Frank Lloyd Wright presents a stunning overview of the work of this towering American genius, encompassing the entirety of Wright’s long and extraordinarily prolific career. From his earliest work, such as the Home and Studio in Oak Park, IL, of 1889, to the wonderfully evocative textile block houses of Los Angeles of the mid-1920s, to such seminal masterpieces as Fallingwater, of 1935, in the Pennsylvania wilderness, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, of 1956, in New York, the book offers an extraordinarily abundant trove of architectural riches. Featuring more than a hundred discrete works, from the well known to the obscure, expertly discussed in the text of highly respected Wright scholar Kathryn Smith, Frank Lloyd Wright weaves a gorgeous tapestry that will engage the mind and delight the eye. Alan Weintraub is the photographer for Rizzoli’s Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses, Frank Lloyd Wright: Prairie Houses, Frank Lloyd Wright: Mid-Century Modern, Oscar Niemeyer Houses, and The Architecture of John Lautner. Kathryn Smith is an architecture historian, preservation consultant, author, and lecturer. She is the author of Frank Lloyd Wright: Hollyhock House & Olive Hill and a contributor to Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses and Frank Lloyd Wright: Prairie Houses. Frank Lloyd Wright’s wife, Olgivanna, is famously quoted as saying that “My husband seemed to thrive on hardships.” From the years 1920 to 1932 Wright’s fortunes were at a low ebb; he was plagued by financial, personal, and professional setbacks, but saw the time as one of challenges instead of one of defeat. Unable to find patrons, his imagination led to visionary, often splendid, architectural conceptions that laid the groundwork for the revolutionary architecture he would build in the decades to follow. During this period he designed almost fifty projects, of which only a few were realized, but those few are seen today as among his most important creations. They include the majestic Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, four exquisite textured concrete block houses in Los Angeles, renovations and additions to his beloved home, Taliesin, in Wisconsin, the Octillo Desert Camp in Chandler, Arizona, and his work as design consultant for the lavish Arizona Biltmore Hotel and Cottages in the desert in Phoenix. Rare and unseen photos as well as little-known drawings from this period are on lavish display in this important work on the master architect. Author Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer is a trustee of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona, and, as director of the archives there, is the curator of its 300,000 correspondence documents and 22,000 drawings, some of which are shown here for the first time. He has been a member of the Taliesin Fellowship for over fortyfour years, and is the author and/or editor of over forty books on Frank Lloyd Wright. Country living evokes bucolic landscapes and picturesque villages—rolling Connecticut countryside, verdant farmland, the sun-drenched hills of Malibu—and the architecture that echoes these idyllic settings. These houses, ranging from family estates to weekend retreats, are the personal homes of decorators and tastemakers, including Jonathan Adler, Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, and Steven Gambrel. The properties exemplify varied design perspectives and provide fresh ideas about how country living is ideal for creative expression. This inspiring medley ranges from Tony Duquette’s exotic pavilion-style California home to a charming New York Victorian, a modernist Palm Springs desert getaway by Neutra, a nineteenth-century Gothic cottage on Shelter Island, and an eighteenthcentury Connecticut house. Along with design ideas for interiors, the book also covers the garden and pool areas. Since outdoor entertaining is an integral part of country living, a section devoted to tabletop display is included. These beautifully photographed inspirations encourage the reader to explore the design opportunities in the country guided by the best interior designers. Decorator and journalist Annie Kelly has authored many books, including Casa San Miguel, and writes a book column for 1stdibs.com. She is also the editorin-chief of the New York Observer Home magazine. Award-winning photographer Tim Street-Porter is the author of numerous architecture and design books, including L.A. Modern . Inventive, enigmatic, and supremely creative, Stephen Sprouse made art and clothing that captured the mood of the eighties. One of the first American designers to mix graffiti and a punk aesthetic with fashion, Sprouse manipulated conventional notions of style, and his unique sensibility has inspired designers from John Galliano to Raf Simmons to Marc Jacobs. Sprouse’s career started in the late seventies, when, after working for Halston, he migrated to a warehouse on the Bowery and started making outfits for his neighbor, Debbie Harry. The fashion world quickly embraced his innovative, culturally relevant sensibility and downtown edge. But Sprouse’s inability to compromise his artistic vision for the rigid fashion business compromised his commercial success. The Padilhas possess the largest private collection of Sprouse’s work, and were given exclusive access to his archives by his family for this project. They also obtained never-before-published images from photographers such as Steven Meisel, Bob Gruen, and Mert and Marcus. The book features a foreword by the novelist Tama Janowitz, one of Sprouse’s closest friends. Photograph by Patrick McMullan The release of this book coincides with a retrospective at Deitch Projects. The book will be available with four different jackets, each featuring a different Day-Glo color, an homage to Sprouse’s iconic album cover for Debbie Harry’s Rockbird. Mauricio Padilha and Roger Padilha run MAO Public Relations, MAO SPACE, a series of runway shows that coincide with New York Fashion Week, and publish MAO MAG, a bi-annual fashion magazine. Tama Janowitz is the author of seven novels, including Slaves of New York. Berlin is a concept album that represented a brave departure from the familiar sounds and themes of Lou Reed’s earlier solo work, a tragic tale about heartbreak and addiction meant to be played live as a rock opera, in the vein of The Who’s Tommy. But its poor reception meant that plans for a live performance were put on hold until 2007, when, with a renewed confidence in the material, Reed toured with a full orchestra and choir, giving some of the most personal and powerful performances of his career. The tour was filmed by legendary artist Julian Schnabel, a longtime friend of Reed’s who also designed the spare and beautiful set, and whose daughter Lola contributed moving images projected behind the stage. This immeasurably powerful book draws on stills from Schnabel’s film, photographs of the set design, printed lyrics of Reed’s original verse, and images from Schnabel’s projections to tell the twin stories of Berlin as rock opera and as unique collaboration between two geniuses of contemporary art, music, words, and film. The book also includes a rare conversation between Reed and Schnabel. Lou Reed is a founding member of the Velvet Underground and an accomplished solo artist, poet, writer, and photographer. He lives in New York. Julian Schnabel is a celebrated artist and filmmaker whose work is in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum and MoMA in New York, and whose film The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was nominated for four Academy Awards. He lives in New York. The only and official record of one of the most highly anticipated tours of the year. Including a USB drive of previously unreleased music, the book is both a memento of the tour and an object conceived by the artist himself—entirely collectible on its own. Appearing alone on stage for almost the entirety of the show with huge Star Wars-inspired spacescapes behind him, West’s Glow in the Dark Tour is both a musical and a visual odyssey of Kanye as a true pioneer. This deluxe landscape volume promises to be yet another creation of this multifaceted artist and will include his original sketches and concepts; 3-D models and construction of the stage; concept art for “J.A.N.E.”; costume designs (including his Grace Jones-inspired outfits for opening act Rihanna); and blog of his journey. The gatefolds and special edition USB drive put this artist’s innovative and signature stamp on an already visually radical piece. She soared through the “glass ceiling” with style, a unique accommodation of people’s needs, and an infectious enthusiasm that we all can learn from. From her first break at a major New York store to the formation of companies that include Estée Lauder, Aramis, Clinique, Prescriptives, Origins, M-A-C, Le Mer, Aveda, Jo Malone, Coach, and a host of additional leading brands selling on five continents, Mrs. Lauder reveals how her family business became an empire. Legendary clashes with competitors are divulged, including stories of how she outsmarted them with remarkable style, grace, and determination. She describes how she learned to connect with women, the iconoclastic marketing breakthroughs, and the years of incredibly hard work that led to domination of the cosmetic world. She is renowned for conducting a life of drama, but with color and elegance and always with a focus on exquisite detail. In this book, she shared her secrets of good business and good living. Direct, disarming, Estée Lauder was a philanthropist and social leader, receiving many honors including the Legion of Honor. Darren Aronofsky ’s directorial debut TEXTS BY PHILIPPE VERGNE, JAD FAIR, AND HARVEY PEKAR INTERVIEW WITH DANIEL JOHNSTON A lifetime of visual art from an unexpected genius. Daniel Johnston only ever dreamt of two things: he wanted to be a rock star and he wanted to be a famous artist. Amazingly enough, he succeeded at both. Today he is an acclaimed indie music star whose charmingly twisted songs have been covered by the likes of Beck, Yo La Tengo, and TV on The Radio. His artwork appears in galleries throughout the world and was featured in the 2006 Whitney Biennial. Johnston’s pen and colored marker drawings contain a range of characters, some benign or heroic, and others quite disturbing. In his complex world, good battles evil attended to by an assortment of playful characters. Johnston’s world is also informed by his conservative Christian upbringing, and filled with depictions of biblical vengeance and salvation. Looking at his work, we are reminded of Heironymous Bosch as much as DC Comics. Daniel Johnston contains over 150 full color illustrations, many taken from the artist’s private archives and never seen before. There is also commentary and analysis by the Walker Art Center’s Philippe Vergne, alt-rock luminary Jad Fair, and underground comic legend, Harvey Pekar. In the spirit of treading a bit lighter on the planet, a new trend in sustainable living architecture is what is called “microgreen living”—literally the creation of tiny homes where people challenge themselves to live “greener” lives. This idea, which sprang from eco-awareness and the reduction of carbon footprints, has led people to consider low-impact living as a “greener” alternative to ordinary housing. Far beyond solar panels and the use of sustainable materials, homeowners have embraced the concept and have implemented many creative and stylish solutions for day-to-day living, such as a room that doubles as a shower with one swift movement of plexi-glass from a well-concealed pocket door. A tiny house is an experiment of space but also a challenge to simplify ways of life. Tiny Houses brings together an international collection of over thirty prefab homes and living concepts under 1,000 square feet—some are practical and others are cheeky, ranging from treehouses and compact dwellings to floating houses. The book presents conceptual building plans, detailed illustrations, and vivid photographs of the homes, architects, and proud enthusiasts who live in them. How much space is unused and “wasted” in your own home? This book will inspire the reader to think about architecture and interior design in a new and enlightened way. Mimi Zeiger is the founder and editor of Loud Paper Magazine, a cheeky architectural digest geared toward young architects. Zeiger also writes for Metropolis and Dwell magazines and teaches courses at SCI-Arc on urban branding and architectural journalism. With its archetypal open plan and reverence of indoor-outdoor living, the Ranch house is at the very heart of the California dream. When we picture California Ranch houses—the low-slung, informal dwellings that engulfed suburbs after World War II—we are thinking of just one part of a phenomenon that has its roots in early-nineteenthcentury ranchos, and which continues today in houses that are startling and up-to-the-minute. Examples of the type have been called ranchos, ranchers, and California ramblers. They have been styled Spanish, Japanese, and French; Monterey and International; Vernacular, Minimalist, and Modernist. From the 1797 Rancho Los Alamitos of Long Beach to such contemporary homes as the Miller Residence of Corte Madera, Ranch Houses unveils the great variety and the very finest examples of this multifaceted form. Including the work of such architectural luminaries as Cliff May, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Charles Moore, Ranch Houses is an essential resource for architects, home owners, and all those who aspire to the indoor/outdoor lifestyle that is the California Dream. His work is instantly recognizable, with idiosyncratic cartoon creatures popping up in the oddest of places: in paintings, on functional objects, or piled up on top of each other to form huge totem-poles. Richard Marshall helps navigate the reader across the decades of Scharf ’s career. Carlo McCormick’s essay focuses on Scharf ’s fanciful customized cars and installations. Ann Magnuson reminisces about Scharf ’s happenings in the East Village and the club scene. Richard Marshall is an independent curator, consultant, and art historian based in New York. Abstract America THE SAATCHI GALLERY Coinciding with the opening of London’s Saatchi Gallery, this is the most authoritative and comprehensive survey of new American abstract painting. A radical new generation of American abstract painters has emerged in the twenty-first century. Whereas their predecessors advanced abstraction in the shadow of the Cold War, this new generation arose at the cusp of the transition to the digital era and is marked by the traumatic events surrounding 9/11 and its ongoing social and political aftermath. This is the age of “the remix” where raw material is downloaded and “Photoshopped”. Contemporary artists have irony at their disposal and switch to tie-dye aesthetics or psychedelia as fast as they can quote Malevich. This next wave is thrilling. Painted loops, reminiscent of Jackson Pollock, are revealed to be motorcycle skid marks—bringing new meaning to Abstract Expressionism. Even though traditions are “deconstructed” and paintings can echo “grunge”, historical continuity remains. As Max Henry writes in his introduction, “The American Dream does not exist any more.It is itself an abstraction.” Abstract America is being published in conjunction with the opening of one of today’s most important institutions collecting and exhibiting contemporary art—the new Saatchi Gallery in London. 29 Ryan McGinness Works. Joan Crawford’s classic beauty, dazzling confidence, and sheer toughness made her the very definition of a star; her formidable talent won her an Oscar for Mildred Pierce and shines through in other classics such as Grand Hotel and The Women. Focusing on the often overlooked first half of her career, this is the first visual book to reclaim her place in the canon of glamour. Crawford pioneered a new depth that had not been seen before in roles for women. Her domineering charisma gave audiences a new kind of heroine, laying the path for today’s actresses from Meryl Streep to Cate Blanchett. Women—and many men— identified with her in ways they never had before. Drawing from archives around the world and including more than a hundred photos unseen in the past fifty years, Joan Crawford is sure to reintroduce fans to this ultimate Hollywood legend. This intriguing and influential art form began as a fashionable distraction in the eighteenth century—a creative pastime for voguish amateurs and a precursor to the daguerreotype—became a respected form of portraiture in the nineteenth century, and has seen a resurgence in contemporary art and graphic design in the work of such artists as Kara Walker, Tord Boontje, and Ryan McGinness. Cover Photograph: The Kobal Collection Elegant and enigmatic, the silhouette is the simplest of art forms—but that simplicity belies a rich and varied past. In this first major work on the art of the silhouette, art historian Emma Rutherford draws from dozens of American and European sources to create a fascinating history of the craft. The original silhouette practitioners artfully captured their times, shedding light on the genteel drawing rooms of eighteenth-century society, the lives of slaves and free men in nineteenth-century America, and the dynamics and stereotypes of contemporary culture. The silhouette has transcended social and historical boundaries to leave an iconographic legacy of forgotten fashions, creative childhoods, and of daily lives that would otherwise be lost forever, making it an art form of enduring interest. “She was the perfect image of a movie star . . . Tracey Emin has stirred controversy as well as acclaim since she rose to fame as the most highly publicized of the infamous Young British Artists. Though denounced by conservative critics at the outset, Emin’s work has attracted serious critical attention since the early 1990s for being consistently engaging, original, and startlingly direct. Her work has succeeded over the years in many media—from films to appliqués, embroideries, and installations— but it is in her works on paper that the honesty and frankness that have come to characterize her work are most fully realized. AMERICAN COUTURE AND THE CULT OF CELEBRITY KOHLE YOHANNAN INTRODUCTION BY HAROLD KODA A rediscovery of the once-legendary American couturier Valentina Schlee, one of the most important designers of the twentieth century. Valentina was the twentieth century’s first American fashion designer celebrity, working and living on equal social footing with the clientele she dressed (Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Katharine Hepburn, Millicent Rogers, and Audrey Hepburn, among others). One of the few designers who proved that America could live without the Parisian haute couture, her career is a much needed missing link in the history of American fashion. Edited by the artist herself from an archive of work stretching back before the beginnings of her career in the late 1980s, A Thousand Drawings is at once a collection of Emin’s works on paper, an exposé of her life as an artist, and a collectible artifact in itself. Many of these works on paper shed light on wellknown multimedia pieces, previously studied in Works 1963–2006, published by Rizzoli in 2006. Stripped of the distractions of form and context, her bare and enigmatic drawings are presented on bible-thin paper in a uniquely beautiful slipcased volume, with an introduction by the artist. From considered self-portraits to pen-and-ink drawings and informal studies on lined notebook paper, this remarkable collection is as much a catalogue of Emin’s preoccupations as it is a monument to her raw and evocative talents as an artist. Beyond merely turning out show-stopping evening gowns, Valentina’s exotic beauty, dramatic personality, and incomparable style earned her a legendary reputation. Kohle Yohannan explores the carefully constructed persona and lore of this designer who helped define American Couture. Published in association with the Museum of the City of New York’s exhibition Valentina: New York Couture and the Cult of Celebrity, this book includes photographs, never-before-seen personal ephemera, sketches, and original platinum prints from master photographers such as Cecil Beaton, Horst P. Horst, and George Hoyningen-Huene. Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963. Nominated Exhibition Schedule: Museum of the City of New York, for the Turner Prize in 1999 and chosen to represent Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, Emin is also a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. The author of several books, including Strangeland, her memoir, she contributes regularly to The Independent newspaper and lives and works in London. Chris Ofili DAVID ADJAYE, THELMA GOLDEN, AND OKWUI ENWEZOR A beautifully designed monograph surveying the career of internationally renowned artist Chris Ofili. The recipient of the 1998 Turner Prize, Chris Ofili is one of the most important artists working today. Ofili began to garner attention in the mid-1990s with his intricately constructed works that combine beadlike dots of paint, collaged images from the popular media, and natural, if unusual, materials such as elephant dung. Ofili created a unique iconography that married African artistic and ritual practices with Western art-historical traditions and contemporary hip-hop culture. Throughout his career, Ofili has explored themes of race, birth, death, seduction, and salvation on both a religious and a personal level. His most recent body of work employs Trinidadian myth and folk traditions to reinterpret age-old Christian beliefs. This extraordinary book is the first to examine the full scope of Ofili’s artistic development over the last two decades. Extending beyond his painterly practice, the book surveys Ofili’s work in watercolor, graphite drawing, and sculpture. Literary and historical parallels from contributors David Adjaye, Thelma Golden, and Okwui Enwezor explore the ways through which the artist has grasped his times with a palpable sense of history and intellectual curiosity. Chris Ofili was born in 1968 in Manchester, England, and lives and works in Trinidad. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art, London, and the Royal College of Art, London. Devil’sPie, the artist’s debut solo exhibition at David Zwirner, New York, in 2007, was the first to unite Ofili’s work in painting, sculpture, printmaking, and graphite drawing. David Adjaye is an award-winning architect and founder of Adjaye/Associates. Thelma Golden is chief curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. One of the few truly visionary architects of largescale commissions working today, Thom Mayne’s influential firm Morphosis, founded in the early 1970s, has maintained an avant-garde presence among contemporary architecture firms, even as it has garnered high-profile, big-budget commissions from around the world. Since Rizzoli published Volume I of the Morphosis series in 1989, the Los Angeles–based firm has continued to push its intricate modernism into new territories. In the tradition of its four visually groundbreaking predecessors, this fifth volume packs 500 illustrations into a comprehensive tour of Morphosis’s activity. This book features permanent and temporary structures, ranging from one-off museums and exhibition spaces to emergency structures for communities displaced by natural and man-made catastrophes. The forty projects featured in the book showcase the variety of possible applications for paper and its derivative forms (cardboard, fiber-based composites). As flexible as it is adaptable, when used in tandem with other locally sourced building materials or post-industrial surplus (maritime shipping containers), Ban’s singular use of paper knowingly references paper’s traditional uses in vernacular Japanese buildings, and advances modern construction technology, reducing its environmental impact. A number of prominent works from the last decade are featured, including the Nomadic Museums built in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, his work for the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Metz, the Papertainer Museum in Seoul, his pavilions for design and luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Artek, as well as a number of landmark residences in Japan, Europe, and North America. Of particular focus will be Ban’s humanitarian work. Documented in a book for the first time are all the relief projects his studio has undertaken in the last two decades for the U.N. High Commission on Refugees. These include housing for tsunami victims in Sri Lanka and earthquake victims in Turkey and Japan, and emergency shelter for warravaged communities in Rwanda and the Congo. Shigeru Ban established his own practice in 1985, and now has offices in Tokyo, Paris, and New York. The recipient of numerous awards for his architecture, Ban is a professor at Keio University and has taught at Columbia University. Between 1971 and 1979, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood ran a clothes shop at 430 Kings Road in Chelsea that would come to influence and reflect everything we think of as punk. Westwood was an innovative and subversive designer, McLaren an inspiring and unflagging impresario, and together they dictated the tastes and defined the aesthetics of punk youth. Over the course of the decade, their shop became a focal point of the burgeoning culture, and their clothes became indispensable and inimitable monuments to punk ideals. Printing Situationist texts on their fabrics, misappropriating iconic logos, openly asserting an aggressive sexuality, and invoking elements of the graphic style for which Jamie Reid would later be celebrated. Lucian Freud is widely regarded as one of the greatest living artists, and drawing is fundamental to his development as an artist and to how he sees. Speaking recently about his early years he claimed, “I would have thought I did 200 drawings to every painting in those early days. I very much prided myself on my drawing.” Drawing became an important part of Freud’s life from the start and a famous sketchbook, The Freud-Schuster Book, has survived dating back to January 1940, when Freud was in Snowdonia with Stephen Spender, as do sketches from Freud’s life as a merchant seaman on a cargo vessel in the Atlantic in 1941. His then surreal style lent itself to illustrations and his fascination with animals, birds, and fish was revealed in the famous line drawings he produced for Nicholas Moore’s book of poems, The Glass Tower (1944). This volume charts Freud’s work on paper, including the etchings, over his entire career. It includes the formative early work, the sketches in preparation for painting his masterpiece, Large Interior W11 (after Watteau) (1983), the sketches of the completed painting in the studio and the astonishing later studies of his mother. The book ends with the etchings of recent years. The works on paper are an extraordinary achievement, providing even deeper insights into the work of perhaps the greatest figurative artist of our time. Pluto Aged Twelve, 2000 Richard Calvocoressi was for many years Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and is now Director of the Henry Moore Foundation. Oscar Niemeyer Buildings PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALAN WEINTRAUB TEXT BY ALAN HESS This lavishly illustrated volume documents the institutional and civic buildings of a modern master. At age 100, Oscar Niemeyer is universally acknowledged as a master of form, color, and light—the last living Modern master. Niemeyer is known primarily for his large-scale institutional and civic designs throughout Brazil and Europe—daringly conceptual works that challenged twentieth-century orthodoxy about Modernism, materials, and structure. This comprehensive book, a companion to Rizzoli’s Oscar Niemeyer Houses, presents a reevaluation of his greatest buildings, in all new color photography specially commissioned for this book. Featured are the architect’s most seminal work, including: Ministry of Education and Health, Rio de Janeiro; Brasilia; New Pampulha Yacht Club, Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Mondadori Headquarters, Milan; Le Havre Central Cultural Center, France; Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art, Brazil; and the Oscar Niemeyer Museum. A periodic resident of Rio de Janeiro, photographer Alan Weintraub has been granted unprecedented access to these remarkable structures—from Brazil to North Africa to Italy. As a result, Oscar Niemeyer Buildings reveals the master’s brilliant artistry, and his eloquent, sinuous, utterly livable Modernism. Alan Weintraub is a widely published architectural photographer whose recent books include Frank Lloyd Wright: Mid-Century Modern, Oscar Niemeyer Houses, and Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses. In his exuberant manufacture of objects and scenarios, Sachs asks barbed questions of modern creativity that relate to conception, production, consumption, and circulation. Casa No Name is internationally acclaimed photographer Deborah Turbeville’s soulful evocation of her hauntingly beautiful house in Mexico. In the tradition of Kahlo and Allende, Turbeville’s brilliantly stylish portrait of her Mexican house evokes both her vivid imagination and the mystique of Mexico. High-ceilinged rooms surround a central courtyard that is lined with faded frescoes of biblical scenes. The glimmer and shafts of diffused light that stream into the courtyards and curtained rooms add to the romantic atmosphere—one feels as though they have entered into a quintessential Turbeville photograph. Turbeville has captured the spiritual nature of Mexican culture by incorporating into candlelit interiors such traditional religious artifacts as colorful painted tin retablos, hand-carved saints, wooden tableau boxes, and a central wooden figure of the local Virgin Saint Maria Candelaria: aged objets that are handmade, tell stories, and are arranged in artful vignettes. Casa No Name speaks of magic realism and beckons the reader into the private world of this visionary artist. Turbeville’s diaristic presentation of her home in the central highlands of Mexico is a welcome addition to her rich oeuvre and an inspiration for anyone interested in the soul and style of Mexico. Deborah Turbeville ’s work first appeared in Vogue in the 1970s. Since then, she has been a dominant figure in contemporary photography. Her work continues to be exhibited around the world and is published regularly in many international magazines. Called “the best literary gift to travelers since the Baedeker and Henry James” (Financial Times), City Secrets guides are charming travelers’ companions to the world’s most fascinating cities. In New York, London, Rome, Florence, and Venice, City Secrets offers reflections and discoveries from the authors, artists, and historians who know each city best. Excerpt: Dodsworth 1936, William Wyler I’ve always felt that Dodsworth was one of the finest American movies. William Wyler’s simplicity, Sidney Howard’s language, and, above all, Walter Huston’s and Mary Astor’s performances result in one of the most mature and powerful movies in my memory. The glory and debasement that love can bring into one’s life have never been explored so tellingly. In fact, because of our sentimentality about love, rarely do we consider its destructive power. Dodsworth plunges into this world unhesitatingly with art and power and subtlety. In my view, a great film. Sidney Lumet Director Living On Velvet 1935, Frank Borzage In most films of the period, that idea is a cliché, a device, or a pretext for character exploration (as in a Hawks picture). But in a Borzage movie, love really does conquer all, and it really does make the world go round. When Borzage shows two people in love—Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor in Seventh Heaven, Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes in A Farewell to Arms, Spencer Tracy and Joan Crawford in Mannequin, Dane Clark and Gail Russell in Moonrise—you feel as if you’ve entered a sacred realm. He lets the action playout in lovers’ time, and every little physical and emotional detail feels precious. Borzage’s cinema reminds me of Renaissance painting: everything feels rounded, perfectly aligned—sanctified. Martin Scorsese Director Movies takes this intimate, insider’s approach to the arts, featuring brief essays and recommendations by esteemed figures in the film industry—including actors, directors, producers, and critics—and other writers and figures in the arts. Some have written on a film, or an aspect of a film (a performance, style, or theme) that they feel is overlooked or underappreciated. Others have chosen a wellknown film for which they can offer personal insights or behind-the-scenes observations. Contributors include Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, Ken Auletta, Milos Forman, Anjelica Huston, Barbara Kopple, Sidney Lumet, Simon Schama, and many others. A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to The Film Foundation, an organization founded by Martin Scorsese that raises funds for film restoration and conversation, and promotes awareness about motion picture history. Robert Kahn is an architect in private practice. His work includes academic, institutional, residential, and commercial projects, and has been featured in many leading publications in the field. He is also the creator and editor of the City Secrets series. America’s Next Top Model: Fierce Guide to Life THE ULTIMATE SOURCE OF BEAUTY, FASHION, AND MODEL BEHAVIOR WRITTEN BY J.E. DAVID HAWCOCK AND ERIC KENTLEY Pop-Up Book of Ships is a dramatic pop-up journey into the world’s maritime past, presenting various maritime cultural innovations. From the early explorers such as the Santa Maria to the famous Mayflower; from marauding pirate ships to frigates like the Bonhomme Richard and the U.S.S. Constitution; from a quaint Mississippi riverboat to the luxurious S.S. Normandie ocean liner and a superbly crafted America’s Cup yacht; from impressive aircraft carriers such as the Intrepid or Enterprise to the most advanced nuclear submarine. Readers will learn about the H.M.S. Victory, labeled a “first-rate ship,” a designation that was used as early as the eighteenth century by the British Royal Navy for its largest ships mounting 100 guns or more; or that unlike a traditional square-rigged ship, the sails of a Chinese junk can be moved toward the long axis of the ship, allowing a junk to sail into the wind, to name only two. Pop-Up Book of Ships presents a dynamic history of some of the world’s greatest maritime adventures. Colorful, informative, and fun, Pop-Up Book of Ships adeptly showcases maritime adventure and lure of the sea, and is a fascinating book for sailors and seamen of all ages. The House Dress A STORY OF EROTICISM AND FASHION ELDA DANESE After fashion designers like Emilio Pucci and Roberta di Camerino gave their own interpretation of the house dress, the garment has become the distinguishing personal style of Diane von Furstenberg, finding a major place in her work. The idea of the house dress is closely related to the concept of housework and domesticity. At the same time, it is distinguished by not being a uniform, thanks in particular to the decorations of the fabric. Starting in the late 1940s, a whole series of movies contributed to its image through a gallery of remarkable female characters, the latest of which is Pedro Almodovar’s film Volver, with a female lead who is equipped with a wardrobe full of beautifully ornamented house dresses. SCHELLER From Carnegie and Rockefeller to Turner and Gates, this volume celebrates the history of forty of America’s true barons of business and opens the door onto their private palaces. Skillfully written and richly illustrated, Barons of Business looks into the lives and fortunes of the ambitious individuals like Calvin Coolidge, who believed that “the business of America is business.” Beginning with the colonial era, when trade was overtaking landholding as a way to get rich, Barons of Business follows the restless careers of our most brilliant and driven merchants, industrialists, and financiers as they master a new economic world of textiles, railroads, oil, and steel. With the twentieth century comes fresh opportunities: automobiles, motion pictures, broadcasting, publishing and retailing on a massive scale, and the vast horizon of high technology. Meet John Hancock, colonial Boston’s “limousine liberal,” and learn how John Jacob Astor parlayed success in the fur trade into status as Manhattan’s master landlord and richest man in America—only to be eclipsed by Cornelius Vanderbilt, who leaped like a nimble Croesus from steamships to railroads. Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Ford are here, as well as J.P. Morgan, William Randolph Hearst, Howard Hughes, Malcolm Forbes, Warren Buffett, Steven Spielberg, and Bill Gates. Barons of Business brings together more than forty individuals for whom the business of America was indeed business—and who excelled at it beyond anyone’s dreams. Except, perhaps, their own. William G. Scheller is the author or co-author of more than twenty books, including several written in connection with the National Geographic Society. This book chronicles vintage motifs in thematic chapters interspersed with profiles of influential tattoo artists and their distinctive designs: Sailor Jerry Collins, Don Ed Hardy (“the Godfather of Tattoos”), Mike “Rollo Banks” Malone, Bert Grimm, Japan’s Horiyoshi III, and Shanghai’s Pinky Yun. Carol Clerk is a veteran music writer and author who has written for a number of underground newspapers and ‘zines like the weekly Melody Maker. Uncovered RARE VINTAGE MALE NUDES REED MASSENGILL FOREWORD BY VICTOR SKREBNESKI This stunning collection of rarely seen male nudes brings to light a long-hidden chapter in the story of gay erotic photography. In the pre-Stonewall era before the advent of the gay rights movement, male nude photography was kept underground. Photographers feared police confiscation, harassment, and worse. This volume uncovers the work of ten different photographers produced during this suppressive period—images hidden away for a generation in private collections and closed archives. The majority have never been published. New York A PHOTOGRAPHIC ALBUM COMPILED BY GABRIELA KOGAN PHOTOGRAPHS BY MANY LOVERS OF THE CITY Like a love letter to the city, it is the perfect gift or impulse buy for anyone who loves New York— whether a current resident of the five boroughs or an “expat” yearning for home. This keepsake album is the freshest collection of images published in many years savoring the many facets of New York. Some intimate and detailed, others wide-angled, these photographs explore the grand chaotic serendipity that makes New York so vibrant. Tourists and visitors often comment on this remarkable energy—people feel more alive in New York, especially when they are new to it—and this is the perfect keepsake album that captures (and re-captures) that initial dumbstruck awe and rush of adrenaline that everyone has felt here. The photographs also explore the contrasts that define New York—the highs and the lows, the grand and the ordinary. From penthouses to piers and from bucolic Central Park to carnivalesque Coney Island, the book explores New York’s amazing contradictions that somehow come together in a unique masterpiece. From the heights of the Empire State to the nether realms of the subway, from the burlesque zaniness of Gay Pride to the busting Chinatown streets beneath the bridge, from luxury boutiques to colorful bodegas, and from Lincoln Center to the street corner chanteuse—the contrasts of the city are captured in this album to form a coherent picture of the genius and excitement that is the city. Through words and stunning images, the Emerald Isle is brought to life in Spectacular Ireland, a magnificent collection of 140 color photographs by some of Ireland’s best landscape photographers and elegant text by Peter Harbison, one of Ireland’s most distinguished voices and renowned archaeologists. This handsome volume celebrates Ireland, a small island country of extraordinary beauty, fascinating history, and evocative myths, where old and new thrive together. From ancient standing stones and breathtaking pastoral scenes to energetic cities of architectural sophistication, we take a photographic tour reflecting the soul of this spectacular island. A brief history of Ireland puts the images into historical context: from ancient Celtic dolmens to abbeys and castles, from lush pastures, fields of heather, and seaside cliffs to formal gardens, and from ancient villages to the rush of contemporary Dublin. But Ireland is much more than beautiful landscape. Much of the magic of the country lies in the people themselves; these are a people who cherish their land. It is a rich heritage—of history, magic, and mystery—that makes Ireland a favorite destination for tourists and armchair travelers alike.
