melbourne. Phil Teague, Owen Carter, Malcolm Sutherland
were selected for this tournament in their respectitive age groups with Rob Jones named as non
travelling reserve as was Deb Sheard for the womens squad.

Other Economic Benefits
The hockey tournament potentially generated a number of other significant direct and indirect
economic benefits for Hawkes Bay that reinforce and in some cases add to the above economic
impacts. In brief, the benefits include as below:
• Contribution to and strengthening of the important events-tourism sector in the region. The
sports events ‘industry’ is an important part of this Hawkes Bay sector.
• An additional commercial opportunity for regional business suppliers.
• Further national exposure and profile for the Hawkes Bay region.
• Increased utilisation of key regional hockey venues.
• Recreational and health benefits for Hawkes Bay based tournament participants, resulting in
indirect economic
benefits within the region (e.g. labour productivity enhancement).

Report 7
The Association
Secondary School Tournaments
2015 was a highly successful year for HB-based secondary schools who participated in various national
tournaments during tournament week 31st August – 5th September 2015 and this follows on from recent
successes across age-group national tournaments over the past 4-5 years. HB Secondary Schools will have
5 teams competing in tier One-Two tournaments in 2016 with a further 3 sides competing in Tier Three
tournaments in 2016.
With HNZ changing the format of the 2 top-tiered tournaments, the Rankin Cup and India Shield (Boys) and
Federations Cup and Marie Fry Trophy (Girls) to a 32-team format tournament and introducing 3 Tier Three
tournaments offering promotion to Tier One for both finalists (and relegation for the bottom placed 6 sides
in Tier One tournaments) the opportunity for teams across the range of tiered tournament to participate
and achieve promotion has been significantly enhanced. Hawkes Bay schools were represented by 3 sides in
respective competitions.
Both Napier BHS and Hastings BHS competed in the Rankin / India tournament at Lloyd Elsmore Park,
Auckland finishing a credible 11th and 23rd placing respectively and ensuring their place in the same
tournament in 2016. Napier BHS placed second in their pool behind 2014 winners, Hamilton BHS. Drawn
against eventual finalist, St Andrews College from Christchurch, NBHS lost a close encounter 3-2 before
going on to win 2 of their last 3 matches in post pool play including an entertaining 5-1 ‘drubbing’ of Super
8 rival Tauranga Boys College in their final game. Hastings BHS narrowly missed top-16 post pool play after
a highly credible 3-4 loss to the eventual winner, Westlake BHS. They narrowly lost their India Shield Q/F
2-3 to Burnside HS before finishing their tournament on a high note with an emphatic 7-0 win over St Pat’s
Silverstream.
Competing in the Federation Cup / Marie Fry Trophy for the first time in many years after winning promotion
in 2014, Napier GHS also finished a very credible 16th place having placed second in their pool with a final
pool game win over New Plymouth GHS ensuring they finished ahead of a strong St Matthews Collegiate
side from Wairarapa. Drawn against St Cuthbert’s who eventually finished 3rd, NGHS put up a determined
display before conceding two lates goals. Subsequent 1-goal margin losses to Christchurch GHS, St Hilda’s and
Bethlehem College highlighted that there is very little between teams within this competition.
Across the 3rd tier girls tournaments, Hawkes Bay were represented by Iona College and Woodford House in
the Chica Gilmore Trophy hosted by Counties at Pukekohe. As they displayed throughout the 2015 season
including the exciting prem schools final v NGHS, Iona deservedly won promotion to the 2016 Federation /
Marie Fry tournament winning a physical semi-final encounter vs Te Kura Kaupapa o Ruamata from Rotorua
followed by a tense and exciting 2-0 win in the final over a strong Hamilton GHS side. This is an outstanding
achievement and deserved reward for a school with small numbers to select from. Drawn in the same pool as
Hamilton GHS and Te Kura Kaupapa o Ruamata, Woodford House played off for 9-16th place finishing 12th
with a very good win in post-pool play over Trident HS 4-1 before close losses on the final 2 days but ensuring
their place in a Tier 3 tournament in 2016.
In another excellent result for a HB Secondary School side the Havelock North Girls 1st XI won promotion
through to a 3rd tier tournament in 2016 by winning the Kate Trolove Cup in Taupo. Finishing 1st in pool play
the Havelock North girls produced strong quarter and semi final wins before going on to produce an exciting
2-0 win over St Oran’s College from Wellington.
Other HB Secondary School girls sides to compete in National Tournaments in 2015 were Hastings GHS (Mary
Clinton Cup -7th place) and Taradale HS (Rosemary O’Brien Cup – 12th place). It is significant that 6 of the
8 girls teams who competed in the HBH 2015 prem girls secondary competition competed and achieved at
various HNZ tournaments in 2015 and testament to the commitment of both players and those who coach
and manage these teams.
Across the 3rd tier boys tournaments, Hawkes Bay were represented by Lindisfarne College and Havelock
North HS in the Mayhill Cup hosted by Waikato and Taradale HS in the Founders Cup hosted by Manawatu.
Competing in the Mayhill Cup, Havelock North and Lindisfarne both secured 1st place in pool play before
Havelock narrowly lost a tough QF to Rosmini College 2-3 and eventually finishing a very credible 6th place.
Lindisfarne College secured exciting quarter final wins over Western Heights (6-0) and previous Rankin Cup
participants Whanganui HS (2-1) in the process ensuring a place in the 2016 Tier One Rankin Cup / India
Shield competition. In the final Lindisfarne encountered a determined Pukekohe HS side eventually going
down 0-2.
Competing in the Founders Cup, Taradale Boys 1st XI finished second in pool play securing a quarter final
and win over Hutt Valley HS 2-0. IN an entertaining semi final loss to Hillcrest HS from Hamilton, Taradale
showed they would certainly not have looked out of place in the final before losing 1-3 after scored were 1-1
at halftime. Eventually finishing 4th these are exciting times for schools and HBH to see the growing strength
and competitiveness of schools beyond Napier and Hastings BHS winning promotion and making quarter final
/ semi final play-off’s within their tournaments.

Annual Report
In pool play on the Monday and Tuesday of
tournament week the team knocked out two
seeded teams. This meant that we were promoted
for the first time since 2008 into the Tier 1
competition - The Federation Cup.
After many close games throughout the week we
ended up 16th in NZ. The team played with a huge
amount of courage, commitment and enthusiasm
and never gave up at any point.
This is a very young side with six Year 9 players
which bodes well for the years to come.
The MVP for the tournament was deservedly won by
Grace Gibson who led by example all tournament.

Big Save U.11 Hockey Festival
Hawkes Bay Hockey hosted the inaugural U11 Big Save Furniture Hockey Festival at the Park Island
Hockey turfs 16th – 18th July 2015.
The Festival competitors comprised of both local and out of town teams from Gisborne, Oahu,
Dannevirke and Taupo making 17 teams in total entered into this event.
Big Save Furniture kindly donated a screen printed Festival T Shirt for every player along with medals
for MVP’s and round winners. It was magic to witness a sea of blue all huddled together for a Festival
photo. There were smiles a plenty among the players and a true sense of family with spectators in
abundance there to support their team.
The Festival had a very youthful feel to it with Hawkes Bay Hockey age group Representative Players
taking on the roles of Umpires, Coaches of teams and one of our Under 18 Players was the Umpire
Manager – many thanks to you all.
On Day 1 teams played 3 shorter grading games. At the conclusion of Day 1 all teams were then split
into 4 divisions based on how they went in the grading games. Teams were graded to ensure that
games on day 2 and 3 were going to be closely contested. On Friday and Saturday teams played in a
division with three other teams in a round robin and then a final on the Saturday morning to find an
overall winner of each division. One of the travelling teams Whakarewa Warriors took out the overall
trophy with a great final against a local team.
The 3 day event was a joy to host and enjoyed by all present but most of all the players. Hawke’s Bay
Hockey are pleased to announce that their major sponsor of this event Big Save Furniture have signed
on for a further two years. Hawke’s Bay Hockey would like to thank Lily Salter and the Team at Big Save
Furniture for their support of this event.
A special thanks also to Rachel Cornwall, David Nancarrow and Clayton Elmes for their assistance with
the event management of this festival.

Annual Queensland Challenge
Queensland Challenge has been on our Event calendar for many years and a big
part of the history and management/sponsorship of the tournament were the
Greaney Family. We wish to thank the Greaney family for their long standing
support and sponsorship of this event – an event that our up and coming
Hawke’s Bay Players strive for.
The 2015 Queensland Challenge was once again played over two nights which
was full of action packed hockey with Hawke’s Bay taking home the cups for the
second consecutive year.
Thanks to the Coaches and Managers of the Hawke’s Bay Teams for the time and
effort they put in over the weeks prior to this challenge.
A special thanks also to Rob Jones, David Nancarrow and Joss Prussing for the
event management of this tournament.

Volunteer Achievements
Mark Peachey
Congratulations to Mark Peachey, whose contribution
to Hockey in Hawkes Bay has been recognized by Lotto
NZ Volunteer Sport Makers. Mark Peachey has coached
HB Hockey Rep teams for the last three years, and is also
the assistant coach for Te Awa Scinde Women's Hockey
Academy.
Mark volunteered throughout the 2015 National Masters
Hockey Tournament hosted by Hockey Hawkes Bay. Mark
is very passionate about Hockey and is driven by seeing his
players reaching their full potential.
Volunteers make a huge contribution to Hawke’s Bay Hockey
and if you know a person that is really making a difference
visit www.lottovolunteers.co.nz to send them thank you
e-card.
All e-card recipients enter a draw to win $500 worth of sport
merchandise every month. 34 winners will be found every
month nationwide, with at least one of these coming from
the Hawke’s Bay region.
Caryn Paewai
Congratulations to former blackstick and Hawke’s Bay
player and Hockey coach.
Caryn Paewai coached the NZ Youth Olympic Girls
Hockey team to 5th place at the Youth Olympics in
China. She coached Woodford House to 2nd place in
the HBSS Division 1 Competition and 3rd place at the
Festival of Hockey 2014. She works tirelessly with a
range of codes to assist the students and teams achieve
their goals.
