A Message from
the Mayor
On behalf of City Council let me welcome you to the sunny skies of Medicine
Hat, Alberta, Canada.
Medicine Hat lays claim to Canada's
Sunniest City and nestled along the
banks of the South Saskatchewan River
it's also one of the prettiest. Our spring
and summer are exquisite with an abundance of green trees, acres of manicured
parks and miles of leisure trails throughout the city. There's plenty of natural
grassland areas purposely left for wildlife and indigenous plants to thrive, so
remember to bring your camera. You
never know when you'll meet a deer,
fox, gopher or a blooming cactus in your
travels through these lovely areas.
Our community offers a diversity of activities and amenities for your enjoyment.
We have the largest shopping centre in
South East Alberta with thousands of
shoppers visiting each year from all over
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Montana.
Our award winning 700-seat Esplanade
Theatre, Museum and Art Gallery has
some of the most famous names in arts,
culture and entertainment.
An abundance of recreational and leisure
opportunities ensure that every resident
of Medicine Hat can find something they
are passionate about. We have indoor
and outdoor soccer pitches; as well as
the Methanex Football Stadium with
state of the art synthetic turf. Sports
such as figure skating, hockey and
indoor swimming are all at the Family
Leisure Centre multiplex located on 57
acres in the city's northwest. The Family
Leisure Centre also features a wave pool,
water slide, children’s pool and a hot
tub; a full day's activities in one place.
Our Downtown Redevelopment Plan
is progressing and each street will be
undergoing improvements throughout
the next few years. The 600 block of
Second Street SE was the first street to
be given a facelift in 2013 and the red
cement walkways and improved sight
crossings enhance your stroll through
the area's quaint shops and unique
stores.

licensing needs. Our city offers some of
the lowest utility rates anywhere in the
country and no taxes for business.
Medicine Hat offers both public and
separate elementary, middle and high
schools, a variety of denominational
churches, a regional hospital, as well
as several adult-only apartments and

There is a permanent pottery exhibition at the Clay Products Interpretive
Centre. Medicine Hat was the home of
Medalta Pottery, Hycroft China and IXL
Industries. These were Canada’s most
important industrial pottery factories in
the early twentieth century.
Medicine Hat is a great place to live,
work and raise your family. With a population of over 61,000 people (61,180
- 2012 City Census) Medicine hat is a
growing community with many facilities
found in larger cities while still managing
to maintain a ‘small town’ feel. Located
in the southeastern corner of Alberta,
Medicine Hat is an excellent destination for all ages at any time of the year.
Medicine Hat experiences the lowest
combined tax rate in Canada, the lowest
utility rates in Alberta and an enviable

Sports, recreation, community involvement, cultural events, hospitality and

Medicine Hat residents have more recreational facilities per capita than most
other cities in Canada, including more
than 100 kilometres (62 miles) of hiking/biking trails and 250 hectares (600
acres) of parks. There are six first-class
golf courses in the area, three indoor
and four outdoor pools, six indoor ice
arenas, three indoor waterslides, numerous soccer fields, baseball diamonds,
tennis courts, a skateboard park and a
BMX track. If you enjoy ice, water or sun,
there’s a sport for every season.
The city hosts the largest shopping mall
in southern Alberta at 500,000 square
feet, bringing savvy shoppers from
neighbouring Saskatchewan looking to
take advantage of the lack of a provincial sales tax. Many familiar retail outlets
are found just south of the Trans-Canada
Highway at the Southlands Crossing
Shopping Centre, while plenty of
unique, locally owned and operated
stores can be found throughout the city,
particularly in Historic Downtown.

offer access to the regional trail system,

Medicine Hat enjoys a comfortable

Standing prominently across the river is
Saint Patrick's Roman Catholic Church.
The church is said to be one of the finest
examples of Gothic Revival architecture
in all of North America and boasts 170
foot gothic towers.
THE HISTORIC CLAY DISTRICT
History of
Medicine Hat
In 1883 the Canadian Pacific Railway
stopped to build a train bridge across the
South Saskatchewan River, the only river
intersecting the prairie railway system.
With the construction a tent town was
born taking its name from a local First
Nations legend. With the arrival of the
railroad came the Northwest Mounted
Police. They maintained law and order
among the railway workers and the
indigenous people of the area, making
Medicine Hat a law-abiding town.
With the discovery of natural gas, coal
and clay deposits, the town was known
in early days as ‘the Pittsburgh of the
West’. A large number of industries
were established here, under the inducement of cheap and plentiful energy
resources. The agricultural potential of
the surrounding area along with well
established transportation routes also
made the town a viable centre. An economic boom from 1909-1914 increased
the population to over 10,000 people.
During the Second World War Medicine
Hat housed one of the largest Prisoner
of War camps in Canada. Only one original building, the Drill Hall, still stands at
the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede
Grounds.
How We Got Our Name
Medicine Hat inherited its name from
the native word “Saamis” which means
“medicine man’s hat.” A number of
legends tell this story, one of which is

The city’s historic role as a transportation
hub continues to this day with excellent
air, highway and rail facilities. Several
courier and trucking firms provide local,
provincial, national and international
intermodal freight services.
Today, Medicine Hat prides itself as one
of the most economical places to live in
Canada, with its unique city-owned gas
utility and power plant being a major
business factor.
If you ask someone from Medicine Hat
to tell you what they like about their
city, they’ll mention the small town/big
city feel, the friendliness of the people
and how convenient it is to get around.
When you speak with a business person
they will add to that list and tell you it’s
an ideal place to start and grow your
company.

The legend tells of a winter of great
famine and hardship. The elders of the
Blackfoot Nation council chose a young
Blood to save his tribe from starvation.
Setting out with his new wife and favorite wolf dog, he journeyed down the
ice-bound South Saskatchewan River.
After many arduous days they made
their way to the “breathing hole” — an
opening in the ice, located on the river

between what is now Police Point and
Strathcona Park in Medicine Hat. This
location was known as a sacred place to
the Blackfoot Nation: a place where the
water spirits came to breathe.
They made camp and summoned the
spirits to appear. A giant serpent rose
from the misty waters and demanded
the sacrifice of the woman in exchange
for a “Saamis” or “holy bonnet” which
would endow the owner with special
powers and great hunting prowess. The
young man tried to trick the serpent by
throwing the body of his dog into the
river but the serpent was not fooled.
Reluctantly, the woman was thrown into
the frigid waters to appease the serpent.
The man was then told to spend the
night on the small island (Strathcona)
and “in the morning when the sun lights
the cutbanks, go to the base of the
great cliffs and there you will find your
Medicine Hat”.
Aided by the magic of his Saamis, the
young hunter located the much needed
game, saved his people, and eventually became a great Medicine Man. The
“breathing hole” remains open in winter
to this day, and on clear, frosty nights
the ghostly wisps of vapour rising from
the frigid waters whisper to us of the
Legend of the Saamis.

Geography
The South Saskatchewan River runs
through the heart of Medicine Hat. Its
tributaries, Ross Creek and Seven Persons
Creek, also wind through the city creating scenic coulees and steep terrain. The
city is divided into four quadrants and
fourteen distinctive neighbourhoods.
The east-west boundary is Division
Avenue while the north-south boundary
is the South Saskatchewan River. Streets
run east-west, avenues run north-south.

Winter temperatures average -10.7ºC in
January. Autumns are generally sunny
and Springs are mild. Between May
and July the occasional shower or thunder-shower break up the heat of the
summer and bring an average 230mm
of rain each year. In winter, Chinook
winds have been observed to raise winter temperatures from -20°C to as high
as 10°C or more for a few days at a time.
The “Chinook” is a warm, dry wind that
descends the eastern slopes of the Rocky
Mountains in Winter. The term is derived
from the name of the coastal people
that first lived in the Pacific Northwest
region.

With funding of $200 million from
Alberta Health and Wellness the hospital is currently undergoing Phase 1 of
the planned expansion. When MHRH
was built in 1985 the focus of care
was primarily on acute care. Current

Medicine Hat College (MHC) is a public, board governed, comprehensive
community college serving southeastern Alberta and southwestern
Saskatchewan, Canada. MHC is located

Airport (YXH)
The Medicine Hat Regional Airport provides regional transportation services
for Medicine Hat and its surrounding
areas at a cost effective price. It encourages economic, recreational and social

Medicine Hat is one of the only cities in
the world that owns and manages its
own electric and gas utility. Built on a
massive natural gas field, Medicine Hat
has been providing residents and business of the city with natural gas since
1901. The City operates a fully integrated
production and distribution system.
The department operates gas wells in
fields within southeastern Alberta and
in southwestern Saskatchewan. Rates
for gas supply to industries are set by
bylaw or special contract. In addition to
supplying the requirements of Medicine
Hat, the Utility’s service also includes the
Town of Redcliff and some surrounding
rural areas.
In 2012, the Energy Division distributed a
dividend of $37.139M million in support
of City property taxes ($24.5 million),
and a contribution to the community
capital fund ($12.6 million).
Water Supply
Industrial processing water is supplied
by the South Saskatchewan River and an
underground aquifer. The water treatment plant [for South Saskatchewan
River] has a capacity of 205 million litres
per day.
Waste Management
Medicine Hat’s secondary sewage treatment plant has a capacity of 45,000
cubic metres/day. The city’s effluent is
well below the province’s standards.
Garbage Collection
Residential garbage is collected once
per week on a Monday through Friday
schedule. To find out the garbage collection schedule and zone for your area

advances following each holiday.
Garbage must be set at the curb or the
alley not later than 7:00am on the day
designated for collection and must be
returned to your property not later than
7:00am on the following day.
Set-Out Standards
A Residential Waste Cart set out for collection shall:
ƭƭ Be placed in such a manner that
Automated Collection may occur
without collectors being required
to manually move the Residential
Waste Cart in order to allow for
pickup, and without limiting the
generality of the foregoing, shall:
ƭƭ in the case of premises serviced by
rear lane pickup, be placed adjacent
to the lane with clearances of at
least 0.6 meters to the rear and 1
meter on each side of the cart;
ƭƭ be placed on a level surface not more
than 150mm above the road elevation

initiatives that can help improve the
environment and stretch their energy
dollars. Promoting a wide variety of services and programs, HAT Smart helps
residents save on resources like water,
gas and electric, as well as recycling
efforts to reduce solid waste (garbage).
Energy conservation is simply reducing
energy consumption. This is easy and can
be done through either lifestyle changes
and/or the installation of energy efficient
appliances. From lowering the temperature on your hot water heater to the
purchase of a high efficiency furnace,
there are many things you can do. Every
change towards energy conservation is
good for your utility bill and the environment. Many low value investments offer

Cart Use Guidelines
ƭƭ Position the cart so that the
arrows face the street / alley.
ƭƭ Cart must be positioned at the edge
of the curb or alley
ƭƭ There must be a clearance of 0.6 metres
to the rear and 1 metre on each side
of the cart. Do not block sidewalks.
ƭƭ Do not overload the cart (limits as
per the maximum load rating).
ƭƭ Do not place garbage in plastic bags
around or on top of the cart.
ƭƭ Do not place hot ashes, flammable
liquids, oil or grease, construction debris,
auto parts, dirt or rocks in the cart.
ƭƭ Remove the cart from curb or
alley soon after emptying.
ƭƭ Wash the cart periodically
with soap and water.
ƭƭ Keep the lid closed to keep odor
and litter in and animals out.
Cart Placement and
Parking in cul-de-sacs
Because of their shape and varying size,
cul-de-sacs require specialized set out
procedures for automated waste collection. If you live on a cul-de-sac please
show consideration to your neighbours
and park parallel to the curb or in the
driveway on the day of service. The
waste cart should be placed in an open
area at the curb, not on the sidewalk in
front of parked vehicles. When vehicles
park “straight in,” it blocks garbage
trucks, emergency units, and other vehicles from maneuvering.
Traffic Bylaw No. 2434, clause 19(b)
states: “Angle parking in a cul-de-sac is
prohibited between 6:00am and 6:00pm
on any day the City collects Residential
Waste or Yard Waste from that cul-desac in accordance with Bylaw No. 1805.”

The City Landfill accepts residential and
commercial waste; construction and
demolition waste; clean fill; old tires;
appliances such as stoves, refrigerators
and washers; scrap cars; garden and

waste (available to residents only – commercial vendors must dispose of their
hazardous waste through certified service providers).

Tax Advantages
It’s a great combination. Medicine Hat
residents enjoy among the lowest property taxes and the most favourable

income tax rates in all of Canada. On
top of that, you won’t pay any provincial
sales tax on the goods you buy.
Provincial Income Taxes
Our personal tax system is very competitive with low personal income tax
rates. Alberta has no general sales tax
and the lowest tax rate in Canada on
gasoline. The advantage is not only on
specific taxes, but on all taxes combined.
At most income levels, Alberta residents
pay less tax then they would in any other
province in Canada.
At 10 percent, Alberta has the lowest
top-margin tax rate on personal income
in the country. Keeping the top rates
low provides an incentive for people to
work harder, be more productive and
save more. Having the lowest top-marginal rate in Canada is also beneficial
to Alberta when it comes to attracting the skilled workers needed for our
dynamic economy. Alberta’s personal
tax system is not only competitive but
it is also fair. We have the highest basic
and spousal allowances in Canada. This
means that Alberta residents can earn

annual market value assessments as the
basis for municipal and education taxes,
as well as other requisitions such as the
Cypress View Foundation. The goal of
the Assessment Department is to focus
on maintaining a defendable, fair and
equitable assessment base that provides
the basis and mechanism for the equitable general of municipal revenue based
on property assessments and complies
with the Municipal Government Act and
Alberta Regulations.
The assessment of all properties, located

These rules apply to private, non-commercial vehicles.
ƭƭ If you are a new resident of Alberta,
you must register your vehicle(s) and
obtain an Alberta driver’s license
within 90 days of moving to the
province, even if you travel outside
Alberta during those 90 days.
ƭƭ If you are temporarily working in Alberta
but are a legal resident of a jurisdiction
outside Alberta, you may continue to
use the valid registration and plates
from your home jurisdiction up to a
maximum of 183 days in a calendar year
(January through December). However,
you must obtain an Alberta registration
if your vehicle has been in Alberta
over the 183 day limit. You must also
have valid insurance on the vehicle.
ƭƭ If you are visiting Alberta, you may
use your valid registration and plates
(with valid insurance) from your
home jurisdiction, provided you do
not take up residency in Alberta.
However, if you do take up Alberta
residency, you must obtain Alberta
registration and plates within 90 days.

In Transit Permit
ƭƭ To move an unregistered vehicle from
one location to another in Canada,
you must provide proof of ownership
if the vehicle is being moved outside of
Alberta, proof of valid insurance, and
a description of the vehicle including
the make, year and serial number.
ƭƭ A time-limited permit may be
issued to permit the movement of
the vehicle without registration.

Driver’s License Information
In order to obtain an Alberta driver’s
license or identification card, you must
provide proof (i.e. visa, permanent
resident card etc.) that you are lawfully
entitled to be in Canada and proof (3
party residential lease agreement, letter
from Alberta based employer etc.) that
you are an Alberta resident. A registry
agent cannot issue your driver’s license
or identification card unless they are
satisfied that you are a legal resident of
Alberta.
ƭƭ Please note that it is a criminal offence
to provide false information on a driver’s
license or identification card application.
ƭƭ Alberta can cancel a driver’s
license or identification card if it
is determined that the application
contained misrepresentation, false
information or inaccuracies.
ƭƭ If you are a new resident in Alberta,
you must obtain an Alberta
driver’s license within 90 days of
moving to the province, regardless
of whether you travel outside
Alberta during those 90 days.

Alberta Transportation inspects and
monitors passenger vehicles coming into
the province and vehicles that have been
in a collision in order to maintain a safe
highway system.
ƭƭ Obtain a Request for Vehicle Inspection
form from an Alberta registry agent
and take it to a licensed inspection
station, authorized to perform vehicle
inspections under the Alberta Vehicle
Inspection Program. Please consult
with the station regarding their fee
schedule before contracting services.
ƭƭ Vehicle inspections are performed by
the private sector. Vehicle inspection
stations and the technicians that
perform the Out of Province and
Salvage vehicle inspections are
licensed by Alberta Transportation
and will display signage and the
station license at their premises.

perform them. It is your responsibility
as a customer to ensure that you will
receive the service expected when

Museum
Take a stroll back in time through the
Esplanade’s Archives and Museum. The
Archives are filled with an extensive collection that documents the rich history
of Medicine Hat and surrounding area
dating back to 1883. The Museum is a
visual representation of the history of
our area. It features an interactive gallery for everyone to enjoy while learning
about how Medicine Hat grew into the
City it is today.
Theatre
The 700 seat Esplanade Theatre is a
magical place. The state-of-the-art
acoustic design, orchestra lift, and large
stage are capable of accommodating
a variety of musical or theatrical performances. Features include a full fly
tower, orchestra pit, under floor traps,
sound and lighting control booth, box
office, plus a “quiet” room that affords
a full view of the stage. The theatre also
functions as a facility for conferences,
graduation ceremonies, community
events, and large-scale presentations or
lectures.
Located directly across the luxurious
Esplanade lobby, the studio theatre provides a smaller venue for performing arts
productions catered to a more intimate
setting. Also a great rehearsal space, the
studio theatre is equipped with sound
and lighting to accommodate theatrical, music or dance events for up to 140
people. Tables and chairs could be set
up for an informal presentation, reception or meeting.

The Art Gallery acts as a dynamic doorway for the visual arts between Medicine
Hat and the world, through exhibitions,

year, it presents ten to twelve exhibitions of contemporary and historical

Echo Dale Regional Park is an oasis to
both people and wildlife and has more

Interconnected with Strathcona Island
Park, this man-made area features picnic areas, a camp kitchen, two ball
diamonds, a horseshoe pitch, playground area, a tennis court, and fitness
trails. Located adjacent to the South
Saskatchewan River, the park is a convenient location for boating and is
also near the Strathcona Centre where
there is swimming and tennis. The location offers a great view of the South
Saskatchewan River.

This recreational area offers five kilometres of walking trails along the South
Saskatchewan River from the Medicine
Hat Public Library to Strathcona Island

the South Saskatchewan River and several stunning view points.

The British Army Training Unit Suffield
(BATUS) is a British Army unit located
at the vast training area of Canadian
Forces Base Suffield. BATUS is the British
Army's largest armoured training facility
and it can accommodate live-firing and
tactical effect simulation (TES) exercises
up to battle group level.
Medicine Hat is the home to the South
Alberta Light Horse, or SALH for short,
which is an army reserve unit. The SALH
has a long history of over 100 years
in length and took part in the NorthWest Rebellion. It has participated in
both the First and Second World Wars,
and currently has members serving in
Afghanistan.

was a 1937 graduate of the University
of Alberta’s Mining and Metallurgical
Engineering program. He sometimes
worked for the Geological Survey of
Canada during his summer breaks,
and in 1935 under the direction of
Alfred W. Jolliffe, Campbell mapped
the Yellowknife, Northwest Territories
area following numerous gold strikes
in 1933 and 1934. In 1967 he pursued
a career as a world traveling consulting
geologist. He died in 1978 in Spokane,
Washington.

Terri Clark
Internationally renowned country music
artist who has had success in both
Canada and the United States. Clark’s
albums have accounted for more than
twenty singles, including six Number
Ones. “If I Were You”, “Poor Poor Pitiful
Me”, “Emotional Girl” and “In My Next
Life” all topped the country charts in
Canada, “Girls Lie Too” reached Number
One only in the U.S., and “You’re Easy

Glen Edwards
Test pilot for the U.S. Air Force, and is
the namesake of Edwards Air Force
Base. A tribute plaque at the Air Force
Flight Test Center commemorating his
achievements reads: “A pioneer of the
Flying Wing in the western skies, with
courage and daring unrecognized by
himself.” In 1995, Edwards was posthumously inducted into the Aerospace
Walk of Honor.
Daniel Federkeil
Played college football at Calgary and
was an American football offensive
tackle for the Indianapolis Colts of the
National Football League. He was originally signed by the Colts as an undrafted
free agent in 2006.
Kevin Foreman
GM of GeoAnalytics INRIX. Formerly he
founded Bevy, Inc. a Seattle-based company as entrepreneur-in-residence at

Bruno Gerussi
Canadian television actor, best known
for his portrayal of ‘Nick Adonidas’
in the lead role of the CBC series The
Beachcombers. He also hosted CBC’s
daily cooking-talk show Celebrity Cooks
in the late 1970s. Gerussi received a
Gemini Award nomination for Best
Performance by a Lead Actor in a
Continuing Dramatic Role in 1990 for
the final season of The Beachcombers.
He won the Geminis' Earle Grey Award
posthumously for lifetime achievement
in 1996.
Corey Hirsch
A National Hockey League goaltender.
He spent the majority of his NHL career
with the Vancouver Canucks. Hirsch was
the goaltending consultant for Hockey
Canada where he was a member of the
coaching staff which won gold medals at the 2007 and 2008 World Junior
Championships and the 2008 Under-18
World Championships. He has represented Canada on numerous occasions,
playing in over 100 games internationally

including the Olympics, the IIHF World
Championships, three Deutschland Cups
and two Spengler Cups. He was a member of Team Canada that won the silver
medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics. He
is currently the goaltending coach for
the St. Louis Blues.
Mike Hudema
Canadian activist who has worked
for advocacy organizations including Greenpeace, the Rainforest Action
Global
Exchange,
the
Network,
University of Alberta Students’ Union,
and the Ruckus Society. Best known
for his work opposing the development
of the Alberta oil sands, but has also
engaged in civil liberties and student
activism, and has sought elected office
as an Alberta New Democratic Party
candidate. He is the published author of
a book on direct action tactics.
Gordie Johnson
Best known as the vocalist and guitarist for the reggae-rock band Big Sugar,
and later the southern rock band Grady,
where he now uses the nickname
"Grady" Johnson. Gordie is also the
bassist for the blues rock band Wide
Mouth Mason, and has produced several albums for other artists including
The Trews, Gov’t Mule and Reel Big Fish

Dick Johnson
A glider pilot, aeronautical engineer
and prolific writer of articles for gliding magazines. He was an 11 time U.S.
National Champion glider pilot, 9 time
US Soaring Team pilot at the Soaring
World Championships, held two World
Gliding Records and is a member of the
US Soaring Hall of Fame. He flew for
70 years and logged over 14,000 flying
hours, including over 10,000 hours of
non-powered flight time in sailplanes.
He authored over 100 articles on soaring and flight tests of gliders.

He has written fifteen books and contributed to historical journals in Alberta,
Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Some
of his poems were set to music by the
late Dr. Violet Archer and performed
in Banff, Edmonton and on CBC Radio.
He has provided research materials to

Enemy Within’ and History Television’s

Matt Keetley
Began his major junior career in 2003–
04 with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the
Western Hockey League (WHL). He initially began the season in the Alberta
Midget Hockey League, but took over as
the starting goalie for the Tigers during
the 2004 WHL playoffs, subsequently
leading the club to a President’s Cup
championship. In Keetley’s draft year, he
led the WHL with a 1.66 goals against
average and a .933 save percentage.
He was drafted in the fifth round of the
2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary
Flames.
Arthur Kent

Trevor Linden
Retired Canadian professional ice
hockey player. He played centre and
right wing with four different teams:
the Vancouver Canucks, New York
Islanders, Montreal Canadiens, and
Washington Capitals. Before joining
the NHL in 1988, Linden helped the
Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western
Hockey League (WHL) win consecutive Memorial Cup championships. In
addition to appearing in two NHL AllStar Games, Linden was a member of
the 1998 Canadian Olympic team and
participated in the 1996 World Cup of
Hockey. Off the ice, Linden has taken
an active role in charities, and was
awarded the King Clancy Memorial
Trophy for leadership on the ice and
humanitarian contributions off the ice
in 1997, as well as the NHL Foundation
Player Award in 2008. After 19 seasons
in the NHL, Linden retired on June 11,
2008, twenty years to the day after
he was drafted into the NHL. Linden’s
jersey number 16 was retired by the
Canucks on December 17, 2008, the
second number retired by the team.
Richard Link
Composer, musical director, teacher,
and performer, Richard Link is now living
in London. An accomplished pianist, he
often directs music, conducts, and plays

Susan Nattrass
An Olympian competitive shooter who
competed at six Olympic Games in 1976,
1988, 1992, and 2000 to 2008. She is
one of only sixteen shooters worldwide to compete in at least six Olympic
Games. She owns and runs the Puget
Sound Osteoporosis Center, where she
studies the effects of aging in bones on
active sportswomen in their forties and
older.
Jess C. Nowicki
Inductee in the Railroad Hall of Fame in
2006. A third generation railroader, Jess
spent his life educating and promoting
the Canadian Pacific Railway. He spent
his career working for the railway as

Chris Osgood
With the Medicine Hat Tigers from
1989-1991. He began his 14-year NHL
career with the Detroit Red Wings, then
suited up for the New York Islanders
and the St. Louis Blues before returning to Detroit in 2005. He won three
Stanley Cup championships, all with the
Red Wings, with two of them coming
while he was the starting goaltender. He
was known in Detroit by his nicknames
“Ozzie,” which was chanted by the
crowd after a big save, and “The Wizard
of Oz.” Chris retired in 2011.
Kalan Porter
Singer-songwriter and the winner of the
reality television series Canadian Idol in
season 2. He started to sing at an early
age and is classically trained, playing several instruments, most notably, the violin
and viola. He writes and arranges violin
solos for many of his songs. Kalan’s first
single “Awake in a Dream” is the best
selling debut single for a Canadian artist to date and has been certified 8x
Platinum by the Canadian Recording
Industry Association. He is also the 2nd
highest selling solo Canadian Idol singer.

Skater with Canadian relay team. Liam
began speed skating at the age of 8,
and has medalled in numerous international events. Liam set the Canadian
record for the 500m event in 2009, also
unofficially breaking the world record

(Named after John Palliser,
leader of the 1857-1859
survey expedition). This triangular-shaped area is a largely

The Alberta Gaming and Liquor
Commission (AGLC) is an agent of the
Government of Alberta and consists
of a Board and a Corporation. The
AGLC Board develops policy, conducts
hearings, and makes licensing and registration decisions to ensure that Alberta’s
liquor and gaming industries are well
regulated and well managed to benefit the people of the province. It also
ensures the powers and duties of the
AGLC are carried out.
Standards and Guidelines
ƭƭ Advertising should encourage the
legal, moderate, safe and responsible
consumption of liquor and discourage
abusive drinking patterns.
Dog Bylaw
A Dog Owner’s Responsibilities:
ƭƭ A licensee shall not permit competitions,
contests, draws, giveaways or similar
promotions in the licensed premises
which require the purchase and/
or the consumption of alcohol.
Medicine Hat
Smoking Bylaw
The Smoking Bylaw stipulates that no
person shall smoke:
ƭƭ inside a building;
ƭƭ within three (3) metres of an entrance
or exit to a building or within
three (3) metres of a ventilation
system air intake for a building;
ƭƭ on a balcony of a building;
ƭƭ in an outdoor area of a restaurant
or drinking establishment such as
a patio, where consumption of
food or beverages is allowed;
ƭƭ inside a public vehicle (school bus, taxi,
City-owned vehicle, transit bus, or
other vehicle that transports people for
a fee or as a complimentary service)
ƭƭ Keeping your dog on a leash at all
times, except in designated exercise
areas is an absolute obligation. If you
love your dog, you simply will not do
it any other way. Unleashed dogs get
into fights, get injured or killed by
other animals and get run down by
vehicles. They also wander over other
people’s private property, dig holes,
defecate and urinate on lawns, parks
and playgrounds, overturn garbage
cans and create excessive noise. Such
activities rightfully distress many people
and create neighbourhood tensions.
ƭƭ When you exercise your dog in a
designated off leash area keep it under
control at all times. Wait two full
hours after feeding your pet before
you take it for a walk. Most dogs will
have had a bowel movement within
that period of time. Train your dog to
use your backyard for that purpose
and carry a number of plastic bags
to pick its dropping from all other
private and public lands. Irresponsible
owners, who do not pick up after
their pets, offend other citizens who
take pride in their own property, City
parks and playgrounds. Such pet
owners are also in violation of the
Bylaw which carries heavy penalties.
ƭƭ Minors (under 18) are prohibited from
purchasing alcohol and from entering
age controlled establishments.
ƭƭ A licensee and staff should ensure
service practices help detect
an intoxicated person(s).
ƭƭ Intoxicated patrons should be
refused liquor service.
ƭƭ Licensees must support AGLC’s
minimum drink price policy,
and continue to price and
serve liquor responsibly.
ƭƭ Premises should be safe and
properly maintained.
ƭƭ Prohibit activities that may
cause personal injury.
ƭƭ Given that intoxication impairs reflexes
and motor function, consideration
should be given to reducing hazard
areas in the layout and design of
premises (for example, lighting,
space for traffic flow, stairs, etc.).
ƭƭ A responsible alcohol use program
should be implemented to help
reduce impaired driving (example:
Designated Driver Program).
ƭƭ Implement house policies, practices and
supervision to reduce the risk of patron
assault (example: maintaining incident
logs, adequate supervision and security).
ƭƭ Keep capacity within the
occupant load maximum.

problems can be trained; seek
advice from your veterinarian about
recommended obedience schools.
Cypress
County
ƭƭ Every dog born should be planned for,
wanted and loved; not the result of
irresponsible dog ownership. Unless you
are a breeder of quality, pedigreed dogs,
and have a consistent and responsible
market for litters, it is absolutely
necessary that you spay or neuter
your pet. Ideally, this should happen
before the pet reaches six months of
age; certainly before the female comes
into heat. Dog owners who do not
alter their pets and allow uncontrolled
mating are directly responsible for
the suffering of surplus animals in our
community. These surplus animals
live terrible lives - dodging vehicles,
suffering from diseases and freezing
Cypress County is the municipality that
provides services in the rural area around
the City of Medicine Hat and the Town
of Redcliff. Living in the County provides
a country-fresh lifestyle with a range of
residential options.
Urban communities within the County
consist of nine hamlets. The newest of
which is Desert Blume – a resort-type
community, with a housing development built around a premier golf course.
Southeast of Medicine Hat is Dunmore,
with properties typically four times the
size of a city lot. This allows for larger
houses and garages, plenty of room
for outdoor activities and more space
between neighbours. Irvine, about
20km east of Dunmore, has a small business district, a museum and a recreation
complex where the artificial ice is used
12 months of the year.
Scattered throughout the County are
country residential subdivisions, commonly called acreages. These properties
range in size from 1 to 15 acres. Their
main attractions are more space and
the opportunity to have larger animals
in the yard, such as horses. Many of
these developments are served with
rural water co-ops for household water.
Otherwise, water comes from dugouts, wells, or cisterns filled by trucks.
Garbage removal is the responsibility of
each resident so the County has eight
solid waste transfer stations conveniently located near hamlets.
Many of the acreages are located southwest of Medicine Hat near Highway
3. This is an intensive agriculture area
thanks to irrigation. High value crops are
grown in this area, such as alfalfa hay,
timothy hay, beans, canola and potatoes.

provide the moisture. Typical crops in
the area include peas, chickpeas, mustard, wheat, crested wheatgrass and
native grass pastures.
Recreational opportunities can be found
in the Cypress Hills Inter-Provincial Park,
where hiking, golfing, fishing, boating
and camping are common activities. The
County also operates two campgrounds.
Sandy Point is located north on Highway
41 adjacent to the South Saskatchewan
River while Cavan Lake is at an irrigation reservoir south of Highway 1 near
Dunmore. Community Associations provide more opportunities for activity with
local halls, skating rinks, tennis courts
and playgrounds.
Overall, lower taxes, additional space
and a relaxed community atmosphere
are all benefits of living in the County.
Redcliff
Redcliff derives its name from the
red shale cliffs overlooking the South
Saskatchewan River.
It has a rich history which began in the
1880’s with the discovery of abundant
coal and natural gas reserves. This drew
industries that produced a wide range of
products and helped grow the community. Today, long hours of sunlight and
inexpensive gas have all contributed to
the establishment and success in making
Redcliff “The Greenhouse Capital of the
Prairies”.
Having recently celebrated 100 years as
a Town in 2012, Redcliff has surpassed a
population of 5000 and continues to see
steady growth including fully serviced
residential lots available for sale, with
the ability to expand both residentially
and commercially in the future.

course, Hidden Valley Ski Area, excellent

Schools are operated by Prairie Rose
School Division. A number of grade K
to 9 schools are located in various areas,
but the only high school is located in
Dunmore. Social services are provided
by various agencies in Medicine Hat
through agreements with the County.
Most other amenities, such as shopping

in the city.

Southwest of Medicine Hat along Hwy
887, Red Rock Coulee Natural Area is
324 hectares of badlands, hoodoosand the most striking feature of this
landscape-large, perfectly round, red
boulders. Measuring up to 2.5 metres in
diameter, these boulders are sandstone
concretions believed to be among the
largest in the world. It is an excellent site
for a picnic and a fascinating place to
walk and observe geological wonders,
birds, plants and wildlife.

Located to the south-west at the
intersection of Highway 885 and 61,

the Etzikom Museum and the Canadian
National Historic Windmill Museum.

Devil’s Coulee Dinosaur
Heritage Museum
(170kms / 105 mi)
Located at Warner, Devil’s Coulee is
the site of Canada’s first dinosaur egg
nesting site and new discoveries are still
being made. Take the tour through the
Museum which features a Hadrosaur
(duck-billed dinosaur) nest and embryo,
ancient fossils, dinosaur models, and a
mural depicting dinosaurs caring for
their young. There are great dinosaur
related activities for kids. Then go on a
guided tour to the site where the dinosaurs nested. In the Heritage Gallery,
you will find yourself exploring the
‘more recent’ past, through artifacts and
stories from the most recent ‘early days’
of the Warner region.
