Fall Program 2010-2011 - Grand Cities Children`s Choir
GRAND CITIES CHILDREN’S CHOIR 2010 - 2011 Thursday, November 18th, 7:00 p.m. United Lutheran Church Grand Forks, North Dakota Horizons The theme for the 9th performance season of the Grand Cities Children’s Choir is “Horizons”. As we see our ten-year anniversary on the horizon, we remember our beginnings as a small choir and our mission to promote musical excellence and artistry for young people within our community. Our mission still holds firm today after expanding to five performing choirs and serving nearly 1,000 singers in our short history. We thank you for being a part of our organization and for joining us on this journey. For the 5th year, we have the privilege of featuring the artwork of one of our choir alums, Brittany Molmen, in the depiction of our concert theme. We thank Brittany for lending us her time and talents once again. As she explains the inspiration for her art below, she describes the colors of the horizon. We invite you to visit our website (www.gogccc.org) where Brittany’s art can be seen in the brilliant colors she intended. Grayscale just doesn’t do her work justice! With music we can soar to new horizons. The music note is a bridge between our daily lives (the earth in the picture) and our aspiration (the sky). Our song inspires the imagination. The sun at the center of the note lights the canvas of our dreams. We look with anticipation and excitement to what’s yet to be discovered. The glowing colors over the horizon beckon us toward the mystery of tomorrow. The pathway to the future is ever-opening to new possibilities. The note’s flag widens to the horizon. Concert Etiquette Out of respect for our musicians and other audience members, we ask that you would enter and exit your seat only between selections. If possible, wait until the audience is applauding before moving. An exception to this is if you need to remove a restless or crying child. Please turn cell phones off or to vibrate and refrain from texting during the performance. Finally, it is customary to provide vigorous, exuberant applause for our children at the end of each song and as they enter the performance space. They’ve worked hard for this day! Thank you! PROGRAM Poco Voce Connie Stordalen, director Roxanne Gessler, accompanist Rachel Abbe, GG coordinator Snowflake Carol............................................................... Audrey Snyder Ev'ry truly cultured music student knows you must learn your scales and your arpeggios! This charming song from Walt Disney's “The Aristocats” is a delightful 2-part piece including a solfege countermelody and even a little of Beethoven's “Ode to Joy“ theme. Child of Peace................................................................................................................. David Waggoner The word "peace" is sung in six languages as a special touch in this moving concert selection. The inspiring message and lyrical music is guaranteed to warm your heart. Traditional Spiritual arranged by Roger Emerson A classic spiritual with a doo-wop feel. Antonio....................................................................................................................................Jay Broeker Antonio – Jace Toutenhoofd, Miss Lissamy Lu - Alexis Roehl Choreography by Connie Sherwood This song uses the words of the poem “Antonio, Antonio” by Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards (1850-1943). Laura's mother, Julia Ward Howe, wrote the words to “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” In the poem, Antonio is tired of living alonio and decides to woo Miss Lissamy Lucy Molonio. The Nutcracker - In About Three Minutes .......................................................... Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky arr. Mark Weston It is the story of the ballet, set to the music of the ballet, and it only takes three minutes to perform! James Yorkston - arr. D. Shawn Berry Also known as “Molly Malone” and “Cockles and Mussels”, the piece was first published in London in 1884. Credited to a Scottish composer, James Yorkston, the published version was arranged by Edmund Forman. Since it was printed with permission of an Edinburgh firm, it is thought there was an earlier Scottish version. The song became the unofficial anthem of Dublin and is generally regarded as Irish, in spite of the fact it was written by a Scotsman. Je Danse La Polka (Papa Says, "No!") ............... French folksong - arr. Judith Herrington and Sara Glick “My father does not want me to dance the polka. But in spite of his arguments, I dance the polka.” This piece portrays the timeless determination and desire of young people for fun, often against their parents' wishes. The irony of this arrangement is that it would be difficult (perhaps impossible) to dance to this piece due to the changing meters. Cedar Swamp ............................................................................ Appalachian Folksong - arr. Jay Broeker This arrangement is based on a mixolydian version of the folksong. It allows the singers to "fiddle" around with their voices! Accordo Voce Singers Anna Amundson Michael Anderson Jacob Austin Adele Benoit Spencer Brindley Kaylynn Campoverde Alex Corsar Lauren Craig Emily Denman Francine Dong Emily Dosch Ella Dostal Sarah Ellsworth Danika Flanders Casey Hennessy Carson Herbert Alexandra Hoff Nick Hovey Maia Jackson McKenzie Johnson Sarah Kay Natalie King Isabel Krogh Elaine Larson Whitney Longie Brianna Myrold Grace Netz Kaitlyn O'Shea Katherine Pauls Nathan Peasland Rebecca Rage Brinna Richtsmeier Katelyn Rudolph Lydia Severson Anna Shallman Emily Shimpa With GGs - Niall Davis, Joe Frech, Kaitlin Mankie Hannah Noyes, Ryan Schuster, and Jacy Thibert Carol Tak Hanna Tinkler Kloe Wavra Julia Werth Peter Wysocki Primo Voce – Women’s Ensemble Becky Mercer, director Mary Ann Devig, accompanist Megan Ault, GG coordinator Montana Cowgirl ............................................................................................................. Susan Brumfield Jeremiah Johnson, fiddle We have all longed for something that has driven us back to where we’ve come from, whether it be family, familiar surroundings, or good memories. “Montana Cowgirl” conjures this feeling of longing for home. Popular folksong composer Susan Brumfield has arranged the original text and music, written by Ray Park. Dirait-on .........................................................................................................................Morten Lauridsen “Within you, a self-fulfilling Narcissus basks in its own reflection, so it seems.” Morten Lauridsen’s setting of “Dirait-on” concludes Les chansons des roses, a song cycle based on lyrics of the French-German imagist poet Rainer Maria Rilke. Conceived as a folk-like chanson populaire, “Dirait-on” interweaves two infectiously hummable melodies introduced in the preceding songs of the cycle. Stand Together ..................................................................................................................... Jim Papoulis Percussion, Kecia Peters This song was composed at the Choral Music Experience in 2005 reflecting striving together towards a goal; encouragement for the individual and the group; exploration of unique inner strengths that make the whole more viable, more vibrant. The unique syllables are taken from the hummings of the famous Celtic singer, Noirin ni Rianin. The overall message of this song is there is an inner strength that lies in all of us. Sherri Porterfield Soloists - Jack Jeno and Jared Hollingworth This Canadian Folk Song originated from the outports of Newfoundland. These outports were very small, isolated villages where most of the people earned their living by fishing. In the evenings, the residents would gather to sing and dance. "I'se The B'y," translated into English as "I is the Boy," is a perfect accompaniment for a square dance. Nine Hundred Miles .....................................................................................................arr. Philip E. Silvey Soloists - Nick Ewens and Camron Roehl Philip E. Silvey's arrangement of this American Folk Song paints a vivid picture of loneliness when we are far from home. The singers use a variety of dynamic contrasts to represent the longing of the heart. The piano accompaniment represents the motion of the train, with its haunting whistle blowing through the night. Swingin' With The Saints ................................................................................................. arr. Mark Hayes "Swing Low" and "Saints Go Marching In" are two of our most beloved spirituals. In order to appropriately represent the jazz style in which this arrangement is written, singers must learn to hear and tune jazz harmonies and perform a variety of difficult syncopated patterns. These young men have enjoyed taking on that challenge. In March 2007, when she was 10 years old, Ali was diagnosed with High-Risk Precursor B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Ali endured intense chemotherapy and radiation treatments for the next two years and was thought to be in remission. In September 2010, after being off treatment for only 10 months, Ali’s leukemia returned. She and her family are currently in Rochester, MN, where she is undergoing treatment. GCCC would like to invite you to rally with us in support of Ali and her family and send some love their way. So, what’s with all the smiley faces? Ali’s motto is “Smile wide every day!” And, she calls the good cells in her blood her “smiley faces”. So let’s send her some smiles! Please take a minute to sign your name to the smiley faces inside your program. You may also write a brief note of support to Ali and her family on your smiley face if you choose. We will be collecting the smiley’s and financial contributions for Ali’s family at the end of the concert and as you exit. You can also make contributions for Ali online through Paypal on the Support page on our website, www.gogccc.org. The mailing address for Ali’s family is: Ronald McDonald House; Ali Borgen Family, Rm 311; 850 2nd St. SW; Rochester, MN 55902.
