On behalf of our partners, team and subconsultants, we are pleased
to submit this prospectus for design and engineering services.
We are not your typical design consultants. We are a lean organization and build our project teams in response to the design needs
of particular clients. We believe that this model of practice affords
us the opportunity to recruit the best and most relevant talent and
subconsultants for a given project.
February 2015
Independently, we have long, deep and proven record of experience
in the fields of design, construction and engineering. Our varied,
complementary and overlapping skill sets, as well as the in-house
debates that are a normal part of our design process, are a form of
quality control to ensure that the product we offer you is the best it
can be.
We appreciate your consideration of our proposal and look forward
to meeting with you in the near future.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Phillips

[ Process ]
We believe architectural design is craft, not a product. It is the careful integration of a superlative concept with exquisite detail. We are
convinced that great architecture has the potential to be a framework
for compelling human experience and social relationship – both visual
and visceral – but only when its design is consistent, synthetic and
whole. The backstage must be as carefully considered as onstage.
Well-designed buildings adapt to the social, physical and psychological well-being and needs of occupants and end-users. In addition
to being healthy, breathable, durable, efficient and functional, we
believe that effective architecture must also be psychologically satisfying and relevant. Ergonomic design is a first step, but the evidence
from sociology and environmental psychology demonstrate that the
variables that affect the human perception of spaces and their logic
are far more subtle and vast. An important challenge for the architect is to integrate the logical (functional) and phenomenological
(experiential) aspects of a space, and to this end, thorough research
is not an option, it is a given.
§ Lean Architecture
We believe good design offsets the costs of design. Our “lean architecture” approach means that we continually keep the economics
of construction methods and materials in mind as we design. At the
same time, we hold that architectural value and building performance
are not just about style and functional layouts. Our role is to orchestrate the myriad physical factors that affect a building’s economic
performance, productivity, efficiency, energy consumption and life
cycle, as well as human flows and user goals.
§Standards
Working with drawing and procedural standards improves the efficiency of our work and helps to eliminate mistakes and oversights in
the design, coordination and construction document phases.

[ Jonathan Phillips ]
Founding Partner
Jonathan Phillips has been engaged in the architectural design
sector for 19 years. He has worked for developers and architectural
firms in Texas, New York, Austria and Istanbul on projects as varied
as schools, large-scale residential projects, retail stores, hotels, zoos
and hospitals. His theoretical work in the field has been published
in the bilingual, peer-reviewed academic journal Candide published
out of RWTH Aachen.
His practice explores the continuum of architecture, branding and
graphic design, and he focuses on providing clients with a comprehensive and carefully coordinated design product. This philosophy
of design — of a “Gesamtkunstwerk” — suggests that design is best
when there is a synthesis among the concept, function and details:
that each must inform the others. With each project, Jonathan pur-
sues the complex relationships among the built environment, designed objects, social interaction and phenomenology in order to
find design solutions that are engaging, socially-responsible, as well
as environmentally and economically sustainable.
Jonathan believes clients should demand more of architects.
While the form or “look” of a building is important, it is also fleeting,
and a responsible practice of architecture has the capacity to add
much more value to a project by proposing innovative, durable and
dynamic experiences and functions for the occupants and users of
a building. Great architecture is visceral, not just visual.

Atrium Apartments
This design for an residential complex in
İzmit features individual atria for each of the
eight apartments on the upper levels. All the
rooms in the flats have natural lighting on
two if not three sides, and operable windows

are placed to create a venturi effect, drawing
fresh air through the building. Accordion
type windows at the balconies effectively
allow tenants to significantly expand their
effective space when the weather permits.

Shopping Center Exterior Renovation
This 1,5 million TL façade and exterior areas renovation to an 18 year-old
shopping center in Levent is designed to create a stronger relationship between the sidewalk and leasable areas. Continuous wooden
fins give depth to the façade, define the mall as a place and distinguish
the shopping center from the bland office blocks above. The same
motif is used around a new glass entrance and flower-shop kiosk.
Apartment Building
This 30-unit apartment building in the Beylikdüzü garden-city suburb
of Istanbul is oriented toward a park and recreation area that extends
down to the Sea of Marmara. In lieu of the gated-community type complexes prevalent in the area, the design is for a city apartment building.
Commercial development, which lines a plaza with a grid of trees, is
designed with the foot traffic that the adjacent park will generate in
mind. The plaza is intended to serve both the commercial and residential tenants and may be used as outdoor seating for a restaurant.
Micro-apartments
Staff Housing
This staff dormitory, garage and atelier was
designed to support the weekend house
of Mustfa and Caroline Koç near Abant. It
was constructed in 2012. The buildings are
oriented so that their longer façades are
warmed by the southern sun, while the court
between the buildings is sunken to create a
microclimate that catches the sun but is pro-

tected from the northern winds coming up
the hill. Fenestration along the northern side
is correspondingly long and low. A “REMOTE”
wall system was applied, which provides a
well-insulated yet breathable, durable, economic and healthy building envelope.
Designed on behalf of Has+Koen.
Gut renovation of a 170 m² space in a speculative office building in Istanbul. Planning
considerations included the zoning of public,
semi-public, and teaching areas, as well as
the organization of space within an irregular pattern of existing structural columns.
Maximizing value for cost was a significant
concern. Color and drops in the ceiling are
used to articulate the geometric volumes,
and the line corresponding to the tops of
the existing windows is continued around
the rooms, both at the doors and across the
top of niches in the walls. This line serves as
an implied cornice and suggests a continuity
throughout the school.
The challenge outlined in the brief was to fit two, functional, medium-stay flats on each floor of an existing 60 m² Armenian apartment
building circa 1950s – without resorting to gimmicks. The ample
floor-to-floor height allowed for split-level apartments, and beds are
stowed away under the bathrooms to transform the main spaces from
bedrooms into living areas.
After an analysis of the existing brick structure, it was determined that
a new steel frame would be needed within the existing walls, which
in turn defined the loft aesthetic and subsequent material choices.

Rowhouse
This house on a 28 m² plot in Balat near the
Golden Horn has been designed with split
levels to eliminate the need for stair landings.
A high ceiling and tall windows in the living
area compensate for the narrowness of the
space. When opened, sloped clerestory windows in the loft bedroom initiate a chimney
effect, facilitating air circulation throughout
the house. The ground level may be used
as an office, a second bedroom, or as an
independent studio apartment.

Modern Kebab Stand
This design for short-stay apartments in Balat
occupies a row of Byzantine barrel vaults
near the Golden Horn, one of which for the
last 130 years has been home to a candy
store. The design calls for glass façades allowing the Byzantine brickwork and architecture to be enjoyed from the street.
Boutique Hotel
This 16-room hotel in Gökçeada is conceived for Aydıncık beach, an
area newly slated for touristic development. The architecture, materials, and proportions draw on the north Aegean vernacular. The
stepped, splayed arrangement of the larger guestroom building
breaks up the mass, capitalizes on the views, and allows the compact
rooms to have windows along two walls.
Concept Design | Design Development | Built Project
House and Atelier
This one-bedroom house and workshop in an olive grove in the
Aegean region of Turkey is comprised of staggered, parallel walls
set into the side of a hill, such that space is defined by the relative
sense of enclosure rather than by geometric volume. The intention
is not to bring the outside in, but rather to question the dichotomy
of interior and exterior itself. Accordingly, the house has no façade,
and the elevations likewise have no fenestration.
Vineyard House and Guest Houses
From the outside, these one-room pavilions are a send-up of the
Aegean region’s shed-roof, vernacular outbuildings. Cracked open,
they are geodes. The ironic juxtaposition of the rustic and the refined
is deliberate.
The buildings are, in essence, pristine viewing platforms from which
to rationalize the world outside. While the design is serious, it is at the
same time a critique of asymmetric development along the Aegean
coast, brought on by the annual, summer pilgrimages of the region’s
intellectual classes.
